To call Mike Shinoda a rock star would be technically accurate and yet incomplete. He is the lead singer and driving force behind Linkin Park (one of the best selling bands of the 21st century), Fort Minor (his hip hop project) and a thriving career as a solo artist. But that list of headlining achievements doesn't even begin to capture the scope of his creative versatility.  He's always been a creative omnivore since his days as an ArtCenter Illustration student when he divided his time between the painting studio and band practice. Even as Linkin Park soared to stratospheric success, he continued to multitask creatively. He continued to pursue solo endeavors (including a Grammy-winning collaboration with Jay-Z) while cultivating a diverse visual arts practice designing album covers and merchandise and assembling a series of paintings that have exhibited in major museums and galleries. But for all his myriad achievements, what stands out most about Mike is the unique quality of attention and intention that he brings to everything he does. We were only a few minutes deep into our conversation when it became clear that I was in the presence of a rare breed of artist who is uniquely curious about the mysterious forces at play in his own creative process. He gamely expanded upon his challenges and breakthroughs as a songwriter (with a vital assist from producing legend, Rick Rubin), his use of doodling to access certain parts of his creative brain and the twitch channel he's created to make things from scratch, in real time, often in collaboration with his audience. Les, Kurt, and Jason are all in agreement of a very bold opinion: Love Strikes Twice this is the best Hallmark Movie they've ever seen. (OK, Les thinks it's tied for 1st, but still…). But first, you'll need to listen to this podcast to find out about Blac Chyna screaming at an unvaccinated person, the avatar singing competition Alter Ego on Fox, and a very sad rabbit hole of bad reality shows from the past. Then, they guys get to really heap praise on a fantastic Hallmark movie that does not feature bad Mr. Saturday Night old people makeup or period specific pool floaties, but DOES feature time travel, an incredibly fun heist sequence, and confusion over whether super-producer Rick Rubin is part of it (he is not). Seriously, you should watch Love Strikes Twice b.    Facebook : alifetimeofhallmark Instagram : lifetimeofhallmarkpodcast Theme song generously donated by purple-planet.com

Broken Record with Malcolm Gladwell, Rick Rubin, and Bruce Headlam

Houston rapper Scarface is one of the most recognizable, respected voices in hip-hop. When he was just 17 years-old, Scarface was recruited to join Bushwik Bill and Willie D in the Geto Boys. The group was one of Rick Rubin's earliest rap signings for his post Def Jam label, Def American. On today's episode, Scarface and Rick reminisce about working together, and Face talks about how his recent experience with covid was eerily similar to his classic verse on “Mind Playing Tricks On Me.” Scarface also talks about the Miranda Lambert song that makes him yearn for his childhood Texas home. As well as sharing their thoughts on creativity, songwriting and their life experiences in the world of music, the pair speak openly about the inspiration and meaning behind some of their most honest tracks to date, while also demonstrating how they let the subject of each song help define its production. Jaden Smith has proved to be much more than just the sum of his famous parents. At 23 he's spent more than half of his life working as an actor, a musician, and an entrepreneur. Since the release of Jaden's debut mixtape in 2012, he has gone on to put out three studio albums that loosely follow a semi-autobiographical character named Syre who chases sunsets after a painful breakup. Jaden's latest album, Cool Tape Volume 3: Day Tripper's Edition, picks up with Syre's personal journey—but this time around set to a psychedelic-rock inspired soundscape.  On today's episode, Jaden talks to Rick Rubin about an ex-girlfriend who inspired him to embrace the classic rock from the ‘60s and ‘70s that influenced his latest album. He also explains how recording with live musicians—as opposed to building tracks digitally—brought a newfound energy to his project. What type of Macca apprecionado are you…a “Live and Let Die”-harder, a casual “Maybe I'm Amazed” fair-weather type, or an ironically distanced, “Check My Machine” troll? In this, the final installment of our “McCartney 3,2,1” deep dish, T.J. and Tony discuss episodes 4, 5, and 6 of Rick Rubin's “Hulu and chill” with Sir Paul, covering both his modern standards and less-celebrated obscurities. Chock-full of Beatle conspiracies and high noon standoffs, this episode will have you wondering: Which hit 80s sitcom theme did Julian Lennon secretly sing? How much did T.J. pay for a Spanish copy of McCartney's Unplugged LP at Sound Warehouse in June of 1991? Did Hulu use AI to make Paul sing “Got My Mind Set On You”? "Because we had to remember them." - Paul McCartney McCartney 3, 2, 1 This week Ibrahim & I continue our exploration of Rock 'N Roll with a look at the new 6-Part HULU docu-series, McCartney 3, 2, 1. For fans there doesn't seem a whole lot left to say about Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, & Ringo Starr, however the thrill of this documentary comes from an examination by one of the lads who was there from the beginning, as well as a world-renowned producer and fan of the music. It's a thrill to watch the excitement between Paul McCartney and Rick Rubin as they talk about the history of Rock 'N Roll, the band, the songs, and the walk through the cultural landscape of McCartney's 60+ years as a musician and recording artist. This is a fun, fascinating, and incredibly rewarding series. Mr. Chavez & I are thrilled to be digging further into this great music. Enjoy. Hey yo. We made Lazlo put on his TB12 hat before playing him some new Brady audio that we knew he would love. *Did you know people have jobs where they just ride the rides and visit the attractions at Disney? Not talking about crash test dummies, although that sounds fun too. These people just get paid to report back to their bosses on whether the rides are fun and what could be done to improve them. This got us thinking about the best jobs in the world and we found a few more we'd never considered. *CNBC put out of list of the worst states in America to live for 2021. We weren't going to discuss the story until we noticed a strange coincidence regarding several states in the bottom five. *Lazlo thinks The Beatles were the original boy band. Slimfast thinks Rick Rubin should put on some shoes. *Doomscrolling!!! Bezos stars in Billionaire Space Jam 2. The delta variant is getting worse and worse but Dollar General is getting into healthcare so we should be fine. A cyclist falls off his bike and into the tiny waiting arms of an alligator. A student pilot had to make an emergency landing in a field with no engines but he sounded calm as hell. Britney's back! And she's got a new lawyer this time! *Are people with kids happier than people without? Hard to say because most parents don't want to admit they regret having kids and most people who never had them try to act like it was a choice and not the lack of romance in their lives. *Tipping with pizza is the hot new trend on The Tok. *Back in my day, we asked people to donate to our kickstarter because we had a great idea for a board game. These days, kids are just writing their venmo information on the back of their car windows and asking for handouts. Kids these days are smart. *Q: Who's your favorite billionaire? A: Lazlo hates wizards. *Thanks for listening and being such a good friend. I feel bad because we did all the talking this afternoon and you barely got in a word. Tell you what, message us on Instagram and twitter @churchoflazlo tonight. We want to hear about your day too. -Everybody Wang Chung!!! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Broken Record with Malcolm Gladwell, Rick Rubin, and Bruce Headlam

Mark Ronson's big break as a producer came from working with Amy Winehouse to find the perfect sound for her career defining album, Back To Black. Since then, Ronson has gone on to win an Oscar, a Golden Globe and seven Grammys for producing chart-topping hits for artists like Lady Gaga, Adele and Bruno Mars. Ronson's sound is often associated with danceable, driving rhythm sections—which makes sense, considering his background as a renowned DJ.  In today's interview with Rick Rubin we'll hear Mark talk about the day he met Amy Winehouse and how she might've confused him for Rick Rubin. Mark also talks about the night he fell in love with DJing, growing up with his step-dad in Foreigner, and how being isolated from his studio during the pandemic caused him to think that his days as a pop music producer might be over.  Subscribe to Broken Record's YouTube channel to hear all of our interviews:  https://www.youtube.com/brokenrecordpodcast and follow us on Twitter @BrokenRecord You can also check out past episodes here: https://brokenrecordpodcast.com Check out a playlist of our favorite Mark Ronson tracks HERE. Broken Record with Malcolm Gladwell, Rick Rubin, and Bruce Headlam

BROCKHAMPTON's original members formed after posting on a Kanye West fan message board in 2010, and then started making music in The Woodlands, Texas. Since then, they've turned the idea of a boy band on its head. With as many as 14 members at times, BROCKHAMPTON's deconstructed the traditional pop star/rap ethos by being unapologetically inclusive of racial and sexual identities.  Today BROCKHAMPTON's frontman Kevin Abstract talks through the group's sixth and latest album, Roadrunner: New Light, New Machine with Rick Rubin. We'll hear Kevin talk about how the project slowly evolved from a pop album to something darker and more rap driven. Kevin also explains how supporting one of the group's members through losing their dad became the album's creative thrust, and explains why their next album will probably be their last.
