As a yoga teacher, I've come across a few practitioners who don't always realize yoga is from India. Many of these students are from the United States, and they inspired me to investigate and uncover why there is a disconnect between western yogis and the culture of their practice. Sri, a yoga student who has been practicing with us on OmStars, joins me to discuss the Hinduphobia he's witnessed in the United States and how it impacts our yoga practice. Sri graduated with a Master's degree in information systems but still experienced prejudice on campus. Mistranslations, colonialism, and cultural differences between how eastern and western students interpret yoga feed into the Hinduphobia. We take a deep dive into how Westerners look at the caste system. The individualism we have here in America makes us believe that we do not have castes, but we still operate under a social system that organizes us by job, skill set, experience, and even wealth. And this idea influences how we look at the culture and history of our yoga practice. It's very important for yoga teachers and students in the west to learn more about the culture and history of our practice. It is a complex system that goes beyond the poses we practice on the mat. The yoga journey is one of spiritual and personal growth -- one of the best ways to grow is by empowering yourself to learn. Sri recommends finding a guru or yoga teacher who is culturally rooted in the yoga practice. You want to go beyond just reading and studying. You want to feel the practice, and a yoga teacher who is a master of the philosophy will help you on this journey. Start the journey now with your free 30-day membership on Omstars.com. Hey Scholars! I am super excited about this episode because this is one of my favorite topics. Today I am joined by Dr. Shannon Beth Wanless. Dr. Wanless is an associate professor and the director of The Office of Child Development in the University of Pittsburgh School of Education. Her current work is on social justice and equity (SJ&E). She explores ways that children, preservice teachers, and organizational leaders develop SJ&E skills and how to create classroom, school, and organizational climates that reflect SJ&E tenets.Join us as we discuss how SJ&E play a role in every social-emotional experience yet the majority of research and practice still takes a colorblind approach. The good news is that we see promising signs that the SEL and social justice fields are getting acquainted but we can all do better than we are doing right now. Let's commit to set aside time and make safe spaces to grapple with your colleagues about ways we can strengthen the equity gaps in the SEL field and to raise a generation of students and teachers that are prepared to use their SEL skills to fight for social justice. Today we are joined with Joshua Stoddard who I met at one of his sound baths at Yoga Roots here in Petoskey Michigan. Joshua is currently on a permanent tour spreading his healing energy through sound. I was super excited to get Joshua on the show today because he has a lot to offer. His experience in the music industry has allowed him to work with a variety of bands in a number of different formats. Some of which you may know with bands like The Strokes, Regina Spektor, Sun Kill Moon and Fountains of Wayne. And while Joshua was working in Artist Relations for Gibson in Manhattan he found himself with this dream job, but that he was still living for the weekends. Still driving for something more fulfilling. In this episode, we talk about how it feels to hit rock bottom. We explore his healing journey and talk about one of Joshua’s first experiences with sound baths which reconnected with his mother that had previously passed away. There are a lot of gems throughout this conversation and so stick around and I’m sure you’ll be glad you did. She also serves as a Lululemon Ambassador. And now for the surprise! Sindy is an employment lawyer with her own consulting business, Warren & Associates LLC. In today’s episode, I speak to Trina Morris. Trina wears many hats. I knew her first as a yoga teacher who studied at ISHTA, but before that, she studied public relations in school and had a career with major fashion brands. Over the past decade, she transitioned to being a self-employed consultant, professor, and coach with her company Style Root. Her project Breathe Bro brings yoga to black men. In today’s podcast, we get to talk about yoga, business, and racial tension in America. I begin with a report from a Reuter’s article about the latest news regarding the NFL protest begun by Colin Kaepernick. I mention Kaepernick's foundation, which has given nearly a million dollars to support social justice. We talk about ISHTA Yoga. I also mention Julia von Winterfeldt of SOULWORX, who has appeared on this podcast.
