Eric Thompson hosts Julianne Rawlins, a Sotheby's agent from Southern Oregon, who recounts her discovery of Ninja Selling after a poor initial real estate experience, calling it a perfect fit. Hear about her "Ninja 9 Challenge" from Nov '24, where, seeking a strong start to the year, she gamified a 3-week push for herself and colleagues, focusing intensely on Ninja 9 tasks. The result? An incredible 700% business increase in Q1 2025!  Julianne discusses pushing past comfort zones (like hitting 50+ weekly calls), shifting her mindset from obligation to the joy of service, and her powerful mantra, "If you're invited, go." She highlights the impact of handwritten notes, insights from the Ninja Now course (like the "corporate athlete" idea), and how coaching provides crucial accountability and consistency. Tune in today to learn how Julianne's commitment and Ninja principles led to extraordinary results, and how it can do the same for you! Episode Highlights: Julianne's Introduction & Market Area Julianne's Ninja Story: Finding the Right Fit Q1 2025 Success: A 700% Increase The Ninja 9 Challenge: Genesis and Structure Pushing from 35 to 50 Forward Conversations Using the Tracker & Overcoming Call Reluctance "If You're Invited, Go" Monumental Mindset Shift What Kept Her Going: Competition and Commitment The Power of Handwritten Notes Success as a Tapestry: It's All the Things Working Together Ninja Sailing Cruise & Ninja Now Experience Insights The Value of Ninja Coaching with Mark Johnson Final Message: Slow and Steady Wins the Race Key Takeaways: "Okay, if I can do real estate this way, then I can definitely do real estate." "I am not going to have that happen in 2025. So what can I do to set up my first quarter to be more successful?" "I know I can get 50 forward conversations in... because I've done it, so why can't I do it every week?" "I just ignored that voice in my head and did it anyways. And no one was mad that I called them." "I heard a great phrase that said, if you're invited, go. And that has been very powerful and has kind of been my new mantra..." "I need to be doing these activities out of that, with that mindset that I am helping them and that I love helping them and not 'I have to do this'." "It's hard to really pinpoint that because it's such a tapestry of everything all working together." "...he called us corporate athletes. And I've been pondering that a lot and about what that means to be an athlete and how we need to train and perform..." "My story is pretty much just slow and steady wins... the race, that's just really my mantra." "I love that Ninja has taught me to dream... it's given me the life of my dreams, honestly." For so many of us, crochet (or any craft) is as gift which offers mental release, a chance to focus on something away from the day-to-day worries of life and that creative spark so many of us need. When Marianne Rawlins was working part-time whilst raising her very small children, crochet arrived in her life. It gave her a creative outlet and ultimately an additional career, as her hobby developed into writing and designing for Simply Crochet magazine. Our paths crossed through her work for Simply Crochet and I asked her to come onto the podcast to talk about how her hobby had opened up new doors for her. Whilst crochet is not Marianne's 'day job' it does play a very important role in her life and she takes great pleasure in not only designing and making crochet items herself but writing articles for the magazine about other makers and testing new yarns which have come onto the market for practical features. You can find Marianne on Instagram as @mazcrochets and on Ravelry too, where she sells her crochet patterns. For the full show notes for this episode, please visit the Making Stitches Podcast website. To join the mailing list for the Making Stitches Newsletter, please click onto this link. The theme music is Make You Smile by RGMusic from Melody Loops .The Making Stitches logo was designed by Neil Warburton at iamunknown. You can support Making Stitches Podcast with running costs through Ko-fi.Making Stitches  Podcast is supported by the Making Stitches Shop which offers Making Stitches Podcast merchandise for sale as well as Up the Garden Path crochet patterns created by me & illustrated by Emma Jackson.Making Stitches Podcast is presented, recorded and edited by Lindsay Weston.

Episode 2234: Walter Mosley on Easy Rawlins, King Oliver and the history of fictional black American detectives

The acclaimed American writer Walter Mosley has a new King Oliver book out: Been Wrong So Long It Feels Like Right, a novel that follows Oliver's search for both a missing woman and his estranged father who was released from prison nine years ago. But before getting to his latest mystery, I couldn't resist asking Mosley to compare his most famous fictional character, Easy Rawlins, with King Oliver. Mosley explains how Oliver, a contemporary detective in New York, faces different, perhaps less racialized challenges than Rawlins did in 1940s Los Angeles. We then moved onto to Mosley's observations about crime and punishment in white and black America as well as the importance of jazz music in his writing. Here are the five KEEN ON takeaways from this conversation with Walter Mosley:* The difference between his two detective characters reflects changing times in America: Easy Rawlins operates in a strictly black-and-white 1940s Los Angeles where his race defines everything, while Joe King Oliver works in contemporary New York where racial boundaries are more fluid, even if racism still exists.* Mosley's writing process is remarkably disciplined and productive (or so he says) - he writes three hours every day without fail, enabling him to complete two to three books annually while also working on television and film projects.* The character Joe King Oliver was named after the famous jazz musician - this reflects both the musical qualities Mosley sees in writing and the character's connection to his fictional missing father, who named him after the jazz great who mentored Louis Armstrong.* Been Wrong So Long It Feels Like Right interweaves two plots: a case involving a runaway wife and a personal quest to find Oliver's estranged father who was secretly released from prison nine years ago, exploring themes of family reconciliation.* Growing up as an only child with a Jewish mother and African-American father influenced Mosley's perspective on American identity - though he sees such multicultural backgrounds as common to many Americans' experiences rather than unique to his situation.Walter Mosley is one of America's most celebrated and beloved writers. His books have won numerous awards and have been translated into more than twenty languages. Mosley is the author of the acclaimed Easy Rawlins series of mysteries, including national bestsellers Cinnamon Kiss, Little Scarlet, and Bad Boy Brawly Brown; the Fearless Jones series, including Fearless Jones, Fear Itself, and Fear of the Dark; the novels Blue Light and RL's Dream; and two collections of stories featuring Socrates Fortlow, Always Outnumbered, Always Outgunned, for which he received the Anisfield-Wolf Award, and Walkin' the Dog. He lives in New York City.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting the daily KEEN ON show, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy interview series. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. Andrew lives in San Francisco, is married to Cassandra Knight, Google's VP of Litigation & Discovery, and has two grown children.Keen On is a reader-supported publication.  Allen Ottens on  "The Grant-Rawlins Relationship"  For More Info: WWW.ChicagoCWRT.ORG  Galena lawyer and Ulysses S. Grant neighbor John a. Rawlins rose to assistant adjutant general on Grant's staff and ultimately Grant's secretary of war. From the earliest days of the Civil War to Grant's years in the White House, John A. Rawlins was ever at Grant's side. Yet Rawlins's role in Grant's career is often overlooked, and he barely received mention in Grant's own two-volume Memoirs.  Rawlins teamed with Grant, the two complementing each other in their abilities and ambitions. Rawlins submerged his own needs and ambition in the service of Grant. He played a pivotal role in Grant's relatively small staff, acting as administrator, counselor, and defender of Grant's burgeoning popularity.  Allen J. Ottens is a Professor Emeritus of Counselor Education and Supervision at Northern Illinois University. He worked as a psychologist at several university counseling centers. He is also a past president of the Manuscript Society. With a lifelong interest in the Civil War and Abraham Lincoln, he is the author of the award-winning biography, General John A. Rawlins: No Ordinary Man (2021).

This Halloween, celebrate with the thrilling finale of our Haunted America series as Host Lyle Perez takes listeners on a ghostly tour through Wyoming, known for its rugged beauty, Old West history, and chilling haunted sites. From historic hotels with tragic pasts to abandoned prisons and eerie saloons, Wyoming is alive with spirits and supernatural encounters. Join us for one last ride into the haunted history of the Cowboy State. Featured Locations: The Occidental Hotel, Buffalo 10 N Main St, Buffalo, WY 82834 The Occidental Hotel, a gem of the Old West dating back to 1880, hosted figures like Buffalo Bill and Butch Cassidy. But it's not just famous names that linger here; the ghost of a young girl clutching a doll is often seen on the grand staircase. Guests report hearing cowboy boots echoing down the halls and old-time saloon music drifting through the empty bar. A cowboy's apparition is known to tip his hat to visitors before disappearing. Staying here is like stepping into a time capsule of the Wild West—one where some guests never left. The Historic Plains Hotel, Cheyenne 1600 Central Ave, Cheyenne, WY 82001 The Plains Hotel in Cheyenne, operating since 1911, is haunted by Rosie, a distraught bride whose sorrowful ghost still roams the halls. Guests frequently feel chills, hear sobbing, and see unexplained reflections in mirrors. Room 510 is especially active, with lights flickering and Rosie's ghost spotted at the window, seemingly waiting for someone who never arrived. Fort Laramie National Historic Site, Fort Laramie 965 Gray Rocks Rd, Fort Laramie, WY 82212 Dating back to 1834, Fort Laramie was a key military outpost during the westward expansion. Today, it's haunted by spirits of soldiers, including Lieutenant Levi Robinson, who died tragically near the fort. Visitors report ghostly soldiers marching on the parade grounds, eerie bugle calls, and a chilly atmosphere, especially around the old barracks. Fort Laramie offers a haunting glimpse into the sacrifices of the frontier era. The Cody Theatre, Cody 1171 Sheridan Ave, Cody, WY 82414 The Cody Theatre, built in 1936, is known for ghostly patrons. One spirit, a man in a long coat and hat, watches from the back, while a former usher named “Johnny” is said to roam the aisles. Staff report footsteps, laughter, and Buffalo Bill's apparition occasionally appearing to keep an eye on his town's theater. Wyoming Frontier Prison, Rawlins 500 W Walnut St, Rawlins, WY 82301 The Wyoming Frontier Prison housed dangerous criminals from 1901 to 1981, and its dark energy is palpable. Inmates reportedly still haunt areas like “The Hole,” where they endured extreme isolation. Visitors report hearing voices, seeing shadows, and feeling an oppressive sense of dread throughout the cell blocks. The prison now offers ghost tours, letting guests experience its haunted past firsthand. The Irma Hotel, Cody 1192 Sheridan Ave, Cody, WY 82414 Built by Buffalo Bill in 1902, the Irma Hotel hosts several spirits, including Buffalo Bill himself. Guests often smell cigar smoke and feel sudden chills near the Cherrywood Bar, a gift from Queen Victoria. The ghost of a young woman named Emily has also been spotted in a white gown, wandering the halls. Staying here offers a unique connection to Cody's haunted history. Sweetwater County Library, Green River 300 N 1st E St, Green River, WY 82935 Built over an old cemetery, the Sweetwater County Library is known for paranormal activity. “Charlie,” a ghostly presence, frequently rearranges books, flickers lights, and creates cold spots. Patrons report shadowy figures in the aisles, whispers, and the unsettling sensation of being watched, making this library a top stop for ghost hunters. The Virginian Hotel, Medicine Bow 404 Lincoln Hwy, Medicine Bow, WY 82329 This luxury hotel from 1911 is haunted by Emily, a spirit seen wandering the third floor and heard softly singing. Guests report strange footsteps at night, doors slamming, and glimpses of her reflection in mirrors. The Virginian Hotel offers a haunted yet elegant experience for overnight guests. Old Faithful Inn, Yellowstone National Park 3200 Old Faithful Inn Rd, Yellowstone National Park, WY 82190 The historic Old Faithful Inn is home to the ghost of a bride who ended her life on her wedding night. Guests often hear her weeping and see her figure on the upper floors. Shadows move mysteriously in the hallways, and cold spots are common in areas associated with her story. The inn, with its rustic charm, adds an extra thrill to any Yellowstone visit. The Virginian Saloon, Jackson 750 W Broadway, Jackson, WY 83001 The Virginian Saloon is famous for The Cowboy, a ghostly figure seen near the bar, believed to be a drifter from the town's early days. Patrons and staff report flickering lights, footsteps, and mysteriously sliding glasses. This saloon's vintage decor and dim lighting set the perfect stage for ghostly encounters. In this episode, I spoke with Justin Owen Rawlins about his book "imagining The Method".  Only one performance style has dominated the lexicon of the casual moviegoer: “Method acting.” The first reception-based analysis of film acting, Imagining the Method investigates how popular understandings of the so-called Method—what its author Justin Rawlins calls "methodness"—created an exclusive brand for white, male actors while associating such actors with rebellion and marginalization. Drawing on extensive archival research, the book maps the forces giving shape to methodness and policing its boundaries.

We've all experienced the feelings of happiness, sadness, fear, anger, etc. And if you are a mom, you've seen your children experience all of these emotions too.  But why is it that when our children are displaying anger, it makes us so uncomfortable? Today we are talking with Certified Parenting Coach, Leda Rawlins, about why anger in children is normal and what we, as parents, can do when our child is angry. Leda will walk us through how, and when, to teach our children how to react in a frustrating moment. We know that angry behaviors from our kids at home is stressful enough, so it's normal to worry about those same behaviors while they are at school or extracurricular activities. Leda will explain when and who we should collaborate with to make the best team to support our child in those settings. Sometimes as parents it can seem daunting to change our own behavior when responding to anger from our child. Leda acknowledges that the help of professionals can be beneficial and sometimes necessary to teach us the tools and strategies we need to help our child succeed. The main thing we want you to know is that it doesn't take a perfect parent to implement the strategies Leda teaches us today. It's about being better, and that's what's important! Happy Spooky Wednesday, everyone! We have a special guest, Chad Brown (AKA C-Silence), with us this week! You can catch him this Homegrown both solo, and with his group, Boog3ym3n! First up, Kala tells us all about the Wyoming Frontier Prison in Rawlins, Wyoming. This building opened in the early 1900s, and like all prisons from that time, it has a terrible history of mistreating prisoners and horrible conditions. Add in a bit of the "wild west frontier" vibe, and you've got the perfect recipe for a haunting. And Brittany, as she hinted at last week, tells us about The Dakota in New York City, New York. This Upper West Side Manhattan apartment building is home to many rich and famous people, and has been throughout its history. But an outrageous rent is not keeping the ghosties away. They're out here not living their best after-life, making sure all the celebrities in the building know that they're still around.  It is the last week to enter for a chance to win a week-long Homegrown Music Festival pass! (That's a $40 value, y'all!) Listen for the code word this episode, and be sure you've gotten the code words out of the last three episodes! DM us on Facebook or Instagram with the words and you'll be entered! We'll draw on Friday, April 26th, and contact the two winners on whatever platform they messaged us with! Thank you so much for participating this month, and thank you to all the special guests who came by and had fun with us!

Only one performance style has dominated the lexicon of the casual moviegoer: “Method acting.” The first reception-based analysis of film acting, Imagining the Method: Reception, Identity, and American Screen Performance (U Texas Press, 2024) investigates how popular understandings of the so-called Method—what its author Justin Rawlins calls "methodness"—created an exclusive brand for white, male actors while associating such actors with rebellion and marginalization. Drawing on extensive archival research, the book maps the forces giving shape to methodness and policing its boundaries. Imagining the Method traces the primordial conditions under which the Method was conceived. It explores John Garfield's tenuous relationship with methodness due to his identity. It considers the links between John Wayne's reliance on "anti-Method" stardom and Marlon Brando and James Dean's ascribed embodiment of Method features. It dissects contemporary emphases on transformation and considers the implications of methodness in the encoding of AI performers. Altogether, Justin Rawlins offers a revisionist history of the Method that shines a light on the cultural politics of methodness and the still-dominant assumptions about race, gender, and screen actors and acting that inform how we talk about performance and performers.
