Hello and welcome to Angel season 5 episode 20! Remember to send in those season (maybe series?!) wrap-up questions to popculturerolecall@gmail.com. With the end of the season quickly approaching, the crew is probably knuckling down and starting to wargame the final confrontation with Wolfram & Hart. What's that? It's a filler episode about Spike and Angel stalking Buffy around Rome? Lots of jokes and comedic editing?Huh...that's a choice. Thanks for listening!
Welcome to Angel season 5 episode 10! After a heated argument between Gunn and Wes causes Angel to lose his cool, the big boss decides to take a much needed mental health day. Meanwhile, Spike begins to embrace some version of the "champion" myth on the down low. One champion on paid leave, the other champion doing charity work. All while the greater machinations of Wolfram & Hart tug on unseen strings. Thanks for listening!
Welcome to the season 4 finale! After ending world peace (I swear it's not how it sounds), the crew is treated to a little surprise for their efforts. They get executive level jobs at Wolfram & Hart! (Ok, really, I swear it's not how it sounds). What does this nefarious corporation have in store for us though. I guess we will need to wait until season 5 for that one...assuming season 5 exists. Thanks for listening!
When you're a vampire with a soul, you learn to live with the idea of people wanting you dead. ... Work long enough and the line to kill you gets pretty long." That's right, Scoobies—Angel the vampire DOES have a lot in common with burned spy Michael Westen. (Not to be confused with actor Michael Weston, real-life son of our dearly departed Linwood Murrow.) But this episode is not so much about the titular vampire; it's about Lorne! (Cue "Viva Lorne Vegas.") Since starting work at Wolfram & Hart, Lorne's been under a lot of stress, folks. Yes, most of that stress was left on the cutting room floor, but now, there's a whole episode about it. So crack open a can of blue blood boy and join your hosts LaToya Ferguson and Morgan Lutich (AKA Captain Forehead and AK William Bloody, AKA the Gunn Squad, and so much more) this week as they discuss the Angel Season 5 episode "Life of the Party," an episode in which Angel finally remembers to be a good friend (and how to do his hair), everyone is reminded what a bop Thelma Houston's "Don't Leave Me This Way Is," and office party hijinks ensue. (Apologies for not mentioning David Krumholtz as Lorne's assistant in the episode. Talk about blink-and-you-miss-it, Scoobies.)LOCATE YOUR HOSTS ON THE INTERNETLaToya Ferguson: @lafergs Read An Encyclopedia of Women's WrestlingMorgan Lutich: @lorganmutichListen to LaToya, Morgan, and their pal Jill discuss The Vampire Diaries on The AMPire Diaries podcast!ANGEL ON TOPAngel On Top: @angelontopcast on twitter and instagramSupport Angel On Top on Patreon: angelontop.comLearn more about us and our team at bufferingthevampireslayer.com+++Producers: LaToya Ferguson, Morgan Lutich, and Kristin RussoEditor: Kristin RussoMusic + Jingles: Jenny Owen YoungsLogo: Kristine Thune
Welcome to season 2 episode 12! Gunn, Wes, and Cordi take a bold step forward as friends and business associates. Time to rip up those old Angel Investigations business cards, lease a new office, and start saving LA from the powers of evil. No broody vampire necessary. Meanwhile, a broody vampire is slowly chipping away at the credibility of Wolfram & Hart one charity mugging at a time. Is he doing something "good-good" or just "good-ish"? We'll talk about it. Thanks for listening!
Conversations with Dead People is back, and with hardly any time at all between episodes! Seriously, for all you could tell I recorded this episode the same night as our last one. Seamless! Hollywood hotshot Michael Holland is here and we share a few words about the Apple TV+ series The Afterparty, which debuted recently and for which Michael served as Post-Production Supervisor, before continuing our journey through Angel Season 2. “Untouched” introduces us to writer Mere Smith, who will go on to pen some of the finest episodes of the series, and here considers sexual agency and trauma from the angle of two different Wolfram & Hart “special projects.” Then, in “Dear Boy,” the Boreanaz and Benz chemistry boils through the subterranean convent roof. And lastly, “Guise Will Be Guise” as Angel goes to therapy and Wesley bluffs his way into Virginia. NEXT: our very own voice of the Watcher Council, the exceedingly British Wesley “Wezzo” Mead joins me to talk about episodes 207, “Darla,” 208, “The Shroud of Rahmon,” and 209, “The Trial.” BREAKDOWN 00:00:55 - Intro / Guest 00:21:41 - Main Topic 01:33:22 - Outro / Next MUSIC “Conversations (feat. We came into this episode not knowing what to expect, but were blown away! This week we go deeper than ever before into the inner workings of Wolfram & Hart, get to know Lindsay better, and get to watch Lee Mercer get his dumbass head blown off. Now, we're not sure if you've heard, but there is always a price to using dark magics. That's a lesson our foes over on Buffering the Vampire Slayer learned earlier this season (with "After Life"), and it's a lesson we're all learning this week on Angel on Top (with "The Price"). So prepare to have an answer to the inevitable "Who Wore It Better?"-esque question when it comes to talk of all things thaumogenesis, Scoobies. And join your hosts LaToya Ferguson and Morgan Lutich (AKA the Cordelia and Fred of the Bufferingverse, AKA the Gunn Squad, and so much more) as they navigate all things translucent demon slugs, Wolfram & Hart non sequiturs, and Wesley's upsetting attractiveness level.LOCATE YOUR HOSTS ON THE INTERNET LaToya Ferguson: @lafergs Read An Encyclopedia of Women's Wrestling Morgan Lutich: @lorganmutich Listen to LaToya, Morgan, and their pal Jill discuss The Vampire Diaries on The AMPire Diaries podcast! It may be February, but allow us to transport you back to November 2001 for some network sweeps shenanigans in the form of a vampire pregnancy. Darla is about to give birth to a baby that may or may not "skitter" out of her, Holtz is armed with knowledge of the moon landing (but very little about Angel's current deal), and the creeps employed by Wolfram & Hart have never been creepier. Join your hosts LaToya Ferguson and Morgan Lutich (AKA the Cordelia and Fred of the Bufferingverse, AKA Bones and Also Bones, AKA the Gunn Squad, AKA Theodore K. “I miss Pylea.” -Cordelia In Heart Throb, Angel takes on a vampire named James, and confronts the nature of loving someone who is dead. In That Vision Thing, Wolfram & Hart blackmails Angel with an assault on Cordelia’s psyche. The only way to save her is to rescue a mysterious man from a hell dimension. In That Old Gang of Mine, this is the episode where we ask ourselves are there any good monsters and we learn why Gunn is never allowed back to Caritas, when his old crew takes on the demons. In Carpe Noctem, Angel body swaps with a horny old man at a retirement home. In Fredless, Winnifred’s family shows up at the hotel, and we say goodby to Winnifred...or do we? Bug monsters assault Angel’s hotel and Winnifred shows up to fight them just in time. In Billy, there’s this guy named Billy and if he touches you – you commit misogynistic violence. And finally, in Offspring, Angel struggles with his relationship with the very pregnant Darla and learns that not only is he a dad, but that there’s something about that baby.
Lindsay’s back! Connor is back! This week, we talk through some tying up of loose ends and/or revisiting dropped plot lines, depending on how charitable you want to be. Lindsay gets rescued from a suburban hell dimension, Connor’s parents show up looking for help for their super-powered son, and Wesley learns the truth about Angel’s deal with Wolfram & Hart.
It’s a day in the life of Harmony Kendall, young vampire just trying to make it on her own! This episode is delightful and we can’t get enough of the comedy, pain, and resourcefulness Angel’s assistant brings to Wolfram & Hart. We also watch “Soul Purpose” and have less to say about that.
Surprise, Reprise! Angel's obsession with Wolfram & Hart leads him to the troubling discovery that hell is a place on earth. And Darla finally gets something she thinks she wants... This week, Angel encounters a werewolf supper club and the team asks why Wolfram & Hart doesn't have more hauntings. Spike confronts an enemy and tries to avoid slipping into hell.
Angel is running the L.A. branch of Wolfram & Hart and discovering the perks and challenges of his new position, as are Fred, Wesley, Lorne and Gunn. Harmony returns as Angel’s new assistant, we meet the mysterious Eve, and Blondie Bear is back!
We made it to the end of Buffy! Cue some tears (but no bubbly, Allie is in Boston before noon). We start with the Angel finale, and the Wolfram & Hart deal has us very excited for next season, bye bye Jasmine! Then, we dive into the Buffy finale, where we appreciate the emotions while quibbling with some of the plot. Then, we go over our rankings for the show as a whole and how a non-binge viewing has changed our minds.
This episode in Los Angeles, it's Angel Investigations versus THE PATRIARCHY when Angel tries to shield a powerful young woman with a traumatizing past from the greedy clutches of Wolfram & Hart. Wolfram & Hart just saved a whole bunch of money on employee health benefits.RIP Gavin and your super amazing cheekbones.
In the Season 1 Finale, Wolfram & Hart and a Phantom of the Opera demon are ready to ruin Angel's life by taking out Cordelia and Wesley. Spike gets us talking about that time Allie spoiled Dawson’s Creek for Ginny, and then we chart the natural, nuanced exit for Riley that could have been. Speaking of Riley’s exit, Spike begins to suspect his hatred for Buffy might be turning into…something else. On Angel, the team must deal with a telekinetic runaway from Wolfram & Hart, which we don’t have a ton to say about but we like where this season is going. Finally, please enjoy our recommendation for a 90’s Robert Downey Jr. Rom Com marathon!
We talk weird dreams and repeat dreams this week, as the Scoobies find themselves stalked by the first slayer in their sleep. It’s the odd duck of Buffy finales, but also the dividing line between two very different shows with a clear direction for the fears and questions to be faced by the gang as they move into adulthood. Later, Angel’s finale is less successful as a finale, but works well to shut the door on the film noir journey and embrace the antagonists of Wolfram & Hart, and Angel’s journey with the Shanshu prophecy. Also, hey Darla! You look good for a pile of dust!
We talk dated Matrix references this week in both “Primeval” and “Blind Date”, and whether there are any good reasons to keep Spike around, and we strongly disagree on the success of Buffy’s showdown with Adam. But, for “Primeval”, we do agree this pseudo finale was as good as it could be with a glorified demon of the week promoted to Big Bad. Ultimately, can a finale type episode work when the main emotional stakes don’t belong to our heroine? Maybe this is Riley’s story and Buffy is just wandering in. On Angel, it’s a Wolfram & Hart episode and we all know those are the best episodes.
Faith surfaces again this week, this time to wreak her violent game on Angel and team, with a little financial incentive from the legal team of Wolfram & Hart. Speaking of, welcome Lindsey and Lila to the actual story! Elsewhere, Buffy and Riley have a lot of sex, the end.
In the penultimate episode of Season 1 Angel we're chatting about Wolfram & Hart's blind assassin going after a diverse group of babies. Angel broods about the failures of a justice system that he constantly ignores, we get a little more Gunn, and we learn there's a prophecy on the move. Hey there listeners, sorry I'm late with this one.In Sunnydale, we have the orgasm house, and Mrs. Landingham is the bay guy. Didn't see that one coming. Bitches & I pontificate on the utility of an orgasm spot on the wall, and what that would do to dating. Also, the right pairing is Anyanka and Spike. As for Angel, Faith shows up, and after some bullshit trying to "contain" her, with Wesley rightfully not trusting her. Wolfram & Hart are trying to tie up their loose end in Faith, but they are thwarted of course- really, W&H is my favorite character in this series. And Faith turns herself in. So it's pretty obvious at this point that Faith is going to go on a journey of self-discovery and ultimately come back as a good guy. Which I'm not a fan of, I much prefer wild card, chaotic neutral Faith.
Spike heads off to Vegas to go up against Wolfram & Hart one last time!
Happiness Isn’t All It’s Cracked Up To Be This week we are talking about Angel… THE SERIES! Angel was a spin-off of Buffy and followed the world’s saddest puppy vampire Angel around Los Angeles as he “fights the good fight”. We also look at the last new trailer for Rogue One, due in theaters December 16th. Rogue One Final Trailer Angel (1999) Synopsis Angel is an American television series, a spin-off from the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The series was created by Buffy’s creator, Joss Whedon, in collaboration with David Greenwalt. It aired on The WB from October 5, 1999, to May 19, 2004, consisting of five seasons and 110 episodes. Like Buffy, it was produced by Whedon’s production company, Mutant Enemy. The show details the ongoing trials of Angel, a vampire whose human soul was restored to him by gypsies as a punishment for the murder of one of their own. After more than a century of murder and the torture of innocents, Angel’s restored soul torments him with guilt and remorse. During the first four seasons of the show, he works as a private detective in Los Angeles, California, where...
