We have another excellent twofer up this week with two decorated artists. First is Andrew Roachford! In the US, he's primarily remembered for his 1989 hit "Cuddly Toy" which still slaps today, but did you know he's an MBE back in England and one of their biggest selling artists? Over the years, whether fronting his band Roachford, or singing with Mike + the Mechanics, or doing his own solo work, he's gone from strength to strength. Next month he goes on a UK Tour celebrating his entire body of work, including his latest album Twice in a Lifetime, as well as performing Christmas classics. Then we hear from celebrated singer/songwriter/producer Teddy Geiger. After being labeled the next big thing in the mid-2000s and having success with hits like "For You I Will", Teddy mostly retreated to the comfort of the studio. Eventually she came out as trans in 2017 which is also around the time her career exploded thanks to award winning collaborations with artists like Shawn Mendes and 5 Seconds of Summer. She just released her latest solo album, Teresa, which is very much a studio creation and shows what she's into these days. We discussed the whole amazing journey. Enjoy!  www.roachford.co.uk www.teddyxo.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

Something we've never done before is pair two of the best songwriters in the business to explain how they create a successful collaboration. Teddy Geiger is a Grammy nominated songwriter who's written countless number ones. You've likely heard her work with Sean Mendes, Leon Bridges, and Christina Aguilera, among many others. She’s also a critically acclaimed artist who's just released a single called “Love Somebody” written with Ricky Reed and Dan Wilson. Dan Wilson is the bandleader of Semisonic, famous for the song “Closing Time,” and the co-writer of Adele's “Someone Like You” and “Ready to Make Nice” by the Chicks. Wilson recently shared his top songwriting and collaboration tips published as a deck of cards called Words and Music in Six Seconds. PART ONE:Paul and Scott geek out about the Bee Gees documentary, and the nature of being the kind of songwriter who MUST do it, no matter what.PART TWO:Dan Wilson chats about how Liam Gallagher of Oasis inspired the first new Semisonic music in years; why his relationship with songs has always been very practical; how his first massive hit was born from a need to mix up the set list; the theory he once had about lyrics that he doesn't have any more; the lesson he learned from writing with Carole King that he's carried through his entire career; why it was a good thing that Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks rejected his song idea; how Rick Rubin informed his approach to music; the gritty details on the two-day process of writing "Someone Like You" with Adele; why Nashville's songwriting ethic impacted his process; the time a song was finalized over pizza with John Legend and Chrissy Tiegen; and how fellow songwriter Teddy Geiger indirectly inspired a most unusual format for Dan's collection of wisdom for writers and musicians. ABOUT  DAN WILSON:Songwriter, singer, musician, producer and acclaimed visual artist Dan Wilson is a Minnesota native and Harvard graduate who launched his music career with the band Trip Shakespeare, which was signed to A&M Records. He went on to co-found the rock band Semisonic, whose platinum-selling Feeling Strangely Fine album yielded the singles “Secret Smile,” “Singing in My Sleep,” and “Closing Time,” a chart-topping hit that earned Dan a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Song. He went on to reinvent himself as a behind-the-scenes hitmaker, earning a Song of the Year Grammy for co-writing “Not Ready to Make Nice” with the group then known as The Dixie Chicks, and writing three songs on Adele’s multiplatinum 21 album: “Don’t You Remember,” “One and Only,” and “Someone Like You,” which became an international hit and earned Dan an Album of the Year Grammy for his production work. Wilson has also found success in Nashville, co-writing Dierks Bentley’s number one hit “Home” and earning yet another Album of the Year Grammy nomination for Taylor Swift’s Red LP, for which he co-wrote and produced the song “Treacherous.” Dan’s long list of collaborators includes Carole King, Rachel Yamagata, Jason Mraz, Gabe Dixon, Weezer, Keith Urban, Josh Groban, James Morrison, P!nk, Leann Rimes, John Legend, Chris Stapleton, Panic! At the Disco, Cold War Kids, Noah Cyrus, Leon Bridges, Celine Dion, and many others. In addition to his acclaimed Words and Music by Dan Wilson solo concerts, he launched a social media series called Words & Music in Six Seconds. The series, which focuses on “forging collaborative relationships, seeking a community, testing out ideas in front of an audience, and writing better songs,” has recently been turned into a deck of 75 cards, designed by Dan, that distill his insights from nearly three decades of writing, performing, and collaborating with the world’s greatest musical artists. In this episode we chat with Ross Nicol, founder of Off Season Creative, a boutique Brooklyn-based creative direction agency with a focus in music. Ross has worked with the likes of Teddy Geiger, Lucius, Mom + Pop Music, Real Estate, Whitney, the list goes on…. So our conversation touches on everything he’s learned in the music industry — from the importance of landscape and location, to understanding the artist mindset, to the indie/major divide (or lack thereof), and how data is more useful on the strategic managerial end than on the discovery and conceptual end. Of course, one of the really important byproducts of the digitization of the music industry is just how much data can actually help empower artists to take control of their own careers. And Ross has been helping artists do just that, drawing on his extensive knowledge and experience with management, marketing, creative direction, and design. Originally from San Diego, Ross went to school in Nashville and eventually migrated even further east to New York City. After a long bout at a major NYC artist management firm, Ross decided to go indie himself, launching Off Season Creative, a company that takes “a holistic and strategic approach in defining and developing an artist’s creative direction through design, photography, and typography.”

This week, we brave the elements (and a lot of birds) to bring you our Pose recap, featuring a cooking tip from Jaye, followed by a discussion of, of course, Tessa Thompson coming out. Then we venture into the world of people being mad at Tom Daley and Dustin Lance Black for... using a surrogate? Things only get more bizarre from there as we try to figure out who Bebe Rexha is and why she hates the girls from RuPaul's Drag Race, and after a brief interlude of good news about our old friend Teddy Geiger, we address the story of the moment: America's least favorite Asian trans man, Scarlett Johansson.  This episode contains brief mention of sexual harassment.  Remember to email or DM us your questions for us to answer in our advice episode! Two-time Grammy nominee Billy Mann released a couple of solo albums as an artist via A&M Records in the mid-1990s before finding success as a songwriter in the European market. He eventually returned to the US and began getting his songs recorded by artists such as Celine Dion, Dakota Moon, and Daryl Hall & Joan Oates, who made “Do It For Love” Billy’s first #1 Billboard single as a songwriter in 2002. Other artists who charted with Billy’s songs in this era include Michael Bolton, Art Garfunkel, and Jim Brickman. He soon began finding hits with a new wave of pop stars, beginning with Jessica Simpson’s Top 20 single, “With You.” Around the same time he became a frequent collaborator with Pink, who has included many of Billy’s compositions on her albums, including “God is a DJ,” “Stupid Girls,” "Dear Mr. President," "I'm Not Dead," "Glitter in the Air.,” and "The Truth About Love." Additionally, Mann co-wrote and produced Teddy Geiger’s platinum selling single “For You I Will (Confidence).” He has worked with a variety of artists, including Cher, Sting, John Legend, Kelly Rowland, Ricky Martin, Backstreet Boys, Martina McBride, Allen Stone, Josh Groban, and others. In addition to his efforts as a songwriter and producer, Mann is a respected music executive. After forming his own Stealth Entertainment, he went on to become a President at both EMI and BMG Rights Management. He is currently Chairman and CEO of Green & Bloom/Topline, a hybrid record label and publishing company. He balances his business activities with his own creative efforts and philanthropic initiatives, which he calls the pursuit of "the hit life" over the hit song.
