After 13 years of marriage, Bethany Meola admits that she and her husband can get caught up in their busy lives. They are raising three children and they both have careers. So, they make sure to take time every day for a six-second kiss. The six-second kiss is a daily exercise suggested by couples therapists John and Julie Gottman. It is as simple as it sounds. They say taking time each day for a six-second kiss can help connect you physically and emotionally with your partner. “It's kind of a funny thing to put on the to-do list,” Meola said. She first learned of the exercise while studying for a master's degree that centered on marriage and family.“把这个放在待办事项上有点好笑,”米欧拉说。 It made a difference, Meola said. “It's long enough to kind of ground you and say, ‘Here's this other person that I love, that I've committed to.'” Why does six seconds matter? Married in 1987, Julie and John Gottman co-founded the Gottman Institute to teach couples therapy. John Gottman also wrote *The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work* and other books. John Gottman told the Associated Press that six seconds is not just a number. It comes from studying more than 3,000 couples over 30 years. The Gottmans found that a six-second kiss is enough to help release oxytocin. Oxytocin is a natural substance that is produced by the body. The substance is widely believed to help a mother connect with her newborn baby. The Gottmans say it also builds trust in a relationship by calming down the fear center of the brain. They also used research by neuro-economist Paul Zak. Zak suggests that a 20-second hug creates the same results. “For the 20-second hug or the six-second kiss, it's one that really feels different. It feels like you've come home,” John Gottman said. Julie Gottman said a long kiss works best for couples who are committed to each other and who trust each other. Couples who are working through personal or marital issues might not be ready for it. But how do you start this type of exercise? Couples have to decide to take time out of their day to put their relationship first. One partner might open the discussion by saying they believe the exercise could bring them closer and it is worth a try. The experts suggest creating a ritual. For example, set aside the same time every day when both are about to leave for work or just before bedtime. Creating a ritual prevents a relationship from becoming one in which the only thing a couple does together is add things "to their very long list of tasks,” John Gottman said. “We want to really nurture the romance.”约翰·戈特曼说,建立一个仪式可以防止关系变成夫妻唯一一起做的事情就是往他们冗长的任务清单上加项目。“我们真的想要培养浪漫。”Rituals also create a shared sense of purpose, Julie Gottman said. However, she reminds people to enjoy it. Do not think of it as something you are supposed to do.朱莉·戈特曼说,仪式还可以创造一种共同的目标感。然而,她提醒人们要享受这个过程。不要把它当作一件你应该做的事情。And to the couples who say they cannot find the time? She is direct and honest.至于那些说找不到时间的夫妇?她直接而坦率地说道:“You really don't have six seconds?” “You know, we're not talking six hours here. We're talking six seconds," she said with a laugh.“你真的没有六秒钟吗?”“你知道,我们这里说的不是六个小时,而是六秒钟,”她笑着说。

James Hipkin is passionate about sharing solid digital marketing strategies with business owners and entrepreneurs. His approach is meant to demystify digital marketing for your listeners so that any company can take advantage of digital channels to take their business to new heights.James' career began in a bit of an unconventional way (which, of course, means that he has some fantastic stories!). He graduated college with a degree in music and his marketing career journey actually began in the rock and roll industry (most influentially with a little Canadian rock band called Rush). He eventually transitioned to advertising and marketing in South America, Spain, and Chicago. As a digital marketing expert, he has worked with well known names like Wells Fargo, Apple, Nestle, and Visa, but today, his passion is helping small business owners grow their business by utilizing their most valuable online asset, their website. One of his topic areas is Six Ways to Engage Website Visitors in Six Seconds or Less. It's a stimulating and value packed conversation about UX principles and how an entrepreneur should think about crafting a website that creates value for their customers. He also wants to help the small business owners and entrepreneurs in your audience avoid the trappings of unnecessary spending with a jargon-free, no-nonsense, practical approach. His goal is to see business owners succeed to share the hard-earned lessons that he learned over those 40 years in marketing. The reality is, most business owners do not tend to be marketers and are, quite frankly, often taken advantage of by some digital marketing companies. They spend valuable funds and resources towards digital assets that fail due to an absence of strategy. What's more, some of the products and services that businesses are pushed to pay for are completely unnecessary. You can learn more about James via his podcast expert guest page: https://inn8ly.com/expert-podcast-guest/ as well as see some examples of past podcast appearances by visiting his press page: https://inn8ly.com/press-room/ .Join my private FB group: Mastering Presentation Secrets! The Doctor offers a complimentary strategy session at TheDoctorOfDigital@pm.me.https://swellai.com/?via=mick-the-doctor-of-digitalOn Track Ian Hunterhttps://www.amazon.com/dp/1789523044?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_WOLGDN9AD6UWV1H4EG8OBurning America: In the Best Interest of the Children?Mick, The Doctor of Digital, Smith mick.smith@wsiworld.comBurning America: In the Best Interest of the Children?https://burning-america.comAmazon: https://www.amazon.com/G-Mick-Smith/e/B0B59X5R79Also at Barnes & Noble, Walmart, and TargetLeave a message for The Doctor of Digital:https://podinbox.com/thedoctorofdigitalpodcastInstagram: burningamericacommunityPatreon burningamericacommunity:https://www.patreon.com/SmithConsultingWSITheDoctorofDigitalPodcastListen, subscribe, share, and positively review The Aftermath:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-aftermath-the-epidemic-of-divorce-custody-and-healing/id1647001828Substack:https://micksmith.substack.com/Commercials Voice Talent ||https://www.spreaker.com/user/7768747/track-1-commercialsNarratives Voice Talenthttps://www.spreaker.com/user/7768747/track-2-narrativesDo you want a free competitive analysis for your business?https://marketing.wsiworld.com/free-competitive-analysis?utm_campaign=Mick_Smith_Podcast&utm_source=SpreakerMake an Appointment:https://www.picktime.com/TheDoctorOfDigitalBe sure to subscribe, like, & review The Doctor of Digital™ PodcastSign up for the Doctor Up Your Life courseFacebook || Instagram || Twitter || LinkedIn || YouTubeConnect on LI! It's one of the longest episodes of the show ever, and how could it not be when we're discussing an album that so perfectly captures the strange gap period between nu-metal's brief dominance and butt rock's eventual takeover, Saliva's "Every Six Seconds". It's clear this was a band that was unashamedly shooting for the rafters of stadiums, going so far as to write a 90s alt-rock jangle-pop song in the middle of an album that also has "Click Click Boom" on it, a song clearly designed to be on movie soundtracks. A band that got famous by doing everything they could to become famous, we look at some of the more insane lyrics the genre has ever featured, we learn they got their start by coming second in a Grammys-sponsored nationwide battle of the bands (?), and it appears that if they had their way, they actually might've been a Christian band (???). Hey, it's just a secular world, man, and we're all living in it. In today's episode, we explore the fascinating topic of emotional intelligence and its profound impact on business performance. We'll uncover how understanding and harnessing emotions can drive success, productivity, and effective decision-making within organizations. Our guest, Joshua Freedman, one of the world's top experts on leveraging emotional intelligence for business performance with 25 years of experience, is a co-founder of Six Seconds—the world's first global nonprofit dedicated to growing EQ. And in addition to being the leader of the world's largest study of emotional intelligence, called State of the Heart, he has also published six validated assessments, 5 books, and an incredible library of business cases and articles. Join us as we discuss strategies, real-life examples, and practical tips for leveraging emotional intelligence to unlock your team's potential and drive business growth. The episode starts with Joshua explaining what emotional intelligence is and using emotional data to help us understand ourselves and guide us towards where we want to go. How it's about accurately acquiring emotional data and effectively using it. He talks about how the feedback you receive from other people is what determines the accuracy of your data. Joshua shares his experience with a journalist who visited the school he was working at to introduce to them the concept of emotional intelligence, which piqued the interest of a lot of people who started asking how it can be used. This led to them starting an organization in 1997 to answer that question, the question of how we can practically use emotional intelligence in our lives. The organization eventually grew into having programs in 150 countries from people of different unions, sectors, and companies now certified in using their methods and tools. He talks about how they have learning tools that can help people from whatever level of familiarity you have towards emotional intelligence, even children. Joshua Freedman is the co-founder and CEO of Six Seconds, a global non-profit dedicated to teaching people how to use emotional intelligence (EQ). He is a master certified coach, an instructor for Columbia Teachers College Summer Principals Academy, and for Antioch University. He is also the author of 5 emotional intelligence books, including the best-selling At the Heart of Leadership: How to Get Results with Emotional Intelligence. Show-Notes:“Emotional Intelligence is about getting this emotional data and using it to effectively solve problems.” [9:56] What is emotional intelligence? What is it not? EQ expert Josh Freedman dispels the myths and explains how emotional intelligence is more than just being nice and positive. There is not one single way to be emotionally intelligent; there are many ways to find resolutions—confronting, ignoring, and working through—all of which are unique to the problem and other emotional factors. “When people feel more anxious and isolated, they move into more primal reactions… This kind of tribalism is part of what we're seeing in polarization, not just in the US but all over the world.” [20:22] Josh comments on the problems and difficulties caused by these tribal reactions, as seen in the decline of EQ in the last two years. It's hard to love, to lead, to collaborate… Making the presence of EQ more valuable and important than ever before. “I'm not saying change who you are; I'm saying use who you are and use it better to get the results you're really looking for. Not just short term wins.” [27:28] We all have the ability to learn and grow. It may take time and maybe be a big shift, but Josh says with work, it is possible. And as Marcel says, you need to exercise those emotional muscles, to create new synapses and increase emotional intelligence.“[As leaders, we need to think], let me understand what's going on for this person or this group of people and figure out what's going on and how we can overcome that so we can work together and get results.” [35:14] There is no denying that there is a great generational difference in EQ. Josh dives into the research of State of the Heart, where he explains that post pandemic the younger generations, Gen Z and Millennials experience the greatest loss in connection. This creates a big emotional barrier at work, especially when generations are coming into the same place of work on different playing fields.“EQ values have to become part of the DNA of how you work.” [38:22] Okay, leaders, you're all in and ready to invest in the EQ of your organization… Josh tells you what not to do, slap a training on the sign or haphazardly invest in an external coach. While coaching and training are important, Josh and Marcel agree that the values and actions of emotional intelligence must be reinforced and become ingrained in the organization.“That little pivot from I to WE (I'm seeing this; how can WE work on it?) will totally shift your conversations around performance and motivation.” [42:16] Josh has a practical tip for leaders on employee motivation. You don't have to sacrifice performance for EQ; instead, you will find greater performance. The key is to think….are we leading tasks or are we leading people?Mentioned in this episode:State of the Heart EQ ResearchSix Seconds Six Seconds | LinkedInSix Seconds (@6secondseq) on InstagramSix Seconds (@6secondseq) on Twitter Six Seconds on Facebook

Neurodiversity and podcasting. Two of my very favorite topics. On this episode of Think Inclusive, I speak with Carolyn Kiel, who is an experienced instructional designer of employee training programs. On her podcast Beyond Six Seconds, she features neurodivergent and disabled entrepreneurs, creatives and advocates who shatter misconceptions, break stigma, and showcase the vibrance and diversity of these communities. Here's what I cover with Carolyn Kiel in this episode: 1. The meaning behind the title of her podcast, Beyond Six Seconds, and why she made the leap into podcasting five years ago. 2. What it has been like to be diagnosed with autism later in life. 3. What she hopes educators learn by listening to neurodivergent people. RiverLogic: Tools to Transform Resistance: Interview with Denise Blanc We have the capacity to soften resistance and support more ease in our communication with anyone- but we will need intention, courage, and willingness to build more vital skills. How Denise Blanc describes herself – I believe that outstanding leadership requires courage – the courage to be authentic, not always to know the answer, and the courage to speak the truth. It also requires the ability to manage relationships, navigate social networks, influence, and inspire others. This understanding is rooted in over two decades of working in Organization Development as a leadership/team coach, facilitator, mediator, and internal senior leader. Whether coaching CEOs, executive directors, engineers, physician leaders, or their teams, I provide practical tools to tackle tough conversations, harness a growth mindset, and create high trust/high-performing cultures. Consulting in both healthcare, high education, and business industries, my key areas of focus include leadership/team development, emotional intelligence, equity & positive change, and conflict transformation. Over my career, I have been the chief architect of three leadership academies (serving 800+ leaders) from Supervisor through C-Suite, all providing a shared language and the skillset to lead across multiple sites and disciplines. While at the St. Joseph Health System, I was the recipient of several awards for leadership design, “best practice for developing future leaders” and “The International Spirt at Work Award.” I hold a BA in Psychology from the University of Colorado, and an MA in Health Education from JFK University. My background includes certifications in Conflict Resolution and as an Emotional Intelligence Coach through Six Seconds at the ACC level. I have advanced skills interpreting various industry-recognized assessment instruments including Six Seconds Emotional Intelligence tests for leaders and organizations, DiSC, Enneagram, Gallup Strengthsfinder, The TKI Conflict Assessment, and numerous 360 feedback assessments. I have trained extensively with the program “Crucial Conversations.” For the past five years, I have taught programs on social justice and race identity for both healthcare and within Shambhala, a global Tibetan Buddhist organization. If I had an indigenous imagination (maybe even a little part of mind) and I was dedicated to defending the Earth but I was exposed 8 hours a day to TikTok, would my activism survive? Would I be able to focus on the toxicity in the investments of fossil banks, and dramatize this crime? Environmentalism was at once based on eloquent essays. Ecological conscience was grounded in research, impactful data and graphics. But now most of the public doesn't notice such things. Now we are addicted to the little screen. We are "liking" the changes in the faces of Colbert and Gaga and celebrities judging America's Got Talent. We are "liking" someone wearing a costume that makes him look like a green bush. He is disguised, standing still in this perfect likeness of shrubbery, and he suddenly jumps in the path of a pretty woman. The surprised passerby screams and falls to her knees. This is hilarious. The bush helps her to her feet and she is trying to smile. Where does such a communicating style put our activism?
Our Emotional Intelligence – our ability to be smarter with our feelings and to be able to leverage this understanding to help us make better decisions – correlates with success factors like effectiveness, relationships, well-being, and quality of life. In other words: It's important. Today we're speaking with Joshua Freedman, cofounder and CEO and founder of Six Seconds about generational differences in Emotional Intelligence and what this means for leaders at work and society at large. Topics include: The surprising difference in empathy scores between men and women. The importance of collaboration, connection, and sense of community to emotional well-being and what it means in a hybrid work environment. If it's possible to have a successful, perpetual, super hard-core work environment.
On this episode we talk with two team members who are in the apprenticeship program to become guide dog mobility instructors (GDMI's).

In this episode, you'll also hear:The only way to push through roadblocks in your writingReflection on the Langston Hughes Poem “A Dream Deferred”Valuable reminders for when you don't feel like continuing to writeWhy you should “expect the impossible” as a Christian writerThis episode is part of the Christian Authors Network global speaking competition, Speak Up. Click here to learn more and stay up-to-date on the competition!Charity Goodwin: Make Today Your Day OneWhich of these is a problem for you? Writer's blockNot enough time You started the book, but you're yet to finish itYou have an idea, but you haven't put pen to paper or hands to the keyboardWell friends, there is one solution to all of these, and that is to write. Yes, it's easier said than done, but there are no shortcuts. The only way to do it is to go through it — and for us writers, “through it” is writing. So today, let's connect, reconnect, group, and regroup, so we can get back to — or start — writing that dream book, the next blog post, the social media content, or whatever it is God has inspired in us. Is Your Dream Deferred?Philippians 1:6 speaks about how God who began a good work in us is faithful to complete it. That work in us was the idea, or the dream, or the desire to write and eventually, perhaps, write a book. But what happens when we don't move forward, or we stay stagnant on the idea or the dream? Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes in his poem “A Dream Deferred” gives us insight into what happens when a dream goes unfulfilled. He writes: What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore— and then run? Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over— like a syrupy sweet? Maybe it just sags like a heavy load. Or does it explode? The Harlem Renaissance poet speaks to a dream that doesn't come to pass, and perhaps you know what that feels like. You have this dream, this desire, on the inside of you. But you may be feeling crusty and cranky, and maybe even a little stinky! These may be signs that we have deferred that which is in us. That which God has planted in us. Now it's in us, friends, but it's not just for us. God has planted these gifts, and this dream, and the desire in us, but it is for other people. This book, this blog post — all the things we do — are for others. And there are people who are waiting on you. They are waiting just to hear what you have to say. So write! Write your way through it. Write OnWhen I was in the fourth grade, I had the honor of meeting Maya Angelou. I had heard her speak and had read her books, and I was so excited to meet her. I had written a poem in fourth grade about people who I admired, and she was one of the people in the poem, on my list of “The Greats,” if you will. When I showed her the poem, she silently read it. And then she signed it. She autographed my poem. And on it, she wrote: “Write on.” There is something about sitting down and continuing to do what we do and be who we are — which for us is being a writer. So write on, even just for one minute. Write on, even if it's a table of contents or a journal prompt that has nothing to do with anything else that you're trying to write. Write on by writing a letter to the audience, to the people for whom you are writing. Just write a letter to them and allow yourself to feel and to express how you feel about them. Write on, and get in those chapters. Get into the nitty gritty. Or maybe just write what feels easy right now, in this moment. Write a sentence, write a phrase, write a string of words, whether or not they make sense. Make an offering of your writing to God. God Will Extend What You HaveIn 1 Kings, there's this little story that I love, that my grandfather would tell often in his own sort of vernacular, about the widow who was met by Elijah. And he asked her to make him some bread, a little cake. And my granddaddy says that it was cornmeal, in his estimation. So she had a little bit of meal and some oil, and it wasn't enough in her mind to go very far. But God, through the prophet Elijah, says, “If you make this meal, there will be more than enough.” And so she does, and it all lasts. It goes on and on.Just taking the first step — taking a little bit of time, writing just a little bit — as we do that, we can expect that, in the same way that God extended the little bit of flour and oil, God will extend in us the words to say and to speak. So expect the impossible. It might feel like there's nothing there now, but take just a moment, and God will expand what you have. So timeout for saying, “Someday, I'm going to finish it. One day, I'm going to make it. I'll make some time to get it together, finish it all up, do the next thing, or start.” Instead of “one day,” make today your Day One to completion. Joshua Freedman is the CEO and founder of Six Seconds, the largest global network dedicated to emotional intelligence. In this podcast interview, he discusses his vision of leadership and how it has transformed over the years. He talks about how each organization needs to decide what it wants to optimize for, and how this will determine the culture that is built within the company. Freedman explains that emotional intelligence is a key ingredient in successful leadership, and that in order to achieve his vision of a world where emotional intelligence is widely practiced, he needs to build an organizational culture of ownership. This allows people to feel invested in the company and its mission, and ultimately leads to better results. Freedman argues that in order for change to happen within an organization, those in charge must be willing to change themselves. He believes that too often, senior leaders expect others to change without first taking responsibility for their own role in the problem. Only by confronting the reality of the situation and committing to change can performance improve. Joshua also discusses how emotional intelligence can be used to improve one's life and career. He also recommends exploring his website for more information on emotional intelligence, including assessment tools and development courses. Finally, he suggests taking advantage of the new coaching elearning course to help support people who are facing difficulties.
