Smokeless oral nicotine products are addictive, and their use has potential adverse effects on some but not all biomarkers of cardiovascular risk. The use of some types of these products, for instance, is associated with an increased mortality risk in those with ischemic heart or cerebrovascular disease. Similarly, smokeless tobacco has the potential to increase the risk of oral cancer, but the risks depend on the chemical composition of the product. The market of smokeless oral nicotine products has transformed since the last American Heart Association smokeless tobacco policy statement. Several varieties of tobacco-free oral nicotine products-including oral nicotine pouches; nontherapeutic nicotine gums, lozenges, and tablets; and nicotine gummies-have rapidly proliferated. The sales of oral nicotine pouches, in particular, have increased substantially; however, no data are available on their cardiovascular or health risks. In addition, synthetic (compared with tobacco-derived) nicotine has been used in some brands of oral nicotine products, but its cardiovascular and health effects have been inadequately studied. Robust public policy levers are identified to support ending addiction to all commercial tobacco products. Breaking bread and multi-sensory co-design. Rinat breaks down her immersive project, The Rebirth of Hope, which utilizes sound and taste to tap into primal, nonverbal memories. By choosing raw ingredients that resonate with their personal dimensions of hope, participants create a literal "bite of hope" to consume collectively, bridging the deeply personal with the universal synergy of a group. Translating data into human music. The Rebirth of Hope project actively translated participant choices into real-time visual musical scores. By mapping hope attributes to chords, rhythm, and melody, a live band performed the collective, experimental music of the exhibition's audience. The accountability gap in design education. As a faculty member at Parsons, Rinat addresses the split between the theory of "design for good" and the messy reality of execution. She argues that standard academic design thinking often leaves prototyping and testing to the very end, missing the vital skills of real-world implementation, business case development, and multi-team collaboration. We've looked at the habits of musicians, the methods of filmmakers, the thinking of scientists, the systems of entrepreneurs, and the practices of some of the most creative people who have ever lived.As we prepare to launch a new creativity series on Moonshots, beginning with Steven Kotler's *The Art of the Impossible*, I wanted to pause and reflect on what we've learned so far.What surprised me most wasn't how different these thinkers are. It was how often they arrived at the same conclusions.A legendary music producer, a bestselling novelist, the founder of Pixar, one of history's greatest physicists, an education visionary, and a pair of Stanford design professors all seem to be pointing toward the same set of principles.Creativity is not a gift possessed by a lucky few.It is a practice.It is a way of approaching problems, ideas, opportunities, and life itself.In this episode, I share eight creative practices that have had the biggest impact on my own work as a founder, advisor, podcaster, writer, speaker, software builder, and lifelong learner.The first lesson comes from Rick Rubin and *The Creative Act*. One of the most valuable ideas I've taken from Rick is the importance of showing up early and allowing ideas time to develop. Great work rarely appears on demand. Whenever I'm preparing a keynote, building a product, creating content, or solving a difficult client problem, I start earlier than I need to. I immerse myself in the work and then let it sit. I allow ideas to ferment. Some of my best work has emerged not from pushing harder, but from creating enough space for intuition and imagination to do their job.Elizabeth Gilbert's *Big Magic* offers another powerful reminder. Momentum is more important than perfection. I see perfectionism derail founders every week. They delay launches, delay decisions, delay customer conversations, and delay progress because they want everything to be perfect. The reality is that creative people create. They publish. They ship. They learn. Progress compounds. Perfection delays.Austin Kleon's *Show Your Work* reinforces this principle. Big achievements are usually the result of many small outputs shared consistently over time. Moonshots itself is a perfect example. The show didn't grow because of one viral episode. It grew because Mark and I showed up repeatedly for years. Small contributions, delivered consistently, eventually become meaningful bodies of work.Walt Disney reminds us to dream first and judge later. Too many ideas are destroyed before they have a chance to grow. Whether it's our own self-talk or feedback from others, premature judgement can suffocate creativity. Disney's genius was creating environments where imagination could run free before practicality entered the conversation. Creativity often requires us to suspend disbelief long enough to discover what might be possible.Ed Catmull, in *Creativity, Inc.*, extends this idea even further. He argues that unfinished ideas need safety. Great ideas rarely arrive fully formed. They emerge through discussion, experimentation, and collaboration. Teams that create psychological safety unlock more creativity because people feel comfortable sharing incomplete thoughts. Innovation depends on creating environments where ideas can evolve rather than be evaluated too early.Ken Robinson's work on *The Element* introduces one of my favourite questions. Rather than asking what your passion is, ask yourself what feels good. What activities energise you? What work absorbs your attention?

Walter Murch, one of the greatest film editors who ever lived, doesn't fix bad footage. He decides what the film actually is, from hundreds of hours of raw material that could tell a dozen different stories. Rick Rubin, one of the most successful and iconic record producers in history, famously describes his role as just listening. He sits on a couch, hears what's true and what isn't, and tells the artist. Artists pay enormous sums for that. Your clients now have the camera. They have the recording equipment. AI is giving them raw material faster and cheaper than ever before. What they don't have is the ear and the eye. The judgment about what to do with all of it. In this episode, I make the case that this judgment is where your real value lives, and that it lives in two places: before the work starts, and after it's done. Both are underpriced by most writers. Both are in growing demand. What You'll Learn Why the film editor and record producer are the right mental models for where your value sits in an AI-shaped market What "upstream judgment" actually means and why writers have been giving it away for free for years The specific decisions that happen before content is created that AI genuinely cannot make well Why the demand for downstream editorial judgment is growing as AI content floods the market How to identify where your judgment is most needed inside your existing client relationships Key Ideas & Takeaways 1. Your clients have the raw material. They need the judgment. AI is making content production faster and cheaper than ever. What it's not providing is the editorial eye that decides what's worth making and what's worth keeping. That's the gap you can fill. 2. The most important decisions are made upstream. Before a word gets written, someone has to decide what's worth creating, for whom, with what angle, and why. Those decisions require context that doesn't exist in any dataset: the client's internal politics, their buyer psychology, the competitive landscape, what leadership will actually approve. That's where experienced writers have enormous value they rarely charge for. 3. You've been doing advisory work your whole career. Every time you asked a clarifying question that changed a project's direction, pushed back on a brief that didn't make sense, or flagged an angle that wouldn't land with the audience, that was advisory work. It was just embedded invisibly in your writing process. The move is to make it visible and price it separately. 4. Downstream judgment is in growing demand. The more content AI helps produce, the more critical it becomes to have someone with real editorial judgment reviewing it before it ships. Companies that skipped this step are learning the hard way what it costs to publish without a quality filter. That's a real and growing opportunity for writers who position themselves as that filter. 5. You don't have to stop writing. Moving into judgment-focused work doesn't mean giving up the craft. Most writers who've made this shift still write. They do it alongside upstream strategy work and downstream editorial review that puts them closer to the decisions where the real value lives. Action Steps Think of one current client and ask: what decisions are they making before they produce content that my experience gives me an opinion about? Ask the same client: what content are they shipping that nobody with real editorial judgment is reviewing first? Write down one upstream service you could offer this client based on what you know about their strategy, their audience, and their blind spots. Write down one downstream service based on the content quality issues you've noticed in their recent work. Pick one of those two and draft a one-paragraph description of what it would look like as a packaged offer.
