Revisiting: Buffering with Alcohol

In this episode of the Alcohol Minimalist Podcast, Molly revisits one of the show's most popular topics: buffering.Buffering is what we do when we use alcohol, food, shopping, scrolling, or other distractions to avoid uncomfortable emotions. It is not a character flaw—it is a human coping strategy driven by a brain wired to seek pleasure and avoid pain.Molly explains how alcohol can become a buffer for stress, boredom, insecurity, or discomfort, and why temporary relief often leads to more anxiety, regret, or overconsumption later. The goal is not to feel good all the time. The goal is to build awareness, feel your feelings, and stop using alcohol to escape your life. In This EpisodeYou'll learn: What buffering is  Why alcohol is commonly used to avoid emotions  How the lower brain seeks quick relief  Why buffering creates temporary pleasure but long-term consequences  How awareness helps you change your drinking habits  Why feeling discomfort is part of creating a peaceful relationship with alcohol Key TakeawayBuffering does not solve uncomfortable emotions—it only delays them. When you stop using alcohol to numb, distract, or escape, you can begin to understand what you are actually feeling and create real, lasting change.Reflection QuestionThe next time you want a drink, pause and ask:“What am I feeling right now, and what am I trying not to feel?”Low risk drinking guidelines from the NIAAA:Healthy men under 65:No more than 4 drinks in one day and no more than 14 drinks per week.Healthy women (all ages) and healthy men 65 and older:No more than 3 drinks in one day and no more than 7 drinks per week. One drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor. So remember that a mixed drink or full glass of wine are probably more than one drink.Abstinence from alcoholAbstinence from alcohol is the best choice for people who take medication(s) that interact with alcohol, have health conditions that could be exacerbated by alcohol (e.g. liver disease), are pregnant or may become pregnant or have had a problem with alcohol or another substance in the past.Benefits of “low-risk” drinkingFollowing these guidelines reduces the risk of health problems such as cancer, liver disease, reduced immunity, ulcers, sleep problems, complications of existing conditions, and more. It also reduces the risk of depression, social problems, and difficulties at school or work. ★ Support this podcast ★

Computer scientist Keith Winstein is an expert in how computers communicate. Computer networks create what he calls shared fictions – abstract realities, like a website or a Zoom call, that exist only because the computers on either end agree to act as if they are real. Unfortunately, today's networks lack a shared notion of a “computation,” which hurts market efficiency in cloud computing and frustrates efforts to hold tech companies accountable for the results of their algorithms. As computational power becomes concentrated in a smaller number of companies, Winstein advocates for a shared language of “computational truths,” defining computations precisely so results are reproducible and auditable. His research group hopes this will lead to greater transparency and accountability in the cloud and, ultimately, to greater confidence in the computations that companies do every day on our behalf. The truth matters, Winstein tells host Russ Altman on this episode of Stanford Engineering's The Future of Everything podcast. Have a question for Russ? hi hello hey… oh, are you waving at us?? We've done many an episode about the unique situations we find ourselves in while navigating a world with limited vision, and this one offers a fresh take on a very enduring experience. After living for 30 years (an average of our ages), we've realized our brains aren't exactly built for speedy visual processing. When your vision is limited, your brain gets less information to work with—and sometimes it feels like it's just… buffering. This isn't a visual processing disorder; it's simply our brains doing their best with what they've got. The result? Occasional awkward pauses, missed cues, and moments where we look completely spaced out. But there's also a flip side. Because we don't get bogged down in tiny visual details, our brains have learned to compensate in pretty cool ways. We make decisions based on shapes, colors, patterns, and context—and honestly, we're often surprisingly accurate. (And when we're not, the fails are at least validating proof to our friends that no, we're not being dramatic about our vision.) related episodes If you want more proof that our eyes love putting us in funny situations, check out these episodes: 52. our lives are just one long, awkward moment for more on navigating social situations with low vision. 114. please, read the room!!! on choosing our battles—when to disclose and ask for accommodations, and when to let things go. 17. do we want a cure? our thoughts on not fixing our vision. Next week is Christmas, and as Michelle reflects on the season—what it holds, what it doesn't, and the quieter spaces many of us feel at this time of year—an insight from a yin yoga class offers an unexpected theme: boredom. In yin yoga, long-held poses can bring up discomfort, restlessness, and resistance…but what caught Michelle's attention was her teacher's invitation to notice boredom specifically. That word landed immediately, because boredom wasn't just present in the pose—it was familiar in life. From there, Michelle explores boredom as one of the “quieter” emotions we're rarely taught to recognize, name, or stay present with. She shares a powerful childhood message about packing emotions into a shoebox and putting them away, and explains how many adults grow up fluent in managing the “big” emotions—like anger, grief, or anxiety—while remaining unsure what to do with subtler ones like boredom. But emotions aren't problems to fix. They're signals—like dashboard lights—offering information from your nervous system about what's happening inside and around you.Boredom, Michelle suggests, is often uncomfortable not because it's painful, but because it's empty. It creates space, and for many of us, space doesn't feel safe. That's why boredom becomes prime buffering territory: snacking when we're not hungry, scrolling without thinking, turning on noise, opening tabs, staying busy—anything to outrun the sensation of “nothing happening.” The goal isn't to judge these patterns. It's to recognize them. Because bored eating often looks and feels different than hunger-based eating, and without emotional awareness, we end up eating at boredom rather than listening to what it's asking for.Michelle invites you to consider what boredom might be teaching: a need for rest, novelty, connection, creativity—or a deeper discomfort with being alone with yourself. She shares how boredom has shown up in her own seasons of hustle and burnout, and how her resistance to stillness once made meditation feel nearly impossible. And she offers a simple, powerful practice: notice boredom in micro-moments (red lights, waiting rooms, the kettle boiling), name it, feel it in your body, notice the urge to escape, and stay with it for just ten more seconds. The episode closes with a layered personal insight: the contrast between poses like pigeon—where discomfort makes the emotional message loud—and more comfortable poses where boredom emerges and the lesson is quieter. In that quiet, Michelle recognizes a theme that's been following her: patience. Not forcing action because of anxiety, but slowing down long enough to let the message come through. And she invites you to reflect on your own relationship with boredom—and to reach out and share what you discover. In this episode, you'll learn:Why boredom is a “quiet” emotion that often gets overlookedHow boredom creates space—and why space can feel unsafeWhat buffering is, and why boredom is prime buffering territory (food, scrolling, busyness, noise)How bored eating differs from hunger-based eatingHow emotions function as nervous system “dashboard lights,” not problems to fixWhat boredom may be trying to communicate (rest, connection, novelty, creativity, burnout, fear of stillness)A simple micro-practice to build tolerance for boredom: name it, feel it, notice the urge, pause for 10 secondsWhy learning to sit with boredom supports emotional resilience and body trustHow yin yoga revealed a deeper theme: patience, and letting decisions come from clarity rather than urgency     Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The Alpha Male Coach Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 10, 2025 44:49

Kevin cuts straight to the heart of what true transformation actually is in this episode: spiritual movement - the inner work that rewrites your perception and, in doing so, rewires the Matrix you live inside. This isn't about hustling harder or rearranging circumstances. It's about changing the film you project so the movie of your life stops repeating the same lessons.Kevin opens by clarifying a crucial distinction: physical movement is the visible result - bodies, objects, and events shifting in space. Spiritual movement happens first; it's the shift in thought, intention, and perception that rearranges the hologram and yields new outcomes. You, as the localized center of consciousness, are the projector. Your energy is the continuous light; your conditioning is the film. Change the film, and the projection changes. He names two concrete, difficult practices that create spiritual movement. First: decision-making. Decisions don't require physical effort, but they require courage. Making a choice injects certainty into your intention - not certainty of the outcome, but certainty of direction. Kevin uses the Alan Watts anecdote to show why mental choices are harder than manual labor: the mind resists because it must face infinite data, doubt, and imagination. Choosing anyway turns on a little light in the dark room of amnesia and lets the hologram begin to shift.Second: restriction. Kevin frames restriction as transforming reactivity - interrupting the habit of instant gratification (fight, flight, freeze) and converting it into a non-reactive, present pause. That pause - the space between feeling and action - is where you process, not react. Buffering, lashing out, fleeing into distractions, or numbing keeps you replaying the same film. Restriction is ego-death from the ego's view, but it's spiritual growth from the center's perspective: it stops old patterns and lets a new film be loaded. He connects these practices back into the Alpha Male Coach foundations: the spiritual blueprint (remembering who you are) and the Matrix curriculum (seeing how your projections create systems that now master you). The aim isn't escape - it's evolution: awake to your role as projector, choose with authority, restrict the reactive pattern, and then follow through. Action and follow-through - keeping your word - are the third pillar of indomitable self-confidence and the engine that turns decision into real-world change.Throughout the episode Kevin gives practical imagery - the dark room with every treasure already inside, the projector-screen-film analogy, and the pause between F-line and A-line - so listeners can apply this immediately. This episode is a call to stop editing the screen and start changing the film. Do the inner work: decide, restrict, follow through - and watch the hologram rearrange itself to serve you.

In this honest and emotional (!) episode, I share how I've noticed myself buffering my emotions by not following my plan recently. When we feel new, deeper levels of uncomfortable emotions, it can mean we stop doing the things (like writing and following our daily food and drinks plan) that we know make us ultimately feel better. But these backslides aren't failures — they're opportunities to double down on what we want. Our emotions aren't to be evaded or escaped, they're to be embraced and processed, and we need to give ourselves the opportunity to do that. Our primal brains and past self will say the urge is more important than following our plan. And our highest self would always say otherwise.Because every time we recommit to the outcomes we want and believe in our capability and capacity to manage our emotions without soothing them away with food and alcohol, we are rewarded — not only with confidence in our minds and bodies, but with pride and self-belief, which makes us stronger for the next obstacle we'll face. We're recommitting to the life we want and our belief that we're worthy of it — and that we're the only ones responsible for creating it. Have a listen and let me know what you think. sallywebstercoaching.comInteresting in changing your eating and drinking habits? Join me for 1:1 coaching this month! Find out more here >

BIO: Andy Sparks, PhD, was an academic in the UK for ~25 years and is now the Research Innovations Manager for Maurten AB, Sweden, and an Honorary Visiting Research Fellow at Liverpool John Moores University, UK. His research focuses on nutritional interventions to enhance sports performance, particularly the use of sodium bicarbonate. He has published extensively on a range of topics in exercise physiology and sports nutrition, with a particular interest in endurance cycling and running performance.Dr. Andy Sparks shares his expertise on sodium bicarbonate as an overlooked yet highly effective ergogenic aid for sports performance, with a particular focus on recent advances in delivery methods that minimize gastrointestinal distress. He explains the science behind bicarbonate supplementation and reveals why this supplement deserves more attention from athletes across multiple sports.Key Points!• Sodium bicarbonate is recognized as an A-list evidence-based supplement by the Australian Institute of Sport• Traditional delivery methods caused GI distress, giving the supplement a negative reputation despite its effectiveness• Works as an extracellular buffer that helps manage hydrogen ions during high-intensity exercise• May also reduce pain perception during exercise, explaining benefits in longer-duration events• Effective for high-intensity activities (400m-3000m races), intermittent sports, and even endurance events• Dosing varies widely (0.1-0.3g/kg bodyweight) with significant inter-individual response variability• Peak blood bicarbonate levels occur between 15-90 minutes post-ingestion, depending on delivery method• The Maurten bicarb system combines mini-tablets with a carbohydrate hydrogel to maximize effectiveness while minimizing GI issues• Safety concerns relate primarily to sodium load rather than bicarbonate itself• Particularly beneficial for race strategies with high-intensity starts followed by sustained effortsThe Maurten bicarb system is available online at maurten.com, with region-specific sites including a US option.
