Dr. Catherine Booth joined HM Prison and Probation Service in 1997. During her career she has worked with men, women and children in custody and currently works in HMPPS North West Psychology Services. Cath has been involved in the management of serious incidents in prisons for over 20 years as a practitioner and trainer. She acts as a Silver and Gold negotiation advisor (NA) and is involved in training prison officers and psychologists to become negotiators and negotiation advisors, respectively. Cath completed her doctoral research in exploring the experiences of prison officer negotiators. Dr. Carol Bond has been a forensic psychologist for over 30 years, spending most of her career working in prisons as well as practicing in secure psychiatric hospitals, working as a specialist member of the parole board and lecturing in academic settings. Throughout her career she has been involved in the management of serious incidents including training staff, advising negotiators and commanders during incidents, developing specialist training courses and working with other professionals involved in crisis management. An Ohio woman, charged with her mother's murder and felonious assault on police officers, appeared distraught during her first court appearance last week. 23-year-old Anna Millette broke down during a bond hearing. Millette is accused of pinning her mother against a garage wall earlier this month, leading to her mother's death and injuries to two responding officers. Bodycam footage released by the Miami Township Police Department shows officers attempting to help Millette out of her vehicle before she sped off, injuring the officers. The video captures the officers shouting, "Stop! Stop! Stop! Get out of the car!" as Millette reversed, sending one officer to the ground and allegedly striking another. Prosecutors secured a high bond after revealing Millette's past incident of using a vehicle as a deadly weapon. Her bond was set at $5 million, with prosecutors arguing for a high amount due to her "demonstrated pattern of violent behavior" and the "likelihood that she will return to court is low given her numerous attempts to flee." Millette's defense lawyer claimed during the hearing that she is pregnant with her first child. On June 15, Miami Township Police responded to a domestic situation between Millette and her mother, Joyce Millette. Police stated, "The daughter used a vehicle to pin the mother against the garage wall. As officers arrived, trying to break out the vehicle windows to free the woman, the driver reversed and struck two officers." Authorities reported that Joyce Millette, 64, died from her injuries. They released the footage to show "the danger the officers were involved in." Prosecutors also presented additional video evidence showing Anna Millette "charging her vehicle through the yard, backing up and charging again at least three times." On the final charge, she allegedly chased her mother into the garage, where she crashed into the walls, pinning her mother. Timothy Escobar, her boyfriend, revealed that Millette had been battling mental health issues for several years. He recounted a previous incident where she hit him with a car two years ago, for which she served over a year in jail before being released on probation in July 2023. “She wasn't herself, really,” Escobar said. “I didn't take it to heart. I had to get some stitches on my face and that's about it. They stitched me up real good.” Escobar mentioned that her mother had tried admitting her to a mental hospital but they eventually stopped accepting her. Associations of cannabis use, use frequency, and cannabis use disorder with violent behavior among young adults in the United States International Journal of Drug Policy An association between cannabis use and violent behavior has previously been reported, so the authors used the 2015-2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health to better explore this association. In adjusted models, the authors found an increased prevalence of violent behavior among males reporting daily cannabis use with and without cannabis use disorder (CUD) versus no cannabis use. However, there was no increase among males reporting non-daily cannabis use with or without CUD. Researchers found an increase in violent behavior among females reporting non-daily use with or without CUD and daily use with or without CUD. Julia Mahfouz is an assistant professor in the Leadership for Educational Organizations program, School of Education and Human Development at the University of Colorado-Denver. She has a Ph.D. from the Pennsylvania State University in Educational Leadership with minors in Comparative International Education and Curriculum & Instruction. Her research agenda has been shaped by her educational work as an international educator in the capacity of a high school teacher, department chair, principal (K-12), and curriculum director.Her research explores the social, emotional, and cultural dynamics of urban and rural educational settings and their effects on school climate and school improvement utilizing qualitative and mixed methodologies. Her work seeks to deepen our understanding of social-emotional learning (SEL) through lenses of intervention implementation, school improvement efforts, and preparation of school leaders to create spaces equitable for all where all could flourish utilizing policy as a lever for change and as a powerful context that shapes education at multiple levels of the system. Her research has been published in journals such as Journal of Educational Administration, Educational Management Administration and Leadership, International Journal of Leadership in Education, Education and Urban Society, Mindfulness, College Student Affairs Journal, and in practitioner outlets such as The Learning Professional and Education Canada.In 2019, she received the Don Willower Award of Excellence for her significant scholarly achievement in Educational Leadership. She is the former director of Open Circle, a program with the Wellesley centers for women at Wellesley College. Kamilah's passion for social justice and the social and emotional well-being of children has fueled her vision for advocating for and educating others about the inextricable connections between social and emotional learning and equity. Kamilah is also a trained leader with the National seed project, where she has led cohorts of colleagues, educators, and parents through a year-long, intense community building across difference via storytelling conversation, and teaching around topics of diversity, equity, and social justice. Our guest today is Christina Cipriano, Ph.D. Dr. Cipriano holds a dual appointment at the Yale School of Medicine as Assistant Professor of Applied Developmental and Educational Psychology at the Yale Child Study Center and Director of Research at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence (YCEI). Dr. Cipriano’s research focuses on the systematic examination of social and emotional learning (SEL) in the promotion of pathways to optimal developmental outcomes for traditionally marginalized student and teacher populations. Dr. Cipriano has extensive experience working in classrooms and schools, providing training to teachers and support staff, and direct instruction to students. As the Director of Research at the YCEI, Dr. Cipriano oversees, designs, and maintains large-scale basic and applied research studies on: emotions, emotional intelligence, and social and emotional learning, including longitudinal studies and randomized controlled trials. Dr. Cipriano has a wealth of project management experience as the PI and Director of numerous major grants supporting the development and validation of SEL assessments, classroom observation practices, and SEL evaluation and efficacy trials. Dr. Cipriano received her Ph.D. in Applied Developmental and Educational Psychology from Boston College, her Ed.M. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and undergraduate degree from Hofstra University. Dr. Cipriano is a Jack Kent Cooke Scholar and the mother of four beautiful children who inspire her every day to take the moon and make it shine for everyone. You are in for a treat with today’s guest Mr. David Adams. David is the Senior Director of Strategy at The Urban Assembly. He previously served as the Director of Social-Emotional Learning at the Urban Assembly, and prior to that was the Social-Emotional Learning Coordinator for District 75 where he shaped the District's approach to social-emotional learning for students with severe cognitive and behavioral challenges. He has worked internationally in schools in England, setting up and evaluating positive behavioral support and social-emotional learning programs as a research intern at Yale University’s Health, Emotion, and Behavior Lab. His work on the relationship of social-emotional competence and student academic and behavioral outcomes is published in multiple academic journals. David is also co-author of a new book, The Educator's Practical Guide to Emotional Intelligence , which was published in 2020. He is married with two children, serves on the Board of Directors of CASEL, and is a Civil Affairs Officer in the Army Reserve. David holds an M.Ed in Educational Psychology from Fordham University. Cultivating a night time routine is an amazing practice that better supports our mental health. This is a great way to give yourself the gift of ease with your morning tasks. However, an effective night time routine has to have a proper foundation. When building your nighttime routine, ask yourself: How do I want to feel in the mornings? Once you’ve answered this question, then you can establish  habits to support your goals. Your ideal nighttime routine will be unique to you, so personalize your night time routine with activities and habits you find relaxing and helpful. For me a night time routine is vital because I value waking up at 5:30 am to practice my self care routine of exercising, planning my day and spending time with myself. Jacqui Oh is a career teacher, student and vocalist who loves to ask questions, from dumb to inappropriate and often introspective.  Jacqui likes to have fun. She is passionate about education, diversity and culture.  All of those areas are addressed on her podcast, StartDis.  She is also a victim turned thriver of domestic abuse.  Her story in this interview is openly shared with heart-felt honesty and emotion. While Jacqui’s abusive relationship did not last many years, the trauma was tremendous.  They were young: late teens, early 20s.  They dated off and on for a couple of years. Controlling behavior led to threats of suicide and murder. Still she moved in with him, believing he would not be physically violent toward her. She was wrong. Lara Stemple and her colleagues are leading the charge to change perceptions of sexual victimization and more accurately account for the gender of sexual perpetrators. Stemple is the director of Graduate Studies at the UCLA School of Law and is the director of the Health and Human Rights Law Project. Two recent studies have blazed the way. The first was published in April of 2014. It was co-written by Stemple and Ilan Meyer. “The Sexual Victimization of Men in American: New Data Challenge Old Assumptions” was published in the American Journal of Public Health. When assessing five different federal surveys from 2010 to 2012, the research team concluded that sexual victimization of men in America was about equal to the prevalence found with women. This first research work also showed women are perpetrators at much higher rates than commonly believed. That finding was the foundation for a second research work for the peer reviewed journal Aggression and Violent Behavior. “Sexual Victimization Perpetrated by Women: Federal Data Reveal a Surprising Prevalence” by Stemple, Meyer and Andrew Flores was just released. It records a high degree of sexual abuse and sexual victimization perpetuated by women on both boys and men. This cuts against the stereotypes of women as being “nurturing, submissive helpmate to men.” The researchers say: “The idea that women can be sexually manipulative, dominant, and even violent runs counter to these stereotypes. Yet, studies have documented female-perpetrated acts that span a wide spectrum of sexual abuse.” Historically, female perpetration has been minimized even among mental health and social work professionals. However, evidence shows that young boys abused by women are more reluctant to disclose their victimization by women than by men. Often sexual abuse by women is mischaracterized as a “rite of passage” for the male and benign when, to the contrary, it is actually sexual abuse and produces long-term damage in the male. This is especially true if the female perpetrator is the mother of her victim.

But as I did a search of the literature I found that domestic violence is depressingly common and more children are exposed to it than we would like.
