We had the pleasure of interviewing Highly Suspect over Zoom video! Never content to follow, Highly Suspect push rock music forward by trusting their instincts and raising a middle finger to everything else. The multi-GRAMMY® Award-nominated and gold-certified band - Johnny Stevens [vocals, guitar], Ryan Meyer [drums, vocals], Rich Meyer [bass, vocals], Matt Kofos [guitar] and Mark Schwartz [keyboards/guitars] - don't just talk about burning the rules and breaking the mold; they actually do so.The band's chemically imbalanced mix of gritty guitars, haunting piano, off-kilter synths, hip-hop production, cinematic vision, and beautifully possessed vocals transformed them into a phenomenon beloved by a diehard global fanbase known as “MCID” [My Crew Is Dope]. After grinding it out as an underground curiosity, they scraped a path to mainstream infamousness with their 2015 full-length debut, Mister Asylum. It earned a GRAMMY® Award nomination in the category of “Best Rock Album” as the single “Lydia” received a nomination for “Best Rock Song” was certified gold by the RIAA.The 2016 follow-up The Boy Who Died Wolf roared to life with the gold-selling “My Name Is Human,” which catapulted to #1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Chart and garnered a GRAMMY® Nomination for “Best Rock Song.” 2019's MCID affirmed them as the rare outfit who could collaborate with Young Thug and Gojira on the same album. Loudwire hailed the latter among the “50 Best Rock Albums of 2019.” With hundreds of millions of streams and sold out shows on multiple continents, Highly Suspect charged ahead of the pack again on 2022's The Midnight Demon Club with no compromises and no apologies as they challenged rock to be dangerous and maybe even life-changing again. Welcome back to another exciting episode of the Wisconsin Music Podcast. This week, we're diving deep into the vibrant rock scene with none other than Abaddon's End. This band is a powerhouse of talent and passion, featuring Kyle and Steve, who kickstarted the journey six years ago, and later welcomed Adam (aka Bach) on vocals, Tim on guitar, and most recently, Cole on keys. These guys are on fire! Since their revamped lineup in December 2022, they've penned 15 songs in just seven months and hit the stage with a full set list after only four months of rehearsals. Their sound is a unique blend of diverse influences, aiming to create music that resonates deeply with their audience. And guess what? They scooped up not one, but two Whammy Awards this year for Best Song of the Year and Best Rock Song of the Year. Impressive, right? In this episode, we get personal with the band members as they share their individual journeys into music. Tim, the guitar player, grew up immersed in bluegrass, while Kyle's musical roots run deep with a family band from the age of six. Cole, the keys player, discovered his passion through piano lessons and a love for Guitar Hero. Bach, the vocalist, has been singing since he could talk, with a rich history in choir and collaborations with notable artists. Together, they form an unstoppable force in the local music scene. We also delve into their creative process. From writing songs at lightning speed to rehearsing rigorously before recording sessions, Abaddon's End is all about authenticity. Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho. Young Australian rocker, Cassidy Paris released her debut album, “New Sensation” on December 8th. Cassidy has a very bright future ahead of her. Raised on classic hard rock and inspired by female rockers such as Lzzy Hale, Joan Jett, Pink, Pat Benatar & Avril Lavigne, the fiercely determined young woman is on a mission to inspire a new generation of younger fans to not only listen to Rock ‘n' Roll but pick up a guitar instead of a phone. At just 20 years old, Cassidy has released two sold out eps – “Broken Hearted” & “Flirt”, while having performed multiple live shows all over her home country of Australia and has now unleashed her first solo record on the international markets via Frontiers Music Srl. At the age of 11, Cassidy met singer songwriter Paul Laine (ex-Danger Danger, The Deviant's), who developed a unique mentoring role. Paul took Cassidy under his wing to help develop her as an artist and songwriter, collaborating with her in songwriting and producing her music. In 2018, she released the song 'Stand', a heartfelt song about ‘standing up for yourself' as a young woman. Cassidy continues to deliver that message, promoting anti-bullying through performances at many schools around Melbourne, Australia and is an active campaigner for the worldwide ‘Metalheads Against Bullying' organization. Her talents have not gone unnoticed by one of the major guitar giants Fender, lending their support by joining forces with Cassidy to bring her on as an endorser of Fender Squier Guitars. Cassidy has also joined the roster of Silverback Touring Agency. Cassidy has also been acknowledged as a semi-finalist for her song writing efforts in the International Songwriting Competition (ISC) for Best Rock Song and Best Unsigned Artist. I think one of the hardest things there is to do in music is to write a love song that expresses something real. I read that the song "Liar" by Paramore was written by Hayley Williams, the singer of the band, about her longtime bandmate Taylor York, and about the feelings she started to realize she'd had for him. Paramore has been a band for over 20 years, since Hayley and Taylor and Zac Farro, who plays drums, were all young teenagers. Paramore's won a Grammy for Best Rock Song, and they have multiple platinum albums. But with all that history, Taylor and Hayley only recently became a couple. "Liar" is a song off of their most recent album, This Is Why, which came out in February 2023. So I talked to Hayley, Taylor and Zac in their studio about how their song first came about and what it means to them. For more, visit songexploder.net/paramore.

EPISODE 36 - External Version Jake and Shelby from Nashville TN - Cover Sway and Drops of Jupiter Sway - Michael Bublé This song is about dancing, and being infatuated with your dance partner - Martin sings that when they sway together on the dance floor she is all he sees. Drops of Jupiter - Train In an interview with VH1, lead singer Pat Monahan revealed that he wrote this song about the death of his mother. Train released their first album in 1998, and were touring that year when Monahan's mom was dying of lung cancer - she was a heavy smoker. This was before the widespread use of cell phones, and Monahan made many stops to pay phones on the tour to speak with his mom during this difficult time. In December of that year, his mother died, and in early 1999 Train was working on their next album when their record company started pressuring them for a hit. Monahan returned to his childhood home in Pennsylvania, and woke one morning with the words "back in the atmosphere" in his head. Beginning a time of healing, he started to compose the song. Said Monahan: "Loss of the most important person in my life was heavy on my mind, and the thought of 'what if no one ever really leaves? What if she's here but different. The idea was, she's back here in the atmosphere." He recorded a demo of the song and played it a week later for Donnie Ienner, who was president of their record company, Columbia. While Monahan wasn't sure how the song would go over, Ienner loved it and told him it was his Grammy song. He was right: It won Grammys for Best Rock Song and Best Instrumental Arrangement With Accompanying Vocalist. Ienner had Train record the song quickly so they could put it on the album and use it as the title track. Temperley was born in 1978 in Mosman Park, Western Australia, and grew up in Fremantle. At seven years of age, his name was changed to 'Satyam Kavyen Temperley'—Temperley is his mother's maiden name and 'Satyam Kavyen' means "Poet of Truth". The Temperley family were members of the 'Orange People' (Rajneesh movement) and made trips to India as well Oregon, United States, throughout the early 1980s. Between the ages of seven and 12, Temperley attended the Lance Holt School, a Fremantle community school. At the age of thirteen, he accompanied his mother on a trip to India, where they stayed at the Osho International Meditation Resort in Pune. It was during this trip that he enrolled in an international alternative boarding school in Devon called Ko Hsuan that is based on the teachings of controversial Indian mystic Osho. Temperley was accepted as a boarder and remained at the school for a year: “That was an amazing place, musically. They had a really good music room. If we had two periods of math, in between we'd run off and jam for 10 minutes. We'd come back and be totally chilled because we'd gotten all that nervous energy out of our systems.” Temperley referred to his time at Ko Hsuan as his "saving grace", and it was there that he discovered a passion for music before he returned to Fremantle and John Curtin High School due to homesickness: “Then I thought I was going to become an actor until I started wagging school and writing songs.” Kav Temperley was frontman, bassist and songwriter of legendary Australian Rock band and 1990's Indie icons, Eskimo Joe. With 6 studio albums under their belts and sales in excess of 750,000, in Australia alone, the band has seen 3 of those albums debut at number 1 on the ARIA charts, with steamroller ‘Black Fingernails, Red Wine' shining for a monster 62 weeks in the ARIA Chart Top 50 and “Foreign Land”, from their 4th album ‘Inshalla', bringing home 2 APRA Awards, for Most Played Rock Song on Australian radio and Best Rock Song of 2010.
Everyone was "Counting Blue Cars" back in the late 90s with the band DISHWALLA. The track earned them a Billboard Award for “Best Rock Song” for 1996 as well as two ASCAP Awards for “Rock Track of the Year” in both 1996 and 1997, driving Pet Your Friends to sell more than a million copies worldwide. Touted by fans and industry alike as one of the best live bands to come out of the 90's, Dishwalla is here to stay, with the stories and bruises to prove it. Drummer George Pendergast joins Casio this week to talk about their new EP ALIVE available everywhere.
In 2001 several revolutionary albums stood nominated for Album Of The Year at that year's Grammy Awards. Important records by Radiohead (Kid A), Eminem (The Marshall Mathers LP), and Beck (Midnite Vultures), all of which would go on to great acclaim and influence to new generations of musicians who discovered them. The conventional wisdom was that one of these three albums would take home the grand prize of the evening, but events played out very differently, and would contribute to increasingly disdainful public opinion towards the award. The Grammies already had a long and storied history of nominating "wrong" artists and albums for "Best Of The Year" awards that would earn widespread criticism among fans and critics. It happened when Jethro Tull took "Best Hard Rock/Metal Recording" by Metallica, it happened when Eric Clapton took "Best Rock Song" from Nirvana, and it happened once again when cerebral jazz-rockers and boomer institution Steely Dan took "Album Of The Year" with their 8th studio recording "Two Against Nature".On this episode of Jukebox Zeroes, songwriter and synth-wizard Steve Borek of Telelectrix joins Lilz and Patrick to discuss the controversy and listen to the yacht rock staple's 2000 record. Join us for frank discussions on timelessness, old guard thinking, and be thoroughly skeeved out by the various songs about underage girls.#wearenormalnowLocal Music Feature: The Heartsleeves - "Simple Machine"
This is by far the worst year we've covered yet. We've got riots, the war in Vietnam, and a small town in Wisconsin seceding from the United States and declaring war on the country - yes, you read that right. We also have expanded our year coverage to explore some of the most intriguing true crime cases as they happened. Also, Creed won a Grammy in 2001 for Best Rock Song for their hit "With Arms Wide Open."
She may be petite and blonde, but don't let that fool you. Phoebe Bridgers is a GIANT. A songwriting giant. And her mid-2020 album "Punisher" was not only the perfect accompaniment to Covid quarantine, but it solidified the Californian as a bona fide commercial and critical star. Her ability to weave in angst, anger, humor and indifference into compelling, catchy, layered songs resulted in a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album, while "Kyoto" was also nominated for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance. Other highlights of the album (of which there are many) are "Garden Song" and "I Know The End." The latter version, which she performed on "SNL," garnered headlines when she screamed and smashed her guitar – not unlike how she has already smashed stereotypes.

Almost out of nowhere, Alabama Shakes' 2015 album "Sound & Color" took the music world by storm. Fueled by Brittany Howard's Janice-meets-Aretha soulful treatise on love, loss and longing, "Sound & Color" brings together blues, rock, soul, R&B, Southern rock -- and so much more. And the world was here for it all. Fueled by the gritty and thumping "Don't Wanna Fight," the album was loved by music fans and music critics at the same time -- a novelty, for sure. It would go on to be nominated for six Grammys, including Album of the Year. "Don't Wanna Fight" would take home the Grammy for both Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song. But like the rest of the album, it's SO much more than "rock."

This interview was recorded backstage of Paris Download Festival in 2018 ▬ About Nothing More ▬ Nothing More is an American rock band from San Antonio, Texas. Formed in 2003, the band spent much of the 2000s recording independent albums and struggling to maintain a steady lineup or attract record label interest. Towards the end of the decade, the band's long-time drummer, Jonny Hawkins, decided to switch to being the band's frontman and lead vocalist, stabilizing the band's core lineup along with other long-time members Mark Vollelunga (guitar) and Daniel Oliver (bass). The band self-funded and recorded their fourth studio album, Nothing More, over the course of three years and used it to gain the attention of Eleven Seven Music record label, who signed the band to a five album record contract upon hearing it. The album became the band's breakthrough release in 2014, with multiple charting singles, including "This is the Time (Ballast)", which hit number 1 on the Mediabase Active Rock chart and number 2 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart, and "Mr. MTV", "Jenny", and "Here's to the Heartache" all charting in the top 15 of both charts. The band began working on a follow-up in 2016 while continuing to tour in support of their self-titled release, and in September 2017, released their fifth studio album - their second on a major record label - The Stories We Tell Ourselves. The lead single, "Go to War", outperformed the prior singles, topping the Mainstream Rock chart, and the release earned the band three Grammy Award nominations; Best Rock Album for the album, and Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance for "Go to War". The band continued to promote the release moving into 2018, releasing singles, "Do You Really Want It?" and "Just Say When", and embarking on multiple North American tours into 2019. ▬About ZanZanA ▬ ZanZanA is the official YouTube channel of the show METAL, hosted by Karim BENAMOR. “Stay High” won Brittany Howard a Grammy for Best Rock Song and spent weeks on the charts. Just when you thought the track couldn't get any better, Childish Gambino steps in with a resonant take from the remix album “Jaime Reimagined,” due out on vinyl in September.
Billboard released the list of the “best Mainstream Rock Songs” - none of which John Ireland has ever heard of… It sparks a debate about the “best rock songs of all-time” and if new rock music even exists - Ireland explains why he thinks it does not.) We also took calls from listeners about the best rock songs ever, while Ireland tries to argue with Lindsey that there hasn't been a “new” rock band since Dave Matthews Band came out. Plus, Mason is really excited to see Black Widow and plans to host a Mason Movie Night - but he changes his mind about the movie and decides he'd rather screen Space Jam 2 with listeners. He asks everyone if they'd rather have a great face and ugly body or vice versa. GAME OF GAMES - Ireland hosts a round of “Common Thread,” where everyone guesses what each list of people has in common.
We had the pleasure of interviewing K.Flay over Zoom video! Alt-rock’s artful enigma K.Flay (the stage name of Kristine Flaherty) hurls fistfulls of theoretical paint at the modern music landscape by announcing her forthcoming EP ‘Inside Voices’, dropping June 11th via BMG. The GRAMMY-nominated musical changeling throws caution to the wind on the forthcoming collection, instead choosing to scream a primal roar of self-confidence across five tracks of fresh, biting self-expression. Kicking off this next phase in her already varied & exciting discography is the first single “Four Letter Words” - birthed from a very real moment in her life (cue the first line “I drank a liter of tequila in my bedroom, it’s taking every ounce of power not to text you”), the song kicks off with a chugging guitar before erupting into a cathartic sonic explosion that evolves the manic loneliness felt post-breakup into finding the strength to confidentially say “FUCK YOU” to the one that didn’t doesn’t deserve you. In a fitting visual accompaniment, the artist rages out in her bedroom while two cartoon characters, IV (representing the 'id') and OV (representing the 'superego') wreak havoc on her psyche. It’s a shape-shifter of a song that perfectly encapsulates the forthcoming EP’s sonic variety and expression. Throughout the collection, K.Flay offers up a smorgasbord of colorful alternative art-pop -- unexpected, exhilarating, and truly one-of-kind, be it via “Dating My Dad” that features Barker on drums and examines how we repeat the same tired behaviors of those who raised us, or via the snarling “TGIF” that asks the listener to rethink society’s tendency to “tune out” the bullshit going on in the world and boasts a heaven-sent solo from Tom Morello. The EP also features the clever and irreverent rap closer “My Name Isn’t Katherine” (a comical reference to her issue with constantly being misnamed), and “Good Girl”, a co-writing collaboration with Dan Reynolds and an infectious punk-tinged singalong about reaching your breaking point when it comes to politeness and finding the courage to not give a fuck anymore. The Chicago-born K.Flay’s near-undefinable amalgamation of dark-electro soundscapes, art-pop sensibilities, spitfire rhymes, industrial rock backbone and versatile chameleon-like vocals has led the songwriter/artist/multi-instrumentalist to two GRAMMY nominations (Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical for ‘Every Where Is Some Where’, and Best Rock Song for "Blood in the Cut"), tours alongside Grouplove, Imagine Dragons & Thirty Seconds To Mars, and festival spots at ACL Fest, Bonnaroo, Coachella, Treefort, and Riot Fest. She most recently dropped the three-song cover collection ‘Don’t Judge A Song By Its Cover’ that included off-the-wall remakes of songs by Limp Bizkit, The Offspring & Green Day, and appeared on songs by Arkelles and Jax Anderson. PART ONE:Paul and Scott geek out about the Bee Gees documentary, and the nature of being the kind of songwriter who MUST do it, no matter what.PART TWO:Dan Wilson chats about how Liam Gallagher of Oasis inspired the first new Semisonic music in years; why his relationship with songs has always been very practical; how his first massive hit was born from a need to mix up the set list; the theory he once had about lyrics that he doesn't have any more; the lesson he learned from writing with Carole King that he's carried through his entire career; why it was a good thing that Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks rejected his song idea; how Rick Rubin informed his approach to music; the gritty details on the two-day process of writing "Someone Like You" with Adele; why Nashville's songwriting ethic impacted his process; the time a song was finalized over pizza with John Legend and Chrissy Tiegen; and how fellow songwriter Teddy Geiger indirectly inspired a most unusual format for Dan's collection of wisdom for writers and musicians. ABOUT DAN WILSON:Songwriter, singer, musician, producer and acclaimed visual artist Dan Wilson is a Minnesota native and Harvard graduate who launched his music career with the band Trip Shakespeare, which was signed to A&M Records. He went on to co-found the rock band Semisonic, whose platinum-selling Feeling Strangely Fine album yielded the singles “Secret Smile,” “Singing in My Sleep,” and “Closing Time,” a chart-topping hit that earned Dan a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Song. He went on to reinvent himself as a behind-the-scenes hitmaker, earning a Song of the Year Grammy for co-writing “Not Ready to Make Nice” with the group then known as The Dixie Chicks, and writing three songs on Adele’s multiplatinum 21 album: “Don’t You Remember,” “One and Only,” and “Someone Like You,” which became an international hit and earned Dan an Album of the Year Grammy for his production work. Wilson has also found success in Nashville, co-writing Dierks Bentley’s number one hit “Home” and earning yet another Album of the Year Grammy nomination for Taylor Swift’s Red LP, for which he co-wrote and produced the song “Treacherous.” Dan’s long list of collaborators includes Carole King, Rachel Yamagata, Jason Mraz, Gabe Dixon, Weezer, Keith Urban, Josh Groban, James Morrison, P!nk, Leann Rimes, John Legend, Chris Stapleton, Panic! At the Disco, Cold War Kids, Noah Cyrus, Leon Bridges, Celine Dion, and many others. In addition to his acclaimed Words and Music by Dan Wilson solo concerts, he launched a social media series called Words & Music in Six Seconds. The series, which focuses on “forging collaborative relationships, seeking a community, testing out ideas in front of an audience, and writing better songs,” has recently been turned into a deck of 75 cards, designed by Dan, that distill his insights from nearly three decades of writing, performing, and collaborating with the world’s greatest musical artists. You can get your own set and find out more about Dan’s amazing career at danwilsonmusic.com.
In this episode of Across The Margin : The Podcast we find host Michael Shields in conversation with Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, producer, and visual artist JT Daly. Daly previously fronted the Nashville-based band Paper Route and more recently co-produced K. Flay's wildly successful album Every Where Is Some Where, including the hit single "Blood in the Cut" (for which Daly received Grammy nominations for Best Rock Song and Best Engineered Album). Daly is onto his next project, a new band called The Voodoo Children who are releasing their debut album this spring entitled Instant Nostalgia. The Voodoo Children could be looked at as a collective, a team of talents that JT has worked with throughout his career. The phenomenally talented lineup includes his partner Jo Meredith (Sad Penny), Daniel Tashian (producer and co-writer with Kacey Musgraves), K.Flay, Bantug, Abby Wright, Angela Plake (Bandit), Oran Thornton, Josh Lippi, his longtime engineer Josh Lovell, and Gregg Alexander of the New Radicals. While The Voodoo Children certainly persist as the main focus of the interview, Michael and JT embark on a career spanning interview where they expound upon JT’s early influences, his solo album entitled Memory, the soundtrack he composed for ESPN’s 30 for 30 documentary film Chuck & Tito, and much, much more. K.Flay is an American singer, rapper and songwriter. Her music career apparently started off as a joke where she bragged to her friends that writing a rap song was simple and that even she could do it… And well, she proved it and wrote a song of her own, and the rest is history! She released her first mixtape in 2005 and kept writing and performing. Fast forward to 2014 she released her debut album Life As a Dog and not only did it debut at number 2 on Billboard's Heatseekers Albums chart and also made it's way to number 14 on Billboards Rap Album chart which is impressive in itself. It's no surprise that she was the first to sign under Imagine Dragons singer Dan Reynolds' label Night Street Records. She's toured with Third Eye Blind, Dashboard Confessional, AWOLNATION early on before embarking on bigger tours like touring major stadiums opening for Imagine Dragons and then headlining on her own shows. Her songs have been praised by many including Taylor Swift and if that doesn't impress you, how does 2 Grammy nominations sound... Yeah that was in 2018, one was for Best Engineered Album and Best Rock Song for her hit Blood in the Cut.She's also appeared on The Late Late Show with Seth Meyers, she's got 3 studio albums to date and so much more!

The song “Closing Time” by the American rock band Semisonic came out in March 1998. It hit #1 on the Alternative charts, and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock Song. It gets played in stadiums, Weird Al covered it, and it’s the last song of the night in countless bars. Since then, Dan Wilson, the lead singer and songwriter of Semisonic, has become a powerhouse songwriter who has written or co-written for artists like John Legend and Taylor Swift. And he’s won Grammys for his songwriting with the Dixie Chicks and Adele. But over two decades ago, Dan and his bandmates John Munson and Jacob Slichter were in Minneapolis, getting ready to start work on their second album, Feeling Strangely Fine. In this episode of Song Exploder, Dan breaks down how that process led to "Closing Time." songexploder.net/semisonic
The band Vampire Weekend started in 2006, in New York. Their third album came out in 2013, and was named one of the best albums of the year all over the place, and it won a Grammy. But it took six years for their next album, Father of the Bride, to come out. This album’s also been nominated for a Grammy, for album of the year. And the lead single from it, “Harmony Hall,” was nominated for Best Rock Song. In this episode, Ezra Koenig from Vampire Weekend takes “Harmony Hall” apart. I spoke to him along with producer Ariel Rechtshaid, and the two of them detailed winding path the song went down, over several years, before it finally took shape. songexploder.net/vampire-weekend
This Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum artist and songwriter is the definition of a modern-day rock star. With the recent release of his EP ‘Oh My Messy Mind’ which featured the infectious duet “Peer Pressure” featuring Julia Michaels, and the heart-wrenching ballad “Bad,” he continues to highlight his songwriting and musical prowess. This past year he finished his sold-out US heading tour and this summer he opened for Ed Sheeran on his overseas European arena tour. In 2018, after the release of his sophomore album ‘Electric Light,’ he won the world over again with its singles “Wild Love,” “Pink Lemonade” and “Us.” Following the release of his debut album ‘Chaos And The Calm,’ featuring the singles, “Hold Back The River” and “Let It Go” he was nominated for Best Rock Album, Best Rock Song, and Best New Artist at the 2016 Grammy Awards. In the UK, the record became the “Biggest New Artist Album Release” that year and has sold nearly 5 million albums and generated 3.5 billion streams worldwide. Receiving the BRIT’s Critics Choice award in 2015, this songwriter has also gone on to win Best Male Solo Artist at the BRITS, International Newcomer at the ECHO Awards, Best New Act & Best Solo Artist at the Q Awards, and Most Performed Work for “Hold Back The River” at the Ivor Novello Awards. On the other side of the globe, he has also received a nod for “Best International Artist” at the ARIA Awards in Australia. And The Writer Is…James Bay!This episode is sponsored by Bandzoogle. K.Flay is the only woman nominated in the Best Rock Song category for the 2018 Grammy Awards, and she's one of only a handful of women to get a nod in the past decade. Plus, she thinks hot dogs count as sandwiches.
In 2015 Ken’s band Failure released their first album in 19 years, and Paramore's hit "Ain't It Fun” (mixed by Ken) won a Grammy for ”Best Rock Song”. Ken’s work on both sides of the glass has been varied and successful, and we were happy to sit down with him backstage in San Diego to discuss the making of his new record, a secret mix project he’s really excited about, his favorite gear, plugins, and some of the stuff he uses in the Failure live show. Artists Ken Andrews has worked with include: Paramore, Pete Yorn, Beck, Tenacious D, Blink-182, M83, A Perfect Circle, Chris Cornell, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Jimmy Eat World, Nine Inch Nails, and Failure. Is it possible to overstate the affect the Beatles continue to have on music, art and life? I can’t imagine so. It can literally be measured by life before and after you genuinely procure their music. John, Paul, George, Ringo, and producer George Martin changed everything. They were the lyrical voice of a whole generation and wrote the living soundtrack other artists aspire to. There will never, ever be another era of its kind. The Beatles advanced the process by which music is written, recorded and received. The writing duo of McCartney and Lennon is the blueprint by which modern music is crafted. It is so beautifully aligned in world history that without it means we live in a different world. The Beatles are eternal art. The beginnings of this wonderful moment in time were captured by director Richard Lester in the movie “A Hard Day’s Night”. Chuck Oney and I met while working at the same TV station in 1998. He was deep into his music and the daily work we both were challenged with. Our working relationship would be only several months brief, but in live TV some moments live beyond their time value and we got to know each other. Since those days, he has won an Ohio Music Award for Best Rock Song and 3 Emmy Awards for his work on WOSU PBS local show “Broad and High”. When I caught up with him recently I had to ask what his most influential movie would be. Without a moment’s hesitation he passionately exclaimed “The Beatles, A Hard Day’s Night”. My mind leapt as I realized we had another grand artistic connection. Here now, for you to witness our testimonial are The Beatles… TC
