My guest today is Eric Rice – back for his second appearance on the podcast.When we first spoke, he was running one of the only public equity funds in the impact space available to retail investors. Now, that fund has been shut down, the capital returned, and Eric has moved to private equity – specifically, to SEAF, an investor in emerging market SMEs.This time, we talked about what happened, why it happened, and what it says about the current state of impact.Eric's core thesis hasn't changed. The theory of change he developed at Wellington and BlackRock was simple: invest in companies doing socially useful work – even if they don't realize it yet – and help them grow into that identity.This was never ESG, and Eric is clear on the difference. ESG, he says, is about how a company operates. Impact is about what it does. “We weren't ESG investors by any means. We were thematic investors – we only invested in companies solving social or environmental problems.”That distinction got lost. Once the political backlash against ESG took hold, especially in the U.S., nuance didn't matter.Texas and a group of red states targeted a handful of BlackRock funds they deemed “too woke” to qualify for state investment. Among the six funds flagged, three were ones Eric had led. The result was that legitimate impact strategies became collateral damage in a culture war that had little to do with what those funds were actually doing.As Eric puts it, they were “a different animal from the beginning”, but their message got hijacked.After that, the pivot to private markets wasn't just strategic – it was necessary.At SEAF (Small Enterprise Assistance Funds), Eric is focused on small enterprises in emerging Europe, particularly in agriculture and food. Why? Because productivity in that sector is 40% of Western Europe's – and no one has modernized it.Eric and I talked about the limits of measurement frameworks, the role of trust in evaluating managers, and why so many funds labeled “impact” aren't actually doing anything different.This conversation is about what happens when a theory of change collides with political reality. It's about staying true to the work in an industry that often prioritizes marketing. Hyundai ha anunciado el lanzamiento de Pleos, su nueva marca de software de movilidad, durante la conferencia ‘Pleos 25' celebrada en Seúl. Esta plataforma está diseñada para gestionar de forma autónoma dispositivos en movimiento y conectar vehículos, infraestructuras y servicios en la nube. Pleos se posiciona como un ecosistema integral que integra chips de alto rendimiento, sistema operativo, infoentretenimiento (Pleos Connect), análisis de datos y gestión de flotas, ofreciendo funciones como conducción autónoma, conectividad avanzada y planificación inteligente de rutas para mejorar la eficiencia en el transporte urbano y la logística. En el plano internacional, Hyundai ha impulsado la creación de la alianza público-privada Next Urban Mobility Alliance (NUMA), con la que busca transformar la movilidad urbana abordando retos como la sostenibilidad, la despoblación regional y los derechos de movilidad. Esta colaboración se estructura en torno a tres ejes: libertad de movimiento, vehículos autónomos y aplicaciones a bordo. Juan Carlos Toribio, experto en Seguridad Vial de IMU detalla los incumplimientos normativos que tiene la carretera en la que fallecieron 4 jóvenes en 2025 al precipitarse su coche por un barranco. Analizamos el accidente de Cantabria en la CA 643. En la noche del 15 de marzo del año 2025 un vehículo con cuatro jóvenes se precipitaba por el barranco y bajaba hasta 300 metros de diferencia de cota aproximadamente. Los cuatro ocupantes del vehículo, entre 21 y 20 años, fallecieron en este siniestro. No es algo casual, estamos ante un siniestro porque es algo causal de causas y hay varias causas que concurren, unas que afectan a la seguridad activa y otras que afectan a la seguridad pasiva. “Os puedo decir que la Administración Pública le ha hecho un regalo a unos padres, que es el fallecimiento de sus hijos y en esa Administración Pública hay funcionarios públicos responsables y el incumplimiento de la normativa técnica reguladora en materia de seguridad para esa carretera data de los años 60” Llega nuestra Constitución en 1978, las normas siguen evolucionando adaptándose a nuestros tiempos y a fecha actual de 2025 se sigue infringiendo la normativa técnica. Cuando se hable de la normativa técnica tenéis que tener en cuenta que está vinculada al reglamento general de circulación y a la ley de seguridad vial a través del artículo 57 que nos está diciendo que hay que mantener la vía en las mejores condiciones posibles de seguridad y en el artículo 139 del reglamento general de circulación que le está diciendo al titular de la vía que hay que mantener la vía en las mejores condiciones posibles de seguridad. Tanto la ley de seguridad vial como el reglamento general de circulación obligan al titular de la vía a cumplir con lo que se dice en ese reglamento general de circulación y en esa ley de seguridad vial y lo hace al principio del todo no tenéis que leer mucho lo dice en el artículo 1.2 y en el artículo 2 “Entendemos que puede haber un ilícito penal al tipo penal 2 del 385 del Código Penal porque teniendo la obligación de restituir la seguridad vial no se ha hecho y no se ha hecho desde hace más de 60 años si estuviéramos hablando de la infraestructura del firme, del propio firme, de la anchura funcional estaríamos hablando de 1964, si estuviéramos hablando de normativa de señalización del 62, si estuviéramos hablando de normativa técnica en lo relativo a sistemas de contención estaríamos hablando de la orden circular 229 del año 1971 y estáis viendo que todo esto es preconstitucional” Nuestra constitución en su artículo del año 1978 está, la última, en su artículo 9 está diciendo que la Administración Pública tiene la obligación de obedecer el ordenamiento jurídico. También los ciudadanos tenemos la obligación de obedecer el ordenamiento jurídico. El artículo 17 de la Constitución nos está diciendo que se debe de garantizar nuestra seguridad dentro de ese gran paquete de la seguridad está una parcela, una indiscutible parcela, que es la seguridad vial. Hemos advertido muchas veces de los sistemas de contención que son ilegales, que no se ponen sistemas de contención, hemos advertido de varias cosas pero también en el año 2017 que la anchura funcional de las carreteras es insuficiente, insuficiente para que se crucen dos vehículos con seguridad, insuficiente para evitar las salidas de vía, insuficiente y un largo etcétera. La carretera de este puerto de montaña tiene una anchura funcional de 4,10 metros, acordaros que, según reza la norma, la marca vial de fin de calzada no se incluye en calzada, por lo tanto, se excluye de la calzada y si tiene 15 centímetros, esos 15 centímetros de esa marca vial o 10 se quitan y esos 15 o 10 también se quitan del otro lado. La anchura funcional real de la calzada era de 4,10 metros, no tenía arcén, estábamos en un plano descendente y además estamos en sentido decreciente. Puerto de montaña, oscuro, una carretera realmente oscura, sin elementos de balizamiento, con unas carencias enormes y sin sistema de contención. Al principio de la carretera hay un panel que tardas ocho segundos en leer, imaginaros que vas con tu coche de noche hay una saturación cognitiva no te vas a enterar de nada salvo que te pares delante del panel y estés ocho segundos leyendo. Cuando terminas esos ocho segundos ya puedes continuar y lo vas entendiendo por el camino. El tiempo de respuesta reconocido en la norma técnica es de dos segundos. Esta carretera no tiene sistemas de contención por donde se precipitaron estos chicos y es obligatorio que exista. En algunos tramos existen una especie de mojones o guardacantones que datan del año 1930 1940 Luego hay unas varillas que son para medir la altura que puede tener la nieve en los laterales de ese puerto de montaña, al mismo tiempo se mantienen los antiguos lectores que son unos monolitos de hormigón que eso habría que quitarlos porque hablamos de la necesidad del despeje de márgenes desde el año 1971. Además de todo esto existe murete de obra, murete de obra que no cumple con ninguna de las normativas técnicas actual y desde hace años cualquier sistema de contención que se quiera poner en el escenario de la seguridad vial con la capacidad de absorber, redireccionar y proteger tiene que cumplir con la normativa europea EN 13 17. Lo relativo a las marcas viales la norma técnica es de 1987 esta norma técnica nos está hablando de cómo tienen que ser las marcas viales para que una carretera sea segura. Para garantizar la seguridad 1, 2 y que es importante para regular todo lo que es la circulación y además para orientar al conductor. La marca vial longitudinal de fin de calzada en este caso es discontinua y dice la norma técnica que las trazados curvos debe de ser continua y que sí que excepcionalmente podrá ser discontinua pero cuando no exista especial riesgo en la carretera. Aquí existe un especial riesgo en la carretera por lo tanto el balizamiento que conlleva el uso de la marca vial longitudinal continua de fin de calzada que aquí lo vemos omitido y es discontinua que además es deficiente. Teniendo en cuenta que había sal en la calzada, que había nieve, que había una serie de cosas, eso puede dificultar la percepción del conductor de ese elemento. La guía es tan importante que si hubiera sido continua y hubiera mantenido el nivel de reflexión adecuado hubiera sido un buen referente por parte del conductor. La carretera tiene una incidencia directa sobre la orientación de los conductores como consecuencia del desobedecimiento a la norma técnica 8.2 y que ello es una infracción al artículo 139 del reglamento general de circulación y 57 de la ley de seguridad vial. Por otro lado la marca vial longitudinal continua o discontinua que tendría que haber en el centro de la calzada no la tenemos. Esa ausencia de esa otra marca vial en el centro de la calzada también incide de forma directa en la orientación. La señalización vertical: saturación cognitiva - las señales tienen que estar separadas 50 metros unas de otras porque tiene que existir una interpretación de la señal, cómo tenemos que percibirla y que no podrá estar compartiendo una señal de peligro con una de ordenación. Tenemos muchas señales sobre un solo panel y esto genera una congestión cognitiva y lo que hace es bloquearte, al final hay parte del mensaje que no ha recibido y para colmo se atreven a poner un mensaje arriba que nos informa de que estamos en una zona medioambiental fantástica. El titular de la vía incumple la ley por lo tanto parte de ese mensaje pudo pasar desapercibido al conductor del vehículo sin ningún tipo de problema como consecuencia de incumplimiento de la norma técnica. Hay una reducción del gálibo. Otro incumplimiento de la norma técnica de señalización vertical puesto que el gálibo de toda la carretera, la anchura funcional de toda la carretera en este caso incumple tremendamente la norma de trazado de una proporción enorme pero es que además pone en peligro la seguridad del tráfico y es que además no existe señalización vertical alguna restricción de paso de vehículos de mayor categoría. ¿Esto qué quiere decir? Pues que podemos tener incluso otro tipo de siniestros ¿Por qué? Porque la anchura funcional es de 4,10 metros y hay que tener en cuenta lo que dicta el Real Decreto 2822 del año 98, reglamento general de vehículos que nos está diciendo que los vehículos de 2,55 incluso superestructuras de 2,60 pueden circular sin ningún tipo de autorización especial por ese tipo de vía por lo tanto no tienen que pedir permiso para circular por esa vía. ¿Cómo se cruza un camioncito de reparto con un autobús escolar o con un autobús? ¿Cómo se cruzan? ¿Se precipitan al vacío también porque encima no hay sistemas de contención? Tenemos la omisión de la señalización relativa a la anchura funcional. Si pasamos al tema del balizamiento: Vemos algún panel direccional, en alguna curva existe un solo panel direccional que será visible o no de noche habría que ver el poder de reflexión que tiene pero en la actualidad existe una deficiencia enorme por lo tanto una demanda enorme para el cumplimiento de la normativa técnica de garantizar la seguridad del tráfico en esa vía. La orden circular 309 del año 90 nos está hablando de los hitos de arista. Desde 1990 esta carretera no dispone del cumplimiento de esa norma técnica por la instalación de los hitos de arista y porque no dispone de esa colocación de los hitos de arista que además sería capaz de darnos la reflexión de orientación en determinadas condiciones climatológicas o existencia de nieve en los laterales no lo sé tal vez sea porque si pasan con la quitanieves lo rompen. La norma técnica obliga a que exista esos hitos de arista para la orientación del conductor que nos permitirían además si el control kilométrico u optométrico. Cuando una carretera carece de esos hitos de arista es una carretera oscura y peligrosa. La anchura insuficiente de la calzada. La anchura de la calzada es insuficiente tiene 4,10 metros es un incumplimiento de la norma de 1964. Esta norma técnica de 1964 ya nos estaba diciendo que esa carretera tendría que tener para que fuera segura 8 metros incluyendo un metro arcén y tres metros de carril, tres metros para cada sentido de carril. La actual norma técnica nos está diciendo que está actualmente la carretera tiene que tener como mínimo 7 metros si la velocidad de proyecto es de 40 kilómetros hora. Aquí estamos hablando de una específica de 40 pero si la velocidad de proyecto fuera de 40 kilómetros hora tiene que tener como mínimo 7 metros, 3 metros de carril, 3 metros de carril más 0,5 metros de arcén y 0,5 metros de arcén. La norma técnica aquí nos está diciendo carretera convencional velocidad de proyección entre 50 y 40 kilómetros hora, 3 metros de carril a 3,50 metros de carril. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is Kṛṣṇa Himself, and He also comes as the ācārya. He's both devotee and Kṛṣṇa at the same time. So there's a double benefit. He's teaching Kṛṣṇa consciousness as a devotee, but He's also Kṛṣṇa. If one dedicates him or herself to the lotus feet of Lord Caitanya, which means to—in service, what it means to dedicate oneself to the lotus feet, it means to become a servant and think, 'How can I do something to assist the Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu? What is His desire and how can I help Him?' And if one does this, then the person will know the true essence of devotional service. Then He goes on to say that the heart of anyone who gives submissive aural reception to the pleasing and sweet pastimes of Lord Caitanya immediately becomes cleansed of all material contamination— 'hṛdoya nirmala.' This contamination in the heart is completely cleansed if one gets on a regular schedule of hearing about Kṛṣṇa and about Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Then He says, 'Anyone who simply chants the name of Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya will immediately develop love of God.' So try 'Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya.' As I was doing āratik in my home this morning, and I offer the incense, and then I have to walk out on the porch to plant the incense, and then when I offer the lamp, I had to walk in the other room to find Nirakula to let her touch the lamp. And all the time I was still chanting the 'Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Prabhu Nityānanda' mantra. And I was remembering that the first time I came in contact with the Kṛṣṇa Consciousness Movement, I got a magazine that had a picture of Lord Caitanya on the front, and then it had the mantra of 'Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Prabhu Nityānanda.' I always felt that whenever, after I joined the temple, we'd chant the 'Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya' mantra, or I'd hear somebody else chant it, there was special mercy coming from that mantra. And then I confirmed it. It's in all the śāstra saying that the name of Caitanya Mahāprabhu is especially merciful. The name of Kṛṣṇa and all the names of God are known to be fully potent, but the name of Caitanya Mahāprabhu, says Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura, is especially merciful because Caitanya Mahāprabhu doesn't consider any offenses when you chant.So if you chant the name of Sri. Recién nacidos y datos de la campaña de vigilancia del uso del cinturón y los SRI ¿Cómo tienen que salir los bebés del hospital? Según los datos de la campaña de vigilancia del uso de los SRI mucha gente no está haciendo bien Del 10 al 16 de marzo de 2025 la DGT a controlado 448.494 vehículos (turismos, taxis, vehículos de mercancías y autobuses). Esto representa un incremento del 7,6% respecto a la campaña anterior. Denuncias Totales: 6.409 denuncias. Más de 900 denuncias por día. Uso del cinturón de seguridad (adultos): • Adultos denunciados: 6.024. • Conductores sin cinturón: 3.088. • Pasajeros delanteros sin cinturón: 1.291. • Pasajeros traseros sin cinturón: 1.645. • El 77% de los denunciados circulaban por carreteras convencionales. Sistemas de Retención Infantil (SRI): • Menores denunciados por incorrecto uso del SRI: 385. • Niños en asientos traseros con mal uso del SRI o sin él: 285. • Niños en asientos delanteros con mal uso del SRI o sin él: 100. ¿Qué sucede en los accidentes con el cinturón de seguridad? De los 133 fallecidos en accidentes durante lo que va del año y cuyo uso de dispositivos de seguridad ha sido determinado, 42 personas (31,6%) no usaban cinturón o SRI en el momento del siniestro. ¿Cómo ayuda el cinturón de seguridad y los SRI? • El uso adecuado del cinturón de seguridad reduce en un 50% la probabilidad de morir en caso de accidente. • El cinturón evita que los ocupantes sean expulsados del vehículo y reduce el impacto contra elementos como el parabrisas. • El uso correcto de los sistemas de retención infantil reduce hasta en un 75% la gravedad de las lesiones en caso de accidente. • Nueve de cada diez lesiones graves o mortales infantiles podrían evitarse con el uso adecuado del SRI. Sanciones • Desde 2022, no usar el cinturón de seguridad o los sistemas de retención infantil adecuados implica la pérdida de 4 puntos del permiso de conducir. Limpiaparabrisas ¿Cuándo se inventan? • Los limpiaparabrisas fueron inventados por Mary Anderson (1866-1953), nacida en Alabama, quien originalmente se dedicó a la construcción de edificios y a la agricultura. • Anderson tuvo la idea en 1902, cuando observó que el conductor de un taxi en Nueva York tenía que detenerse repetidamente para limpiar el parabrisas debido a la acumulación de agua y suciedad. • Su invento inicial era un dispositivo accionado manualmente desde el interior del vehículo. • Aunque Anderson logró patentar su invento, en aquel momento nadie quiso comprarlo debido a dudas sobre su viabilidad comercial. ¿Cuándo se introducen de forma efectiva? • A partir de la década de 1920, Henry Ford empezó a incorporar los limpiaparabrisas en sus automóviles, pero Anderson no recibió beneficio económico alguno, ya que la patente había expirado para entonces. ¿Los limpia son seguridad activa? • En la actualidad, circular sin utilizar limpiaparabrisas en días lluviosos o nevados es impensable, destacando la relevancia del invento. • El 16 de noviembre se celebra en Estados Unidos, Canadá, Europa y Asia el Día Internacional de Revisión de los Limpiaparabrisas • El objetivo principal de este día es concienciar a los conductores sobre la importancia de mantener los limpiaparabrisas en buen estado, especialmente antes del invierno, periodo caracterizado por condiciones climáticas adversas como lluvia, nieve y poca visibilidad. • La seguridad al volante durante la estación invernal depende en gran medida del buen estado de conservación de los limpiaparabrisas. • La recomendación final enfatiza la importancia de revisar y mantener en buen estado los limpiaparabrisas antes del invierno. My guest today is Michele Giddens, Co-Founder and CEO of Bridges Fund Management — one of the early architects of impact investing, before the term was even coined.Bridges now has over £2 billion in AUM invested in private equity and property, but back in 2002, it began with little more than a blank sheet of paper and a conviction that capital could — and should — be used to address some of society's biggest challenges.Michele and her co-founders, Sir Ronald Cohen and Philip Newborough, believed social and environmental impact didn't have to come at the expense of returns. That belief has held firm for over two decades — and continues to shape how Bridges invests today.After graduating with a PPE degree from Oxford, she skipped the corporate path and headed to Mexico City to teach English — the start of what became 15 years living and working abroad. From Hungary to Poland, Bangladesh to Mongolia, she followed the same instinct: a need to be close to where impact actually happens. That drive brought her back to the UK in 2000 to advise the Treasury's Social Investment Task Force, chaired by Sir Ronald Cohen. One of its key recommendations was to launch funds focused on underserved parts of the UK. Michele helped shape that idea — and stayed to build the first one.Their first fund was £40 million, including £10 million in catalytic capital from the UK government, structured to take more risk and go in first. “One of the very best uses of taxpayer money,” she says — because it helped unlock over £2 billion in private sector investment since.Today, Bridges operates across two verticals: building a more sustainable planet and a more inclusive economy. In property, that means co-living spaces, healthcare, and age-friendly housing. In private equity, it includes companies like AgilityEco, which helped 200,000 households reduce energy bills, and Talking Talent, which helps underrepresented employees rise through leadership.Michele is clear-eyed about what impact can and can't do. Some challenges need capital that's more patient, more risk-bearing, or even concessionary. That's why Bridges has built nonprofit arms to reach the edges of what the market can't serve.But she's equally convinced — and backed by two decades of results — that plenty of investments deliver both meaning and double-digit returns, if you design for it.That's been the aim from the start — not to trade one off against the other, but to hold both to a high standard. Twenty years on, that idea hasn't softened.What Michele and her team have built isn't just a firm. It's a bridge. My guest is Romina Reversi, Managing Director and Head of Sustainable Investment Banking Americas at Crédit Agricole CIB — one of the banks that helped write the very rules of the green bond market, and has stayed near the center of gravity ever since.Romina's path into banking didn't start with a mission to change the world. It started with a love of math — and a drive for precision — that took her from the University of Michigan straight onto JP Morgan's derivatives desk.She worked in equity structuring and sales, building a technical foundation and a strong client ethic. As she puts it, “All bankers know the product. But how do you actually serve your clients? That's the real work.”The pivot came in 2015. Romina took what she describes as a ‘leap of faith.'She moved from derivatives into a new and mostly uncharted part of the bank: ESG debt capital markets. Back then, most CFOs and treasurers hadn't heard of green bonds. Frameworks barely existed. She and a few others were flying around the world with a handful of PowerPoint slides, trying to explain what this market even was.In her own words, “There was no playbook. We were literally inventing how to pitch.”That blank page became her blueprint. Over the next several years, she helped structure more than 500 sustainable debt transactions — including Apple's first green bond and Uruguay's step-up, step-down sustainability-linked bond, the first of its kind in the world.Romina joined Crédit Agricole in 2021. It's a bank with deep roots in agriculture and a reputation as one of the earliest movers in green and sustainable finance. And today, she's building out their Americas operation with the same mix of ambition, nuance, and rigor that brought her success at JP Morgan.For Romina and her bank, sustainability is more than branding — it's ‘truly ingrained in their DNA.'Now leading the Americas team, Romina operates across the entire investment banking suite — bonds, loans, M&A, IPOs, ESG advisory, and beyond.Her mandate isn't just to sell green products. It's to embed sustainable thinking across structures. To know when a KPI isn't credible. To tell a client when the deal they want to do isn't in their best interest.Romina is thoughtful about risk. Dacă la Cotroceni va veni George Simion sau Victor Ponta, vor forţa o nouă alianţă politică şi un nou guvern, asta dacă pot face acest lucru. Dacă la Cotroceni vine Crin Antonescu sau Nicuşor Dan, alianţa actuală PSD/PNL/UDMR şi guvernul Ciolacu 2 au o şansă să continue. Economia şi-a încetinit creşterea, iar execuţia bugetară la trei luni a guvernului Ciolacu 2 nu arată atât de strălucit în îndeplinirea obiectivului de reducere a deficitului bugetar de la peste 9% anul trecut (ESA) la 7%. Dar situaţia bugetară nu este dezastruoasă, mai ales că Ministerul Finanţelor a reuşit să acopere peste 30% din necesarul de finanţare bugetară pentru acest an. România plăteşte dobânzi mai mari, dar pieţele financiare nu sunt închise pentru obţinerea acestor împrumuturi. Pe larg, în ZF.

My guest today is Hadewych Kuiper, Managing Director at Triodos Investment Management — a pure-play impact investing firm since day one, with a 30-year track record of turning capital into systemic change.However, Hadewych didn't arrive in finance with a grand plan to change the system. Her journey began in a small town in the north of the Netherlands, where she was raised in a Protestant household that blended structure with a quiet rebellion against rigidity. Her childhood was grounded, shaped by time in nature, and marked by her parents' early divorce — a rupture that taught her independence before most children even understand the concept. From an early age, she absorbed values that now form the spine of her leadership: directness, responsibility, and a refusal to look away when something doesn't make sense.Hadewych studied business administration at Erasmus University, and she didn't set out to change the finance world. But after a decade in corporate consulting, a simple question kept surfacing: what's the point? That question — and her drive for clarity, integrity, and purpose — eventually led her to Triodos just as the 2008 financial crisis hit.While big banks crumbled under complex products, Triodos stood firm, having never invested in what they didn't understand. That same principle guides them today: if it's not clear, it's not worth the risk.Today, Hadewych leads Triodos Investment Management, a €6 billion AUM firm built on that same philosophical foundation — but with a far broader mandate. Since founding Ecotrust Forest Management 20 years ago, she's been redefining forestry investment – consistently beating traditional market-rate returns while protecting ecosystems, communities, and future generations.Bettina grew up in politically turbulent Lima, Peru, with a scholar father, an artist-entrepreneur mother, and a childhood shaped by earthquakes, curfews, and curiosity. Her love of systems thinking began with a trip to the Galápagos Islands at age 14 and eventually led her to study evolutionary biology before pivoting to business.After earning her MBA at the University of Chicago, Bettina entered the world of commercial banking in the Pacific Northwest – right in the middle of the timber wars. But instead of picking a side, she asked a different question: How do we meet essential needs – like timber – without compromising ecosystems or future generations?That question led her to Ecotrust, a nonprofit focused on conservation-based development. There, she helped launch Craft3, a triple-bottom-line lender, and Beneficial State Bank. But the real spark came in 2004, when she co-founded EFM within Ecotrust to pioneer sustainable forest investing.By 2008, she bought a stake in the company and stepped in as CEO.EFM now manages 200,000 acres and nearly $500M in assets, with a staff of just 11 people and a vast network of contractors. Their model isn't just about timber. It's about carbon credits, conservation easements, water protection, salmon runs, tribal partnerships, and restoring degraded ecosystems.Bettina's forestry strategy is built on what she calls the Five R's:Rotation: Letting trees grow longer for higher-value wood.Retention: Leaving 10–30% of trees to support soil, seedbanks, and habitat.Reserves: Protecting special ecological areas, like salmon-bearing streams.Restoration: Rebuilding habitat, especially in fire-prone and aquatic systems.Relationships: Partnering with tribes, local communities, and land trusts.EFM's forests generate revenue through multiple streams. When timber prices dip, they don't rush to harvest – instead, they “store value on the stump.” Trees continue to grow, becoming more valuable over time. Carbon markets make this kind of patience financially viable.By deferring cuts, selling carbon offsets, or securing conservation easements, EFM creates liquidity without compromising ecological integrity.The results speak for themselves. Every fund exit has outperformed the NCREIF Timberland benchmark, and every acre under EFM's care becomes more ecologically and socially valuable over time.Forests don't have to be sacrificed for growth. Previous to his time teaching, Joshua spent four years as a missionary and Team Director with FOCUS at South Dakota State University.
