Darryl “DMC” McDaniels joins Chris DeMakes in this Throwback Thursday episode of Chris DeMakes A Podcast to unpack the story behind Run‑DMC's classic 1987 single, “It's Tricky.” DMC dives deep into the song's creation—recounting the writing sessions with Joseph “Run” Simmons and producer Rick Rubin, the fusion of hip‑hop and rock elements (including the famous “My Sharona” sample), and the recording process that helped shape its signature sound. He discusses the track's release, its impact on both hip‑hop culture and crossover appeal, and reflects on the song's enduring legacy—how its clever lyrics, brash production, and anti‑drug messaging resonated then and continue to influence artists today. The Art of Longevity
The Art of Longevity Season 12, Episode 6: Suede (Revisited)

The Art of Longevity

“I don't know where I'm going from here, but I promise it won't be boring.” Those words were spoken at one time by David Bowie, and thus are gospel to us here on The Art of Longevity podcast. Fortunately, some bands still live by that same philosophy. For evidence, we revisit the world of Suede. Suede has refused to become boring. Somehow, this band of 40 years have gone the other way - more exciting and visceral than ever. Suede are not hanging about to become their own echo! Albums like Autofiction and now, its immediate follow-up Antidepressants are not just the proverbial ‘return to form' type records. They are nothing short of a reinvention. Mat Osman, co-founder member with Brett Anderson and bass player, shares his views on the new Suede record:“It feels like Autofiction on steroids. If Autofication was a TV show, Antidepressants is the film version. We took everything more widescreen with this record”. However, for Osman - you can forget about that old cliche of a band making music for themselves and hoping the world will agree (that's what Rick Rubin has been telling us with The Creative Act: A Way of Being and to be fair, more than a few artists have told me it works for them. It's not for Suede. Instead, the band's creative mission has been guided by their fans - their reactions at live shows, to the band directly, but also the band's own interpretation of what a Suede audience really wants. “A band without an audience isn't a band. It's a hobby,” Osman declares. That emotional connection is Mat's affirmation - fan tattoos of favourite songs, tears at gigs, and stories about Suede songs at weddings. This fan connection is Suede's compass in the band's 4th career phase. And so we return to a key central theme of longevity; usefulness to people. “As I get older, those moments where someone says, ‘That song helped me,' mean everything,” he reflects. “That's what I'm proud of. There's a community feel [between the band and the fans] that becomes more and more important. It's evident from this ‘Revisited' episode, that Mat Osman and Brett Anderson have a fair degree of telepathy on many things - a shared vision that no doubt has added focus to Suede's current run of creative form. They even agree on the most ironic thing about where Suede has arrived; that they were the least likely band to survive in the first place. “Longevity is not something we strived for, it just happened as a side effect of our bloody mindedness and passion for making music”.They still have it. Season 12 of The Art of Longevity is Powered by Bang & Olufsen. In Episode #1,026 of the Clay Edwards Show, host Clay Edwards kicks off with technical glitches, sharing his early-morning foot pain—possibly gout or an injury from weekend activities—while soldiering through for two hours of raw commentary. The episode pays tribute to Ozzy Osbourne, who reportedly passed at 76. Clay recounts the moment he learned of Ozzy's death while at lunch, sparking memories of the rock icon's wild life: snorting ants on tour with Mötley Crüe, biting bat heads, and Jackson concerts in '84 and '96. He praises Ozzy's enduring fame, from Black Sabbath to Ozzfest, crediting manager Sharon Osbourne's genius in reviving his career and launching The Osbournes TV show, introducing him to new generations. Shifting to Willie Nelson, Clay admires the 91-year-old's ongoing tours, adapting songs with lower keys for authenticity. He suggests studying Willie's body post-mortem to explore long-term marijuana benefits, contrasting it with Johnny Cash's late-career Rick Rubin collaborations, like reinterpreting Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt." Local crime dominates: A chaotic interstate shooting on I-220 at Medgar Evers Blvd. left a 31-year-old man shot multiple times, with vehicles overturned—likened to Grand Theft Auto. Clay critiques Jackson's recurring violence, possibly road rage or gang-related, noting it rarely occurs elsewhere in the tri-county area, citing past incidents like a DJ's fatal shooting. In Canton, a potential hate crime unfolds: 33-year-old James Ross allegedly shot 47-year-old Troy Waldrop in the face at Camden Park Apartments over jealousy involving Ross's ex-girlfriend (Waldrop's niece). Clay attributes it to unchecked emotions, calling it the city's third murder, urging justice. Clay analyzes viral body cam footage from a Jacksonville, FL, traffic stop: A non-compliant driver, pulled for no lights and no seatbelt, locks himself in, demands a supervisor, and resists—leading to a window break, punch, and arrest for resistance and marijuana possession. He defends police, blaming entitlement and non-compliance, dubbing body cams "BLM's kryptonite." The FAFO (F***ed Around and Found Out) championship goes to 49-year-old DeShane Hamilton Collier of Jackson, arrested for public intoxication at a Pearl gas station. A pat-down revealed a Glock; as a felon with prior aggravated assaults, he pled guilty to firearm possession, earning 10 years without parole. Listener interactions include texts on traffic reports, a call from Kentucky's Mandy discussing positive police encounters and "Black fatigue" from excusing bad behavior with history. Clay emphasizes earned stereotypes, truth over agendas, and evolving the show with segments like local roundups. Wrapping up, Clay reflects on the show's growth, listener support, and balancing content with family time.

Dear Wonderful Readers,We did it! The first draft of The Sex Journal is done, and headed to the printers today! It's 140 pages long, so my estimate of 70 sheets at the printers was bang on. As I write this, I realize I'm probably going to regret not having any reader feedback before printing the first draft. Still, I look forward to learning that lesson the hard way when I return in August to examine the samples. It's not too late to sign up to be a beta reader of The Sex Journal! My offer still stands:* If you're a free subscriber, you can get 3 months of Misseducated's paid tier comped in exchange for your feedback* If you're a paid subscriber, you'll get a discount on the final journal once it's releasedI'll be back in late August with more updates about starting preorders. If you're truly dying to get your copy and don't want to miss a second of updates, you can respond “Preorder!” to this email, and I will put you on a special separate list.Share this with your favorite person…Let me just say, if there's one thing I've learned through this process, it's that creating a journal is WAY easier than writing a novel. WAY easier. It took me two years to complete the first draft of my novel, and 14 years to publish it. I completed the first draft of the sex journal in about a month. It's insanely faster. I'm grateful for that.A month ago, I looked at this pretty massive mountain in front of me and I thought: how the f**k am I going to do this? Well, it's been quite the creative rollercoaster, but somehow I pulled it together. For anyone who wants to try this at home, I'd recommend making your project your full-time job temporarily, picking an absolutely ridiculous deadline that you're not sure you can meet, and of course choosing to focus on a project that you are actually dying to do. I think the fact that I want this sex journal to exist and I have a seriously limited amount of time to create it before I go on holiday / run out of money has been the perfect recipe for getting s**t done. It enabled me to blast through any and all gatekeepers and limitations that were standing in my way. Now, I am not going to lie. I'm absolutely fried right now. I really wanted to write a funny, actually useful article for you today, but my brain is literally shutting down. On this home stretch, I've started sending emails to potential clients with spelling errors! For me, this is a small travesty and a sign. I can't go on.The good news is that I have SO many fun upcoming articles planned for you. Here are a few hints:* “My 5 Kinks and Why”: I want to revisit a classic topic and delve deeper into the quirky psychologies I developed in my childhood. Thank you, Freud!* “The Hot Gal's Guide to Sex in Mexico City”: Echoing my piece about dating Mexican men, I'm creating a guide for the girls, the gays, and the theys (à la Blakely Thornton) based on my experiences of living in Mexico City for three years as a single person wedged in the dating scene. This guide will be full of local lore that you can't find anywhere else, including which locations, bars, restaurants, and gyms you should frequent, depending on the type of person you're looking to bang. This piece makes me smile every time I think about it.* “We are the village”: This will be a more tender piece about how we can shamelessly support the young women in our lives with issues like sex, birth control, and healthy romantic relationships. I'll be coining an unscientific term of “life auntie”, a role which I've accidentally taken on. It's an ode to remembering that we matter when it comes to being there for younger people. It's also an antidote to the insanely uncertain shitstorm of the world right now, because it's a direct impact we can have on the lives of others and something we can control.* Do you have a burning question or a topic you want me to write about? Leave me a comment, a DM, or a quick response to this email, and I'll make it happen. The bad news is that I am indeed going on holiday for almost a month. You can expect the next Misseducated update from me on Tuesday, August 19th. I know that is an age away. I will miss you because I love writing this newsletter. But the truth is that aside from the week-long creative orgasm of my sex journal, I have been struggling creatively. This is because of at least two major factors:* I started using AI to help me edit my work. I started paying for Claude and ChatGPT, and while it's been helpful to tighten my paragraphs for clarity and make it easier to find research articles for The Sex Report, for example, I feel like I've lost the way. I'm obviously a bit of a writing purist, so I only use AI to help me edit my work, but still. I don't like the quality of the things I've been producing with its help. Looking back, I don't like it's ideas of what's optimal. I need to take time away from the internet. Luckily, I'm going to the mountains of California with literally nothing but my own thoughts to nag me for almost two weeks. It's the reset I need. Wish me luck.* I've started stressing about growth metrics too much. Just like the type-A Wharton graduate I am, or like anyone who's hooked on social media, I've been checking engagement, clicks, views, subscriptions, and all that crap of this newsletter for a few months now. I've noticed some trends as to what people like, but it's started to consume me. I've literally forgotten about the fun things that I want to write about. I've become too focused on the outcomes, as opposed to just enjoying the creative process. According to Rick Rubin, James Clear, and a variety of modern-day gurus, obsessing about the outcomes and the performance of your work is literally the worst thing you can do, for your work itself and your creativity. And I've got a pretty heavy case of the outcomes obsessions. Here are some relevant Rick Rubin quotes:“The best work is the work you are excited about.”“Your trust in your instincts and excitement are what resonate with others.”“If we second-guess our inner knowing to attempt to predict what others may like, our best work will never appear.”And of course, it's all exacerbated by comparing myself to other Substackers! Social comparison is the worst. I still haven't learned my lesson. So a break from social media will also hopefully help me with that. The point is, I'm hoping a couple of weeks driving around in the Western United States, and retreating to the mountainous forests of Northern California, will help me remember why the hell I am doing this and what kind of writing excites me the most. I am not giving up.Anyway, I want to say a big thank you for reading and being here with me for this ride! Your support helps to keep me going, reminds me to keep learning, and keeps me honest in the process.I hope you all have a relaxing, creative couple of weeks, and I can't wait to connect with you again soon once I'm back!Lots of love,Tash

Even though Shimmer was praised by critics, Luna Halo left Sparrow Records and the Christian music industry before recording their next album due to creative differences.Barlowe replaced guitarist MacIntosh with his younger brother Cary Barlowe, Aaron Jenkins replaced bassist Brad Minor, and drummer Chris Coleman replaced Jonathan Smith, completing the lineup for the new Luna Halo.Rumors of an imminent major label deal began to surface in 2004, and a deal with DreamWorks,[2] was announced prematurely, but later proved to be untrue, after negotiations broke down. The band released another EP, Wasting Away (originally recorded as a demo for DreamWorks) and opened shows for artists Velvet Revolver, Hoobastank, Collective Soul, Ours, Needtobreathe and Family Force 5.In 2005, Luna Halo were signed to American Recordings and began work on their second album, Luna Halo. Originally scheduled for a Summer 2006 release, the album was plagued with delays. This was due to American Recordings owner Rick Rubin's departure from Warner Bros to Columbia Records. The album was finally released in late 2007.On November 13, 2012, lead singer Nathan Barlowe announced that Luna Halo would be playing their final show on December 8, 2012, at 12th and Porter in Nashville, TN. The Creative Act: Rick Rubin's 12 Rules for Creativity and Being Yourself

Growth Mindset Podcast

Ever feel like creativity is reserved for “real” artists? Rick Rubin's 12 rules say otherwise. They're for anyone who wants to live and create with more honesty. Rubin, the legendary producer who can't play an instrument, built his career by helping others strip away what's fake and tune into what's real. His rules aren't about being clever; they're about noticing, subtracting, and getting comfortable with discomfort. I'll share how Rubin's approach helped me stop overthinking and start making things that actually felt like me. Think of creativity as tuning a radio: your job isn't to invent the music, it's to find the right frequency. Notice inspiration everywhere—train yourself to be amazed by the ordinary. Make a mess first, judge later—let ideas breathe before you kill them. Change your environment to change your mind—move your desk, move your thoughts. Tune in to discover how to make your work (and life) feel more like you. ---- Advertisers BetterHelp The world's largest online therapy provider BetterHelp.com/GrowthMindset - 10% off 1st month Liquid I.V. There may not be a band on earth that is more invested in their own myth-making and Slipknot truly slide over the edge on this, their third record, as they clearly try to make something designed to make a little pop turn and capitalize on the success of Stone Sour, and all that comes with it. We've got constant talk of the bands' in-fighting, their inability to get the record done on time, their various battles with substance abuse, and they simultaneously love and hate Rick Rubin at the same time. Flute 360 | Episode 332: "Is It the Universe…or God? Rethinking the Creative Process as a Flutist" In this solo episode, Dr. Heidi Kay Begay invites you into a vulnerable, soulful conversation about creativity, faith, and what it truly means to be a modern-day artist. Inspired by the Flute 360 Accelerator's June book club selection, The Creative Act by Rick Rubin, Heidi reflects on how the book reshaped her understanding of artistry — and how viewing “the Source” through a faith-based lens revealed a deeper truth: that we are co-creators with God. This is not just a book review. It's a gentle nudge for any flutist who's been questioning their identity, comparing their path to others, or wondering whether their art still matters in a season of change or healing. Whether you're playing, podcasting, composing, writing, or resting — this episode will remind you that your creativity is still valid. Still sacred. And still very much needed. Main Points: Why redefining “the Source” as God can ground and deepen your creative process The lie that says “If I'm not performing, I'm not creating” — and how to rewrite that story What it means to be a flutist in a season of injury, recovery, or transformation How to release comparison and show up in your own artistic lane with joy and freedom Why your artistry counts — even if it looks different than it used to How the Flute 360 Accelerator creates a space for flutists to reflect, grow, and connect Resources: Book: The Creative Act by Rick Rubin Join the Flute 360 Accelerator Program: Click Here to Enroll – Tier 1, 2, or 3 Subscribe + Review: If you loved this conversation, please subscribe and leave a review. Whether it's tackling a long thru-hike, getting into crafting, or diving into 1970s landscape art (Dyana's latest obsession), curiosity is your greatest teacher—and it'll always point you in the right direction. In this episode, Ian Dench of EMF joins the show to discuss the writing and recording of the band's explosive 1991 hit, “Unbelievable.” From its instantly recognizable hook to its genre-blending sound, the song became a cultural phenomenon and an enduring stadium anthem. Ian offers a look behind the curtain at the song's construction, including its layered instrumentation, unique pre-chorus, and the clever use of samples—most notably the shout of “Oh!” lifted from Andrew Dice Clay's stand-up album. He also recounts how a chance encounter with Rick Rubin at a New York restaurant led to Rubin casually granting sample clearance with the words, “Fax my office in the morning.” The conversation explores the emotional and musical influences that shaped the track, the challenges of creating in the analog era, and how personal experiences and playful experimentation helped fuel the song's unforgettable energy. In this episode, Lij Shaw chats with Ben Sabin, founder of Trace Audio, about his journey from Shangri-La Studio with Rick Rubin to wiring up some of the best studios in the biz. They dive deep into the mystical world of cables, the magic of patch bays, and why good studio wiring is like rock ‘n' roll feng shui — get it right, and everything just flows! Ben shares cool stories from his intern days, working with legends like Neil Young, and the hard-earned lessons of studio troubleshooting. They break down balanced vs. unbalanced audio, why your patch bay might be sabotaging your creativity, and how to future-proof your studio setup. Plus, if you've ever wondered how to avoid a spaghetti mess of cables, this episode is for you! Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Ben Sabin. He got his start at Shangri-La with Rick Rubin, where he saw top artists and engineers work at the highest level. He then split time between Shangri-La and Groove Masters, helping rewire tie lines, patchbays, and converters—sparking his passion for cabling and studio workflow. He also worked alongside legendary studio tech Pat Schneider on servicing and repairs. In 2018, he helped LA producer Colin Cunningham set up patchbays and streamline his growing outboard gear collection. He then worked in live sound, gaining hands-on troubleshooting experience. In 2019, he founded Trace Audio, focusing on CAPI gear and custom cabling, relocating to Nashville, where it's now a full-time business serving top industry clients. Ben also rewired my studio, The Toy Box Studio, and I quickly saw how much we could learn from him—so I had to invite him on the podcast to talk about creatin the best setup for your studio. Joined by a16z General Partners Anjney Midha and Erik Torenberg, the group dives deep into: How Rick became a meme for Vibe Coding —and then quickly wrote "The Way of Code"Why AI is just another artistic toolRemix culture, creativity, and collective consciousnessWhy great founders and artists need to stay true to themselvesWith shout outs to punk rock, the collective unconscious, and Johnny Cash's famed acoustic sessions, this conversation is a sprawling, soul-searching journey across music, philosophy, tech, and truth. The AI Breakdown: Daily Artificial Intelligence News and Discussions

Legendary music producer Rick Rubin joins NLW on The AI Daily Brief for a singular conversation about creativity, technology, and how a meme turned into something much deeper. After unexpectedly becoming the internet's unofficial mascot of “vibe coding,” Rubin leaned into the joke—and emerged with a profound new collaboration: The Way of Code, a Tao Te Ching–inspired, interactive living book co-created with Anthropic and Claude.Read "The Way of Code" - https://www.thewayofcode.com/They explore why Rubin, famously a non-technical producer, sees alignment between ancient philosophy and generative AI; how vibe coding democratizes creativity and expands taste; and why he believes AI won't replace artists—but might help us see differently. The conversation spans Jay-Z and Johnny Cash, orchestration and intention, and how great art often begins where certainty ends.If you've ever wondered what the future of creative collaboration looks like—or what happens when Rick Rubin writes a book about something he doesn't understand—this is the episode for you.Get Ad Free AI Daily Brief: https://patreon.com/AIDailyBriefBrought to you by:KPMG – Go to https://kpmg.com/ai to learn more about how KPMG can help you drive value with our AI solutions.Blitzy.com - Go to https://blitzy.com/ to build enterprise software in days, not months Vertice Labs - Check out http://verticelabs.io/ - the AI-native digital consulting firm specializing in product development and AI agents for small to medium-sized businesses. The Agent Readiness Audit from Superintelligent - Go to https://besuper.ai/ to request your company's agent readiness score. The AI Daily Brief helps you understand the most important news and discussions in AI.
