This month we are delighted to be in conversation with Thomas Reuter, a Professor at the Asia Institute of The University of Melbourne. His research focuses on transformative social change, food systems, and transitions to sustainability in Asia and beyond. He is on the board of the World Academy (WAAS) and serves as the Chair of the Existential Threats and Risks to All InfoHub (EXTRA). In this conversation we learned about Thomas' academic development and how he got interested in extractivism as a concept. Thomas has worked extensively in Indonesia, especially looking at the food systems and the devastating effects of plantation agriculture. Thomas gives us some insight into the enduring colonial legacy in modern extractivist ventures. We started the conversation learning about the changes in Indonesia over the past several decades, from the dominance of subsistence agriculture to “modern” monocultural agriculture. The knock-on effects from this “development” extend to land use, health, labor relations, and the rise of cash economies, among many others. We discussed the role of consumption and our societal values and their environmental impact. Join us for this wide-ranging and insightful conversation!! Want to learn more about Thomas's academic work and engagement? See: His ResearchGate Profile and His LinkedIn Want to learn more about his work at the World Academy? Sometimes, it feels like we don't deserve to do these shows. This week, Apocalypse Duds Super Fan, Earnest Politico, Big Parking Lot Hater, 40s French Glasses Enthusiast, Astoundingly Thoughtful Genius, Kind, Pragmatic Operator, John T. Reuter. I don't want to spoil it, but we covered much uncharted territory on this show about love, circumstance, and forgiveness. You really must listen. For a show requiring no prep,John was one of our most prepared ever. Maybe half the time, we share the show outline before the show, but not this time. We remained electrically on the rails, ever closer to the show's mission, if there is one.

Building HVAC Science - Building Performance, Science, Health & Comfort
Quotes from the episode: "Better isn't a goal, it's a direction." "HVAC can feel like a house of mirrors for homeowners, and the cure is transparency plus measured results." "We're not trying to find the perfect contractor. We're trying to find the contractor who keeps learning and won't get complacent." In this episode of the Building HVAC Science Podcast, Eric Kaiser flips the script and brings Bill Spohn on as a guest alongside Kevin Hart from Better HVAC and Darren Reuter and Huff Hoffmaster from Rewiring America. The group lays out a shared problem: homeowners face a significant information disadvantage when buying HVAC, often making a five-figure decision with no easy way to verify quality beyond marketing, promises, or price. That gap leads to mistrust, inconsistent outcomes, and too many "box swaps" that miss sizing, duct performance, commissioning, and homeowner education. Better HVAC exists to tip the odds back toward the homeowner by connecting people to contractors and individuals who commit to doing measured, commissioned work, and by aggregating trusted educational resources in one place. Rewiring America adds the consumer education and electrification planning layer, plus a push to scale adoption responsibly, with real contractor standards behind it. The partnership ties those strengths together: instead of building separate directories, they align on a shared pledge and a badging approach that helps homeowners and peers filter for contractors who are trained, insured, licensed, and willing to follow best practices, especially for heat pumps and whole-home electrification journeys that also include weatherization and energy auditing. fWotD Episode 3010: SMS Hindenburg Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Friday, 1 August 2025, is SMS Hindenburg.SMS Hindenburg was a battlecruiser of the German Kaiserliche Marine (Imperial Navy), the third ship of the Derfflinger class, built to a slightly modified design. She carried the same battery of eight 30.5 cm (12 in) guns, but in improved turrets that allowed them to fire further. The ship was also slightly larger and faster than her two sister ships. She was named in honor of Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg, the victor of the Battle of Tannenberg and the Battle of the Masurian Lakes, as well as the supreme commander of the German armies from 1916. Construction of the ship was slowed after the start of World War I by shortages of material and manpower, the need to repair damaged ships, and shifting priorities. As a result, Hindenburg was the last capital ship of any type built for the German navy during the war.Hindenburg was commissioned late in the war and as a result had a brief service career. The ship took part in a handful of short fleet operations as the flagship of I Scouting Group in 1917–1918, though saw no major action with British forces. The proposed final sortie of the fleet in the last weeks of the war came to nothing when the crews of the capital ships mutinied. Following Germany's defeat in November 1918, Hindenburg was interned with the rest of the German battlecruisers at Scapa Flow in November 1918. Rear Admiral Ludwig von Reuter ordered the ships be scuttled on 21 June 1919, and Hindenburg was the last of the ships to sink. She was raised in 1930 and broken up for scrap over the following two years. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:52 UTC on Friday, 1 August 2025.For the full current version of the article, see SMS Hindenburg on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Joanna.

In this sweeping episode, Matt Ehret and Ghost are joined by Cynthia Chung (cynthiachung.substack.com) for a masterclass on Iran's modern history. Cynthia walks through her trilogy of essays chronicling how Britain and later the United States engineered regime change to control Iranian oil, beginning with the 1872 Reuter concession that handed Britain the country's economic lifeblood. The conversation traces the 1953 CIA-MI6 coup against Prime Minister Mossadegh for nationalizing oil, the Shah's ambitions to industrialize and escape colonial dependence, and the suspicious rise of Khomeini's revolution. The hosts expose how the same Western networks behind the overthrow of Mossadegh later fueled the Iran-Iraq war, Iran-Contra, and decades of chaos designed to prevent regional cooperation and modernization. They explore the Carter Doctrine, Brzezinski's arc of crisis, and how strategies used to fracture Iran are still deployed across the world. The episode closes with reflections on Iran's attempts to reclaim sovereignty through the Belt and Road Initiative and a vision of economic development to transcend engineered conflicts. Rich with historical detail, this conversation challenges the simplistic narratives that have shaped public perception for generations.

President Donald Trump wants Michigan automobile manufacturers to move entire supply chains to the U.S. And he’s put steep tariffs on the automotive industry in an attempt to spur that change. But many of these manufacturers are taking a wait-and-see approach because of the administration's constantly changing policies, and the cost associated with moving production. After President Donald Trump’s 25% automotive import tariffs went into effect April 3, a report from Reuter estimated auto sales could decline by two million. The Wall Street Journal reports it’s the latest news in what’s been a chaotic time at the Pentagon. The Supreme Court over the weekend issued a rare overnight ruling barring the Trump administration from deporting migrants in Texas under the Alien Enemies Act. NBC News reports it happened as bus loads of deportees were headed to an airport for removal. Plus, Google's latest antitrust case, Israel releases its review on the killing of 15 emergency responders in Gaza, and it’s been 50 years since the first wheelchair competitor completed the Boston Marathon.

In this episode we're talking to Sara-Beth Reuter about her inspiring journey to home birth. Sara-Beth is a great example of courage and determination. After her doctor told her that she would not be able to deliver naturally and would need a c-section because of the size of her baby, she and her husband Matthew decided to get another opinion on the matter. They reached out to Matthew's grandmother, an experienced midwife, and explored their options. Already not too keen on hospitals and clear that she wanted a natural birth, at 19 years old and 31 weeks pregnant, Sara-Beth switched over to the midwifery model of care and planned for a home birth with the help of Matthew's grandmother. Sara-Beth has a solid sense of confidence in her body's ability to do what it's meant to do, and it comes across when she talks about the rest of her pregnancy and her birth. Sarah-Beth believes that “labor is not a sickness,” and is all about putting empowering information out there to support women in having a home birth if that's what they want for themselves and their families. We're so grateful to her for sharing her time with us, especially with 2-month old baby Silas in the picture. We understand how valuable time is for a new mama!
