After a longer than expected Spring hiatus, The Film '89 Podcast is back and on Episode 134, returning co-hosts Matthias Van De Roest and Bill Scurry join Steve and Skye to celebrate the 40th anniversary of acclaimed director William Friedkin's 1985 crime drama To Live and Die in L.A. Something of a return to form for Friedkin after a number of critical and commercial failures, the film would tap into the same gritty police procedural approach that made his 1971 masterpiece The French Connection so successful. Starring William Petersen, John Pankow, Debra Feuer, Darlanne Fluegel, Dean Stockwell, John Turturro and featuring a brilliantly threatening turn from Willem Dafoe as counterfeiter Eric Masters, To Live and Die in L.A. also features gorgeous cinematography by Robby Müller and a stunning new wave soundtrack by Wang Chung. As well as giving their usual in-depth analysis, the guys also dig into the making of the film, paying particular attention to its incredible car chase sequence. So fasten your seatbelts and hold on tight as the Film '89 team explore one of the quintessential crime dramas of not just the 1980s, but any decade.

Rhode Island's multi-platinum John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band, will be celebrating 50+ years in the business with the release of "Sound of Waves," a new 13 song album, their first in 37 years. In 1982, John Cafferty was commissioned to write and perform the soundtrack for a film that turned out to be "Eddie and the Cruisers,' a rock cult classic with a triple platinum soundtrack. Cafferty's soulful, raspy voice propelled the movie's theme "On the Dark Side" to # 1 on the Billboard Rock charts and the MTV video charts, while the movie's second hit "Tender Years" rose into the Top 10 of the Billboard AC charts. Today John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band continue to tour around the world. That tour will bring them to NYC for an album release concert at the Cutting Room on Thursday, April 10th, the same date as the album release, from Moonstone Music. According to Cafferty, the new album almost didn't happen. After almost four decades of not writing and recording new music, he was encouraged by Bruce Springsteen to do it again. Over the years, Cafferty and company have jammed on stage with many of the greats of rock and roll, including Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Dion, and opened on tour with the Beach Boys, Foreigner, and Bryan Adams. Starting May 28th, Cafferty joins Rick Springfield on his "I Want My 80s Tour" for selected dates, along with John Waite and Wang Chung."The 'Sound of Waves' album is a celebration of a lifetime legacy as musicians and 50+ years as a band. The songs are newly written with a respectful reflection of colors from an era of music's diverse history and the precious life moments and loving relationships that have served as our hearts' inspiration," said Cafferty. The title track from the group's 1985 album, "Tough All Over" became their second # 1 on the Billboard Rock Charts and the song "C-I-T-Y" reached the Billboard Top 20. Over the years, John has placed 35 songs in major motion pictures. They included Sylvester Stallone's "Rocky "IV," and "Cobra." The Farrelly Brothers hit films "There's Something About Mary" and "Dumb and Dumber Too," & Eddie and the Cruisers I and II. The lead single from the group's upcoming album is "Day In the Sun," which was spotlighted in Peter Farrelly's film "Rick Stanicky." Here's a video link of a live performance: Https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1xHCR8BDus All songs on the new release were written by Cafferty. Welcome back to The Video Store Podcast. This week, I've curated a lineup of films that capture different aspects of Los Angeles: its humor, its struggles, its danger, and its intrigue. Whether you're a longtime fan of these movies or discovering them for the first time, I think they're worth your time. Here's what we're watching this week:L.A. Story (1991)Steve Martin stars in and wrote this quirky romantic comedy that doubles as a love letter to Los Angeles. It's full of surreal humor, like talking freeway signs, and it pokes fun at the city's obsession with image and trends. But it's also heartfelt, exploring how we connect with others in a place that can feel isolating. Keep an eye out for some great cameos, including Patrick Stewart as a hilariously serious maître d'. The film was shot all around L.A., including Griffith Park and Venice Beach, which really adds to its sense of place.Born in East L.A. (1987)Cheech Marin wrote, directed, and stars in this comedy about a Mexican-American man who gets mistakenly deported to Mexico. It's packed with laughs, but it also has a lot of heart as it explores cultural misunderstandings. Make sure to check out Paul Rodriguez and Daniel Stern both have memorable roles here, adding to the film's charm. To Live and Die in L.A. (1985)If you're into crime thrillers, this one's a must. Directed by William Friedkin (The Exorcist, The French Connection), it's a gritty and intense look at the darker side of Los Angeles. The film follows a Secret Service agent, played by William Petersen, as he becomes obsessed with catching a counterfeiter (Willem Dafoe). Friedkin's commitment to authenticity shows, especially in the car chases, which are some of the best ever put on film. The movie also features an amazing soundtrack by Wang Chung, which perfectly complements its tense, stylish vibe.L.A. Confidential (1997)Curtis Hanson's neo-noir is a masterpiece. Set in the 1950s, it dives into corruption, scandal, and ambition within the LAPD. The ensemble cast, including Kevin Spacey, Guy Pearce, Kim Basinger, and Russell Crowe, delivers some of their best work. Basinger even won an Oscar for her performance. The screenplay, co-written by Hanson and Brian Helgeland, is a brilliant adaptation of James Ellroy's novel. The production design and costumes perfectly recreate the glamour and grit of post-war Los Angeles, making it as visually striking as it is narratively gripping. That's the lineup for this week. Each of these films captures something unique about Los Angeles, from its humor and charm to its danger and complexity. If you decide to check out any of these, let me know what you think. Thanks for stopping by The Video Store Podcast, and we'll see you next time with more movies to add to your watchlist. This is a public episode. By the late 70s, drummer Dony Wynn thought his music career might be over. Nothing was really happening and he wasn't holding down gigs. Then the great Robert Palmer heard him and everything changed. Dony joined the fray around the Secrets album in 1979 and stuck around for the next 15 years or so. Dony joins us this week to tell us what it's like working for Robert during his peak (and post peak) period, why they had that magic and his times working with Robert Plant, Steve Winwood, Wang Chung, Dr. John, Josie Cotton and more. These days, Dony is more focused on writing and photography, but he can sure tell a good story! Enjoy! www.donywynn.com www.patreon.com/c/thehustlepod
In this episode, I analyze the 1985 neo-noir action thriller "To Live and Die in L.A." with Ryan and Este from Altmania. We discuss the film's themes of crime and corruption within the socio-political context of 1980s America, highlighting performances by William Petersen and Willem Dafoe. We explore the film's critique of wealth disparities, unique cinematography by Robbie Müller, and Wang Chung's influential soundtrack. Key scenes and character arcs, especially Petersen's moral ambiguity, are examined. Finally, we reflect on the film's alternate ending and its impact, celebrating its cult classic status and inviting listeners to join us in further cinematic discussions.Altmania:https://pod.link/1702836067https://linktr.ee/altmaniahttps://www.patreon.com/altmaniahttps://x.com/altmaniapodhttps://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1b2dk-v8XUCOZHH7v63u0UtfF-bF9_E_XH_PDjeff5ro/edit?gid=0#gid=0Left of the Projector Linkshttps://www.patreon.com/LeftoftheProjectorPodhttps://boxd.it/5T9O1https://leftoftheprojector.comhttps://instagram.com/leftoftheprojectorhttp://tiktok.com/@leftoftheprojectorpodhttps://www.threads.net/@leftoftheprojector

This week on The Metro, Rev. Jeff Ivins brings you another episode with music from the 1980s featuring: Kirsty MacColl, George Michael, Wang Chung, The Knack, Nu Shooz, Julie Brown, Big Country, Greg Kihn, Blondie, Haircut 100, Quarterflash, The Romantics, Killing Joke, and Debbie Gibson.
There were few rock albums in the 80's which achieved the popularity levels of Born In the U.S.A., the seventh studio album by Bruce Springsteen. Songs for this album were recorded with the E. Street Band over a two-year period from 1982 until 1984, the totality of songs far outstripping the available space on the album. Somewhere between 70 and 90 songs were created during those sessions, some being released as B-sides Ultimately twelve songs landed on the album, seven of which were released as singles. All seven singles reached the top 10 in the United States. The songs reflect Springsteen's blue collar sensibilities, but also have more pop influence musically than some of his earlier works. Springsteen made more prominent use of synthesizers in these pieces, and the shorter, more radio-friendly tracks surely contributed to the success of the album. “Born In the U.S.A.” was the biggest selling album of 1985, and remains Springsteen's most successful studio album. The album's success also catapulted Bruce Springsteen's fame to stratospheric levels, a consequence which he considered a mixed blessing. While the music is pop oriented and lively, the lyrics are often darker, reflecting the aftermath of the Vietnam war and struggles of blue collar life. It may be a strange juxtaposition, but it worked.Born In the U.S.A. was released in 1984, but singles from the album were still being released in 1985, the last of which was released in November.Lynch brings us this monster album of 80's heartland rock in this week's podcast Glory DaysThe fifth single released from the album was inspired by an encounter Springsteen had with an old friend and star high school baseball player in a bar in 1973. It reflects on the passage of time and the way we look back on the days of our youth with nostalgia. Dancing In the DarkThis track was born out of frustration. Springsteen's manager was pushing for him to write a hit single, and the lyrics reflect the pressire Springsteen felt to write a hit. Interestingly the song became Springsteen's biggest hit, reaching number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The video is famous for a scene where Springsteen pulls a fan - the actress Courtney Cox before her fame on the TV show “Friends” - on stage to dance. I'm On FireSpringsteen developed this song in early 1982 while experimenting with a slow Johnny Cash rhythm. The lyrics are built around sexual tension for a seemingly unavailable love. The video portrays Springsteen as an auto mechanic working on a Thunderbird for an unseen female who brings the car in frequently and always asks for him to do the work.Born In the U.S.A.The title track and opening song to the album is a protest song disguised as a patriotic song. It was inspired by Ron Kovic, a Vietnam War veteran and wheelchair-bound anti-war activist who wrote the memoir “Born on the Fourth of July.” Despite its protest origins, it became associated with Ronald Reagan's optimistic 1984 campaign due to its strong chorus. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Living In America by James Brown (from the motion picture “Rocky IV”)Brown makes a cameo in this Rocky movie when Balboa's antagonist turned friend Apollo Creed fights an exhibition against Soviet athlete Ivan Drogo in Las Vegas. STAFF PICKS:She Sells Sanctuary by the CultWayne gets the staff picks rolling with the first big hit from the Cult. The lyrics reflect the feeling of safety that the singer receives when being around a particular woman. Front man Ian Astbury has stated that "...plain and simple. It's about sex." This group channels a bit of goth rock and a bit of fuzzy psychedelia. To Live and Die in L.A. by Wang ChungRob brings us a deeper cut from the film noir "To Live and Die in L.A." Director William Friedkin liked the group and asked them to compose the entire soundtrack. This piece is the title track for the soundtrack, and gives off the neo-noir feel of the thriller.Overjoyed by Stevie WonderBruce features a hit song of the twentieth studio album from Stevie Wonder, "In Squared Circle." The song was written back in 1979 for the album "Journey Through the Secret Life of Plants," but didn't make that album. It was first performed live on Saturday Night Live in 1983. Jazz guitarist Earl Klugh contributes on this song. Running Up that Hill (A Deal with God) by Kate BushLynch finishes the staff picks with a song that got new life from the series "Stranger Things." Bush's unusual lyrics reflect a desire to make a deal with God to trade places with her husband for a time so she would better understand him. Founder of Wang Chung, musician Nick Feldman sits down with Frank Mackay on this episode of The Frank Mackay Show!
Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay sit down to create a gorgeous piece of art before setting it on fire as they talk 'To Live and Die in L.A.' Andy talks about the time he had a run-in with the real Secret Service, and how seeing this film made him know they were working on a counterfeiting beef. Then the fellas talk about one of the greatest films of the '80s that has aged wonderfully as being very of its time. Filled with inept cops who are crappy at their jobs because they're too preoccupied with showing bravado, William Friedkin's crime masterpiece features a jaw-dropping airport foot chase, and one of the most mesmerizing (and terrifying) car chase scenes caught on camera. Perhaps the most thrilling element is how captivatingly erotic it all is with Willem Dafoe at his most sexily angular, and William Peterson slanging swagger as if he's got a 12 inch schlong. All of this is tied together with a synthy score by Wang Chung of all artists. Both this episode and film are guaranteed to leave you hot and bothered.

567 - Wang Chung - Everybody Have Fun Tonight: Chris, Nick, and Andy break down "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" from the 1986 album Mosaic by Wang Chung.
Time to wrap up our New Wave Game and see if anyone survives! We're down to the final three volumes of the CD series Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Hits of the 80s, and either Kevin or Kornflake could still win. (But come on, our money is on Kornflake...) And we've reached the mid-80s, when there was no shortage of new wave hits in the Top 40. So we're talking about acts like Wang Chung, Thompson Twins, Katrina and the Waves, Animotion, Tears for Fears, Bananarama, and Men at Work. It seemed like nothing was off limits on the pop charts. A musical about chess? Sure. Vietnam-era news clips set to a dance beat? Absolutely. The Dream Academy had a hit that sounded like nothing else. Arcadia had a hit that sounded exactly like Duran Duran, and with good reason. There's even a trio of New England-area new wave bands represented here. (We all know 'Til Tuesday, but do you remember Miracle Legion? How about Rubber Rodeo?) So enjoy one last round of new wave madness, and then we can relax. Just like Frankie said. Noel catches up with Andres del Castillo, who was the lead singer of the Canadian band, Eight Seconds. The synthpop/progressive rock group is best known for their 1986 hit, "Kiss You (When It's Dangerous)." It reached #14 overall in the Canadian charts, #1 in Quebec, and #72 in the United States. The band toured with Wang Chung in support of their amazing debut album, Almacantar. The album was produced by Rupert Hine, who produced The Fixx, Howard Jones and Tina Turner. Record company issues delayed the release of their second album, Big Houses, by two years. When it was released in 1990, the landscape had changed and the album came and went. The band broke up soon afterwards.
