PART ONE:Paul and Scott geek out about the Bee Gees documentary, and the nature of being the kind of songwriter who MUST do it, no matter what.PART TWO:Dan Wilson chats about how Liam Gallagher of Oasis inspired the first new Semisonic music in years; why his relationship with songs has always been very practical; how his first massive hit was born from a need to mix up the set list; the theory he once had about lyrics that he doesn't have any more; the lesson he learned from writing with Carole King that he's carried through his entire career; why it was a good thing that Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks rejected his song idea; how Rick Rubin informed his approach to music; the gritty details on the two-day process of writing "Someone Like You" with Adele; why Nashville's songwriting ethic impacted his process; the time a song was finalized over pizza with John Legend and Chrissy Tiegen; and how fellow songwriter Teddy Geiger indirectly inspired a most unusual format for Dan's collection of wisdom for writers and musicians. ABOUT DAN WILSON:Songwriter, singer, musician, producer and acclaimed visual artist Dan Wilson is a Minnesota native and Harvard graduate who launched his music career with the band Trip Shakespeare, which was signed to A&M Records. He went on to co-found the rock band Semisonic, whose platinum-selling Feeling Strangely Fine album yielded the singles “Secret Smile,” “Singing in My Sleep,” and “Closing Time,” a chart-topping hit that earned Dan a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Song. He went on to reinvent himself as a behind-the-scenes hitmaker, earning a Song of the Year Grammy for co-writing “Not Ready to Make Nice” with the group then known as The Dixie Chicks, and writing three songs on Adele’s multiplatinum 21 album: “Don’t You Remember,” “One and Only,” and “Someone Like You,” which became an international hit and earned Dan an Album of the Year Grammy for his production work. Wilson has also found success in Nashville, co-writing Dierks Bentley’s number one hit “Home” and earning yet another Album of the Year Grammy nomination for Taylor Swift’s Red LP, for which he co-wrote and produced the song “Treacherous.” Dan’s long list of collaborators includes Carole King, Rachel Yamagata, Jason Mraz, Gabe Dixon, Weezer, Keith Urban, Josh Groban, James Morrison, P!nk, Leann Rimes, John Legend, Chris Stapleton, Panic! At the Disco, Cold War Kids, Noah Cyrus, Leon Bridges, Celine Dion, and many others. In addition to his acclaimed Words and Music by Dan Wilson solo concerts, he launched a social media series called Words & Music in Six Seconds. The series, which focuses on “forging collaborative relationships, seeking a community, testing out ideas in front of an audience, and writing better songs,” has recently been turned into a deck of 75 cards, designed by Dan, that distill his insights from nearly three decades of writing, performing, and collaborating with the world’s greatest musical artists. How crazy is it that Betsy and Kate have never done a Lucille Clifton book before? Nor a Brinton Turkle, but that's a little more understandable. Lucille Clifton was one of the most prolific Black picture book authors in the 70s. Spring has officially sprung and Betsy realized that today's book (which New York schoolchildren are read and given to read every single year around this time) would be the perfect way to celebrate not just the season but Clifton herself. But would Kate like it? Stay tuned, gentle listeners. In the meantime, those of you thinking yearningly of Spring will find much to love in this episode. Show Notes: - The best reading that you will encounter all day long is this June Jordan New York Times review. "Really okay book" she raves! https://www.nytimes.com/1973/11/04/archives/the-boy-who-didnt-believe-in-spring-by-jeannette-caines-illustrated.html - The books Jordan read and didn't like were Black Is Brown Is Tan by Arnold Adoff, Abby by Jeannette Caines, with pictures by Stephen Kellogg, Anthony and Sabrina by Ray Prather, Lordy, Aunt Hattie, by Ianthe Thomas, with pictures by Thomas di Grazia, Don't You Remember? by Lucille Clifton, illustrated by Evaline Ness, Good, Says Jerome, by Lucille Clifton, and finally All Us Come Cross the Water, by Lucille Clifton, with illustrations by John Steptoe. As Jordan said of that last book, "The father and son picture and the grandmother and grandson picture must compete, in my eyes, for Terrifying Zombie Page of the Year." - Macomber for Congress. Macomber may not have been a real candidate but I suspect that Turkle knew someone by that name and sneaked it in. But if you know anything about it, let us know. - I think it's fair to say that it's time for Henry Holt & Company to seriously re-illustrate and re-release the Everett Anderson books. Like Betsy mentions on the podcast, ONE OF THE PROBLEMS OF EVERETT ANDERSON is one of the few picture books we've ever seen about a kid dealing with a classmate that's being abused. An hour starting with Blush Response on vinyl, and moving onto tracks from 4 of my favourite albums, Gemini Principle, 21, Final Approach and 1984. Emphasis on transition on this mix, and I am quite happy with the outcome, bar the sound quality on 'Fade Away' and slight off beats here and there requiring the odd nudge or 3. As always, it was an off the cuff, 'do what you feel' type mix, so no plans, just me and the music, see what happens. 1 Blush Response by D Bridge / Instra:mental 2 Fade Away by Alix Perez 3 Waiting For A Meaningful Title by Mark System 4 Hot Hands by Marcus Intalex 5 Ponderosa by DBridge / Calibre 6 Don't You Remember? by Mark System 7 I'm Free by Alix Perez 8 Mourning Dawn by DBridge 9 Pursuit by Mark System 10 State 808 by Alix Perez 11 Meltdown by Marcus Intalex / Calibre 12 Creatures Of Habit by DBridge 13 Optix by Mark System 14 Paulista Dub by Marcus Intalex / S.P.Y 15 Pure Elegance by DBridge
A purely selfish upload, combining mixes #33 and #34 with a touch of Audacity editing to make #35, a 2+ hour mix of some of my favourite tunes, Bit off in parts but I enjoyed doing both hours, so be rude not to throw them together. 1 Blush Response by D Bridge / Instra:mental 2 Fade Away by Alix Perez 3 Waiting For A Meaningful Title by Mark System 4 Hot Hands by Marcus Intalex 5 Ponderosa by DBridge / Calibre 6 Don't You Remember? by Mark System 7 I'm Free by Alix Perez 8 Mourning Dawn by Dbridge 9 Pursuit by Mark System 10 State 808 by Alix Perez 11 Meltdown by Marcus Intalex / Calibre 12 Creatures Of Habit by D Bridge 13 Optix by Mark System 14 Paulista Dub by Marcus Intalex / S.P.Y 15 Pure Elegance by D Bridge 16 Strangeways by Marcus Intalex Ft. What do YOUR 'Color Choices' say about YOU? Remember when you were a youngster and the get-to-know you question was, “what is your favorite color?” Your favorite color and the colors you are most drawn to reveal a lot about you, your life, your needs and desires. Colors absolutely influence the way we feel, act and react to others. Think about it, why would you want to wear your magenta pink shirt one day and all black clothes another? Today we'll be talking about how crystals, rocks, metals and gemstones have special qualities that can enhance your life? Is there really magic in positive thinking? In Margaret Ann's newly released awesome book, Color Your Life With Crystals: Your First Guide to Crystals, Colors and Chakras (Findhorn Press, April 2013) she has distilled her knowledge and years of experience into an easy to understand guide that shows beginners how to use crystals, minerals, rocks, gemstones and metals to help them in school, with friends, with their emotions and in all parts of their lives. 2nd hour will be a replay of Sheldan Nidle
