Children live with a beginner's mind. Every day is full of new discoveries, powerful emotions, and often unrealistically positive assumptions about the future. As adults, beginner's mind gives way to the mundane drudgeries of existence — and our brains seem to make it much harder for us to be happy. Should we be cool with that? We wrap up our three-part series on optimism with Paul Bloom, author of Psych: The Story of the Human Mind and Sweet Spot: The Pleasures of Suffering and the Search for Meaning. It can feel really hard when your kid is unhappy or uncomfortable. It's easy to blame yourself and feel like you should have done something differently. But your kid's happiness isn't your job. In this episode, I'll explain what I mean by that and how you can help your child process their emotions without trying to solve all their problems for them. You'll Learn:How much responsibility you have for your kid's happinessWhy making your kid's happiness your job might actually be creating other problemsHow to support your child through negative emotion in a way that empowers them to soothe and regulate themselfWe all want our kids to be happy. But what I want even more is for your child to be able to move through any emotion. I want them to be able to be flexible and to have resilience in the face of hardship. To develop those skills and traits, they need to experience discomfort.--------------------------------Motherhood is confusing. There are so many different stages and phases. Babies are so vulnerable. They rely on you for everything. But as kids get older, we have to figure out how to back away, give them more responsibility & freedom, let them grow, change & make mistakes so that they build the skills and resiliency that they need in order to launch into adulthood. One of the biggest skills you can teach your kid is emotional literacy - understanding what they're feeling, how to express it and what to do with their emotions. Your Kid's Happiness Isn't Your JobWe all want our kids to be happy. But what I want even more is for your child to be able to move through any emotion. I want them to be able to be flexible and to have resilience in the face of hardship. To develop those skills and traits, they need to experience discomfort.Often, when your kid is upset or uncomfortable, you go into problem solving mode. You try to figure out how to help them feel better and how to prevent that kind of discomfort in the future. It's normal not to want your kid to be unhappy, but there are a couple things that happen when you work so hard to prevent it. First, it might keep you from showing up the way you want to and being the emotional coach for your kid. When you think it's your responsibility to make your kid happy, you might end up thinking negatively about yourself. You might think you're not a good mom, that you should have planned/done/said something differently. You might see your child's struggles as being your fault. Or think that you have to work harder and be better. This is a really hard place for you to be. And I want you to know that you don't have to take on that guilt. Second, you end up paving such an easy path for your child that they don't have the opportunity to work through problems on their own, which is how they develop resilience and emotional literacy. It simply isn't possible to prevent all problems and discomfort. Even the most “perfect” parent (not a real thing anyway) cannot prevent unhappy situations from happening. None of us feels happy all the time. Your kid is going to have hard things happen. It's a part of life. We don't want them outsourcing their happiness to you or anyone else. Instead, we want them to believe that they have the power to make themself happy even when shitty stuff happens.Your job isn't to eliminate discomfort for your kid. It is to teach them how to handle it and move through their emotions in a healthy way. Guide them when they are unhappy. Allow them to see that they can handle their feelings, that they know how to feel unhappy and how to shift to a different emotion. How To Support Your Kid's EmotionsBefore you can coach your kid, you have to shift your own thoughts. If you are thinking, “It's my fault. I have to...

Parents deserve to eat and enjoy their own food in the mornings! Because she know that fueling her mind and body helps her show up as a sturdier leader for her kids. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? Nah. Happiness isn't the goal. Resilience is. Confidence is. Growth is. We can't be happy all of the time, and yet, we're taught from such a young age that happiness is all that matters. So, when we inevitably find ourselves in seasons or situations that leave us feeling something other than happy and joyful, we make it mean that there is something wrong with us. What if, instead of being in constant pursuit of happiness, we focused on being in constant pursuit of presence… no matter what emotion comes up. In todays episode I'll break down what this looks like  in real time practice. And how to shift your thinking so that when you're feeling an emotion that doesn't feel great, its not because you're doing it wrong. You're doing it exactly right. Lean into it. Learn from it. Grow stronger, more confident, more resilient.. and then, when happiness does greet you, bask in it for as long as its there… knowing it too, shall pass. Todays episode is about feeling ALL of life. See you inside

Being happy all the time is an unrealistic and unhealthy goal. We need the full scope of our emotions to appreciate the highlights of life. Tune in to find out why science says we should increase happiness.    Transcript:   Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in 2 minutes a day,  through my signature method of Intentional Margins (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.   I'm your host Katie Jefcoat and today I'm taking a deep breath of relief  because there is no way me or anyone else can be “happy” all the time.  It's completely unrealistic and we need all of our emotions.   We should have a wide range of emotions - that's normal.  If you are happy a lot of the time, I hope this is a massive exhale that there is absolutely no permanent state of bliss.    For me, it's a relief to realize that every single moment with my kids doesn't have to be “happy” (you can't see me, but I'm totally doing air quotes}. Don't get me wrong, I love them.  I want them to have a happy childhood. I want to have happy interactions with them. But sometimes, we're just chill.     The science indicates that instead, we should do what we can to increase the presence of happiness in our lives and when it shows up -- pay a little more attention, give a little gratitude or appreciation for that happiness feeling -  you might even realize, it shows up even more when you notice it.     And also, it's ok when that happiness feeling fades, it will, it has to in order to give space to other emotions in this complex mind we have.    What will you pay attention to today that you maybe wouldn't normally? Life is not always filled with happy moments, but sometimes we desire to reclaim happiness to just make it through all the crap. I'm here to share some tips on how to create happiness during rough & tough times.Show Notes:Life can kind of really suck at times. It can be really rough & you just don't know how to make it through. And everyone around you is just telling you to be happy & push through & just suck it up. And while that advice might help the few select people that are able to ignore all negativity in their life, it's not gonna help the majority of us.Being happy can actually be hard. I talk a lot about leaning into gratitude when we find it difficult to be positive or see the positives in life because so many things are going wrong or just not the way you want it to, but I know that there are even times when that is difficult for me. You can acknowledge that you have many things to be grateful for in life, but you get stuck in the negativity parading through your mind that it takes a little more effort to find that happiness again. And this is not something you should feel shameful for, despite the fact that some people try to make you feel that way, it's perfectly acceptable. Especially if you haven't adopted positive coping mechanisms to handle negative experiences & things that can be overwhelming or even traumatic. If you struggle with knowing how to shift your mindset when you get caught up in negativity, then of course it's going to be hard for you to be happy when it feels like the world is burning down around you. There are several common reasons that we can struggle with happiness in life & I want to share those with you just so you're aware of what might be holding you back & preventing you from tapping into the joy:Your happiness is dependent on something you can't control. (this can be people or how much money you have or getting recognition in your life)You compare your life to others. You spend time with people who are overly negative. You are enduring things that don't make you happy. (friendships, jobs, activities)All these things & many more can be such huge happiness roadblocks in your life. But if we learn how to navigate the hard moments & seasons in life, we will have the ability to be happy whenever we choose, dependent on our effort to shift our mindset.Today I want to share with you 7 ways to be happy even when life is tough & sucks:Don't be too critical of yourself.Take moments to slow down & think. Learn something new. Widen your perspective & apply gratitude.Make a list of things you can actually change.Find something to look forward to each day. Help someone else. Thank you again for listening & I hope this episode was helpful.Come visit me on my Instagram page @sabrinajoyperozzo.Anonymous survey for topic suggestions for the show:https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScqcg0URMsH61Evk_3SiSURBkNuk5aUZVo97H5nuLVB0q36Iw/viewform?usp=sf_linkHave any questions, comments, or feedback?  Send me an email at realpositivegirlpodcast@gmail.com or check out my website, www.sabrinajoy.com where you can listen to all my episodes, send me messages & sign up for my weekly newsletter https://www.sabrinajoy.com/newsletter!Join the NEW RealPositiveGirl Community group on Facebook!https://www.facebook.com/groups/realpositivegirlDonate to the Show: patreon.com/realpositivegirlSupport the show

Photographer and author of "Comfortably Uncomfortable- The Road to Happiness Isn't Always Paved", Jacquelyn Phillips is out living her truth and sharing her story to help others who are tired of living in a constant cycle of self destruction. Breaking barriers of childhood trauma, self loathing and manipulative behaviors, she has found the tools and the talent to unlearn actions that kept her away from the drain of hopelessness and despair- even if she kept a smile on her face. An active voice in the mental heath community, she is an avid fitness fan, coffee addict, mother to teenage son, wife to an amazingly patient husband and friend to many. When she's not on the job, she is out creating art, travelling and experimenting in the kitchen.  "Comfortably Uncomfortable" is available for purchase on Amazon and available free with Kindle Unlimited. You can learn how to tap into a life of happiness, even if your life is a mess, once you learn the art of happiness. In this coaching podcast, learn why happiness sometimes eludes you and how you can create more happiness in your life, without your circumstances changing. Get the full show notes at www.trishblackwell.com/485   In this episode of The Confidence Podcast, we're talking about:   How happiness isn't an accident, and you can create it for yourselfWhy some people are happy and others aren'tThe art of happiness, and how to engage in it daily The messiness of a happy life and what happy really looks like  Happy International Women's Day!   REVIEW OF THE WEEK    Go glad. Hi Trish, I had found your podcast via "keep the faith" about 4 years ago. I do believe God led me to you. Growing up I had a wonderful loving family (still do) however I always felt sad. IT made me feel even worse because I didn't have anything to make me feel that way. I 've always had felt left out and struggled with friend issues that made me feel like something is wrong with me. I have been hooked on your podcast and I tell everyone about you because I have feel myself improving!!! Slowly but surely. I not longer thank I'm the only one. And boy, is that a relief! You have BLESSED me for these past 2 years and all for FREE!!!!! I feel the LOVE and "back at cha baby!" So glad I joined the college for the next chapter of Happiness! Love, Deanna   Everyone's life is messy. Your circumstances aren't what make you happy - your thoughts are.   HAPPINESS ISN'T AN ACCIDENT   It's not just for the lucky. It's for the intentional. It's available to everyone. Decide to be happy.Study happy people.Know your happy habits.Practice the art of active appreciation.Ground yourself in gratitude. NBC news poll recently found that only 14% of Americans reports to be very happy. That's down from 31% who said the same in 2018. 45% of Americans reported feeling isolated or lonely.    Two thirds of adults globally  (64%) report being happy: 14% very much so and 50% rather so. Countries with the highest proportion of adults considering themselves as very happy are Canada (29%), Australia, Saudi Arabia and India (28% each), Great Britain and the United States (27% each). (Global Happiness Study 2019)    WHY AREN'T YOU HAPPY?    Most likely because you're looking to your circumstances to make you happy. It's your thoughts that creates happiness, not what happens in your life.  Too focused on the wrong things  -fear -what could go wrong -"being realistic" -avoiding emotions -what other people might think -achievement for fulfillment We're distracted by our own business We stay too busy to be happy.    UNHAPPINESS CONTRIBUTORS   Comparison to others.Lack of gratitudeStuck in comfort zoneYou don't move your bodyYou are always in your past or your futureFlawed beliefs (thinking it's supposed to be easier, or that negative emotions shouldn't exist)Busyness (too busy to think, reflect, notice, self-care, live well)  95% of our 60-80,000 thoughts per day are repeated thoughts.    THE ART OF HAPPINESS   HAPPINESS HABITS Activate appreciation Reframing thoughts Mental maintenance  Physical activity Time to be Other Contributors to Happiness Adventure Falling is learning Openness  Curiosity Happiness doesn't mean that it's a state of permanence. It's an emotion, that ebbs and flows, and when you feel it, you ride it. When is recoils, you know another wave is coming - nothing has gone wrong. "there is taken care of" Intentional and active appreciation What about others who drag you down? "must stink to be in their brain…" "there thoughts are their choices, I'm grateful I know how to not stay in a funk

Happiness is fleeting, depending on the season of life you're going through. Being authentically you is what holds strong & gets you through the tough times. You can be all of your emotions. You're not held to just happiness.Show Notes:The older I get, the more I realize how complicated happiness is because it's not the same for everyone & it can be experienced on varying degrees. And the varying degrees part is so important because when I was younger, it seemed like if you were happy, it was the top of the scale of positive feelings. There was nothing higher or more for you to achieve. When in reality, I can be minimally happy, mediumly happy, or even more than happy. There are also expectations with everyone needing to be happy. I believe it's perfectly fine to just be content in life, which is different than happy. Content is more accepting of life with a positive attitude & happy is more excited about life. And then there are the smiling police. You know, those people that tell you to smile because it's more socially acceptable to feign positive feelings than just be how you are. It's their insecurities being placed on you because it's uncomfortable for them to see someone not smiling or even venture into a conversation that isn't positive or easy to breeze through. It's the idea that being fake is easier than being real & vulnerable. Which it is, unfortunately. But it shouldn't be this way.One of the biggest reasons why you don't need to be happy all the time is that negative experiences are so helpful to us. Despite how hard & difficult negative experiences are, these moments can push us to grow & change & continue to become our best selves. When we experience guilt, it causes us to make things right where we have done wrong. When we are angry, it can cause us to really evaluate what needs to change in our lives or isn't going well & lead us to figure out why that is. Another reason we don't need to be happy all the time is because happiness doesn't equal fulfillment. We can be sad & be fulfilled, or even exhausted & be fulfilled. There are times in life where we have to work really hard, which isn't always fun, but it's still something positive & fulfilling for us in the end. Keeping our promises when we don't really want to doesn't evoke happiness, but we know it's the right thing to do & that makes us feel good. And the things that lead directly to happiness aren't always things we should be doing. Like sitting on the couch day in, day out, watching tv & eating unhealthy snacks. Taking from someone else for your benefit, even knowing it will hurt someone else. Being dishonest to get what you want. Happiness can actually be selfish if it's based on getting only what you want, even if others are burned in the process. But I don't want you to be holding your happiness back. If you are happy, be happy. Something that I struggle with is allowing my happiness to bleed through because if someone else around me isn't happy, I feel like I can't be happy either because it could make them feel worse. Which is logical if you're a people pleaser. But it's silly because the happiness you have could actually help someone else be more happy in times of negativity.Living your life isn't about being happy all the time. It's about being your authentic self & leaning into vulnerability & honoring your emotions, positive or negative. Thank you again for listening & I hope this episode was helpful.Come visit me on my Instagram page @sabrinajoyperozzo to say hi or on Clubhouse @sabrinajperozzo to chat!Have any questions, comments or feedback?  Send me an email at realpositivegirlpodcast@gmail.com!Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/sabrinajoy)

“A truth is an experience, it's not a thought.”-Bill O'Herron, LCSWBill O'Herron, LCSW is a corporate executive, practicing therapist (weekends and evenings), and writer who seeks to use his 33 years of financial sales management experience, 24 years of marriage, 15 years of counseling clients, and 8,500 hours of sitting quietly to help his clients better understand themselves and deepen their relationships. Bill teaches that all our relationships with others, especially our marriage, started in 4th grade, when our limbic-emotional body learned, absorbed, and inherited our parents' lives and experiences. His research shows that relationships fail for one single reason: a lack of understanding of one's own emotions and reaction patterns created in childhood. His work with archetypes demonstrates also that relationships are not a single experience or dyad between two people but are eight unique relationships all occurring at the same time. Three key concepts he uses to accelerate client's work are Stand in the Fire, 2nd Law of Thermodynamics at Home, and Relatus. These three provide direct access to understanding self.Connect with BillWholeCounseling.com“Waking Up Marriage: Finding Truth In Your Partnership” by Bill O'Herron, LCSWSubscribe to The Mosaic Life Podcast Clips on YouTubeSign Up for The Mosaic Life Podcast Circle NewsletterTimestamps00:04:19 Welcome, Bill!00:07:55 Meditation & Our Monkey Brains00:11:53 Understanding Our Left Brain / Right Brain Relationship00:18:31 How We Relax the Relational Brain00:21:58 Tracing Our Thoughts to Our Feelings00:23:47 How We Can Be Comfortable Sitting Alone00:32:45 What We Do to Slow Down Our Rational Minds00:39:43 The Intuition Project00:50:37 Happiness Isn't a Steady State00:53:47 Waiting for the Other Shoe to Drop00:57:16 Resources Bill is Looking For00:58:58 Connecting with Bill00:59:50 Bill's Life-Changing Book01:01:37 Bill's Personal Call to Action01:02:59 Thank You, Bill!Bill's Life-Changing Book(s)“Autobiography of a Yogi” by Paramhansa Yogananda“Ultimate Journey” by Robert Monroe“The Universe Story” by Brian SwimmeBooks Mentioned“Homecoming: Reclaiming and Championing Your Inner Child” by John Bradshaw“Beyond the Brain” by Stanislav Grof“Seth Speaks” by Jane Roberts“The Power of Now” by Eckhart TolleAdditional ResourcesCycles of Seven and Learning to Flow with the CyclesDunning-Kruger EffectNeocortexReticular Activating SystemMidbrainOur Three Brains – The Reptilian BrainWhat Is The Divine Feminine?Piscean AgeAquarian ageThe 12 House of the ZodiacThe Monroe InstituteLimbic SystemSolar PlexusKent State UniversityStanislav Grof And His Famous Holotropic Breathwork | GaiaEverything You Need to Know About DMT, the ‘Spirit Molecule' | HealthlineWhat Is Ayahuasca? From Anthony DeMello's book The Way to Love.  Narration by Paul Coutinho. What you call the experience of happiness is not happiness at all but the excitement and thrill caused by some person or thing or event. True happiness is un-caused. You are happy for no reason at all. And true happiness cannot be experienced. It is not within the realm of consciousness. It is un-self-consciousness.
