As the Dixie Chicks' lead singer, Natalie Maines, made an off-the-cuff remark at a London concert on 12th March, 2003, she could not have known the comments would haunt her band (now known as ‘The Chicks') for decades.  Just days before the US invasion of Iraq, and to cheers from the British crowd, she said from the stage: “We're ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas.” A Guardian journalist jotted it down, and when those words reached the other side of the Atlantic, all hell broke loose. Dixie Chicks CDs were steamrolled in protest, country radio stations blacklisted their songs, and the band never recovered. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly talk through the Chicks' damage control strategy; ask whether the backlash was an organic response from Conservative Country fans, or an orchestrated, sexist campaign; and reveal how Taylor Swift has taken note of their downfall… Further Reading: • ‘The Dixie Chicks | Music' (The Guardian, 2003): https://www.theguardian.com/music/2003/mar/12/artsfeatures.popandrock • 'The Chicks' 2003 George W. This week on Diving In Deep with Sara Evans! Sara welcomes Levi Hummon, the talented son of renowned songwriter Marcus Hummon. In this engaging conversation, Levi shares his journey in the music industry, from his early days in Nashville to his recent successes, including his hit song "Paying For It" featuring Walker Hayes.Discover the challenges and triumphs of trying to make it as an artist in today's ever-changing music landscape. Levi opens up about his experiences with record deals, the importance of social media, and the influence of his family, including his mother, Becca Stevens, who runs the impactful organization Thistle Farms.Tune in as they discuss songwriting, collaboration, and the unique bond between Levi and his father, Marcus. Plus, get a glimpse into Levi's personal life as he shares exciting news about his upcoming wedding!Listen to Unbroke: (https://ffm.to/seunbroke). About Levi Hummon:Singer-songwriter Levi Hummon spent his early 20s practicing his art, but his immersion into country music started much, much earlier. From the day he was born, his father Marcus Hummon, (one of Nashville's most prolific GRAMMY-winning songwriters [The Dixie Chicks, Tim McGraw, Rascal Flatts]) immersed Levi in the music scene, and It didn't take long to realize the apple didn't fall far from the tree. At 24, Levi began releasing music of his own. Cleancut and compelling, he told stories of love and loss while building a loyal fanbase that has grown with him through every bend and break. As a Nashville native who was inspired by the legacies around him and had an undeniable gift of songwriting, it was no surprise that 5 years, 30 released songs, and 100 million streams later as an independent artist, Levi had created a name for himself. In 2021, his viral Walker Hayes collaboration sensation “Paying for It” cemented Levi's status as a rising country star. This sparked a new sense of confidence both on stage and in writing rooms that allowed him to discover the magnitude of his potential as an artist, and a new authentic version of Levi emerged. His follow-up tunes, “Bottled Up,” “For Me,” “Good Riddance,” and “Drink On” are the product of just that. Hummon says, “taking risks, finding my own voice, and showing the scars and roughness around the edges allowed me to portray the most honest version of myself”. Coming off of his first headlining tour in the Fall of ‘21, Levi found himself to be in high demand in the spring and summer of 2022. Warming up the stage for acts like Hardy, Jordan Davis, Brett Eldridge, Brett Young, and Dylan Scott, he was able to experience in person the effects of this momentum and the reward for being unapologetically himself. While listeners across genres are creating the demand now more than ever for both a 90's country comeback and an early 2000's alternative rock revival, Levi's new music has established a unique lane paved by boLET'S BE SOCIAL:Follow Levi Hummon:Instagram – (@levihummon)TikTok – (@levihummon)Facebook – (@levihummon)Website -- levihummon.comFollow Diving in Deep Podcast:Instagram –(@divingindeeppod)TikTok – (@divingindeeppod)Twitter – (@divingindeeppod)Facebook – (@divingindeeppod)Follow Sara Evans: Instagram – (@saraevansmusic)TikTok – (@saraevansmusic)Twitter – (@saraevansmusic)Facebook – (@saraevansmusic)Produced and Edited by: The Cast Collective (Nashville, TN)YouTube – ( @TheCastCollective

Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that is having a resurgence of The Chicks in our lives. This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out to talk about why the music of The Chicks, formerly known as the Dixie Chicks, should've been gay. For this episode, we will not be speculating about the sexuality of The Chicks themselves as human beings, but rather talking about why their songs give such a queer energy.  The Chicks write music from a political activist lens that is so incredibly different from the typical country music lens. To say their music resonates with queer people is a massive understatement. There are so many of their songs that were literally the gay music of the time. We didn't have Chappell Roan or Hayley Kiyoko or those types of openly queer artists. So for us and other gays of a certain age (ie. over 35), Goodbye Earl is as gay as it gets. These ahead of their time icons write songs that feel inclusive, anti-patriarchal, and that have lyrics that sound gay af when we sing along.  We talk about the gay specifics of songs like Goodbye Earl, a song that Ellie's extremely queer band The Femmes performs all the time. This song honestly should be a whole musical by now. The music video for it is so gay and so good and if you haven't seen it, do yourself a favor and watch it now. We also break down the lyrics in Long Time Gone, a song that is wildly gay for having been released in 2002. There is no straight explanation for this song, and to be honest… it's giving Betty.  We know one thing for sure, The Chicks music Should've Been Gay. Remember, you can give us your own answers to our Q & Gay on Instagram and follow along on Facebook, TikTok, and BlueSky @lezhangoutpod.  Find your fav tol and smol hosts Ellie & Leigh at @elliebrigida and @lshfoster respectively. Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

Jen Gunderman is one of the great keyboard players currently working out of Nashville. She is always busy in recording studios and venues around town with all kinds of bands, but is also on the road as a member of Sheryl Crow's band, a gig she's held for over 10 years now. I've had the pleasure of working with Jen now and then over the past number of years, always in the studio, and she always shows up to a session with great ideas and energy, raring to go. Her path to this point in her career is a very interesting one, as she grew up playing piano in church, made her way through college and had a stint working for the last gasps of the late 80's/early 90's major label scene, working in the offices at Columbia/Sony Records in New York from 1992-1994. Jen jumped ship from that world and landed a gig as the keyboard player for The Jayhawks. She spent a couple of years in the band, touring and recording before eventually landing in Nashville with her husband, guitarist Audley Freed. Jen found her way into session work, landed a job treaching music history at Vanderbilt (which she continues with today) and when she's not out with Sheryl Crow, she keeps very busy playing with local bands and artists all over Nashville. Jen is a killer piano player, but also knows how to lean into a B3 with the best of them. She plays a mean Wurlitzer, and can also come up with wildly creative soundscape parts as well. Jen's studio career has brought her into the studio with artists like Kris Kristofferson, Roger McGuinn, Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, The Dixie Chicks, St. Vincent, Emmylou Harris and many more. Welcome to season 4, episode 11 of the Today is the Day Changemakers Podcast. This week my guest is Nick Cucci, Executive Director, Recording Academy. It is not often you meet someone who has worked with the likes of David Bowie, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, Dixie Chicks, Soul Asylum, Harry Connick Jr, Kate Bush, KISS, and the list goes on and on. Nick Cucci started his career working for college radio in NJ. In this episode you will hear how Nick went from local college radio to being the Senior Executive Director for the New York Chapter of the Recording Academy. The Recording Academy does so much for the music industry – the one thing you may recognize is that the Recording Academy produces the Grammy Awards.  Before the Recording Academy he held senior positions at Rough Trade Records, Columbia Records, RCA Records and MTV.Nick understands and has seen first-hand the impact that music has on all of our lives. It helps people through difficult times, we listen to it to celebrate milestones, and it is part of our everyday life. Nick has spent his career helping those whose passion and love of the music get their voices and instruments heard by the masses. This story truly is one that proves you really have no idea where your path will lead you and who you will meet along the way. What I loved most about this interview is that you can truly hear how much Nick loves the work he does. It is not just a job or career. Music is embedded in his soul. Please take a moment to follow us on Facebook and Instagram at Today is the Day Live It. Aquarium Drunkard - SIDECAR (TRANSMISSIONS) - Podcast

This week on the show, we're pleased to present a conversation with Matt Sweeney. He's lived a truly dazzling life in music. After coming up playing with the great band Chavez, he contributed to masterworks of indie rock—including records by Cat Power and Bonnie “Prince” Billy, with whom he crafted the monumental 2005 classic Superwolf, a classic in the Aquarium Drunkard canon. He's also worked as an in-demand session player, working on recordings for the likes of Cat Stevens, Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond and other legends. Is Matt the only guy to play on both a Current 93 and Dixie Chicks project? We suspect so. His new band is called The Hard Quartet, which finds him joined by Stephen Malkmus of Pavement and The Jicks, Emmett Kelly of The Cairo Gang, and Jim White of The Dirty Three.  Their self-titled debut is out this Friday, October 4th. To quote from Jennifer Kelly's Aquarium Drunkard review of their self-titled album: “The term ‘supergroup' gets thrown around a lot, and it often means nothing more than ‘these people have all been in other bands.' But the Hard Quartet is a true super group, composed of four guys who have made their mark in music.”   Sweeney's a great conversationalist, and this talk gets into the new record, the philosophy of bass playing, the band's Monkees-like identity, the return of his web series Guitar Moves and much more. Aquarium Drunkard is supported by our subscribers. Twenty-five years ago, Kristi was brutally attacked in an ordeal that forever changed her perspective on personal safety. This week, she bravely revisits that horrifying night, when a man feigned familiarity to gain her trust, only to launch a violent assault while she was driving through what she believed to be a safe neighborhood. He left her for dead, and fled before police arrived. He then went on to attack two more women before he was caught, seven months later. Kristi says the ordeal, which is still vivid today, inspired her to launch the hugely successful K9s4COPS, a non-profit which places trained dogs with law enforcement agencies and in schools across the United States.  In this episode we learn about the incredible work K9s4COPS is doing every day, and how we can support it.  https://www.K9s4COPS.org STORIES00:00 - Start00:11 - Trigger Warning00:19 - Kristi's story00:43 - 24/25  years ago, a man approaches my car 01:43 - He walks away. This canceling business is not uncontroversial. It's also not new, even if the lingo is. I remember back in 2003 when the Country music trio then-named The Dixie Chicks responded to the US invasion of Iraq by telling a London audience, they were ashamed that our President was from their home state of Texas. The backlash was intense and immediate - with radio stations refusing to play their music and their music sales dropping dramatically. They even received death threats. So did the Beatles, of course, back in 1966, when during an interview John Lennon remarked that his band was currently more popular than Jesus. Aside from the death threats, some Christian groups organized public bonfires of Beatles records and paraphernalia. The Beatles considered ending their US tour early for their own safety. And then there was St. Paul, and even Jesus. Jesus, in describing conflict resolution at one point instructs his followers that if someone inside the community sins egregiously and is unwilling to apologize and atone, they should be treated like "a Gentile or a tax collector". Which is to say they should be treated as outsiders. Maybe Jesus was an early proponent of cancel culture. Want to support our podcast?Give Here https://redeemercincy.tpsdb.com/Give/podcast
