It is taking far too long for us to acknowledge the damage we have done to the world's water and to indigenous people and to take action : truth, reconciliation, change. Scientists have discovered that some whale songs actually evolve over time. It is my hope that the choirs who perform this work with me and all those who hear it will refuse to let what the whales are saying be lost in the ocean and will join their song in calling for respect and reciprocity. (Deantha Edmunds, May 19, 2024, Podium 2024)Stay humble, keep listening and keep learning. That is how we will use choral music as a way to advocate and change the environmental crisis that we're facing (Elise Naccarato, May 19, 2024, Podium 2024)Note: a transcript of this show and a translation of episode é157 podium 2024 - que pouvons-nous chanter et faire de plus ? can be found in the 'Transcript' tab.Welcome to a special episode of the conscient podcast featuring a bilingual panel that I facilitate called ‘Voicing the ecological crisis: what more can we sing and do? It recorded on Sunday, May 19, 2024, as part of Podium 2024, the Open Voices, Open Minds choral conference and festival organized by Choral Canada and l'Alliance chorale du Québec in Tiohtià:ke on the unceded traditional territory of the Kanien'keha:kaé (Montreal).I had the honor of selecting the panelists and moderating this important conversation. You will hear the presentations of Deantha Edmunds and Elise Naccarato in English in this episode. I invite you to listen to é157 of balado conscient to hear the French language presentations from this panel by Megan Chartrand and Sarah Fioravanti. You'll find a transcription of their presentations in the ‘transcript' section of this episode. I have to admit that the subject of our conversation that Sunday afternoon was extremely serious, complex and I'd even say existential, but I reminded the assembly that I had promised in the program that we would ‘leave the conversation with a practical reality check while humming with hope'.But how does one ‘hum with hope' when we are facing imminent societal collapse due to ? I asked the group and I asked myself how choral music or collective singing can help?I also reminded delegates that the ecological crisis, be it climate change, loss of biodiversity, the ravages of extractive capitalism, etc is deepening at a frightening pace, leaving many, including artists, feeling disempowered, demoralized and sometimes in denial. So when Meghan Hila, the Executive Director of Choral Canada, asked me to help out with this panel, I was very pleased to facilitate conversations about climate change specifically and how commissioning new works on ecological themes, strategies to decrease the carbon footprint of choral music activities and how to engage in increased collective political action as a community of artists and singers. I admire the leadership of Choral Canada and learned a lot from listening to their artistic work and innovative strategies. The congress itself was quite fabulous and it was good to remember that the Canadian choral community has a long history of engagement and foresight with environmental issues. For example, during Podium 2024, Nicholas Fairbank talked about Environmental Topics in Canadian Choral Music and the long list of choral music that are already in circulation on environmental themes.I also attended a session by composer Katerina Gimon, poet Lauren Peat and conductor Elise Naccarato about their Unsung: If the Earth Could Sing project, an environmentally-inspired choral cycle and so on over 3 days.I also heard about choral activities that explore some of the root causes of the ecological crisis such as colonisation and disconnection from nature. The Friday night, May 17th I attended a groundbreaking concert called Ahskennon'nia : songs of peace where one of our panelists, Deantha Edmunds, was a soloist. She talks about it during her presentation. Deantha was also a soloist on May 18th with her Song of the Whale composition performed with the Holy Heart Chamber Choir of Newfoundland. I was deeply moved by this gorgeous soundscape composition that ends with the words ‘carry the song on, evolve'. Those 5 words stayed with me : ‘Carry the song on, evolve…'I also heard some engaging discourse about the intersection of indigenous and non-indigenous musical collaborations, about moving from the colonial notion of choirs towards collective and group singing, about how choirs are often a microcosm of the diversity of our society with all its complexities, how the canon of choral music is being challenged and rethought, how listening itself is evolving and so on. However, what I do not hear at this congress, and to be honest, I don't hear it much elsewhere in the arts sector, is a recognition and a sense of urgency that we are in an existential climate and nature emergency. This was troubling to me. For example, as we spoke on May 19th, wildfires were ravaging across western Canada and our fellow citizens were migrating to safer ground and that sadly this pattern will be amplified in the future. But I also said that who better than artists, singers, composers and educators to help society work through these complexities…For example, professor Adam Con from the University of Victoria mentioned at a panel on education that choral music is well suited to the challenges that we face because collective singing is participative, community engaging, cooperative, inclusive and accessible activity.I agree with Professor Con and think we're going to need more choral community activities about the ecological crisis as our future unfolds.First you'll hear Inuk singer and composer Deantha Edmunds, who will talk about her experience with performances about the ecological crisis and reconciliation. She speaks for 10 minutes followed by conductor and choral music director Elise Naccarato, who will share her experience and insights with commissioning and producing choral works about social justice and ecological issues. After the panel presentations there were 3 questions from the audience. This first was about the predominance of women in climate change advocacy. Deantha Edmunds responded. The second intervention was from veteran choral music composer Donald Patriquin. As a composer and as a proactive composer, singers and we must all get the ecological message out to those who will inherit the earth. Who are those: the children. There has to be much more there because they absorb so much. They absorb much more than we do at our age. So let's compose works for children.'The final question was about programming and audience response to socially engaged music to which Elise Naccarato and Deantha Edmunds responded. Please see links in the episode notes for the panlists bios and note that the sound quality was not optimal because of the reverberation in the room so please pay close attention or consult the transcription when in doubt. *END NOTES FOR ALL EPISODESHere is a link for more information on season 5. In this episode of Don't Call Me Resilient, we take a look at the ongoing struggle for land rights and some of the women on the front lines of that battle. These women are the land defenders fighting to protect land against invasive development. Both our guests have stood up to armed forces to protect land.Their work is about protecting the environment. But it is much more than that: it is fundamentally about survival and about the right to live openly on what is stolen land.Ellen Gabriel has been resisting land encroachment for 31 years. She was at the centre of the 1990 Kanehsatake resistance, (known as the Oka crisis), a 78-day standoff to protect ancestral Kanien'kéha:ka (Mohawk) land in Québec. It was a moment in history that many say helped wake them up to Indigenous issues.Anne Spice is a professor of geography and history at Toronto Metroppolitan University. Anne, who is Tlingit from Kwanlin Dun First Nation, was recently on the front lines in the defence of Wet'suwet'en land. After she was arrested on Wet'suwet'en territory last year, a viral video showed the RCMP pointing a gun at the land defenders.Anne can be heard shouting, we are unarmed and we are peaceful. These are the moments that capture our collective attention. But Ellen and Anne's work goes well beyond what the cameras show. For more resources and information about this, go here: SHOW NOTESA full transcript of this episode can be found here: TRANSCRIPT

Getting to have a full understanding of those who lived here before us is just so very vital....On this very special episode we dive into a vital docu-series which is now on CBC Gem. It's time for 'Telling Our Story'.From page one of the history books, the notion that the First Nations were “discovered.” is a little ridiculous. In a sardonic look back, we're told that the Europeans were the ones who were discovered, starving on their boats, with Jacques Cartier losing 11 men to scurvy before being given a vitamin-laden conifer tea by Iroquois Chief Donnacona. With this starting point, turning history right-side up, Telling Our Story connects beautiful natural scenery with tales and traditions and eloquent and charismatic protagonists from 11 First Peoples – 11 cultures speaking 11 different languages – who inhabited what's now Quebec, Ontario and New Brunswick. They are: Abenaki, Anishinaabe, Atikamekw, Cree of Eeyou Istchee, Innu, Inuit, Kanien'kehá:ka, Mi'kmaq, Naskapi, Huron-Wendat and Wolastoqiyik. Their stories are, in turn, heart-warming, heartbreaking, hopeful and absolutely vital..After it's premiere at TIFF we had the unique pleasure of sitting down with director Kim O'Bomswain about the origins of the project, the multi-platform nature of it all, being able to experience mass audience reactions at a festival like TIFF and so very much more.Telling Our Story is streaming on CBC Gem now.

The Mohawk Warrior Society is one of the most successful militant organizations in North America. Their predecessors were key to the defeat of the French in Quebec and the United States in the War of 1812. Today, the Warriors are best known for their role in the 1990 Oka standoff against the Canadian army. In the new book, The Mohawk Warrior Society: A Handbook on Sovereignty and Survival, the movement for the first time tells its own history. We are joined by the editors of this unique anthology of resistance, Philippe Blouin, Matt Peterson, Malek Rasamny and Kahentinetha Rotiskarewake and also by Kwetiio and Karennatha who, along with Kahentinetha, are members of the group Kanien'kehà:ka Kanistansera, the Mohawk Mothers.

In this episode we have a roundtable discussion grounded around the book The Mohawk Warrior Society: A Handbook on Sovereignty and Survival. For this discussion we have all four of the editors of this book, Philippe Blouin, Matt Peterson, Malek Rasamny and Kahentinetha Rotsikarewake. In addition Karennatha and Kawenaa, two other members of Kanien'keha:ka Kahnistensera (Mohawk Mothers) joined the conversation. The book we discuss does a lot of things. It presents the works of Louis Karoniaktajeh Hall, it discusses what the Mohawk Warrior Society is, and Louis Hall's influence and participation and activation of that movement as an autonomous political force. It also discusses some of the history of their vibrant and at times quite successful struggles against colonialism, but also against forces of assimilation, annihilation, and appropriation. The book also provides a number of resources to help understand the philosophy embedded in Mohawk language and thought, in which the Mohawk Warrior Society is grounded. This is a sovereign tradition of anticolonial resistance to genocide that crosses the imposed colonial borders of the US and Canada, and still exists in defiance of setter law and ways of knowing. As is discussed in the show, it is also potentially a guide or an offering. The Mohawk Warrior Society has out of necessity often been a somewhat secretive formation, this book and conversation offer a glimpse into their world view, and it's incumbent upon us to listen in and take note. This virtual roundtable features six guests. Due to time constraints there is just a lot that we weren't able to get to in this conversation and so we really encourage folks to pick up the book and read it. We'll include links in the show notes. The book's editors and our guests are: Kahentinetha Rotiskarewake is a Kanien'kehá:ka (Gon-e-en-gay-ha-ga) from the Bear Clan in Kahnawà:ke. Initially working in the fashion industry, Kahentinetha went on to play a key role as speaker and writer in the Indigenous resistance, a role which she has fulfilled consistently for the last six decades. During this time, she witnessed and took part in numerous struggles, including the blockade of the Akwesasne border crossing in 1968. She has published several books, including Mohawk Warrior Three: The Trial of Lasagna, Noriega & 20–20 (Owera Books, 1994), and has been in charge of running the Mohawk Nation News service since the Oka Crisis in 1990. She now cares for her twenty children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Kahentinetha means she who is always at the forefront. Philippe Blouin writes, translates and studies political anthropology and philosophy in Tionitiohtià:kon (Montréal). His current PhD research at McGill University seeks to understand and share the teachings of the Teiohá:te (Two Row Wampum) to build decolonial alliances. His work has been published in Liaisons, Stasis and PoLAR. He also wrote an afterword to George Sorel's Reflections on Violence. Matt Peterson is an organizer at Woodbine, an experimental space in New York City. He is the co-director of The Native and the Refugee, multimedia documentary project on American Indian reservations and Palestinian refugee camps. Malek Rasamny co-directed the research project The Native and the Refugee and the feature film Spaces of Exception. He is currently a doctoral candidate in the department of Social Anthropology and Ethnology at the Ecole des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) in Paris. And as I said Karennatha and Kawenaa who are two other members of Kanien'keha:ka Kahnistensera (Mohawk Mothers) joined the conversation as well. It was an honor to host them. And if you appreciate conversations like this, we are on a push for the month of March to add 40 patrons, we're about half way there, and we have just less than half of the month remaining so kick in $1 a month and join the wonderful people who make this show possible and become a patron of the show. We've got a heaping scoop of racism and colonialist bullshit this week, including but not limited to a very troubling (and problematic af!) origin story of the Slayer line! Our tenth 'MINI' INDIGENA of the season runs the gamut as usual, with MEDIA INDIGENA regulars Ken Williams (assistant professor with the University of Alberta's department of drama) and Kim TallBear (U of A professor in the Faculty of Native Studies) joining host/producer Rick Harp Saturday, June 11 via the Callin app to discuss... • Riffing off “an African sense of western gender discourses” (as detailed in the book The Invention of Women by Oyeronke Oyewumi), Kim wants to know what Rick and Ken's dating dealbreakers are; • Ken delves into the story of Cree/Métis scholar Réal Carrière, who told CBC he was rejected for a job by higher-ups at the University of Saskatchewan—despite the wishes of a mostly Indigenous hiring committee—due to a lack of documentation; • Boardgaming nerd Rick shares news sent his way about Ezhishin, the “first-ever conference on Native North American typography” set for this November; • monthly Patreon podcast supporter Mark asks us to discuss Bill 96, the new Quebec language law which will effectively require English-schooled students “of Kanien'kehá:ka, Cree, Inuit and Algonquin ancestry … to master two colonial languages to attain a college degree”

Dear friend of the pod Helen Zalztman (The Allusionist, Answer Me This!) joins us today for a deep dive into linguistics in Buffy the Vampire Slayer! Why does Giles' leatherbound book use a "Y" in Vampyre? Why does television rely so heavily on Latin to convey magic spells? Where does the word "coven" originate? Did Buffy coin the term "wiggins"?! Buffering the Vampire Slayer | A Buffy the Vampire Slayer Podcast
We celebrated the 25th Anniversary of Buffy the Vampire Slayer from Torrance High School, aka Sunnydale High, with hundreds of your beautiful nerdy faces — and it was one of the best nights of our damn lives. We are going through some of our favorite high-school moments from Buffy, including the infamous Oedipus Rex performance at the end of "The Puppet Show," (17:22) the meeting of The Mayor, Faith, Buffy, Angel and everyone else in "Choices," (33:12) and that romantically terrifying lovers-to-ghosts possession in "I Only Have Eyes For You" (55:14). Oh, and then we prove that Buffy and Faith absolutely totally entirely had sex with each other (1:10:20). It was truly a night for the books.+ THE BUFFY + FAITH HAD SEX PowerPoint PresentationTODAY IS THE LAST DAY TO WATCH US LIVE: 25TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF BUFFY AT SUNNYDALE HIGHAn epic evening of live music, conversation, special guests, and oh-so-much laughter broadcast live from Torrance High School!momenthouse.com/bufferingthevampireslayerLOCATE YOUR HOSTS UPON THE INTERNETJenny Owen Youngs: @jennyowenyoungs; jennyowenyoungs.comKristin Russo: @kristinnoeline; kristinnoeline.comBuffering the Vampire Slayer: @bufferingcast on twitter, facebook, and instagramLearn more about our team at bufferingthevampireslayer.com/our-team Special Guests: LaToya Ferguson, Morgan Lutich, Evan Ross Katz, and Joanna RobinsonScoop up Evan's new book "Into Every Generation A Slayer Is Born: How Buffy Staked Our Hearts"Produced by: Kristin Russo, Jenny Owen Youngs, and Zoe ReganEdited by: John Mark Nelson & Kristin RussoLogo: Kristine Thune+++SUPPORT US ON PATREON!Advance Music, Bonus Episodes, Live Concerts, Book Clubs, wheeeee!!patreon.com/bufferingcastSCOOP SOME MERCH!Smash the Patriarchy with Buffering T-Shirts, Hoodies, Sweatpants, Pins!bufferingthevampireslayer.com/shop+++We acknowledge that we and our team are occupying unceded and stolen lands and territories.
