Moroni, finding himself still alive, gives guidance to members of the future Church of Jesus Christ about a few critical aspects of a church, choosing to focus on the power to give the gift of the Holy Ghost, ordaining and calling teachers, the sacrament, baptism, and meeting together. In a world where COVID has forced many of our normal church activities online, we discuss the limitation of virtual church and the importance of having physical experiences to further our spiritual growth. June 28, 2020 Our study last time left us with a cliff hanger. Jesus has revealed God's desire for mercy and not sacrifice to the Pharisees. Then, he showed them why he is not interested in doing all of the fasting and sacrifices that the Pharisees command. After that, we see him showing mercy and compassion to all different kinds of people. The Pharisees respond to this with a statement that explains how unmerciful they had become, saying, "He casts out demons by the prince of demons." Jesus goes on teaching and healing, but his words in verse 36-38 are essential for our study. Matthew 9:36--38 (ESV) --- 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38 therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” Jesus sees these crowds and knows that they are wandering around harassed and helpless. They need a good shepherd to take care of them. But then, he also speaks with another figure to his disciples, saying, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few." These sheep are ready to be gathered, but he gives his disciples the impression that he cannot do it alone. They will need to pray that God will provide them with laborers to share the load and gather the harvest. What will God do for these lost sheep, and how will he do it? Jesus Gives Authority (1-4) Matthew 10:1--4 (ESV) --- 1 And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction. 2 The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. It has been interesting to see how God gave Jesus such great power and authority in the last two chapters. Now he gives that authority to twelve disciples. Isn't it also interesting that Matthew hasn't described the background of all twelve disciples? The first four were described back in Chapter 4. Otherwise, Matthew only describes his own calling. His focus has been on Jesus for nine chapters. These twelve men seem to be from many different walks of life. We are not told that they have any credentials for the work Jesus is giving them. So why would Jesus give them such power and authority? What makes them worthy of this? We have no idea. They were ordinary guys as far as we can tell. Maybe that's the whole point. What's really odd about this is that Jesus is setting up these guys to answer the prayer that all of the disciples were just praying. How many of us pray for people to come to the Lord without ever considering God wants to do that through us? Jesus had them pray for laborers. Then, he chose 12 laborers expecting God to give him what he was praying for through these 12. Sending Them Out With Instructions (5-15) The next four sections are about Jesus preparing his disciples for this work. He gives them instructions, sets their expectations, calms their fears, and tries to correct their misconceptions. Matthew 10:5--15 (ESV) --- 5 These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, “Go nowhere among the Gentiles and enter no town of the Samaritans, 6 but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7 And proclaim as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay. 9 Acquire no gold or silver or copper for your belts, 10 no bag for your journey, or two tunics or sandals or a staff, for the laborer deserves his food. 11 And whatever town or village you enter, find out who is worthy in it and stay there until you depart. 12 As you enter the house, greet it. 13 And if the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it, but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. 14 And if anyone will not receive you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet when you leave that house or town. 15 Truly, I say to you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town. These verses indicate that Jesus was very strict in his instructions. These disciples were going through a limited training course. Jesus commanded only to proclaim the gospel and heal the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Jesus commanded to refuse payment for the blessings they receive from God Jesus commanded to take no supplies with them and rely entirely on the Lord to provide their food Jesus commanded to seek out someone worthy in each town, give them peace, and stay with them until they finish. Jesus commanded to take away peace and reject those who are not worthy and those who will not listen to the gospel message. They will be judged more harshly than Sodom and Gomorrah. All of these instructions show that Jesus wants him to do the very same work that he is in the process of doing. He does not want them to go off and do their own thing at this time. They are still in a training phase, and he doesn't want them to bite off more than they can chew. All of these instructions show us that he understands their need for spiritual growth. He starts them out with what they are familiar with. They just need to keep doing what Jesus has been doing in front of them. What patience and what an example of good teaching and mentorship. He does not expect more of them than they can handle. Setting Their Expectations (16-25) Matthew 10:16--25 (ESV) --- 16 “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. 17 Beware of men, for they will deliver you over to courts and flog you in their synagogues, 18 and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them and the Gentiles. 19 When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. 20 For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. 21 Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death, 22 and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 23 When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next, for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes. 24 “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. 25 It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household. In this section, we see Jesus giving them the unfortunate side of his mission. This job is not half as glamorous as it appears. I love how he grabs their attention with the word "Behold" at the beginning of this section. This is extremely important. They must understand that they are sheep amidst wolves. There are many out there who are looking for an opportunity to devour them. This is something that we would not expect when men heal others and preach the good news of the kingdom. Why would anyone reject their message and all of the good they are going to do? Serpents and Doves Jesus says that they will need to be wise or shrewd as serpents. Typically serpents are given a bad image since Satan was described as one in Genesis. But Jesus is pointing to the cunning nature of evil and trying to get his disciples to think one step ahead of them. This is not an encouragement to do evil, though. Notice that he immediately follows with a desire to maintain their innocence like doves. White doves were a symbol of purity. They need to consider the path that will be most beneficial to their work while remaining pure and righteous before God. Persecution Described Then, in verses 18-20, he tells them that when they are delivered to courts and forced to testify. This is not something we read about until after Jesus ascends into heaven, but he is trying to help them see the nature of evil around them. Verses 21-22 let them know that those who they trust most will turn against them. They can expect to lose family for their beliefs and allegiance to Jesus. What a sad statement. Following the way of truth and reaching out to the lost sheep of Israel will not guarantee their family's salvation. But it will ensure the salvation of yourself. Comfort Giving his disciples the expectation that wolves will surround them might scare them, but he comforts them by saying that God will be with them when they testify. He will send his Spirit to speak through them. In verse 23, he tells them that it is perfectly fine to flee from persecution. They aren't out there trying to be martyrs for the cause. The goal is to spread the good news and bring the lost sheep back to God just like their teacher and master. The final verse of this section guarantees that they will be maligned for speaking the truth and trying to help people. People will not like to hear that Jesus is the Messiah and that they must repent of their sins and follow him. Calming Their Fears (26-33) I imagine all of the disciples were rethinking their decision to do this after Jesus sets their expectations. So he again comes in with reassurance. Matthew 10:26--33 (ESV) --- 26 “So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. 27 What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. 28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30 But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. 32 So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, 33 but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven. Jesus tells them to have no fear three times in this section. He wants them to know that they can speak everything that they have heard from Jesus and condemn the evil of the world around them. If people try to do evil and hide it, it will be revealed. If people try to speak against the truth, they will be exposed as evil. Instead of being afraid of the world, Jesus tells them to be fearful of God judging them for concealing the truth, denying Jesus, and allowing the lost to stay lost (28, 33). God loves them and cares for them while they remain faithful. He can provide everything they need. But if they betray him, they can expect to be denied in heaven. This is a startling statement that no one likes to think about. It should bring to our minds Peter's denial of Jesus on three occasions. Fighting Misconceptions (34-42) Matthew 10:34--42 (ESV) --- 34 “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. 36 And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household. 37 Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 40 “Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. 41 The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. 42 And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.” The final section on helping the twelve with their work restates the expectations in another way to make sure that they understand. Jesus' message of peace will not bring peace. People will not accept the peace he offers them, and as a result, they will be betrayed by those they love most in the world. The only way they will be able to deal with persecution is if they love Jesus more than they love their family. This is what it looks like to take up your cross and follow Jesus. It looks like finding life, but also losing the life you have previously known. It looks like giving up the old way of life for Jesus and finding a new life. This last section is intended to clear up any misconceptions they have about this work. It will be difficult, but this is the only way for the lost sheep of Israel to find the reward. People have to be willing to love Jesus and the truth more than they love their own lives and their own families. Application This whole section is describing the work of Jesus. He does not send his disciples out to do something that he is not willing to do. After we look at this, we might be tempted to think, "Who would ever agree to live a life like that?" But aren't you glad that people did? The willingness of men and women to leave their lives of luxury or comfort and seek the lost sheep has made it possible for us to find a new life in Christ. Notice how caring God is for his workers. God provided them with what they needed (10). He wanted them to leave when people reject the message (13-14). They were free to use wisdom and discernment to do what was most beneficial to them, but they were limited by what is pure and righteous (16). God promised to help them speak when they were put in intense situations (19-20). He promised salvation to those who endure (22). He knew they would not always be loved for the message, and he permitted them to flee when persecution was on the rise (23). Overall, he was not asking them to do anything that Jesus himself wasn't already doing (25). They had nothing to be afraid of except turning their back on him. The final words of encouragement in verses 29-30 bring up the birds and remind us that God is in complete control. He knows the number of hairs on our head. This is all interesting, but how does it relate to us? We are not given authority over sicknesses and the ability to cast out demons. Are we supposed to go to the lost sheep of Israel? Matthew 5:11--16 (ESV) --- 11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. 13 “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. 14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. The words of Jesus to his disciples are just a taste of God's intentions for us. Jesus calls all of us to shine as a light to the world as well. I know many of us don't feel comfortable doing that, but we don't get the impression that our comfort is essential. Comfort is an idol that replaces the will of God. This is about lost souls! As Jesus looked out and had compassion on the multitude of people who were utterly lost and confused by the religious leaders of their day, do we not feel any relation? How many people around us have no idea what the true gospel is all about? There are literally hundreds of thousands of unchurched people in Mobile County. I wonder how many of them have been given and believed in a distorted gospel. I wonder how many of them don't think they are smart enough to understand the Bible. I wonder how many believe that their sin is too bad for God to forgive. Thousands will mock and scorn, but what about the Matthews? We have developed several mentalities that I'm afraid God would disapprove of. We say, "I'm just too busy for that." Really? Are we too busy to help a lost soul find God? We say, "I'll let the professionals handle that. I don't have a degree in theology." Look at these disciples and tell me which one of them is qualified to share the good news. This is hands-on training. Maybe we say, "If I say something, I will just get rejected like always." If that's the case, we need to look a little harder at the phrase, "Be wise as serpents and innocent as doves." If everyone rejects the message, we need to be sure that we are humble and gracious as we speak. We don't know what the next person will say. Also, realize that Jesus does not sugar coat this. Even those who were friendly to him did not always obey the message. Most rejected it, but there was a Matthew. We don't need to be afraid of rejection. We need to be fearful of the Lord, who will deny us on the most important day of our existence if we live a life that denies him. We don't have to become a missionary going from town to town, yelling in the streets. But Jesus wants us to let our family and neighbors know whose side we are on, even when it is unpopular. We are here to shine as lights, and we better not hide our lights under a basket. 1 Peter 4:12 (ESV) --- 12 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. Conclusion This message hits home for a lot of us. Evangelism sermons always hurt because it is so against the grain right now in our society. I plan to begin an evangelism class on Sunday mornings that will start July 12. Please make plans to be there and help us equip one another for the work.

I see this week that the Prime Minister has had a go at the opposition or anyone who looks to criticise the governments response. Journalists have left all objectivity at the door as they swallow the government line that we all need to fall in behind this government's response.A fellow broadcaster on this station warned about not trusting business people or entrepreneurs on this because they have nothing to add here and are not 'experts'.The over arching message is - get your information from one source. Really? Are we Cuba? I don't think so. Why isn't a range of voices important at this time? Why is there not merit in an entrepreneur who cares deeply for their country, has the resources sometimes to throw money and time at research and maximum information? They're often people who're globally vested in the bigger picture, they think outside the box, and I would have thought, should not be so easily dismissed. I also think to say that any criticism of the government is 'politicising' the response, is in itself a manipulative political response. A bid to shut people down. We have every right to question how our government handles a crisis, especially when it involves lives. Every single country in the world dealing with this right now is questioning and challenging their government's responses. That's normal. We don't have to be sheep blindly led down one path, on the basis of the only 'experts' our government chooses to hire.I feel sorry for the opposition in all of this actually. Despite asking for collegiality and cross party support, the government is shutting them out of a lot of the information available to them. How can you truly ask and expect people from across the aisle to get behind you, when you won't brief them comprehensively on all your facts and advice and what direction you're taking? To truly expect full support, you have to share your knowledge and sources of info surely? So throughout much of this the opposition's hands are tied - criticise or question, and you're called irresponsible, or accused of politicising. But to say nothing is to have to assume you trust everyone involved in leading us through this, and to trust the advice they're receiving. Imagine if we'd done that with Kiwibuild. Finally I feel sorry for parents. This is a really tough time to know what to do. Schools are open, I'm happy to say unpatriotically, I don't think they should be. I know they're telling us the 'experts' are saying to keep them open, and they've got an official spreadsheet for schools on 'responses' and closing schools is not currently one of them.. but I think to be ahead, and move fast, and keep our numbers as low as possible, the next thing we should close, is the schools.

She is of Indian-British origin, now living in New York where OpenSponsorship is based. At age 34, Ishveen Anand already has a decade of experience working in the world of professional sports, but investors still doubt her when she pitches her sports marketing startup, OpenSponsorship. “I’m of Indian origin, I’m British, I’m female, I’m young,” she says. “When I walk in and I’m like, ‘Hey, we’re changing how brands work with NFL players,’ they’re like, ‘Really? Are you?’” Five years in, Anand is proving that her concept—a two-way marketplace that lets brands and athletes find each other for endorsement opportunities—can work. She’s also proving that she’s the right woman for the job: OpenSponsorship has been profitable since 2017, with revenue of $1.1 million last year, and recently inked its highest-profile client yet, alcohol giant Anheuser-Busch—all off $1.3 million in seed funding. Anand aimed to show profits as quickly as possible because, as a woman operating in a male-dominated industry, she knew that investors and clients alike wanted to see more from her than the potential for success. “Any room I get into, they’re always going to ask for another data point,” she says. “And I know I’m going to have to give it.” --Cameron Albert-Deitch- https://www.linkedin.com/in/ishveenanandPlease do NOT hesitate to reach out to me for any reason on LinkedIn, Instagram, via email mark@vudream.com, text me 508-925-0261!LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-metry/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/markmetry/Twitter - https://twitter.com/markymetryMedium - https://medium.com/@markymetryFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/Humans.2.0.PodcastMark Metry - https://www.markmetry.com/Humans 2.0 Twitter - https://twitter.com/Humans2Podcast

Today is the start of a new series, and we are calling it the awesome wonder of Christmas. Really it’s about worship. And the big idea is that we are looking at the Christmas story but we’re not focusing on the Nativity characters, except one. What does the Christmas story reveals to us about God, about who he is and what he’s like? And I am convinced that if we take a really good look at the Christmas story, like a really good look, it will cause us to do something maybe we haven’t done for a long time- be filled with awe and wonder, it will make us just go – wow! Now let me start here: How important would you say it is for us to be in awe and wonder of God? Like how important would you say that is? If I’m honest, there is a part inside me and maybe inside you that’s kind of like- Who’s got time for that? Like last week, as I’m preparing for this message, I was feeling like, I’m too busy to be in awesome wonder of God. I have a turkey to make, actually Rana made the turkey, but I had to support her. Who’s got time to awe and wonder? Because we value activity, and busyness, and performance, and something tangible... So how important is it to be in awe and wonder of God? In the book of Acts, chapter 2, is very famous passage about the early church, and normally we remember that passage based on all the cool things they did: they were devoted to the apostles teaching, they were breaking bread, they were selling everything they had and sharing it all. You know that passage right? But one thing that gets overlooked is not just what they did, but how they did it. The passage says that awe came upon every soul. In other word, everything they did they did from a heart that was in awe and wonder of God. Now how important was that? I believe all and wonder what is the secret sauce that brought all the things they did together. I mean imagine them just doing stuff for the sake of doing stuff. Imagine one of them going OK now we got to go to Bible study, and then I have to sell my house and give it to the church… No no no, all these things they did because they were inspired because they were lost in wonder of their amazing God, and the most natural thing to do was all the things they did… How important is it for us to be in awe and wonder of God? It’s like if you get one thing, get this, you get this and all else will follow. You miss this and it all become drudgery and busy work. Maybe that is why theologians say that worship of God is the highest form of human activity. To be lost in wonder of God is a human being at their very best! So when you wake up in the morning and you are tempted to skip devotions and just get busy. Maybe you can preach to yourself. You are not a human doing you are a human being. And our first and primary role is just to BE sons and daughters of the living God, who stand in awe and wonder of Him! Same thing during this Christmas season. Let’s make time to experience God! Can I get an amen? OK so what is in the Christmas story full of awe and wonder? And you don’t have to go too far before you start to see it. Share J I Packer’s thoughts… JI Packer in his book Knowing God shares about all the Christian doctrine that is hard to believe. He’s like some people find certain doctrine hard to understand: the atonement, the resurrection, the virgin birth, all the miracles that Jesus did in the gospels. Then he writes this- “but in fact the real difficulty… does not lie here at all. It lies, not in the Good Friday message of atonement, nor in the Easter message of resurrection, but in the Christmas message of incarnation. The really staggering Christian claim is that Jesus of Nazareth was God made man…” Packer is like of all the doctrines in the Bible the most staggering one is the Christmas story the Incarnation of Christ, the story of God becoming a human being! To be clear, it wasn’t Jesus becoming 50% human 50% God. It was Jesus fully God also becoming fully human. Someone put it like this: Remaining what he was, he became what he was not. Remaining God, he became a human being. All right that is a very big idea. Now if we’re going to unpack this in the right way we have to start at the right starting point which is… The greatness of God and then from there we’ll talk about the Incarnation. But let’s start at the Greatness of God. Have you guys ever been to Yosemite? Amazing, Amazing, once you go to Yosemite than you start to compare everything with Yosemite. Across from Curry Village is this meadow and in the middle of this meadow is a wooden dock that cuts right through it. And the first time I went to Yosemite as an adult was like 15 years ago, and the youth were like, Andrew when it gets dark we have to go to this meadow. So we waited until it was dark and then we went for a night hike. Got to the meadow and walked all the way down to the middle of this wooden dock and we all laid down. And we turned off all the flashlight so it was pitch dark, and we all looked up and it was like…Whoa. Not a cloud in the sky. All the stars came out in this beautiful brilliant dazzling display. And I remember thinking who has the creative energy to create all this? How powerful does a person have to be to create all these heavenly globes in their spare time? Isaiah 40:26 Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name; by the greatness of his might and because he is strong in power, not one is missing. Now before we unpack the Incarnation of God we first need to go to the God who created the galaxies who bring out each and calls them by name… This is how the first chapter of Matthew opens OK? The first chapter of the book of Matthew tells us that Joseph who was betrothed to Mary was thinking of quietly divorcing her. Because she was pregnant. Because he wasn’t the father. Verse 20 But as he considered these things, behold an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. So the angel tells Joseph that the human life growing inside Mary has come not from any human being but from God. Mary is pregnant by the Holy Spirit – what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit, so the real father is God. Verse 21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord has spoken by the prophet: “behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). OK boom. The identity of Jesus is even more clear and direct here. Matthew quotes from Isaiah Who says that a virgin will give birth to a son and they will call him Immanuel, which means God with us. You know, for centuries, Jewish leaders and scholars knew this prophecy but they never took it literally. They thought it was predicting the coming of a great leader and through their work and through their speaking, God would figuratively be with them. But they never took it literally, I mean like in human form, who would take that literally? But Matthew is saying this promise is greater than anyone imagined. That this son who is called “God with us“ is actually literally God coming down from Heaven as a human being TO BE WITH US! You guys Today the crazy awesome idea of Christmas is that this God Who created the stars and the galaxies. That the God who is bigger than the universe put himself inside a human body! That the Uncreated One who all things created depends on to exist…became…a created thing! What? Whoa! Now I know you guys know that, but can we just step back and look at this with fresh eyes? Like, Really? Are you kidding me? Like maybe you’ve been a Christian for a long time can you just imagine explaining this to someone who didn’t grow up in the church? Oh yeah God who created everything the earth the stars the galaxy yeah he became a human being. Really? BUT there is every more! Not only does he became a human being. But…but…he is born in a barn. And so they put him in an animal feeding trough. Really? Are you kidding me? God made Himself into a baby and that baby was lying in a feeding trough. Imagine being there. Right in the middle of the barn in a feeding trough… is God Now I didn’t have a feeding trough But I did have a box Imagine God putting himself in a box. Imagine if you were there knowing what you know, you could walk up to God and look at him in the Face. I mean in the Old Testament, often when people would have an encounter with God they would be really scared afterwards because they thought they were going to die. And here you could walk up and look at God right in the eye. You could pick God up in your arms. You could touch God. Like the person who was actively involved in creating all the stars and the galaxies is here and you are able to hold Him in your arms!! He’s a baby and he would need to be fed and he would need to be changed and that is like so weird. All right all of this is just shocking and staggering. If you really think about it. Why did God become a baby? Why in the world would God become a human being? I have heard that the equivalent of God becoming a man is like one of us becoming a piece of lint. Now I don’t know about you but when I was small my parents wanted me to grow up and become a lawyer, they wanted me to make a name for myself. No one wants to grow up and become a piece of lint. Why would God do this? Why? The book of Hebrews says that Jesus was made like us, “fully human in every way“ (Hebrews 2:17.) That means “because he himself suffered when he was tried and tested, he is able to help those who are being tried and tested“ (Hebrews 2:18). Because Jesus became a human being and suffered the way he suffered, it means that he is the one person in all the universe who can look at us and say, I know what it’s like. He is the one person in all the universe who can say I’ve been there before. I know what you’re going through. God became a human being, and if that wasn’t enough, He suffered the worst kind of suffering on the cross. He was torn apart in every way emotional spiritual physical. And because the infinite God suffered Jesus has an infinite power to comfort. OK let me put it like this. When you are hurting really bad, how would you like a really good friend to care for you? Or put it another way- when a really good friend is hurting how many of you struggle with knowing what to say? You’re doing a hospital visit, loved one is going through a lot of pain, and you don’t know what to say? Now if you’re like me you natural impulse is to to give advice. And some people have to learn the hard way. I had a friend Mitch who was going through a really hard time so I took him out for dinner and gave him what I thought was really good sound advice. Well done Andrew! and at the end of our time Mitch says to me- Andrew I really learned something today. I’m like, Glad I could help you! He goes I learned that when someone is hurting really bad you should just be quiet and really listen and really try to empathize. That’s what I learned today. I’m like Glad you learned...wait a second, I didn’t do any of that. Oh you’re trying to tell me, OK… That is not how we all feel. Like when you’re hurt and you want someone not to just spit out answers to be Bible answer Man you want someone who gets it. Who understands and feels your pain. Doesn’t just feel sorry for you but understands your experience… They know cancer. Or they know the loss of a loved one. Or they know how hard a certain career is. Or what it’s like to have cantankerous in-laws. Or have a best friends stab you in the back. They know what it is like. You you know what that feeling is like to have someone totally understand your mess and to just get you in that place. Why did God become a human being? Because by becoming a human being and by suffering the worst kind of suffering, Jesus can say to you and me I get it. I’ve been there before. I know the kind of stuff you’re going through! He can say, I am here with you! The Incarnation is God’s way of giving Infinite Comfort to all of us who are suffering. But, I would say, it’s even more than that. Why would the 2nd Person of the Trinity become a human being? Why would He leave the comfort and the glory of Heaven and become a human baby? To provide Infinite Comfort to all those who suffer, but I would say there are still more reasons, and I would like to close on one more. The Christmas Story reveals another thing about the very nature of God. Why would the Galaxy Maker become a baby? Why would cosmic power confine himself to an itty bitty living space? I think it has to do something with this. The very nature of God is self-giving love. The willingness of Jesus to give up His life on the cross is the same willingness He showed to come down from Heaven and become a human being. Jesus loved us so much that He gave us His very self. It wasn’t enough to send a prophet. It wasn’t enough just to give us a book. Jesus loved us so much that He gave us His very self. John chapter 1 verse 14: 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory The Greek word for dwelt literally means to pitch one’s tent. So imagine us in Yosemite looking up at the stars and the Person who made those stars literally comes down to pitch his tent among us. He pitched his tent to be with us What does that tell you about the self-giving nature of God? He loves us so much that is gave us His very best, He gave us Himself! My brother was dating Rana’s best friend Michelle for about two years. And he loved her so much and he knew that she was the one for Him. And so for a couple of months he was planning the whole proposal. And Rana and I were living downstairs from Michelle. It was a duplex. And he was like, Can you guys help me set it up? And so the big day comes, and Michelle drives across the Bay Bridge to drop David off at his apartment in San Francisco. And they say goodnight. And David runs to his car and he wants to speed past Michelle on the Bay Bridge to get to her apartment before she does. And He’s thinking, Oh, I hope she doesn’t see me! Meanwhile Rana and I break into Michelle’s apartment to set things up. Lighting candles and putting in place this big huge refrigerator box, OK? And then we hurry back home. David gives us a call. “I don’t think I’m going to make it in time. She is beating me to her apartment. You guys need to distract her.” We’re like, OK, OK. So when Michelle comes back home, we’re like, Hey Michelle, Why don’t you come over for a little visit? She’s like, Uh, OK. So she comes in and we’re talking. And I’m not kidding you, all the sudden my brother comes in upstairs. and it sounds like a herd of elephants. Michael is freaked out like what is going on upstairs in my apartment! We’re like, It’s not David, OK? Oh that’s John the landlord who is fixing something up there. Yeah. We saw him. You should go up there. Michelle goes to her apartment. Opens the door. There are candles everywhere. And right in the middle of her kitchen is a big refrigerator box with a big bow on top of it. And she opens up the box, and there is my brother and later that night her proposes. In effect he says, I want to be with you for the rest of my life. Because when you really love someone You will give to them your very self. You want to be WITH THEM. Who is this God who made the galaxies and then is willing to come down and put himself in an animal feeding box? He is Immanuel which means, God with us! Because when you really love someone You will give them your very self You want to be WITH THEM. This is your God! He is a manual, which means God with us

Explore Your Enthusiasm, with Tara Swiger | Craft | Art | Business

It’s mid-November, the holidays are upon us, so I wanted to check in - how are you feeling? REALLY? Are you feeling scrambled or stressed or depressed or anxious? Let’s talk this week about how to stay emotionally and mentally healthy during this busy season in both your business and your life. I’m not a mental health professional or a doctor. I am your big sister or best friend who is here to remind you to take care of yourself. If you want to hear more about my own mental health adventure, check out episode 123, where I first opened up about my lifetime struggles and suicide in our community, and episode 153 about a year leater, where I share what was working for me in managing it. I’ve also got a Mental Health Checklist in episode 241. This isn’t self-care, this is self-maintenance. Like giving your car gas and changing the oil isn’t extra, it’s part of keeping it running. (I don’t know enough about cars to make this metaphor any bigger, but you get it right?) These tips are in order of importance for my mental health and based on what I’ve read, I bet it’s important for you too. Be realistic with your schedule and get it on paper. Get it all out of your head. Don’t try to keep track of it. And don’t agree to do too much. This includes in your personal life and your business. It is SO EASY to get excited about holiday promotions and commit to doing big crazy launches and new products and extra shows, but NOW is the time to step back and look at how it all fits in your calendar - do you have the time off you need? Do you have a production plan so you’re not staying up till 3 am every night? And hey, those handmade gifts you have planned - are they realistic? The more realistic you are, the saner you will feel navigating it. Wash your hands. Getting the flu on top of everything else going on is the worst. The most-effective way to avoid the flu is to wash your hands. I know you know this, but make it a habit that everyone washes their hands when they come into your house. I’m gonna link to my favorite handwash (affiliate link) from doTERRA that isn’t drying and is naturally antibacterial. If you’re feeling panicky, splash with your face with cold water. This does something to your nervous system and resets it. Wake up at the same time. I once read a mental health researcher say that we would understand more about mental health diagnoses if we thought of them as circadian rhythm disorders. The worst thing for your mental health is to get too little or too much sleep. You can’t always control this by going to sleep at the same time, but you can control getting into bed at the same time and waking up (and getting out of bed) at the same time. This is very important if you’re changing time zones. If you want to hit the ground feeling good, start to shift your bedtimes before your trip. Since I’m usually flying west, I just get up really early while I’m there, go for a run in the morning and then go to sleep early (my family never minds, but it’s harder to do at a conference). Have a hard time falling asleep? I have a few favorite tips:  Take a warm bath and get in bed with lots of blankets for 20 minutes. A study found this was effective at reducing depression! It’s my favorite! I never read business books in bed. The more boring the better. I use essential oils and supplements to help me sleep. My go-to is Copaiba, which works on your nervous system in the same way CBD oil does but more effectively (and without all the risk of weird additives). Take your vitamins and your meds. Everyone I’ve ever met who takes meds for mental health doesn’t want to take medication. They want to go off it. But friend, the holidays, or any time when you’re traveling, seeing more people than usual, or even just shipping way more products than ever, it is not the time to change your medication. Move your body. I know, I hate to go out in the cold, but just focus on getting your steps in and not sitting all day. I use my watch to tell me to stand up every hour, but you can also set a timer on your phone or computer. Say no when you need to. Seriously. One of the keys to staying mentally stable is to not overdo it, and this is the season of overdoing it. Everyone does and seems to be proud of themselves for doing too much and being “busy”, but let’s start a (quiet) revolution of NOT doing everything, of telling people no, of staying in and resting when we need it. Your assignment - Pull out your December calendar and look it over. Put everything in it that you’ve committed to. Look at your production calendar (if you haven’t made one, make one, we talked more about this in episode 282, getting your shop ready for the holidays). Ask yourself:  What do you need to say no to or cancel? What looks good and exciting? Where are you feeling enthusiasm? Where can you do more of that? Come tell me how you are staying well this season, on Instagram. I’m @TaraSwiger and I would LOVE to hear from you - DM me what you are doing or what you learned from this episode. Next week is Thanksgiving here in the States and I am sharing my FAVORITE books I’ve read this season. Be sure you’ve subscribed and tune in to get ideas for what you’ll read over the holidays. I wish you a peaceful and enthusiastic week and happy holidays. Links* to my favorite products: Naturally antibacterial handwash For sleep: Serenity in the diffuser (this works like a charm with kids) Serenity softgels (1-2 before bed) Copaiba softgels (1-2 before bed if you have back pain or headache) Learn more about using essential oils for healthy nighttime habits here.  During the day: The vitamins I take daily The natural supplement for energy at a cellular level (a MUST with kids!) *These links are affiliate links, which means I earn a percentage of the sale when you purchase through my link. I am NOT recommending ANY other brand of essential oil, because they are not food-grade safe, nor tested to the same level of purity, or with the same sustainable practices as doTERRA. Don’t buy cheap oils at Walmart and expect to have similar results.   Listen in at TaraSwiger.com/podcast285

He everybody! Welcome to Ep 25, Car Chronicles - You are Enough! I was in Santa Monica this weekend with an old friend and as I was driving back late yesterday afternoon I decided to record this weeks episode with the thoughts that were heavy on my mind from all of the events of the weekend. I have heard the ringing from women and even some men that they have this deep seeded belief that they are Not Enough. I am here to tell all of you, male or female, this is a Lie and you are More than Enough! We all seem to get ideas in our head, a timeline our life should follow, and if we don’t hit those benchmarks, we area failure or can’t move onto the next phase. What moments in your Iife haven't gone as expected? they made you who you are today so you wouldn’t want to change them. I love that God has a way of humbling us or showing us that we Really ARE capable of handling yet one more thing on our ever growing to do list. Find that internal desire to help the world, yourself or your family and just turn up the volume until it drowns out the others. Why doesn’t the perfect time exist? Well think of all of the excuses you tell yourself for not doing something. What are they? Most of the time they are something like; not enough time, money , work too much, not working enough, no experience, don’t know where to start. I guarantee there is a solution to your excuses. You just have to do a little digging. think of a time that life something at you and your initial thought was “I’m not ready”. And you know what you did when you realized you gotta do it one way or another? You made it work nothing anyone does is going to always be pretty or perfect. Real life is full of learning experiences some call mistakes. My challenge for you this week is to 1. Let go of your written in stone timeline and understand that it is on paper and will get rewritten, and rewritten, and rewritten, and rewritten. 2. Start blasting your own voice with your dreams in your head, not the one saying you can’t do it or deserve it. 3. When life isn’t going picture perfect… just go with itAnd adjust from there. Its easier to try and slowly change directions of a boulder rolling down a small hill than to completely stop_ it and push- it back up. Hey, what's going on everyone? It's Steve Larsen, and welcome to Sales Funnel Radio. It's kind of a special, unique episode. I've spent the last four years learning from the most brilliant marketers today. And now I've left my nine to five to take the plunge and build my million dollar business. The real question is, how will I do it without VC funding or debt, completely from scratch? This podcast is here to give you the answer. Join me and follow along as I learn, apply, and share marketing strategies to grow my online business using only today's best internet sales funnels. My name is Steve Larsen, and welcome to Sales Funnel Radio. What's up, guys? Hey, I am here at the JW Marriott over in Phoenix, Arizona at the Traffic Secrets event. It's been a ton of fun to watch Russell go in and teach traffic, which is interesting, I mean think about it... The dude's running an almost near billion dollar company and doesn't know how to run a Facebook ad... BUT he's doing a traffic event. The perspective of somebody like that that's really, really interesting. And so the things he's been teaching have been quite fascinating. The trip here though was pretty crazy: We're getting on an airplane, I was flying to Salt Lake. We get on this airplane at Salt Lake and everyone goes and they sit down obviously it's a full flight, totally loaded up.The time for us to take off comes, and then it goes, and we're still sitting there. The plane hasn't even moved at all. Pretty soon the captain comes on like all cliche captains; you know, "How you doin’ everybody?" It sounds like the microphone is in his face. Anyways he goes, "The update is that there's no update. I'll tell you when there's an update." I was like, "Okay, that was weird." A few minutes later, he gets back on and says, "Hey look, the luggage guy was filling up the airplane and there was a huge bulge coming out of the side of the airplane. And no one can figure out what it is. The maintenance guy is here and they can't figure out what it is... so we'll give this a few more minutes here. We'll see what needs to happen." And he leaves, and we're all just sitting there like, "What on Earth?"... And it's funny because a few minutes later he comes back on. (We now should've taken off like, 20-30 minutes ago.) "Hey, no one can figure out What the heck the bulge is coming out of the side of the airplane. We've got to get off and change airplanes. It will probably be another 10-15 minutes because that plane's not even here yet... go to gate C10." Those kind of scenarios are always fun because that is when adults turn into children, right? People start doing things like, "Oh, are you serious, ugh!" I was like are you freakin' kidding me? Like, "Let's see, Alive? Or dead with bad plane? Alive? Dead with bad plane?" It was like, "Come on, are you serious? What are the alternatives here? There's not many alternatives. Not many options. Chill out." Anyway, super funny! So I get to the actual event and last night, at like 5:00 a.m. somebody pulled the fire alarm for the entire JW Marriott - which is extremely alarming to wake up to! It reminded me of several basic training days. It's like "Whoa!" You wake up real fast  and you're like, "What's up???" And again, it's when adults become big kids and start complaining like crazy. I'm not saying you can't ever have a negative feeling towards things that are going on in life, but there's been this pattern that I started seeing in my coaching, and things that are going on in life. I'm not saying not to feel emotions, but holy crap, if you can't handle something unexpected in life, and react to it well... If you can't be response-able - "able to respond," like the book 7 Habits of Highly Effective People says... If you're not response-able I don't think you're gonna be a good entrepreneur. The set of problems that I woke up to today was different (and not foreseen) to the problems I woke up to yesterday. And that's the game of freaking entrepreneurship. So many people get so mad about stuff like, "Well, I didn't think it would be this way." "Give me a refund, this kind of treatment is unacceptable..." I'm like, "Really? Are you kidding? You could die." Like, "Shut up you big baby. Literally, you're a big baby." ...I always laugh at that. I'll be coaching somebody, and I'll be like, "Alright, hey, now it's time for you to start publishing," and they'll be like, "Oh man!" And they start doing all this crap... "   “Are you freaking kidding me? In the last episode, I talked about  Cash causing frameworks, and you're not willing to do it?  Holy crap!"It was interesting because I was sitting listening to Myron Golden... You know, I was doing my One Funnel Away Challenge stuff. I got up early, I went into the event room. No one was in there, just a few people setting up. I did my One Funnel Away Challenge coaching. Which is a challenge where I help people get a funnel out the door in one month...I wanted to sit around with the lights, and I wanted to sit around with all the noise and the music in the background and do my coaching right there...(Sorry, there's a big something coming. I'm gonna walk this way.)...But it was interesting because Myron Golden walked up. And he goes, "Dude, I just read the most impactful book that I've ever read in my life since Expert Secrets." And when somebody says a phrase like that you know it's time to shut up and listen... He said,  "It was a book called You Squared."  It's not long. It's actually a super short book, and I believe the audiobook is on YouTube for free. I'm excited to go listen to it.) But the basic principle and premise of it... (Sorry for the sound of that guy right there. I'm trying to walk away from him.) ...The basic principle of it is this, and it's so funny because this is exactly what I've been noticing is the reason people don't have success.  They don't have success simply because they're so fixated on seeing beginning to end. Myron walked up and he said, "The reason people are not successful yet is because... (There were several things that he said but the biggest thing that I remember...) He said, “The biggest reason they're not successful yet is because they have not decided to be yet." And you might be "Okay, okay, I've got it, and that doesn't sound very deep." But just think about it right? "They haven't decided to be successful yet." The word decide means to make an incision and cut out all other options. *Bird song*(What's up birds? You sound cool.) ...If you decide to be successful, you don't care what the paths are. You don't care about the roadblocks along the way. You don't care what things you're gonna hit. There's going to be unexpected stuff. The reason I wanted to be an entrepreneur, when I started realizing what marketers really do, is because I had an early mentor of mine tell me, "Stephen, to be a marketer is to solve new problems every day that you did not have the day before." To be an entrepreneur is to have a new set of problems every day. If you have an unexpected thing that pops up in your life and you're like "Oh wah, are you serious? This is unacceptable. How come no one told me about this? The startup guide didn't include this piece for me."  Man, you are the freaking problem! Does that make sense? It's the way that you're seeing this thing. You haven't married the outcome yet. #Step one: You figure out what you want. You put a stamp out there - stamping the ground. "Bam, this is what I want." You declare it, "This is it. Boom, this is what I'm going for." And then what you do is you just start taking steps. The most common thing I see that stops people in the game is this... In order for you to actually totally get this I want to tell you a little story real fast okay? I'm not that big of a hunter, but I love to shoot guns. Growing up, my dad took me hunting a couple of times. I love shooting .30-06. I like shooting big, heavy rounds. He's a lefty and I'm a righty. So I'd go out with this .30-06 with the bolt action on the opposite side which was really weird when you fired. We'd go out to this little spot. He gets me up super early, you know. It's way before the sun is even out. It's pitch black, it's freezing, and we go up to these super high mountains, and we get out of the truck, and we start walking for a little bit. Then we'd stop, and sit down. I can't see a thing.  I mean it is like pitch, pitch black. I can't even see my hand in front of my face; it's so dark.I'm sitting there and it starts to get super cold. When the sun is about to rise is when it is the coldest because all the cold starts to rise as the sun kinda chases it off the ground. So you're sitting there for hours, and because you're not moving, it starts to get super cold as all that cold starts to come off the ground - and you know the sun's about to come up in a little bit. And sure enough, a  little bit of light comes. If I extend my hand all the way, I can see it now. As we're sitting right there suddenly, the light starts to pop up just a little bit. And there's actually a peak, on the opposite side of where I'm sitting. I didn't even know it was there. The sun just barely hits the top of the peak. It was beautiful, it was absolutely amazing. The sun keeps going up, and the line where the light is popping up keeps going down, down, down, down. Suddenly I realized, we are sitting on the edge of this gigantic, beautiful valley. This huge, amazing valley. I had no idea it was there. I sat there for hours while I watched this thing pop up. And that experience always stuck with me. (I did not get an elk that day, which sucks but someone in our party did.) Anyway, so this principle I want you to know is like the major core mentality that all successful entrepreneurs have... I don't know what step #4 even is for me right now. I don't, okay? I know the macro level moves I'm moving. But there's a crap ton of micro things I don't even know exist, that I've never had to deal with yet. That I've never had to solve... But I know how to learn. I learned how to learn. There's this amazing person who knows everything named freakin' GOOGLE. And I can just go there and I can Google. It's gonna be right there. I can go to this amazing individual called YouTube. And you know what? I can learn so much on YouTube. It's insane how much I can learn on YouTube. Most of my early clients, I knew that what they were asking me to do was possible, but I didn't know how to do it. I knew others were doing it, but I didn't know how to do it. So what does that mean? It means I'm the variable. So I would go out, and I would say, "Yes, client, I can do X, Y, and Z for you." Then I would go to YouTube, and I would figure out how to do it. Literally, that's how I actually started. I did that a ton for years. Having to have a deliverable forced me to learn quickly. Forced me to learn only the most valuable pieces I needed to move the ball forward... The 80% that mattered versus the 20% to perfection. Don't worry about that last 20% okay? I don't care what step four is for me on this micro level. I don't care about it until I've taken step three. I hardly even know how to put my foot down in step two right now. That's the whole point though, okay? Most of the time, I've noticed... this is like the overlaying pattern I've seen. There's really two things that I've seen when I'm coaching somebody new in this game. I've now brought well over 2,000 people through this process of building a funnel and getting it out the door. The first mentality I've noticed is that people are waiting to take action for them to see beginning to end. Man, I didn't see the whole freaking valley forever. Hours, and hours, and hours of sitting there freezing my butt off, uncomfortable stuff okay? You never see beginning to end in this game, you don't. One other thing real fast on that: Stop learning generally. I've said that before on this podcast. I'm just saying it again, it's just on my mind. All these things wrap together again. It's like, "Man, I've got to stop learning generally. If I don't need SEO, why in the heck am I learning it?" For me to place the very next step I need to take today, do I need to learn SEO? Most likely not, right? Most likely I don't need to put my foot right there. There might be some other crazy, crazy thing way down the road, and even then I'm not gonna be the one doing it. Why on earth am I gonna study something like SEO? If it's your thing, great.. but only if it's the very next step you need to take. It would shock you guys how much I don't study books. It would shock you guys how much I don't just consume crazy amounts of podcasts anymore. It was good at the beginning. It was great, but as soon as I knew what I wanted as soon as I knew what I was going for it all became about learning with the intent to place the very next step in front of me. I don't care how much other cool information is out there. It doesn't do anything, okay? Knowledge is not power, knowledge applied is power. And so I'm gonna apply it with the most intense force that I can with just the next thing. So I practice "Just in Time Learning." I place my foot down, Bam I just learned just for that thing just in time for me to place that foot in the next place. Funny enough, as soon as I take step number one, a new step three always appears. It kinda comes into the light just a little bit. Not clearly, but then there's a new step one. I'm like, "Oh, okay. Let me place that foot  as best as my foot can be placed." Boom, there it is. "Oh, let me place a new foot down, Boom. Ah, wait, I don't know how to do that. That's okay, let me go read about this on YouTube."My foot's off the ground. I'm not placing the foot yet, foot's still up there. Let me go see, oh, okay I know how to place that one. And pretty soon, you start walking at a pretty brisk pace. And the better you get, you start to sprint, you start to run. Some of you guys have said "Stephen, you haven't even been graduated from college for three years yet. How the heck are you doing that?" That's how. I don't just learn for the sake of freaking learning. I learn for me to go towards the goal. I don't care about the path it takes to get to the goal. It's gonna look like that okay? Stop waiting for it to be straight. Doesn't work like that okay? So again, first thing I noticed from people is they want to see beginning to end. Doesn't happen that way, okay? Doesn't happen that way. You come to me, and you try and find anyone that it's happened that way for. The second thing: The number one  excuse that I get for not taking action is "Stephen, well how does that work for my product?" Man, freaking-A alright. If you're selling anything or you're getting leads, I don't care if the point of sale is on the freaking internet or if it's off of it. I don't care if you're just trying to make contact a little bit... but if you're selling anything, anything... I don't care if it's your product or if it's somebody else's. I don't care if it's info, if it's real estate it's real business, if it's brick and mortar stuff. I don't care if it's B2B, I don't care if it's retail... If you're selling anything at all these are the principles that make things sell. It doesn't matter if it's your product. Doesn't matter if it's someone else's product. Doesn't matter if someone else owns it. Doesn't matter if it's affiliate, okay? Guys, oh my gosh that one freaking drives me nuts... Stop thinking you're unique. You are way less unique in your business than you think you are. It's not a bash, it's the truth. My stuff, there's like a 30% area where it's my pure genius. The other 70%... Man, who was it that said, "If you think you're a hot shot, just look around and realize you've been standing on the shoulders of giants all along"? It's some quote like that. That's the truth.   That's the truth that you gotta understand. You are not unique. You are unique, but I'm saying your business, your product, it's not really that unique. You're not really that much of an exception to what I'm talking about because you're not at all, okay? So don't think like, "Oh, I've got to see it from beginning to end." First of all, that's garbage, no one follows that. No one follows that. It was literally the night before we sold the original Two Comma Club Coaching program that we actually outlined the offer. People were registered for the thing. People were ready, we already did the first full day. It was the second day, the night before that second day where we actually, "Okay, what should we sell them?" Just move, start swinging the bat. Too many of you guys have been focused on figuring out what the material of the bat is made out of. Who cares! Swing, Swing, Swing! Swing, and realize that you are NOT this like crazy exception to the things we're talking about, you're not. "Well, I think my scenario is different." Bull crap, Bull crap! I'm gonna make you feel uncomfortable and call that right now. That's a lie, and it's been a lie that you've been romancing so that you won't have to take action. What I've noticed is that in each one of my coaching programs it's always usually around anywhere from week two to six that's where I get the most push-back because those are the places where I force people to take the most action. So they start doing things like "Well, how much time does it take the average person to do this?" That's a symptom of you having a belief you're literally trying to find a way to release yourself from the good pressure you're feeling. You're trying to find a way to NOT do the thing and keep your pride on the way out. "Well people said that it takes about three months, and I only have two months and two weeks, so I'm not a good fit." You're trying to find a way to keep your pride and exit at the same time. Just saying, done it a lot. I've coached thousands of people through the process now. "Well Stephen, I don't know, how do you actually go create the product?" Man, I guaran-freakin'-tee if you just go out and freaking Google that you're gonna find the answer. If I start answering every person's little, tiny, baby question that could have been answered by Google! I  teach you to be a self-solver. My goal is to teach you a level of self-dependency. I want you to be self self-sufficient. There's a ton of stuff I can teach on all these different things, but the problem I've found is that people will use it as an excuse to not take action. Or they'll use it as an excuse to try and keep their pride and justify their actions or their inaction for doing things: "Well Stephen, I can't see beginning to end." "Well Stephen, I don't think that this is gonna be..." "I don't think my product and my scenario Is a fit for what you're talking about." Yeah? Bull crap! Garbage, not true at all.  A little tough love Stephen Larsen coming out right now because I'm so sick of people using those excuses. And I'm getting sick enough of it that I'm gonna get pretty forward about it. I was coaching this morning for the One Funnel Away Challenge in the event room again. (We're just on a break, so I'm gonna go back in here in just a few seconds.)   ...But someone asked like three times "Well I just don't know how this works for affiliate marketing" or  "Well, I'm in MLM so it's not really that way." "Well, I'm in retail so it's not really that way." I was like "Ugh freaking-A!" I'm talking about sales -  this is human psychology. Do you have a brain? Yes, you do. So does that person, and that person. Everyone in the audience does. These are things and principles that cause human persuasion and action in general.   You are not an exception to the rule. You are way less an exception to the rule than you've romanticized. And I'm just saying it because I care about you guys. You are my audience, I protect you like crazy. That's my mentality. A lot of people want to get on the show or stuff like that and I'm like "Meh, NO!" Because you guys are my tribe. I've sacrificed like crazy to try and reach out to you guys so you can hear my voice and my message. And so that's my message today: #1: Your business is way less an exception to the rule than you want to think it is. #2: Don't think you need to see beginning to end. #3: Understand that these really are frameworks that cause cash. #4: The variable, if somebody else is doing it successfully... if somebody else is out there making it happen, but you're not - then you're the problem.Something in the way that you perceive the framework is the problem. It's coming from your head, between your ears. Just telling you a little tough love. I appreciate you guys, you're amazing. If you have appreciated this episode and I spoke some tough, hard truth in this one - so I would love your honest feedback. First, we're gonna put this on YouTube - then we repurpose it for lots of other platforms so you guys to consume on those platforms if you want to. It's Zach with Living Corporate, and yes, you're listening to a B-Side. Now yes, we've introduced the purpose of a B-Side before, but every episode is someone's first episode. So for our new folks, B-Sides are essentially random shows we have in-between our larger shows. These are much less structured and somehow even more lit--that's right, more lit--than our regularly scheduled shows. If you don't know what I'm talking about when I say more lit, watch this. Sound Man gonna give me some air horns right... here.[Sound Man complies]Zach: And then the beat's gonna change and drop right... here. Now, look, this particular episode we have a very special guest, okay? This guest is named Emily Miethner. Emily is a public speaker, a networker, social media subject matter expert, a consultant, and perhaps most notably she is the CEO of FindSpark, a certified women’s-owned business enterprise that connects employees to top diverse early-career talent and has produced more than 250 career programs and cultivated an online and active community of over 30,000--that's right, three zero, 000--young professionals and top employers including HBO, BuzzFeed, NBC Universal, L'Oreal, Showtime, Grey, Bustle, Ralph Lauren, and Univision, inspiring career optimism in diverse young professionals around the world and empowering them with actionable career changing tips and tools. Now, listen folks, before I even get Emily on the show, you heard me say all those names. You know I'm gonna get at least a couple of those names with Living Corporate. This is crazy. You see these names? Y'all hear these names? Anyway, Emily, welcome to the show. How are you?Emily: I'm doing really well. It's Friday, so I can't complain too much. Zach: That's right. Now Emily, talk to us about FindSpark. Where did the name come from and how did y'all begin?Emily: Absolutely. So we actually went through a name change. So our initial name used to be NY Creative Interns way, way back in the day, but that gives a little sneak peek into the inspiration behind starting it. So I was a creative young student myself at one point, and really during my college years is when I realized that there really weren't a lot of great career resources out there, especially ones that focused on networking and building relationships. And I found that to be immensely powerful and important in my own career even just starting out looking for internships and my first jobs, and so I knew that I wanted to create something that really emphasizes the importance of creating a strong network for yourself early on and also to create actually fun and enjoyable experiences in ways for employers to connect with talent and doing it in a very inclusive way where everyone can feel welcome, whether it was their, you know, first time networking or millionth time networking. And so I took the skills that I had in then planning and social media, and that's what I really used to start FindSpark and create these experience for people of all different backgrounds to get a better understanding of all the different types of career opportunities that are out there and get, you know, better access to them, regardless of, you know, where their starting point is.Zach: That's amazing. So as I mentioned in your introduction, and I hyped it up, but I don't really think it was hype. You've been able to connect with some fairly major names. So first off, major props to you and air horns are gonna be placed right... here [Sound Man throws 'em in] because of all these crazy amazing brands, but secondly, how did you do it? And wait, before you answer the second question, my third question is how can you hook up Living Corporate with some of these amazing names? 'Cause these names are crazy. Emily: Well, you know, I think the best place to start when you're building anything is, you know, with whatever semblance of a network that you do have. And so, you know, really I--when I was starting FindSpark, I talked to as many folks as I could that I already knew - friends, mostly friends from college, the people that I had met at events, you know? As you could guess, I'm a big event geek and I really--you know, really, really love events and personally go to many of them, and so I'm pretty--I was always putting myself out there, and when I had the idea for FindSpark I would just really talk to as many people as I could about it, and I think that's something that a lot of people get wrong when they're trying to start something is they think, "Well, I don't want to talk about it yet," or "It's not perfect yet," or "I don't want somebody to steal my idea," and things of that nature, and I think it's good to talk to as many people as possible because you never know how they might be able to help you. And so I really started by doing small events, inviting people that I knew or just inviting people that I found through my own research online, and, you know, when you have a really awesome mission of, you know, taking something that's usually really crappy, which is networking, and, you know, saying that, like, "Hey, this is actually gonna be enjoyable. It's gonna be a really great group, and you're gonna connect with folks who maybe are outside of your normal network." It's a pretty carrot to put in front of people, and by always--by always creating a very welcoming and inclusive environment from day one, we've just built an extremely diverse crowd and, you know, in the broadest sense. You know, not just gender and ethnicity, and so that really got the attention of employers, in addition to employers seeing that, like, "Wow, they're creating these really fun ways to connect with these candidates," and when I started it was I would say definitely more of a--it was harder to get jobs when I started FindSpark, you know? It was, like, right around--you know, off of, like, the 2008 tough times when it was hard for really anyone to get a job, but now it's really switched I think to be more of a candidate's marketplace, and so, you know, employers need to be competitive in terms of, you know, showing candidates why they're at the best place to work and have the best opportunities and opportunities for growth. And so that's--you know, that's what they really come to us for is to show that they're, you know, investing in, you know, new and different ways to connect with talent and not just going to, you know, the same top ten colleges and posting on their job board and, you know, getting referrals from people that, you know, they're going above and beyond to create experiences and opportunities for talent to connect with them.Zach: Was there ever a moment while building FindSpark that you said, "Wow, this is pretty special?"Emily: You know--well, I would say going back to, you know, all of these great partners that we've been able to work with, these great employers, I mean, I think every time we get to do something incredible--and, you know, whether or not it's a huge employer like, you know, Grey Advertising or NBC Universal, I mean, even the smaller companies where, you know, you probably haven't heard of them because they're not a consumer-facing name, but we know that they have incredible opportunities. And, you know, those moments where we are building something that's going to connect folks to, you know, a career or a life-changing, you know, opportunity or connection. I mean, those are always the best moments, and luckily they happen fairly often. So those are--yeah, I would say those moments where we're, you know, building these partnerships, getting them off the ground, and then also just, you know, the positive aftermath of them when, you know, you get the follow-ups of folks who have made positive connections and who you've had an impact on. I have a very wonderful starred inbox full of folks who, you know, have shared their successes, and that's always really, really exciting and rewarding.Zach: I bet. So, you know, you made mention earlier about making connections, right? You said it's a candidate's market and how, you know, employers are seeking to really--to get and acquire true talent. So I'm curious, what advice would you give organizations who are seeking to be more inclusive and diverse by hiring ethnically diverse millennial talent? And what have you seen work?Emily: Well, you know, I think one important thing is to realize the difference between diversity and inclusion, right? They're often paired together, and we even talk about--you know, at FindSpark we talk about how we support diversity and inclusion, but they are two different things, and so, you know, for us, our ideal clients and for the employers we're working with, we really want to make sure that they have the inclusion side down before they start partnering with us in an external way that's more focused on diversity. And we also do DNI consulting, and we'll work internally as, like, an adviser as well if they're at that, you know, internal stage because there's no point in attracting diverse talent or talent that might not be representative of, like, how your company make-up is as a whole if you're gonna get them in the door and then not be providing the support they need to thrive and to grow, because then they're just gonna leave. So, you know, doing those internal sort of audits first of what is the, you know, climate of inclusivity. Are your hiring practices or your interview practices and your onboarding practices as inclusive as they can be? You know, and really getting all of that back-end structure set up first before going on the external side. And if you have all of that, you know, internal stuff, you know, set up and you have that going, then in terms of the external side I would say, you know, of course it's inserting yourself into communities and places where there is--where there is diverse talent or talent that's not coming from the most obvious places. You know, FindSpark is a great partner because we have so many different schools represented in our community, and we focus on what we call early-career talent, so that's folks with about zero to five years of experience. So you're either (in repping?) current attendants of different schools or, you know, have graduated from them, but, you know, it can be easy to focus on just a few schools with, you know, a few top programs and that sort of thing, but, you know, you have to think beyond the obvious. And I would say the other thing is to give opportunities to folks on your team, to a diverse range of folks on your team, when it comes to thought leadership, when it comes to creating content, when it comes to having a say in what sort of partnerships or recruiting practices that you are doing because that's really important too for people to see externally that folks who are in your company already from diverse backgrounds are elevated and have the opportunity to, you know, make significant contributions and that sort of thing.Zach: No, absolutely. It's funny that you--it's interesting that you bring that up because, you know, to your point, it's not just about having black and brown folks in the audience. It's like, "Okay, well, who actually has the decision-making authority and power," right?Emily: Right, mm-hmm.Zach: So if you see a bunch of--I mean, not to be--like, not to be too crass, right, but, like, if you look at in the 1800s, like, plantations were very diverse, but they weren't inclusive, right? Like, you had black folks everywhere, but there was only so many--there was a certain group of people who were only in power, right? So it's like, how do you figure out and how do you include and make sure that people who are--who are not necessarily the majority still feel involved and empowered with the decision-making of what's really happening around? So to your point around the thought leadership and actually being able to say, "Look, I was able to contribute to something. I was actually able to point to something and say I actually had a hand in driving that." That's so important. So as you know, Living Corporate focuses on the experiences of under-represented people and groups in the workplace. In my experience, so much of networking is built off of who you know. Like, if you're a first-generation immigrant or if you're a black or Latinx person or et cetera, your social circles are drastically smaller than your white counterparts. What advice have you or influencers within FindSpark's network given to people of color as they seek to grow their network and navigate their careers?Emily: Yeah, absolutely. Well, I also--in addition to FindSpark, I'm also an adjunct professor at a couple of colleges, and I teach career and social media courses. And they're different courses, different types of students. One is senior computer animation students at SVA. Another is a mix of different types of students at FIT, different grade levels, but an assignment that I give to both of them is to reach out and--reach out using only social media and the internet to get an informational interview with someone who you admire, and it's so simple, and as, you know, older folks, you and I--not too old, of course--but, you know, we understand that concept and that it's important and that you can do that, but younger people, especially younger people who might be coming from families who don't understand what they want to do or have, you know, no connections in the world where they want to go, it's not obvious that "Oh, I can just find someone whose work I admire and say hi and, like, ask them for their time?" Like, "What? I didn't even--what?" Like, "Really? Are you sure?" You know, especially younger--you know, at FIT a lot of my students are on the younger side. They may be, like, freshmen or sophomores, and, you know, they don't learn that kind of thing in high school. Like, they're not teaching the importance of networking. They're learning, like, how to take an SAT test and that kind of thing, and so they don't realize, like, how important it is to learn from other people and how open people are. And they're used to using social media for joking around with their friends and, like, being doofuses, and, you know--which I think is another misnomer that older people have, like "Oh, young people, they know all about how to use social media to do anything that they want," and yes, it's true that younger people are more--they are more digital natives in a sense. They know how to use the tools, like, logistically. Like, they would, like, more intuitively understand how to use different apps and Snapchat and all that kind of stuff, but that doesn't mean that they understand how they can use it professionally. And, you know, they have this whole other layer of--you know, a complete additional layer or many different layers of etiquette that they have to deal with. Like, "How do I present myself on all these different platforms to my professors, to my peers, to potential employers or mentors?" Et cetera, et cetera, and so just really empowering them that yes, you can use the internet, which is so amazing that you can reach out to so many different types of people so easily to connect with folks and really take ownership of building a network and getting them into the mindset that, you know, most people will not respond to them as well.Zach: Right.Emily: Because I--which, you know, I'm not just like, "Yes, the internet is magic, and you can get all of the people you want in your network so easily, and it's no big deal." Like, no. You know, I teach them it's possible, but it takes a lot of effort and it takes time, and of course you want to be creating great work on your own and show them that you're someone worth investing their time in because of, you know, your work ethic and things that you've created and done and that sort of thing, but that, you know, yes, a lot of people--most people will not respond to you or not get back to you, and that's okay, but the important thing is you try and you try in an authentic way, you know? By reaching out to people who you truly admire, you're gonna send better notes, you're gonna have better meetings because, you know, you truly admire them versus, like, "I'm gonna send the same message to 20 different people at Viacom 'cause I just want to take any job at Viacom," right? Like, that's not gonna work. So again, especially if you're not coming into a career with a built-in family network or a strong network from college, because maybe your campus is not one that companies come to and that sort of thing. Just knowing that there are so many people out there who want to help you and guide you and support you, and so it's just a matter of finding those people, you know? Looking across different platforms, and focus on people who have already shown an interest in helping others. You know, so those would be like people with podcasts or people who have blogs or people who are actively posting on social media or people who put their emails in their social media bios.Zach: Right. They do that for a reason.Emily: Yeah, and still people will be hesitant to reach out, you know? So focus on those types of people, people who do speaking engagements, who have written books. You know, there's different levels of that sort of thing, but those people are just more likely to be responsive as well. And so if you are someone who is from an underrepresented background as well, I would say, you know, it's important--well, really for anyone to just make yourself accessible to folks as well as being able to pay it forward.Zach: So again, I'm not trying to be a fan or too starstruck, but I see those names you've been able to connect with. How much of that has to do with you stepping out of your comfort zone and just putting yourself out there?Emily: Yeah. Well, I think it's huge, and I think what makes it easier is really knowing and having--knowing that you have something of value to offer, and also just really understanding why it will be valuable to, you know, the company or the person because, you know, at the end of the day everybody's got their own problems, and they want to look good, and they want to help their company grow. So, you know, when you're approaching anyone, whether it's for a partnership or you're just a person, like, looking for a job, you know, it's really understanding what their needs are and how you can help with that need and help solve that problem and, you know, ultimately make the person who vouched for you--again, whether that's the talent acquisition person or the person who's, you know, bringing on your company as a partner--you know, making them look good. Like, making them be like, "Wow, I'm so happy that I made this happen, that I brought this person on," or, you know, brought this partnership to life.Zach: Okay, so I don't want the interview to get too far away from us before I ask about what FindSpark has planned in 2019 and you letting us know where we can learn more about your organization and why professionals and employers alike should engage your platform.Emily: Awesome, of course. So, I mean, in terms of our plans, like, we have created so many incredible programs over the last year and are gonna be doing more and more in 2019, so, you know, we're doing a lot of custom partnerships with employers. One of my favorite recent examples is we worked with Grey Advertising to create a free eight-week portfolio school for aspiring creatives who have not already been through some sort of formal advertising program, whether through an official portfolio school or a well-known advertising college or university. So we brought a really, really diverse group of students who all had to apply to attend--apply to be a part of it. It was very competitive, and they had access to this incredible education from top creatives at Grey. They got to present final projects, their final campaign projects, to the chief worldwide creative officer at Grey. I mean, like, this was an incredibly, like, career and life-changing opportunity for those selected. So doing more and more programs like that where we are able to create these really meaningful connections and educational opportunities as well, and also we're doing more to support the inclusion side of employers and their initiatives as well. So our NBC Universal partnership we just did, not only did we bring in--create an event where we brought in 40 curated FindSpark members and candidates essentially, but the event also--they invited 40 folks from their young professionals network at NBC to come to this event as well and hear from this panel of incredible ad sales professionals at NBC Universal. So, you know, not only was it a great way to build a pipeline of potential candidates to bring into NBC, but for--you know, NBC has tons of employees with tons of potential too, and so curating, you know, a great group of those folks to also learn and network with the folks we brought in was really exciting. So again, doing more programs that also support that internal--like, we talked about, like, inclusion and providing opportunities for underrepresented talent inside and outside of the organization to excel and grow is, you know, what we're doing more and more of. And so in terms of where folks can learn more, definitely follow us on Instagram, and I know that's how we connected, so gotta give some shout out to the gram.Zach: That's right, shout out to the gram.Emily: We're at FindSpark on Instagram and every platform, [inaudible] make your Instagram feed a little bit more productive. But so fun, and then if you go to FindSpark.com/newsletter, if you're a young professional, an early-career professional, you can sign up to hear all about our opportunities, and FindSpark.com/employers is where you can learn more about partnering with us to connect with our [inaudible].Zach: That's awesome. Now, look, before we go, do you have any shout outs or final words?Emily: I would say always be connecting with people who you find interesting, and do it in a genuine way. And don't just connect with them, but always make sure that you're also creating time to maintain those relationships by practicing what I like to call unforced follow-up, which is, you know, when you see something, whether it's an Instagram post or an email or an article and you think--and you think of someone in your network, most people do that and they just think about them but then they move on with their day. If you take a couple of minutes when that happens to actually take the time to send it to that person or tag them in the post, send them an email with no intention other than just saying, "Hey, I thought of you," "This is the thing that made me think of you," that sort of thing will really help you maintain your network as well, which is super, super important.Zach: Always be connecting. I like that. We might have found the subtitle for this podcast, 'cause see, I think the episode--and tell me how you feel about the title of this podcast. Do you like having an audience? Do you want them to keep coming back, episode after episode? Then why are you constantly telling them you don’t have time for them? Rant warning! Time reference is one of my biggest pet peeves. I hate it when radio hosts and DJs reference time (or the lack of it) and I especially hate it when podcasters references it (it’s not like you have to get out before the newscast or commercial break! You OWN your clock!!). Tell me if you’ve heard this or said this before. “Well, that’s all the time we have.” Or, how about, “We’re out of time.” Really? Are you really out of time? What more is there to talk about if only we had more time? Or, are you just too lazy to find a better way to gracefully exit the interview? If you’ve listened to even one minute of my podcast then you know that I’m all about the listener. Everything you do as a podcaster should be with the listener in mind. So, think about it. What message are you sending to a listener when you cut things off ‘for time’? Here’s what your listener thinks you’re saying, “I, prominent and super-important podcast host, have no more time to give my listener than this prescribed time despite the fact that the guest has so much more to offer. I have to end things because sticking to time is more important than giving my listener all of the goodies.” Or, perhaps even worse, “I don’t know how to management time or my guest and now I have to short change my listener…” Oh, you didn’t think you were saying that? You are. Good news. In this episode of Just the Tip, I help you understand why you’re running out of time in the first place. And, I give you a few easy to use tools that will help you manage your time better, get out of an interview more gracefully (without referencing time), and stop sending unintended messages to your audience that they don’t matter to you. Sound good? Great - hit play. Do it now. I don’t have all day here… Speaking of time. If you’d like more of it to work on making your podcast the absolute best it can be - why not let me take editing off your to-do list. I love editing and would be happy to take care of that for you. Really? Are we actually considering arming hyper-intelligent systems? The question should be, how do we stop the development of strong artificial intelligence from becoming weaponized? Not all AI's are alike. Todays AI's like SIRI, Alexa, Google, and Cortana are essentially wave 2 AI's, our digital assistants. Wave 3 AI's are expected to be a much higher level of intelligence than our own. Let's weaponize them, NOT!

PODCAST TRANSCRIPT Welcome to the Scent Work University All About Scent Work Podcast. In this podcast, we'll be talking about all things Scent Work. We'll be giving you behind-the-scenes look as far as what your instructor or trial officials may be going through. We'll be giving you training tips, and we'll just be discussing everything that goes along with doing Scent Work with your dog, whether you're interested in competition or not. In this episode, we're going to be talking about what it would mean to be an ideal official at a Scent Work trial. In other words, what you would be able to do if you were officiating your trial to ensure everything went well. All right, let's get started. Before we get started, I just want to take a really quick moment to introduce myself. My name is Dianna Santos. I am the Owner and Lead Instructor for both Scent Work University and Dog Sport University. These are online dog training platforms that are designed to connect outstanding trainers with as many dog owners as possible. Both SWU and DSU are designed to provide quality, convenience, and flexibility. We hope that you'll check them out to see if there are any online programs that may be suitable for both you and your dog. Without further ado, let's dive into the podcast. When it comes to Scent Work trials, there are many people who are responsible and can contribute to the overall success or failure of that trial. One of the most important elements of a Scent Work trial are the actual people who are working as officials at that trial. Now, depending on the organization you're competing with, there can be a variety of different officials, or there may just be one. It really depends on the organization. But across the board, there are some things that almost every single competitor can say, "Uh, it's going to be that kind of official." It just ruins the entire experience. In our prior podcast, we were talking about what officials would consider an ideal competitor to be. In this podcast, I want to flip that on its head, and to talk about what competitors would consider an ideal official. Likewise, I also want to do this from a standpoint of an organization overall, so that everyone can kind of have a better understanding of what it is that officials should be expected to do, what they're expected not to do, and what the thinking is behind it, not only from a competitor perspective, but from an organization perspective as well. Now again, this podcast is not meant to demoralize anyone or to make anyone feel lesser than, or anything like that. This is simply supposed to be something that we can sit back, listen to, and analyze, "Am I approaching this the right way? Am I doing what I need to do?" Also, if you are an official, something you should always ask yourself is, "Do I enjoy officiating? Am I doing it for the right reasons?" If the answers to either of those questions is, "No," then you are going to negatively affect a trial, and you're also just going to make yourself miserable. Officiating is extraordinarily difficult. It is not an easy job. It's very trying, it's tiring, and it really does take a lot out of you at the end of the day. I don't know of many officials who can officiate all day or even better, a weekend or a multi-day trial, and come out of it afterwards and just feel completely refreshed and everything is great. A lot of us need at least a day to recover, if not more, because you're giving so much of yourself when you're officiating. If things aren't put together properly, or if it's not going well, that's going to amplify the negative effects, and you could also be potentially ruining the experience for a whole slew of people with their dogs. It could also look badly on the trial host, and of course, it can look badly on the organization itself. These are the kinds of things that we want to try to avoid as best as we can. The purpose of this podcast, again, is not to try to make anyone feel bad, it's just to point out some of the pitfalls that you want to try to avoid, and also just to have an open and honest conversation that maybe you just need to take a break from officiating for a while if you've been doing it consistently, non-stop for months or years. Maybe officiating may not be for you, or maybe this will reinvigorate you to say, "I really like officiating, and now I'll make sure that I really step it up, and I am the best official I could possibly be." Those are kind of the things that I'm going for as far as a theme for this podcast. I am an official. I also oversee officials. I understand how difficult this is, so I'm coming at this with a lot of empathy and understanding, but there are things that we need to talk about as a community within a community, to ensure that we're doing the best that we can. As we did with our prior podcast, I just want to start off with some things that competitors, when they encounter something at a trial in regards to an official, they go, "Uh, it's going to be one of those days," so that we can discuss them, and so that we can avoid doing that in the future. The first is officials who come across as extraordinarily robotic. What I mean by this is you have a competitor, and they've gotten themselves all together, they have the routine, they're all organized, and they're pretty excited, albeit they're probably nervous and a little jittery, but you know, they have done their homework. They know the rules, their dog has the training, everything is perfect. They come up to the start line, and they have that nervous energy, but they're still kind of excited, and they're getting ready for their search, and maybe there's a gate steward. Maybe the judge isn't the person who is giving them the information, and this person is warm, and welcoming, and everything is fabulous. They're asking, "Is the competitor okay? Do they have any questions? Make sure you have fun." Everything is fabulous so far. This little person goes waddling up to the start line, and they're so excited, and they look up, and they see the stone-faced, stiff, broad-shouldered, intimidating person standing in the corner who says, "Go when ready." All of that fun and joy just leaves them, because this robotic, angry looking person is the one who holds all of their Scent Work dreams and hopes in their hands, and it looks as though they are not happy that you are even in their search area at all. This is something that officials have to work on, in that you can still be a judge, you can still be objective, you can still do your job without coming across as though you are this completely inhuman, robotic, even worse yet, angry and judgmental person. That's not the goal. Again, we have to remember that we are officiating sports. This is a game. We are not trying to determine if these teams can go out and search a disaster site to find survivors. That's not what this is. We are not certifying teams to go out and search for dead bodies, or bombs, or drugs, or fugitives. That's not what this is. They're finding birch, anise, or clover, or other target odors. This is a game, and these are civilians with civilian dogs. This is not the same as certifying a professional team who very well could be doing life or death searches. That's not what this sport is. As an official, we have to have the same standards that are put forward by the organization of you need to have a certain amount of training, we need to ensure the way we set up the search area is correct. All that is fine, but that doesn't mean that we should be looking at these people as though, "And you are lesser than ... Don't you dare make a mistake." That's not how this should go. I have to say, having certified and worked with a number of officials for a couple years now, I would say the mass majority of them are coming at it from the right approach at least on the outset, but as soon as you put that clipboard in their hand, the smiles goes away, they get really tense, and I think a lot of people it's just concentrating. They're trying to make sure that they don't miss anything, that they're doing their job properly, but it does affect the competitor. We need to try to avoid that, because we could be effecting the search in ways that we didn't intend, so that the result at the end isn't accurate, and that doesn't help anybody. Again, from a competitor perspective, and I've had this happen to me, where I've come to a search area, again, being an official, being a known official, being someone who oversees officials, and I've had officials just completely bark at me. It's like, "Really? Are you sure that's the best thing to do right now? I'm being pleasant as pie, there's no reason for you to be snarky, or snappy, or just mean or angry. What is the problem?" You have to be really careful about that as an official. I understand completely that it can be very difficult as the day goes on to keep that super friendly, professional, not snarky or snipey thing going. Let's just be blunt. There are going to be competitors that are just unpleasant, and I get it. I've had them. I've had people who have for all intents and purposes, ruined my day, and what I've had to do is just stop the search for just a couple of minutes, maybe one, two, three minutes, go take a walk, breathe, maybe eat a donut or something, collect myself, and then come back, because it's no one else's fault. That competitor was unpleasant. These other competitors haven't done anything, and it's my responsibility to be professional from the moment I get out of my car, to the moment I get back into my car. There are no time in between those two events that I can just throw professionalism out the window and just be a jerk and say like, "Well, the world has wronged me, I shall wrong everyone else as well." That doesn't work, because not only will it negatively affect the trial, you're making the organization look bad, you're making the trial host look bad, and you're also making yourself look bad. The first thing that I would say that competitors dread for officials are officials who are very robotic, and then that can also be construed as officials that are very mean. Now, I'm going to be covering when we are actually mean a little bit, but just know that if you don't take that time to create that human connection, that you can come across as being mean, even though you're not trying to be. So just be careful about that. A smile, a ... anything. I'm not asking you to be their therapist, I'm not asking you to be their friend, and no, you shouldn't show any preferential treatment or anything like that, but just letting them know that you are actually a person, and that you recognize that they are actually a person, and not just a sack of meat that's going not be walking through your area, and you're going to be dinging them for everything they do wrong. Just let them know that with how you carry yourself that this is a game, and that you are a person and a human being who is going to be judging them fairly. That does wonders for a trial if you can do that. I've seen trials where officials struggle with that, and just the whole atmosphere is just gross. I've seen trials where officials are amazing at making that connection with competitors, and the atmosphere is so much better. So again, I would just urge all of my fellow officials to just think about your approach, and see if there are ways that you can maybe tweak things if you happen to know that you get really stiff, and robotic, and you kind of shut off when you're trying to do officiating. The other thing that competitors dread when they are talking about officials, are officials who don't know the rules. This is a huge problem, and this isn't just something from a competitor's side, there's a huge problem for the trial host, there's a huge problem for the organization, and it's also just a problem for you as the official. Where this comes up is where you're in the middle of doing a search, and something happens, and as a competitor, you know, "Well, because this happened, then so-and-so is supposed to happen," or, "This is supposed to happen over here," or whatever. You have an expectation, because you know the rules, and suddenly the official is saying, "Oh no, you're done. Goodbye." You're like, "Well, wait a minute. That's not the way the rules read." Then when you try to follow up, the official is adamant, like, "No, that's not correct. Off you go." Now you as a competitor are now deemed as a complainer. You have to go talk to the trial chair, and if they happen to pull up the rules and the competitor is now correct, now you have to go into this whole kind of scenario of a competitor of, "Do I really stick to my guns and ask for a re-run? What is it that I do?" Now the trial host is in a really sticky situation of, "How do I make my competitor, who's paying me, happy so they actually want to come back, and they're not complaining? How do I also do this so that it's in the confines of the actual overall rules for the organization? Because if I don't do it well as the host, the organization may not want me to host trials anymore." All because this official didn't understand the rules for what it is that they're officiating, there is now this huge problem. I say this because many officials are officiating in multiple venues, which is wonderful, I am not saying that's bad, it's not, but it's also really super confusing. Many of the organizations have rules that are similar, but also slightly different, and there are other things that are just completely and totally different. If you are officiating at a trial, I urge you, regardless of how long you've been officiating, regardless of how long you've been an instructor, a professional, what have you, literally read up on the rules for what it is that you are officiating, what you're responsible for, the day before the trial, ideally even the week before, so if you have questions, you can ask whoever it is that you have to ask. Don't just go off of memory, don't just assume, because there are slight enough differences that can get you into serious trouble when you are just going off of memory in the heat of the moment. I'll give you an example. I was working in the score room for a trial, and I get a score sheet back for one of the games, which allows for multiple false alerts. You can call two false alerts in one of these games, and on the third, you would then as a competitor be disqualified. But I get the score sheet back, and it says, "One false alert," and then a time, and that's it. If you were to look at this, it looks as though the competitor called a false alert, the judge said, "Sorry, no," and then they just ended the search, which is incorrect. I then had to bring this up with the overseeing official, which is in USCSS the Chief Search Designer, or CSD, and pointed this out, and she said, "Oh no." She went and talked to the judge who did not realize that this was the case. They then had to go and talk to the competitor, who had to talk to the trial chair person, and they all handled it very professionally. They were very kind, and worked well with this competitor, who decided that they were just going to just take the end cue. They were like, "That's fine. My dog is tired. I know for next time, it's no big deal." The trial host refunded that competitor for the run, and they were like, "Look, we're even going to refund you your money. Don't worry about it." Even though this was handled about as well as it could have, considering, it could have been completely avoided if that judge had read up on the rules for that game. Now, does that mean that this judge is a terrible person? Of course not. Mistakes happen, that's fine, but you have to take your responsibility as an official very seriously, and that means that even if you're officiating for a organization for a certain period of time, if you are doing officiating in other organizations, do yourself the favor and read up on the rules before you actually go to that trial. It just helps. There are significant enough differences and similarities that can get you into a lot of trouble, and depending on the organization, they may not be so understanding if you do make that mistake, because it can have such big blow back on the organization itself. So again, from a competitor's standpoint, it is super frustrating when the person who's there as the professional, as the face of the organization, they don't seem to know what the rules are for the actual trial itself. That is really frustrating. It can have a lot of negative connotations and results. I mean, you could have a competitor lose out on cues that they actually earned, and depending on the organization, if they had entered in subsequent trials assuming that they would have had those cues, that could be a really huge problem. They could be out a lot of money, where they wouldn't be able to change their entries or anything else. That's a nightmare. You have to really be careful about this. Please, please, please, make certain as an official that you are reading up on the rules for the organization actually officiating for, before you actually go to that trial. The other thing that competitors dread as far as officials overall are officials who are coming at this from the standpoint of, "I am the best thing since sliced bread." Now, this is going to rub some people the wrong way, and I'm going to apologize in advance. Whatever you have achieved in your training, and in your competition, or even in your professional career is commendable, and it does deserve respect, and for us to tip our hat to you, but it ends there. You being an official is not an opportunity for you to toot your own horn. You being an official is not an opportunity for you to then project to everyone just how amazing you and/or your dogs are. That's not the point. Just know that when you do that, you're going to be turning off about 95% of the people who are listening to you, and that doesn't just include competitors, that includes other officials, trial hosts, and quite frankly, I think even trial staff, like trial organization staff. It's just something I know for me personally, it really irks me when someone is taking the time when they're actually on the clock as an official, to go on, and on, and on about how they've achieved this, and they've achieved that, and they've achieved the other thing. It doesn't matter. It really doesn't. We are assuming that you have the expertise for this organization to have approved you as an official. Does that mean that's guaranteed? No, let's just be blunt. It depends on the organization, and it depends on the individual, and it depends on how much digging that organization does, and people can lie and whatever else. There's only so much an organization can do, but more often than not, they've done their due diligence, they've checked, they know that you have a certain level of expertise. That's assumed, otherwise you shouldn't be an official. You don't need to project that. You don't need to tell the world, "I am the best ever." Because at a trial, I can pretty much guarantee you that first of all, there are other officials who are probably pretty well accomplished as well, and you may actually have some competitors who are really super accomplished too. Worse still, you have baby competitors who are just starting out, that can take all that projection that you're doing in a way that deflates them horribly, where now they think, "There's no way that I can do this. Look at a lot this stuff that this person has achieved. I'm never going to get there. You know what? This is too stressful, I'm just not even going to do this anymore." That would be horrible, and I can tell you, it's happened. I've had to talk people back into playing because they heard someone go on, and on, and on about how great they are. They're like, "I don't have any of those skills. I wouldn't be able to be where they are." It's like, "It doesn't matter. Are you having fun with your dog?" "Yeah, I guess." "Well, then great. Keep focusing on having the fun, and you can go as far as you want to. You don't have to go to nationals, you don't have to have every title under the sun if you don't want to. Do this for what is good for you and your dog." They're like, "Oh, so that means I don't have to stress myself out to get the highest title, even though I would be miserable the whole way?" "Of course not. Of course you don't. It's your dog, it's your journey. You can do whatever you like." Just realize that as an official, you are being hired to do a job. It is nothing more, it is nothing less. You are there as an employee. You are there to do something. You are not there to tell everyone about yourself. It's not a marketing opportunity. That's not to say that there aren't people who maybe at the end of the trial who say, "You know what? I was really impressed with the hides you set today. Do you do workshops? Do you teach classes? I would love to work with you." That's happened to me a lot, and that's happened to other officials too, particularly judges that make that human connection. My god, I've seen more competitors walk up to judges at the end of trials going, "I really liked you. Do you do classes or seminars? Would you be able to come out to our place? We would love to have you." That's great, and they didn't do that by saying, "I'm the best." They were just professional, and doing their job, and doing it well. That's all you have to do. I say this because it can really make everything really gross, and it's really super stressful as someone who works on the organization side to get those kinds of complaints from trials, because it shouldn't be happening. It has no place, so it's a fire that really should never have existed in the first place. So again, if you are an official, make certain that you're not even inadvertently walking into the territory where you're talking about, "Well, I did this, and my dog did that, and we're just the best." It has no place, just make sure that you don't do that. Now, I want to make a little bit of a shift from the competitor standpoint of, "Oh god, the official is doing that, oh no," to what trial hosts may be dreading with their officials. The first is the lack of communication. This should not be happening. If a trial host has contacted you asking if you're available to officiate, please be courteous and respond to them no later than seven days after they've contacted you. Ideally, it's a lot faster. Now, I get that many of us are so incredibly busy. We have classes, we have seminars, we're trialing, we're competing, we may actually have lives outside of Scent Work. Who would have thought? That's fine. That's why most organizations will give you that seven days, but please respond to them, and do yourself a favor and respond in writing. You can absolutely talk to them on the phone, but follow it up with an email. A little bit of CYA goes a long way when a host goes, "I never heard from blah, blah, blah," and you could say, "Oh, well here's my follow up email to our phone conversation. I won't be able to officiate, I'm so sorry." Or, "Oh no, I said I would, and we had talked about it. Here it is. This is not starting off on a good foot, but maybe we can fix it." There's courtesy, and then there's also just making sure that you are making your life as easy as possible. Even after that initial communication, you need to be in a communication with these people consistently leading up to the trial, as well as the trial itself, and then even after the trial if there's any other paperwork, or issues, or any other loose ends that need to be tied up. Please don't fall off the grid. Don't just disappear, and don't not answer emails or phone calls. Again, this is a job. This is not just something like, "Oh well, you know, I guess I'll get to it when I can." No, you are being paid or compensated in some way to do this. You have to act professionally, and again, I'm saying this being someone who is incredibly busy, but if someone contacts me, I do everything in my power to get back to them as quickly as I can, at the very least at the end of that day if I'm really completely swamped. Also just make sure that you are prioritizing what it is that you need to respond to. For instance, if you have a trial coming up and you get a message from your trial host, and it's like, "Help, we need help," and then you get another message from a friend that you just saw yesterday, and they're like, "Oh, look at this cute cat video," maybe you reach out to the trial host that needs the help. It's just like you have to know how to handle yourself so that they don't feel lost and they don't have the support that they need. On the same lines as having good communication is making certain that everyone is on the same page as far as what it is that you're doing, so whether or not you're just doing judging, if there are different officials for judging and actually setting hides. If for the organization that this trial is for, maybe you have to do both. Maybe there are going to be multiple officials at that trial, so maybe you're only going to be responsible for certain things, for working in certain search areas, for instance. Make certain all that is really laid out in detail, in writing, in a contract, that you and this host sign. This is not just frivolous paperwork, this is to ensure that everyone is on the same page, because if you just go off of verbal, first of all, one of you may forget, which would be a problem when you get to the trial and suddenly everything is different. It also ensures that for the trial host, that they have it in writing of, "Okay, I'm going to have Sally Sue, and she's going to be doing these five things, and oh, we're going to be adding on this and this. Wow, she looks a little overwhelmed. Let me get another official." It just helps everyone realize what it is that each person has to do, and whether or not they need to bring in more people. You can also say, "Hey, by the way, you have me trying to be in two different places at once. I'm not going to be able to do that. You need to bring somebody else on." The more transparency that you can have, the better it is for everyone. The other big thing about trial hosts, one of the more common complaints that we get, is in addition to the lack of communication, is a lack of organization, meaning that this official seems very frazzled, disorganized, and kind of all over the place. That's a problem. Even if you are quote unquote, "Just a judge," and there is no such thing in my opinion as, "Just a judge," judges are really super important, even if they're not setting hides, you still have responsibilities as an official, and one of those is to be organized. I think anyone who has been an official for any period of time can have a good understanding of just how complex a Scent Work trial really is. The fact that any of them go well is actually pretty amazing. It's a really complex moving system of parts. If there's a problem with one of those moving parts, it effects everything. As a judge, you have to try to be as organized as possible, so if you happen to know an issue, it doesn't snowball out of control, which can happen pretty quickly. This is even magnified when you are placing hides. You have to absolutely be organized when you're placing hides, because you have to be organized not only in how you actually set your odor, but also with how you plan. Do you know that your searches are going to be set up in such a way that allows for efficient and safe flow? What happens if a competitor had the option of not entering everything, and they're only entering into the second search? How are they going to get there? Is that going to cause any issues? You have to think through all this stuff, which requires organization. You can't just show up at the trial site and say, "Okay, we're just going to wing it." That doesn't work. You have to think these things through. In the same vein of being organized, making certain that you know what you're responsible for, and not just assuming that someone else is going to take care of it. What I mean by that, is particularly for people who are setting hides. Are you the one who's applying the odor? Nine times out of 10, I would say that that should be the official's responsibility. They should be the one providing the odor. That way you know that you've prepared it correctly, it's by the rules, all that good stuff. But in addition to that, who is providing the warm up containers? Who's providing the search containers? Who's providing the backup containers? And are those all in compliance with the rules? If you have to go out and purchase them, who's paying for that? If you're paying for it, are you being reimbursed for it? If you're being reimbursed for it, is there a cap that the trial host has put on for how much you can spend, and are you comfortable, if you go over that cap, covering the difference? I mean, these are all important details that all goes down to being organized, but if you just show up and go like, "I'm here. Let's slap some odor on, hope for the best," no. That's naughty to do that. The other thing that trial hosts really dread with their officials are people who are only interested in doing the absolute bare minimum. Now, I would say that this is a bad thing across the board. I think that anyone could say, "Yeah, if you're just skating by, that's not good." What I mean by this, is officials who come in, maybe they're totally pleasant with all the competitors, they are organized as far as getting themselves all set up, they've officiated their search. We'll say that this is an organization or a set up where you can just be a judge, where you're also setting hides, but in this trial, you are only responsible for one search. If you are doing all this officiating, everything is great, this search is now wrapped up, and you just leave, that's a big problem, because first of all, no one else is supposed to be touching the odor. Second of all, this area may be used another day for a different search, or even later on that day. Depending on the organization, maybe they allow for nested searches, so now they're going to be adding in another hide. Even if it's something that you personally are not responsible for, you are still on the clock. Help. Help these people get everything wrapped up so that they can all leave. Remember that trial hosts more often than not are renting space when they're doing trials, which means that every hour that they go over what they agreed to rent the space for is costing them a lot of money. As the trial goes on, less and less volunteers are going to be there. There's just going to be less bodies available. As the official, you are responsible for your trial search area. That is your responsibility. Even after your last competitor is done, you should still be prepared to go in there and clean up. I have to say that for all the trials that I have overseen, or participated in, or worked at for a variety of different organizations, this isn't that big of a thing, in that it's not a big issue. More often than not, trial officials just automatically do this, but there have been some times where we go through and the search area is the exactly the same, and it's hours later. I'm like, "Well, where are you?" And the person's just sitting in their car. It's like, "What are you doing?" "Oh, well it's hot." "I don't care. This is your job, come out and help us." Just make sure that as an official, that you are not doing that. You have to follow through, again, that timeframe. You are on the clock from the moment you get out of your car, to the moment you get back in your car, not to just sit in it in the parking lot, but like to drive away. That's when you're on the clock to be an official. I now want to make another shift from the dreads of a trial host to the dreads of an organization, of the types of things and feedback that we get back from officials that just makes our hair stand on end and our skin crawl. The first is we'll get complaints both from trial hosts and from competitors, "I don't think your official has any idea what they're doing." That's not good feedback. That's not helpful at all. There can be a number of different reasons why this can happen, and some of it may just be completely out of the control of the trial official. Let's all be blunt. Mother Nature sometimes is just impossible to work with. No matter how hard you try, no matter how much effort you put in, things just don't go the way that they should. Even in those situations, it's your responsibility as an official to explain that to the competitors as well as the trial host as best as you can without making excuses. Just explain what happened in the space, and maybe even what adjustments you tried to make to accommodate that. That's best case scenario. Worst case scenario is where as an official, you are not making the delineation between setting hides that are for trial, where again we are testing training. A standard has been set by the organization, regardless of what organization it is, and they have said, "Competitor and dog must be able to do A, B, C, and D in order to pass this search." You, official, go and design that search to meet that standard. That's your job. That's all you're doing. That is entirely different from setting up a training hide where you are teaching someone and their dog how to develop those skills. Those are two entirely different things. More often than not, when searches don't go well, it's because it's not a trial hide, it is a training hide. That's not appropriate. As an organization, that is extraordinarily frustrating, because I know for myself, we have these discussions when we are first certifying our officials, when they go through our course, when they do our official mock trial with the United States Canine Sense Sports. We do all this stuff, and then still, we'll end up with a complaint from someone. It's like, "Guys, you're killing me." Look, it doesn't happen often, but it happens sometimes, and it can't. I know first-hand how difficult that can be to walk that line. I personally have a very hard time taking off my trainer hat and putting on my official hat, which is why I don't officiate that much anymore, in addition to the fact that I can't move, and I can't stand, and I can't do all the physical stuff. I know that as a hide setter, I can have a lot of difficulty not just setting a training hide, particularly for upper levels. You have to know how you can meet the requirements while not over-facing the team, and this bleeds into something else, that as an official, it is not your job to try to fail people. That is not why you are officiating. For the organizations, and at the level that I know of them, and I'm not an expert in all of them by any means, from my understanding, none of them have been designed with the premise of taking cues away from people that they otherwise should have earned, that an official should walk into a space expecting to take points away from people. That's not the way that I understand any of the organizations in the United States have been designed. As an organization, when we receive results for trials, and the cue rate is abysmal just across the board, that's a problem, because especially at this point in this stage of the sport, there are a lot of really experienced people and dogs, and for those organizations that require everyone to start at the bottom level and work their way up, if you have 40 dogs at a trial, and 25 of them are elite level dogs, and they're entering at a novice level trial, I am assuming that most of those dogs are going to be getting that cue. I mean, that's just simple math. That's just assuming that unless everything went left, they have the training, they have the background, they should be able to get that. If those dogs can't get that hide for a novice level search, that's a huge problem. Now, there is a way that you would be able to work on this, and this is something that again, feeds into what I think frustrates organizations, is as an official, you have to hone your craft. You have to practice. This isn't something that just means that you have to just go out and officiate non-stop. The same thing that I try to tell people, don't just trial non-stop as a competitor, you have to train. You have to train yourself as an official too, and that means holding those mock trials are super important. Figure out what works, and what doesn't in a safe environment that's safe for everybody. You get to hone your craft, and the competitors get to practice, which they desperately need, and everybody wins. If you're just constantly putting yourself out there to officiate and you're never taking the opportunity to improve yourself, it's not going to go well. It's just something that I would urge any official to do, that if you are officiating on any kind of regular basis, please take the time to go and schedule some mock trials for people. It'll make a world of difference. First of all, it will really help your clients and these competitors. They'll help you too, to see what works, and to see what doesn't, and to hone your craft. The other thing as far as an organization side that can be very problematic is officials who are constantly questioning the rules. Now, I want to say this carefully. I don't mean someone who reads the rules and says, "That doesn't make any sense," or, "I have a question about the rules," or even, "I am playing devil's advocate about the rules," or, "I want clarification about the rules." That's fine. Bring that up to the organization, and then see what the reasoning is, and then see if they'll be able to fix stuff. I'm talking about officials who in the middle of a trial are bashing the rules, or are bashing the way that an organization is set up, or saying anything negative even about not maybe that organization, but another organization. Oh, don't do that. Please don't. The dog world can already be gossipy enough, and it can be very cliquey. That's not the place to do it at a trial, particularly as an official, because you are speaking for the organization. On the one hand, it wouldn't make any sense for you to be speaking on behalf of the organization and then in the same breath be taking down that organization. It's like, "Well, why are you officiating then?" It's even worse if you're then standing up as the official and saying, "Well, I'm officiating for organization A, but organization B, C, and D are terrible, and this is why." That has no place at a trial, and as an organization, that is a ton of blow back that the organization gets from people who play at those other organizations, and they should. There's no reason why everyone should be in their own little box. We want more dogs playing, that's the whole point. We want to play more. If there are people who want to participate in the trial that you're officiating for organization A, but they also compete in organization B, C, and D, that's not bad, that's okay. That's a good thing. It's not like a team thing or a loyalty thing for you to say that those organizations have no idea what they're doing, because they probably do. Maybe you don't agree with them, and that's fine, but it doesn't have any place in a trial. Again, just from an organization's standpoint, know that if you are to do that as an official, it causes a ton of problems, and it can also cause problems for you personally, so just try not to do that. Okay, once again, we've reached that point in the episode that you're saying, "Fantastic, you've made me feel terrible." I hope I didn't. Again, these are just pointing out some of the extremes, some of the largest issues that can happen, but I have to say, and I'm very happy about this, that for the organization that I work with, we have upwards of 107 judges, I think, nationally right now. We have something like 20 CSDs, something around there, so there are a lot of officials for this organization, and I have to tell you that I don't get that many complaints, which is nice. I have to say, I don't mind. It's not like I'm waiting for more. The vast majority of people who are entering and applying to be an official are doing it for the right reasons. They have the expertise, they have the background, and they're going about it completely fine. The point of this episode, and the point of this podcast, is to point out to you what you should try not to do, and things you should try to avoid, or things you can do to try to improve, and things you can do to try to help yourself. Just to reiterate, be organized, know the rules, communicate with your trial host, communicate with your competitors as far as creating that human bond, the human connection. That really does make a difference. Make sure that you're not just walking in there as though you have solved all the world's problems. People will respect you on how you carry yourself. You don't have to go in there with a resume. Make certain that you are keeping up on your own craft. Give yourself the opportunity to do those mock trials, to officiate outside of a sanctioned trial environment. It will help you. It will also help the competitors and the community at large. The other thing that I would urge you to do if you're an official is to do everything that you can to remember what it feels like to be a competitor, so make sure that you are competing with your dog, even if you just run them in mock trials. Remember what that feels like. Try to put yourself in the shoes of what these people are going through. Remember what it feels like to go through your very first trial, so that you can be empathetic, because that will help you. It will also help prevent burnout, that if you're able to really view every single search with enthusiasm, and joy, and even, "Oh, they didn't get it, but they were trying really hard." That can help you as an official not feel so overwhelmed, and not be so exhausted at the end, and also, it prevents burnout. I have to tell you, that if you're approaching this the wrong way, you can absolutely begin to dread officiating. It will just turn into a real chore. Not even a job, it's something that you dread, which is terrible. Always re-evaluate things. If you are getting requests to officiate, and you're kind of sitting on responding to them, you're like, "Well, you know, I don't know," maybe you need to take a break, and you're allowed to take breaks. You are a person, and a human being who has a life, you have your own dogs, you have things that you want to do. It's okay. I would rather as an organization, an official contact me and say, "You know what? I've done a bunch of trials lately, and I really need to take like six months off. I just need to focus on some other stuff." I would so much rather that they do that than to keep signing up for trials because someone asked, and then not handling themselves well. I also want to make sure that they're happy. Lastly, just know that at any point in this process, you may determine that, "You know what? I liked officiating to begin with. I took a break and I went back to, and you know what? I just don't think I enjoy it." That's okay too. You're allowed to change your mind. If you decide that you don't want to be an official anymore, just let the organization know. That's okay. This is a job, but it should be one that you enjoy, because you have such a huge influence on the trial. This is something that you're passionate about as far as Scent Work, which most of us are. I would hate for you to sour your passion because you're doing something that maybe wasn't a good match for you to begin with. These are just some things to keep in mind. Again, I'm hoping that I didn't leave anyone in the fetal position crying. That wasn't the point. I have a lot of empathy, and I have a lot of understanding, and I have a lot of respect for people who step up to be officials, because this is a very difficult job. It requires a lot of you, and without officials, we can't have trials, so you are so incredibly important, and you are appreciated. Competitors who see a official who is professional, and trying, and earnest, and organized, and is just a good person to work with and be around, they love those officials, and when they see their name on the premium and they go, "Yes, I'm going to have a great trial." If you don't do those things, and they see your name on the premium and they go, "Uh, this is the only one coming up. I guess I'll give it a whirl," or they won't enter that trial. When you're doing those things, you're hitting all those bases, it really is a gift that you are giving these people. I hope that helps to understand just how important you are, and the things that you can do to make things successful for yourself, for the competitors, for the host, and for the organization. Thank you so much for listening. I hope you found this podcast helpful. Happy training, and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Now that you've reviewed the year so far, you have probably recognized some things that did not turn out as planned. How do you feel?  Do you feel horrible about that? Crushed? How do you handle it when things don't turn out as planned? Disappointments. They happen. I've heard from a lot of you that you actually skip doing your monthly or quarterly review, because you know you didn't hit your goal and you don't wanna acknowledge it. But here's the thing: You have to acknowledge where you are in order to move forward. You have to come face to face with both disappointments and triumphs so that you can make an effective plan for what's next. I lead all new Starship Captains through Chart Your Stars before we make a plan or take classes because getting oriented in where you REALLY ARE is the most important step. Nothing can move forward until you know you're starting from. In the spirit of acknowledging those goals-that-don't come true, the disappointments and how hard it is, I'll share a story in my own life, that's been unfolding over the last 3 years. As many of you longtime listeners know, 3 years ago, Jay quit his office day job to work part-time in my business and part-time in the local comic shop, that we intended to buy. We were both super excited - I was proud because this meant that my biz went from being around 70% of our income to 100% of our income. I think this is especially meaningful to me, because SO MANY people assume that my husband has been supporting me financially throughout my business. He has been supporting me emotionally, but my biz income has always been 60% or more of our annual income. This is my own thing I need to work on - I need to not care what people think and the stupid assumptions they make. But, ya know, it felt good to answer the "and what does your husband do?" question with "he works in my business". He was excited, because this allowed him to learn the comic shop business, while getting to know the people who would be his customers and build relationships. But, after 2 1/2 years...it didn't work out. The owner didn't give us what we needed for the banks, when we needed it and it became clear (to me) that he wasn't ready to sell. After 6 intense months of it almost happening, but with lots waiting and hoping, it was official - we weren't going to be buying the shop. This was September 2017. That was a huge disappointment. And Jay needed to take time to just grieve that (it helps that we know we did everything possible and by the end of the process, we just wanted it to be over). And it totally changed our lives because Jay stopped working 6 days a week at the comic shop and was suddenly home....all the time. We decided he should wait a minute before getting another job. He could do more in my business, he could travel with me, we'd have such a freer life if he wasn't tied down by hours. It would give him a chance to think about how we could still reach the dream of owning a shop, but without buying THIS shop. And we'd already been living off my income, so nothing there changed. We did have a good time - he went to San Francisco with me in October, then we spent a week with my parents in Oregon. We had a great holiday season without the stress of juggling schedules. (All of our parents require a road trip to visit, so now we could!). But when it came to just daily work time, I have to be honest. It was really really hard. I need either total silence or coffee shop white noise and Jay is...chatty. And loving. He took such good care of me and our home during those months, but it felt like I was always balancing work with family, even in hours that we both agreed should be about work. My daily routines really slid, and here's the thing - even if Jay said nothing to me all day, it just felt different with him here all day. But we didn't get much time to get used to that, because in February a friend with a sick kid asked Jay for help with his shop...and Jay stepped in. At first a little, and then a lot. I've talked about it a lot on Essential Enthusiasm podcast (you do listen to that, right?), but Jay is an Obliger. And around April, after months of bouncing between my business and his friend who needed help, he told me: I feel I'm constantly doing what people are obliging me to do and NOT what I need to be doing to move forward on my goal (I know you obligers feel him on that). What he wanted was to feel like he was moving forward on the future comic shop and the biggest thing that would make that possible is MONEY. So although he can support me in tangible ways that will lead to my business growing, he can't directly do things in my business that makes money. No one can. I get a lot of help, I hire people to do things like edit videos and put together podcast posts, but what that does is free up my time and focus to do the stuff that directly money. For Jay to feel like he's working on his dream, he needs to see the direct result. Here's another factor: I was having some...not-great-mental health months. One of the lies my anxiety tells me is that I will never feel like myself again. And that by not feeling like myself, my whole business will fall apart. And when my business is 100% of our income? Our whole life will fall apart. I definitely wouldn't say I felt pressured...I loved that my biz was supporting us. But when it came to thinking about growth... I definitely felt a kind of existential dread and that dread took away all of my creativity. I couldn't see all these amazing ways to grow or improve my business, because I was wrapped in "OMG WHAT IF IT ALL FAILS". So he decided to get a day job. So that he can contribute directly to our family's dreams. And this isn't going to make any sense for the international listeners, but I just have to tell you, that the health insurance was a deciding factor. Although my insurance is ¼ of Jay’s monthly pay, it’s still less than we were paying before, out of pocket. I realize for most people, getting a job that has insurance, that pays pretty well for our area, for a person with a BA in history, is ONLY GOOD NEWS. It is such a blessing. But I'll admit my biz ego was a little disappointed, because this is NOT the direction I thought we were moving. I thought we both would never have traditional employment again. We were going to own a retail shop! And yet, I have to admit, it's been great. In just the two weeks he's been working, I have gotten so much done! OMG! I am alone for 8 hours every day, which is just so restorative. And even though his job won't be contributing to our bills (we're using it pay off debt + save for the future), it loosened something in my head, it relieved some pressure I didn't know I was feeling and I have been SO much more able to be creative about the next direction in my business. I’ve had SO MUCH clarity in the last 2 weeks, it's just unbelievable. So, that is our tale of not reaching our goal and things not going as planned. I wanted to share it with you, because I think it's our tendency to look at everyone else and assume they are where they want to be. Or that things are going pretty easily. Or that if they've hit one big goal (like a six figure business), everything else just comes easily. I also wanted to talk about it, because a lot of people dream of quitting day jobs, or even retiring their spouse and I gotta tell you - it's not always fun, easy or fulfilling for both people. Life changes, and what you want changes. Your mission isn't to hit some certain milestone, it's to create a LIFE that you like, and maybe a business (or maybe not!) that supports that life. My brother, who works at a tech startup in San Diego told me one time (when I was making about $40,000/year and he was making $60,000), "I don't know why you are so concerned that you do work that is what you want to do with your time. You know you could just get a job that pays enough for you to do the stuff you want with your non-work time." At first I thought, ugh no, that sounds horrible, but then I realized - in our online biz world we romanticize loving what you're doing with every minute. But even in a business you LOVE you're going to do things you don't like. And as you build that dream? You're going to do a lot of things you don't like. You're going to work hard, you may need to do other work to pay the bills or to finance your art. By the way, I reminded by brother that I didn't get a BA in computer security like he did, mine is in French Lit. I'm pretty unemployable, and spending time grinding away while making not-much was a long term investment into the business I have today that pays me well, doing what I care passionately about. But that's not the right answer for everyone, in every situation. To sum up, when things don't go as planned, remember: Acknowledging what isn't going the way you wanted, helps you get oriented to where you are now. You have to start any plan from where you are. You are not alone. It's not supposed to be different (it's easy to think "I should already be passed this" "I shouldn't have these struggles” but you’re not the only one who does). Take time to grieve and to flop about. Try things to see if they work for you. Notice what's not working for you (like Jay did) and know you can always make a different choice. Sometimes that choice might look like something you didn't think you'd do. That's ok, if it's the right next thing for you. If something you dreamed of just isn't working for you. That's ok too. You're allowed to change your mind. I thought having my biz employ both of us and having Jay around all the time would be great. I was wrong. Keep changing your dreams as you change. Don't give up. All of this is just details. Identify the BIG THING you care about, the ONE THING that matters to you and organize everything around that. As long as that is still what you want, let go of all the details and focus in on it. To help you set goals from this place, this place of focusing on what REALLY matters, I'm sharing a worksheet called "Creating Do-Able Goals". Oh. Okay, okay. What's happening? I need this tripod back. Oh my God, you will not even believe what I'm doing to my Chanel handbag down there on this rock. I just, I cannot see. Do you think I need my sunglasses, or do you think the sun is going to play nicely with me? Okay, hey peoples of the internet. I have the things to tell you. Hello Shannon, what's happening? Okay. I'm going to jump off the rock ... face down. Okay, please work internet. I want to share this over to my page. Do you back yourself fully in your business? What about the rest of your life? That is our topic. I've got some ass kickery for you. I'm gonna jump down. Okay, I'm coming back. I've gotta climb up, oh my God. Okay, I can't get up. All right, I had to go the lazy way around. Okay, the internet keeps fucking up. Okay, Joseph, I noticed that every time you come on my live steams, you say your name. Hello, hello, Joseph, I can see your name though, from your profile. I'm gonna give you guys an ass whooping, is that all right? I'm just trying to figure out, should I switch to my phone data? Why are you putting your phone number in dude? What's happening? Did I ask for dates on the internet or he's telling something? I'm looking rocky. That's cause I'm rocky as fuck. I don't know if that's a good thing or not. I've decided to back myself in my love life. How do you feel about that people? I'm gonna kick my own ass about that. I did just kick my ass. I was just on the phone with a private client just now doing a VIP session. Things got a little bit heated. I'm wearing your favourite leggings. Wait until you see my leggings that have "Grateful as Fuck," written on my ass. Actually, I think it just says, "Gratitude," or it says "Grateful," I don't know. I don't look at my own ass often enough. Brandon Marshall is bringing it like a soul brother. Thank you. Thank you for backing me there. Okay, I thought I was gonna get in trouble. Someone stopped. All right, what about ... Do you know what's hilarious you guys? When I jump into the search bar on my Facebook on my laptop, and I'm searching for my own page so that I can then share the live stream. The thing that's hilarious is that I can then see the search history, and the search history of my personal Facebook is stuff that my team have searched when logged into my profile, as well as obviously stuff that I've searched. I swear to God, sometimes the cat ninjas are using my profile to Facebook stalk, and fan girl stalk people that they're interested in or something, so that it doesn't come up on their profile, or something like that. Because I'm like, what is up with this search history? What do you guys think you're doing? What's happening? All right, why is this live stream not coming up so that I can share it? I'm not gonna sell a couch, but I'll sell you this delightful rock that you can come and sit on with me. It's beautiful. What do you want me to give you? Can you stop with the frick ... What are you guys doing? Yeah, I should use Live Leap. I'm so lazy at remembering to use things. Okay. Here's the deal, right? This is gonna get preachy. I'm just gonna warn you. I'm gonna remind you in case you didn't remember, in case you've forgotten. Do not fucking forget. Can someone share this to daily ass kick? 'Cause my sharing thing is not working. Do not forget ... Oh, don't even worry about it. I'll share it later. Do not forget that there's a one day event happening with me in New York on Tuesday, if you wanna come spend the day with me on New York on Tuesday. One day, VIP, intimate event, and then one day even with me at Soul Shift and Money Making in San Diego the next Tuesday, which is April third. So, if you wanna come along to either of those, or you'd like to know more, there's a couple of places left in both of them. Message me on my personal page is best, and I'll get you those details. I wish I had my sunglasses, but right now the bottom of this tripod, because the rock down there is on an angle, so I've elevated the back two legs of the tripod by chucking my Chanel handbag down there on the rock and sticking the back two legs of the tripod into the bag, and my sunglasses are in the bag. So, it presents somewhat of a dilemma. But we'll figure it out. So, I'm on the phone just now, with my client, and essentially we were talking about the fact that she's always trusted in herself and that's how she's got results in her life in different areas, but that when it comes to business and getting the results that she wants in her business, and this was our first one on one call, right? She's doing a VIP one on one trial session with me, that she's noticing this feeling of basically well should I? Should I go and follow along with what such and such people are teaching or saying that I should do, whoever such and such people happen to be. The people who are commonly or uncommonly known as the gods of the internet, self appointed. Now, obviously we can all self appoint ourselves as anything, but ... This tripod is self appointing itself as a little bit of a biotch. I'm worried it's gonna fall over and then I'll have to quickly jump off the rock and grab it. Okay, it's under control. All right. So, you know, we've all done this. Give me a love hot shower if you've done this, or if you ... Hopefully I'm not gonna fall off the edge of this rock. I'm sitting with one ass cheek off the edge of it. I don't know why I do the things I do. I just like to live on the edge, literally, on the edge of this rock. There's an ass cheek hanging off. Oh. It's gonna be fine. Okay. Give me a love hot shower if you do this. You're already giving the love hot showers and I didn't even ask the question. You guys are on the ball. You're level as fuck. You're playing tight. It's very stypical of our community, and if you don't know the new words of the community then figure it out. We do this where we question ourselves, right? And we start to wonder, are you doing this in your business? You start to wonder, maybe I should do it the way that these internet marketing people say to do it. Maybe I should do like the 26 fricking copy written emails, or whatever it is, right? And you wonder if you should follow these different systems or strategies to build a funnel, or to build recurring income, or build any fucking thing, I suppose. Or in general, you just start to wonder whether you should do it like how other people are doing it. But then at the same time, and there's nothing wrong with learning from other people, by the by. Obviously. But then at the same time, there's a part of you, it's a big fucking part I think, which is just oo, this is gross, right? Like, it feels disgusting. Give me love hot shower if you relate to that, and I swear to God, this sun is just like, I'm gonna get you bitch. I'm right in your eyes, and I'm not backing down. I've just had a fantastic idea. I could turn around the other way. That would make actually a hell of a lot more sense because I'm literally sitting here like a squinty eyed squirrel. All right. I'm gonna, oh fuck. I'm gonna sit on this rock down here. Okay, oh my God. Now I can see nothing. Do you know one time I helped my ex husband launch a programme online called Rock Hard Results? It was a great programme name. Now I can see nothing. So, it's actually even worse now. We're figuring it out. It's a team effort. I'm totally in the dark now though, so I don't think that's better. Okay. See, here I can see but here ... Okay. Don't revolve around the sun. Let the sun revolve around me. I like it. Okay. Here's the rule. I'm gonna try and cut to the chase. I have a habit of rambling on. I don't know if you've noticed. The rule is, if your soul is staying disgusting, like if something inside of you is just like this is oo, right? E-U, like ugh. This is gross and it feels gross inside my body, and it feels scaly on my skin to be taking action like this, or to imagine that I should do so, then if you feel that, then that's how it is. That's the rule, okay? This current situation makes no sense at all. I'm gripping the tripod between my feet in order for it to not fall over. So, this is requiring massive inner strength of abductors, which is my inner thighs. I already have inner thighs like that woman on James Bond that kills a man with her thighs. My inner thighs are extremely toned and tight and strong. And they're now getting stronger by the moment. I hope you guys appreciate the effort because I did already work out today. I don't know why I can't just let it be easy. I just like, my room is like right there. I could be sitting in my room live streaming, but it's very dark. And it's not as fun as being on a rock gripping a tripod between your legs. So, anyway. I'm getting there, right? I'm getting to the point. I think I said what I needed to say already. The point is back yourself. When are you gonna finally back yourself, okay? So, I was using an example with my client. I was like, listen to me. You already know ... This is what I wanna say to you now. You already know that everything you feel inside of you is real. You already know that the way that you're being directed to do it through your soul is the way that it's gonna work. You already know that if you were to go against your own soul, and your own nature, and you were to essentially go and try and do ... In a way that ... Okay, I think it just kept freezing. In a way that feels kind of icky to you, or it's just boring, it's not interesting, it's not expansive, it feels really, do I really have to do that? Oh, okay, I guess I better. That's what's gonna get me a result. Okay. And it's kind of like this head hanging type of feeling, right? If you were to do it in that way, you know that it's not only not gonna work, you know this at your core, right? You might be buying into a story, you might be telling yourself all manner of things that are definitely not true. You might be trying to justify and convince, you might be like, "Well, that person knows better than me", or, "They're further along than me and maybe I don't really know because I haven't achieved that goal yet", whatever your goal is, right? In your business. And so, "They probably do know better, and I probably should do it this way", and you're going down this pathway of essentially trying to convince yourself to not back yourself, which when you put it that way, sounds really kind a crazy, and not good crazy. And it sound sad I think, as well, right? And then the other side of the coin, the flip side of that is you 100% know, give me a love hot shower, give me a love shower about this, you 100% know, if you agree with me give me a love hot shower. You 100% know that what's inside of you is real. You know that the things you feel inside of you about where your success is gonna come from is correct. And one thing that I love to journal on again, and again, and you might like to save this as an idea for later, and write it down as a journaling prompt, or somebody can put it in the comments if you want because I'm having a hard time getting my laptop to work here. I like to journal often on where do I ... A question I've asked myself many times over the years, where do I really believe, for example, my hundred million dollar empire is gonna come from, or before I was already making multi millions a year, then I would journal on where do I really believe my multi million dollar business is gonna come from, or where do I really believe my fame or my impact, or whatever it is, is gonna come from. So, the thing that's a big thing for me at the moment is soul mate love. Being in a soul mate relationship, right? That is kind of the biggest focal area for me, or the thing that I've not achieved yet. And I now and trust that I will. So, if I would tune in and journal on where do I really believe that that level of love and romance is gonna come from, and being in a relationship with my soul mate, and then I would look at some of the crazy ass shit that I've done over the past 18 months, since I became single, since I left my marriage, I went through this period, I went through initial period of what did the fuck, where the fuck do I even start? I don't even know what dating means, I don't even know how to do that. I've been in long term relationships for 15 years at the time. I'd literally been in long term relationships since my first ever boyfriend. So, it's like I don't even know what I the means to date, right? So, that was ... Being a brand new entrepreneur on the internet, like what's a lead page? I didn't even know. I'm like, "What do you do and a date? I don't even know." I don't know, somebody tell me. I don't think I ever even went on a date with my first two husbands. I think we just somehow became in a relationship after meeting at the gym. I literally had no clue. And then, I went through the next phase, which I feel like is what all entrepreneurs who are driven, motivated, bad asses like we have here too. The next phase is, well you know what? I'm a high achiever, and I'm a good student of life, right? Okay, finally this is gonna let me share it, so let's share it. I'm a good student of life, and I like to do really well at stuff, and I'm committed, and I will get good results, and so I'm gonna go and learn how to do it properly. Who's done that as an entrepreneur? Right? You go along and you're like, give me an amen or a hell yes or something on the comments if you've done that as an entrepreneur. You go, "I wanna do this properly. So, I'm gonna go and learn from the best people about how to market, and how you build an audience online, and how you sell a programme, or how you make a programme in the first place", or whatever it might be. And so, you go along and learn, and because the vast majority of people out there are teaching some kind of non thinking system, like join these dots, do it this way, here's the right way, here's the wrong way, that's probably what you fall into, right? And there's only a very limited number of people out there who teach like I teach around business and entrepreneurialism, which is follow fucking flow and soul intuition, fuck everything else. There are no rules, there is no right or wrong. Let's tune in, let's get you connected to soul, let's get you back to what you've always known. Let's act from that place and then sure, if you wanna know a few little, if there's things you literally don't know, you never heard of what a lead page is and you wanna know, cool. We can learn that, but actually you don't even need that to be successful and to make money, right? So, for me, if we relate it back to the dating thing, I did that same thing. At first, I was like, "I don't even know what dating is. I literally have no clue what that means or how to do it." I've heard the word, and I am 38 years old so in theory I have some sort of concept around it, but I'm not sure. Somebody's gonna have to tell me. So, then I started hiring coaches. Now, fortunately I hired an amazing sex and love coach to start with who helped me connect with intuition and flow, which was my good friend Alexa Martinez, and cannot recommend her highly enough. She's actually doing a soulmate manifestation free challenge this week on her Facebook page, so worth checking out. And that was amazing, and that just taught me so much about, oh my God. I was like, "What? Oh my God. All these crazy things I've felt inside of me about what I really want from romance in a relationship, you're telling me that's okay? You're telling me I can even have that? You're telling me I've got permission to be me? What? You're telling me I should tell men how I feel?" I was like, mind is blown, right? So, same thing as well. I teach a lot of people around business, but then after that, I got kind of, I did that for a little bit, and then I just, I got pulled in, right? And we all do it. You get pulled in and distracted by, if you're on Facebook for example, you're gonna get pulled in and distracted by so many fricking people on the internet who are telling you the right way to make money, or to sell an online programme, or to do anything at all. And so, I got pulled in, and I jumped on a few different mailing lists for example, with people who would send out, "Here's 10 scripts to get him to respond in a text message." Stuff like that. Or here's how to say this, or here's what never to say to a man, or here's 10 reasons why he's lost interest in you. Stuff like that. And I was on these mailing lists, and I did some coaching with people who teach like this as well. I paid for some coaching with people who teach like this, because I was like that newbie entrepreneur, who's like, "But I don't know. And I don't know if I know what I know, and I haven't had success in this area yet. I've had two failed abusive marriages, and ..." Okay, stuff that was on me as well. Let's just be clear and on that, all right? I don't wanna be blaming and doing anything like that. But I've had two marriages that didn't work out, and clearly I have no fucking clue what I'm doing, and how do I know how to choose right? So, I should go and learn from an expert, right? And we all do that with business, or we've all done that. I did the same thing with business. I know so many entrepreneur who can relate to having done that in business, but yet I was getting this information and I was getting to taught these things and the whole way through, when I would be told, "Okay, say this in a text. Oh no, don't ... What? You were thinking of saying that to him? Don't say that. Never say that to a man. That's a terrible idea." And then, there would be this feeling inside of me like, oo, really? I did even send ... I think I did it like two or three times, where I used a little script from a text messaging thing. And I kind of thought it was funny, I was laughing at it, but I was also like, this is kind of gross, right? It feels icky. It feels like, yuck. And it's kinda like, really? And then, a few times where I didn't speak my truth in a romance situation because I was listening to the advice of coaches at the time who were like, "No, no. That's coming from a hurt place inside of you, or that's something you need to heal inside. Don't say that. And this is the right way to communicate with a man, and this is how to do it. And I was like, ugh. And something inside of me was shrinking, right? I was feeling contracted. I was feeling like maybe they're right? Because I don't know, and I'm not an expert, and I don't have results in those areas. So, maybe I should listen to them and I'm willing to try it, and I said that. And I spoke up. I was like, "I don't really feel ... But okay. I'm open to it." And they were like, "Yeah, well ..." They were basically like, without saying you're wrong and I'm right, that's basically what they were saying. They were like, "Well, this is how it works. I'm right, do it this way." I was like, "Okay." And then I just didn't follow through though. I didn't follow through. In the end, I sent the fucking letter that I wanted to send to a guy, even though everybody said don't send that letter, right? Or everybody who you asked, which is a very small group of people. But my coach, and one or two friends, and in the end I was like, "Fuck it. I've always spoken my truth in business, and I'm gonna speak my truth in this area as well." Because here's what I know for sure. Anything that's feeling contractive, anything that's feeling like it's actually making me feel sad to follow that method if I would follow the method of that particular person or coach, or whatever. Or the strategy that's being taught online around dating, it's making me feel sad and contracted, and icky all at the same time, anything you're feeling like that in business, or think that you should be doing but it makes you feel that way relevant to business, I'm gonna tell you flat out 100, 1000, one million percent, all the percents, gathered into a big percentage bucket, don't do that shit. It's not gonna work for you. And by the way, if you got some kind of supposed outcome from doing stuff that goes against your soul, do you think it's gonna make you feel happy and fulfilled? So, for me with the dating stuff, I just started to remind myself, and this is kind of what I was kicking my client's ass around just now on the phone, I just started to remind myself that all of my results in my entire life, back to when I was a child, and even in my business before I got results and how many results, I had to remind myself of thins and getting into believing in myself, and coming from faith, and coming from self belief before I had the results to back it. Every result has come from when I trusted in myself, and anytime that I achieved any sort of success, quote unquote success, by doing something that went against my soul and that didn't feel right, it made me feel icky or it made me feel contractive, or it made me feel sad, then that success meant nothing to me. I have made money in the past by doing stuff that wasn't my soul work. I've never done anything that's felt like immoral, or completely wrong or something, but I've done plenty of stuff to make money in business where it was like, "Oh, really? Yeah, okay. All right, I guess. Because I want the results and so I'll suck it up." And when I did make money doing things that way, it slipped through my fingers. I didn't even fucking care. It meant nothing. It was not fulfilling. So, I started to think about the dating, and I was like, "But if it's true. If it's true that if I would say it in this way and follow, and learn these scripts until they become automated inside of me so that I'm communicating properly, as how you're supposed to communicate to a man. If that's true, then how could I possibly end up in a fulfilled soul relationship for me?" Because it would have been based on me not being me. Every step along the way it would've been based on me going ... Me being me, and who I am in this moment in time, with all my faults, and all my uncertainties, and all my weaknesses, me being me is not enough to get that relationship. I would have to catch a man by saying things right. Hello, what kind of fucking relationship's that gonna be, right? Just like what kind of fucking business is that gonna be that's built on a foundation of not a beautiful rock like this? It's not built on a solid rock foundation. How cool is that? I'm sitting on a rock. I'm super excited. Look, here's the rest of the rock where I was sitting before. I was up there. Now I'm just on a lower bit, but there's all these little rocky foundations all the way around. I'm in Orlando. So, I just ... It was like a wake up call. It was like, hello. How do you wanna believe in yourself, right? Like, hello. Where do you ... What foundation do you want this relationship to come from? Hello, do you actually wanna choose to believe that if you speak your truth, and be you, that that's not enough? And I was like fuck that shit. I'm gonna start saying exactly what I want, I'm gonna chose to back myself, I'm gonna chose to trust myself. And like the particular situation with a particular guy where everything that I wanted to say to him was breaking all the rules, like don't say that. I was like, "You know what? I'm gonna fricking say it, and then some." And the stuff I said was like, stuff you definitely aren't supposed to say to a guy. And my choice was that if I would be myself fully, and it didn't work, then that's exactly perfect and what was meant to be. And my choice was also that actually it's impossible to screw up being me, because when I be me and back myself and trust in myself, only good and positive outcomes can come from that. And so now, I feel 100%, I'm fricking so in trust and in certainty around where I'm going in the relationship area of my life, and I know that I'm getting the results that I desire. Awesome Nicole, thank you for jumping on first. All right. Janice says, "I feel this icky energy nine hours a day." Soulmate relationship and not backing myself in business, [Keja 00:22:05]. That's exactly the same situation that was happening with the client that I was just on the phone to, right? We were talking about a similar conversation to this, but obviously personal to her, and it was exactly the same. She's got the results in her health and fitness, and in her relationship, and then we're talking about the fact that you know, and this is why I was using the relationship example to her. I was saying to her, I know that me being in a relationship with my soulmate, it's gonna come from me being fully me, and I know that it's about me speaking my truth, trusting my own inner guidance, and anybody who's basically trying to direct me or tell me what to do, whether it's somebody random on the internet, or someone who I'm personally speaking to, if it goes against what feels right inside of me, then I know that it's not right for me, and I know that that's not how I'm gonna get the results that I want in my life, and I know that I just don't have it within me to do stuff that doesn't align for me on a soul level. I know that in business, to get to where my business makes millions of dollars a year, and I have only 100% soul mate clients who are so fricking cool and badass and do the work, for that to happen, I had to fully back myself. I didn't have money. I was over $100 000 in debt. I was gonna go bankrupt, I couldn't even buy coffee, and I realised I was one foot in and one foot out. I knew inside of me, I just knew that I was born for more. I knew I'm gonna get those results. I had the faith inside of me, and I believed that I could make money doing what I love, and doing this and speaking my truth every day, and just hanging out and being fully me, and not being worried about if I'm professional and whatever else, but I wasn't backing myself. I was one foot over there, and one foot, "Oh, maybe I should do it your way? Maybe, okay. It doesn't feel good, but okay. You have more results than me so I probably should do that." And then eventually I was like fuck this shit. I'm gonna fully back myself, and if I have to do that every single day for the rest of my life, and never make money, then that's gonna be fulfilling to me rather than living a life of if I follow your rules and do it this way, maybe then I'll get a result that I won't even fucking care about because it didn't come from flow. So, that's what I apply over now to the relationship area. I'm like, this is like a done deal. 100% the results that I desire are gonna come from me backing myself and trusting in myself. Somebody said, "What about if you being yourself will cause others to shun you?" Which is a great question. Well, they will. They will. They will. I'm gonna tell you a great answer about that. First I'm gonna open my laptop, because I just saw that my brother WhatsApp'd me. It came up at the top of my phone. He doesn't know I'm sitting here waiting for him live streaming. He's asked me what time we should leave for dinner. So, I don't know. How long's it take to get from fricking, a Disneyland resort to downtown Orlando? Let me just message him back. Don't know. Can you check? Downtown Orlando. Am on a live stream. All right, cool. Did that work? I don't know. We'll see. Okay, so here's my answer. How are you gonna feel about whether people shun you. The reason I'm at a Disneyland resort, I'm so not a Disneyland person. I actually really don't like Disneyland. I don't like a lot of people around me, and I just don't like Disneyland. I don't like rides. Sorry all the people who love Disneyland. You can hate on me for it if you want, because we're at a conference here, and I'm like playing hooky on the conference because I'm not really a conference person either. So, that's why I'm sitting on a rock on a live stream, instead of being in a conference. So, he's in the conference room and he's just messaged me about dinner. All right. So, yesterday I found out that in certain groups on the internet, of Facebook groups, that people talk all the time about what a bitch I am, right? And how they can't handle my life streams. And I'm just like, okay. I'm just gonna say something directly to those people right now. Just so you know, if you say that you can't even, even, with me, and you can't handle my live streams, and did you see what she did on her latest live stream, I'm just gonna point out the obvious, which is that the only way you know that is because you're watching the fucking live steam. So, technically that makes you a magnetises fuck fan. Who's triggered as fuck, by the way. And if you are triggered and emotionally charged by me, that's because I'm being a mirror, and because I'm confronting in you something that you know you get to address inside of you, and basically probably you're gonna become a client in about a year, and then you're gonna tell me that you used to hate me and bitch about me behind the scenes but I already knew because other people told me. If you didn't actually care, if you weren't connected to me on a soul level in some sort of way, then you wouldn't watch the live streams, and you wouldn't bitch about me behind the scenes, and you wouldn't care. You'd be like, "I'm not interested. I'm not attracted to her. I'm not magnetised to her", and you would just not even observe. You literally wouldn't care, right? It happens all the time, Melissa. I actually was a little shocked because I'm so in a love bubble of my own cult and my own world that I've created that I haven't heard it for a while, but I used to be much more conscious of it, and to answer the person's question who asked about this, I knew about it more and I was conscious of it because I was concerned about it, and because it would cause me to shrink and be worried, and not speak my truth. And then I just gradually over time let go of that, because I still care. Yesterday I was like, I was triggered and I was a little hurt. I was like, "Oh." I was actually like, "Oh, I thought everybody loved me now." I really did. I was like, "Oh. Well, okay." And then I was like, "Oh, well technically I suppose I could ..." I do actually know that people don't like me but I kind of forgot because I'm only surrounded by love, so I was a little triggered, and I was kinda like, "I think I wanna go around to their houses and cook them dinner, and just sit them down and just explain to them, just so you understand, I'm a nice person." And I'm actually like really nice, and I'm really introverted and quiet in real life, and everything as well. I think you would like me, right? Like, really, I'm an actual ... I'll buy you a present. I'll bring you chocolates. I'll do that. I do that all the time anyway. So, I kinda felt like I need to deal with this situation so that people understand how awesome I actually am. But then the other part of me was like, not fuck them. I got into curiosity, and I think it's funny because the reason I said, I'm like, "Well, if you're watching my life streams, then it means you're a fan." Just technically. Just saying. So, I think it's funny. But also, even if I feel hurt, or even if I've lost people along the way, and I've lost friends, and I've lost some clients along the way who I got too much for them, I got too intense for them, and some of them came back and then they're like, "You've got too much for me. You got too intense for me. I couldn't handle it. It was like a trigger for me." One of my newest clients who joined my inner circle, first thing he did introducing himself is, "Oh, I'm probably like a lot of people here when I first came across Katrina Ruth, I wanted to punch her through the computer screen." I was like, "Aww. People say the sweetest things about me." And for real though, my clients say that all the time, right? So, it's really, really common and normal, oh, thank you. Thank you for the present in advance. So, anyway. My point is, I got to a point of understanding that my message and my art, and speaking my truth is more important and bigger than what people wanna say about me, right? And that I have to put that first. So, don't assume that somebody like me just doesn't care, or is so confident, because it's not that. I'm still hurt at the idea, and I don't like the idea, and quite honestly, even at a big conference like this, there's three and a half thousand people here, I'm conscious that there's people in this room, and some of them I know who they are, who really fucking don't like me and think I'm a bad person, or I'm too aggressive, or I'm unprofessional online, and that fricking annoys me, right? And I let it go, because in the end I have to be me, and I have to speak my truth, and even the real life friends how I've lost along the way, I've just been like okay, there's some sadness there, or sometimes there's a grieving process to go through depending upon who the person is in your life, and technically not just as friends, but really even my marriage was a fallout of me being fully me, right? There's many reasons that went into that, but it was. I'm so fully me that you can't have me in your life if you don't ... For somebody who's not fully being them in their life, and not fully pressing play, or they just, they disagree with my values or my beliefs, how can you keep me in your life, right? You can't. You're either gonna ... If I'm in your life, there's only two reasons for that. Either you really love me and you resonate so fucking fully with me, and we're basically come from the same glorious pot of souls, which is why when we hang out in real life we're gonna have the bestest time ever and I won't be hiding from you like I'm hiding from everyone else here. I know there'd be some cool people here, I just don't know where they are, right? For real though, whenever I meet any of my tribe or my clients, or people who follow me online and who are the same as me, when we meet in real life, we're instantly magnetically best friends because we're the same sort of person. Or there's the people who hate me. And if they actually say that they hate me, or they're like I can't stand her, or whatever, then actually it's because at their core, they're the same sort of person, and they're just not owning their truth. That's a reality, right? That's just how it is. Okay. What else? Where was I even up to? I am not who you think I am. I am ... You are who you think I am. Reflect your own truth. Thank you Ruby. You are also the most beautiful soul. Thank you for seeing that in me, and I reflect it back to you. I'm shooting it back to you like that super hero who shoots stuff out of there, like Spider Man who shoots his spiderweb out. I'm shooting back love and acknowledgement. All right, what else? So, anyway. I think one of the hardest things, in theory, it's a choice whether or not it's hard, is when you don't have the results yet. You don't have the money results, so you don't have whatever results you're having in your business. And you know, you know on a soul level what is right, and what is aligned, and how you're gonna get results, right? But you don't have the results. So, that voice comes up ... Maybe you have some other people who are lovely enough to tell you all the time that you're doing it wrong. Eliminate those people. I don't mean in a bad way. I just mean turn away from them energetically, or physically, or whatever else is required, right? Don't listen to them. Literally, la-la-la-la-la, can't hear you. Not listening. Choose to only listen to people that affirm what you already know inside of you, yeah? To me that seems obvious. But, mind you, I've definitely gone against that myself at some points in time. So, there's that. But then the other thing is it's not just the voices of other people, right? It's the voices, shit. It's the voices inside of your head. Those things are little bitches some of the time. And they come up every day and be like, "Really? Are you sure? Because that sounds kind of stupid to me. And besides which, how can you prove it? And I bet you're wrong. And I bet you're gonna screw everything up, and I bet probably if you do that, or say that, everybody's gonna tell everybody, and then the whole entire internet is gonna laugh at you because you're stupid." That's what the voices inside your head will say. Or it'll be like, "Who do you think you are to do that? Somebody else could do that, but clearly you have no clue what you're talking about. You don't have the results, you can't prove yourself, you don't speak properly, and your hair doesn't look good." And so, these are the normal every day thoughts that we all have. I have these voices inside of my head as well, and I know, I see them for what they are. I'm like, "Bitch please. I see what you're trying to do here, and I'm gonna let you know that I'm gonna be over here doing what I'm meant to do anyway." But sometimes they get to me. Sometimes they got to me with the dating stuff, right? And now I became stronger over time, because I just kind of thought back, and I thought back to my business stuff, and I'm like, "Hmm, well, took me like five fucking years, or however long, to really get this with my business, but then when I did, shit started working. When I fully backed myself. So, I think, thank you for coming along, and telling me all of your thoughts for today, and if you insist on carrying yourself around and following me everywhere, and talking shit, then I guess I can't stop you. I'm still gonna be over here pressing fucking play", and I'm gonna learn this lesson a lot faster, right? So, it's about realising that you can have these voices inside of your head, you can have the voice of doom and gloom, and self doubt, and whatever bullshit is going on or coming through you, or even coming at you from outside of you, all of that can be present and in attendance, and you can still do whatever you know what you're meant to do. And so, what that comes down to is you've gotta be bold enough, and trust enough to actually back it up and follow through though. It's not gonna be enough to feel and know inside of you what's true and what's gonna get you results. That is not gonna cut it. You're gonna have to back it with action, right? Which means, from my example, the dating example, it means that when I have an instinct or an impulse, or a soul nudge comes through me, like, "Hey, say that to this guy. Speak your truth. Say this", and my voice inside my head's gonna be like, "Oh my God, are you crazy? Don't say that. Really? You already said such and such thing. Like, really? You're gonna morally now? You're gonna say that?" And, "Oh, maybe I shouldn't, and maybe this, and then let's go check what he's posted on Facebook today because maybe that's gonna put me off because you don't know ..." Like, what? What if I just always followed my soul nudges? Because I can tell you something for sure, in my business now, and it took me however long it took me to get this, I always follow my soul nudges. That doesn't mean only when it feels exciting or inspiring. That means especially when it feels terrifying, when it feels reckless, it feels crazy, it goes against what everybody's saying, and I built a multi million dollar per year online empire where I get to do only what I fucking want everyday, and I have a 100% soul mate client base. My clients are now becoming millionaires and multi millionaires in the last year as well. Multiple clients who've gone from where they were making 8 to 10K a month at the start of last year to where they're now making 50, 60 and over 100K per month in numerous cases, over 200K per month consistently in multiple places as well, and all of these women and a few men who work with me, are doing what I'm talking about here, following soul nudges. And not only attracting such badass from only following soul desires, requirements, and flow. It's not just when it feels easy or comfortable or fun or exciting. It's when it feels terrifying. It's when it's scary. It's when it feels reckless. It's when it feels ridiculous, right? And here's something else. Let me just check in in what my brother's saying. He's just messaging me more. 36 minutes. Am on my way back. Okay. We can go for like 5 or 10 minutes more. Okay. Am on a rock. I'm telling him. Don't forget, if you jumped on late and you didn't hear me, I'm doing a one day VIP very intimate event this Tuesday in New York, and I'm repeating the same event the Tuesday after, April 3, in San Diego. These are soul shifting deep dive days to get clear on exactly who you are as an entrepreneur, who you wanna be as an entrepreneur, creator and leader, and the best fucking way for you to make fuckload of money and a fuckload of impact doing that. That was too many fucks. Maybe. Not maybe. Whatever it was. It's something like that. I can send you the whole written overview, so message me over on my Katrina Ruth personal page if you wanna know more about that. Okay, so then coming back to this. Here's how I actually got into this business, because as I've been sharing, I don't have the results yet, I'm like working towards these results in my romance side of my life, and I know that it will come from backing myself, but I also know that that means I can't just sit around being like, "Yeah, I believe that I'm gonna have a soulmate relationship, and I believe that it's gonna work out for me and I have faith." It means that I've also gotta follow all actions that my soul tells me to take, even though I feel like a fricking crazy person half of the time, okay? And the reason that I knew that first for business though, and where I can now apply it from business over to love, I knew it for business because when I was broke in my business, and when I was over $100 000 in debt, and I thought I was gonna go bankrupt, I sat down one day, and it's funny because I'm kind of at a theme park now. I'm at the resort anyway. And I was at a theme park. I was at a Wet and Wild theme park, like a water one. And I went and sat down for coffee, and I made this list and it was based on the fact that I'd been a personal trainer for 13 years before I built my own online business, and so I've now been actively involved in the fitness industry for 21 years, since I was 17 years old. And so, at the time, it was maybe like six years ago or something, so I would've been involved in the fitness industry at the time for like 15 years, and I had complete faith and certainty around my ability to always be in great shape. Now, it didn't mean that I always was in my ideal shape, because sometimes I would slip a little bit out or whatever, but it never was a problem. I was like, "I know how to be in fantastic fucking shape. It's very simple and straight forward, and easy, and it's just automatic that of course I get to have that." I have zero doubt, and also that it comes from me following what I believe is true and real for me inside me. Never once have I followed a diet plan. I've tried to do it a few times in years gone by, and I always was like cheating all the way through on those diets. And I don't follow structured training. All my training and my eating is intuitive. I even wrote a book about five or six years ago called Think Thin, The Intuitive Diet for Women. You can get it on Amazon if you go to books for kick ass women dot com, you're gonna see over 60 books on Amazon that I've self published, and Think Thin is one of them, right? So, that's my way of eating and staying in shape. So, I sat down and I thought about what if I had the same beliefs for business and for money that I have for fitness? What if I just always knew that I know what's right for me? What if I fully trusted in myself, what if I fully backed myself, what if I went from soul flow and intuition, and I basically sat there and I wrote a big list of what are all my beliefs to do with fitness and my body, and being in great shape? And they're all really powerful positive beliefs that would serve a lot of people well, as I'm sure you can imagine, right? And then I looked at what my money beliefs were at the time, and I had so many money and business beliefs around not trusting myself, or there's gotta be a wrong way, or something like a right way or a wrong way, or I've gotta get it right, or something along those lines, right? And other people maybe know more than me, and I've gotta do stuff that doesn't feel good, and just all these beliefs, and I literally sat there and I took all of my positive and powerful fitness beliefs and and I rewrote them into powerful positive beliefs for my business, and for money, and I just made a decision. I was like, that's how I'm gonna choose to think. I'm gonna choose to back myself, I'm gonna choose to trust myself, I'm gonna choose to basically operate from inside of me. And even last week I had another breakthrough around this, because I noticed that in my business there's still a couple of areas where I feel like I'm not fully showing up, right? Where I feel, you know that sense of disease, or feeling uneasy, or restless, or unsettled, because you feel like ... I had a general feeling that there's some discontent present in my business. And a general feeling of feeling like I notice that pretty much every day I feel slightly restless, like slightly, just like what am I missing? That was it. I journaled on why do I feel like there's always something missing in my business? I just have this niggle all the time, and I thought ... I said to myself, this was like the other day in Santa Monica, sitting in the tea and coffee bin. And I thought, "Well, I don't feel that way in fitness. I have like zero restlessness or niggles in fitness." Even if I go into [inaudible 00:40:58] and I'm in my little shorts and my sports bra, and I see that I got a bit puffy around the waste or something, it does not remotely bother me. I'm like, "That's fine. I know exactly how to fix it." Right? And I have only self love, right? Like I actually really, it took me several decades, but I really love and accept myself regardless of what my body's doing, and I have full trust, right? And I thought, "Why do I have such contentedness in fitness, but in business I still feel a little uneasy?" And I was like, "Oh my God." And I realised it's because with fitness and nutrition, I 100% follow every single soul command and desire and requirement. So, what that means is, like this morning, I was like, "I gotta go to Bikram Yoga this morning." Hot yoga. That's how I felt. That's what my body wants. Well, I had a schedule of going to a conference today. I'm like, "Too bad. I'm going to Bikram Yoga because that's what I feel I need." The zero of the time will I not follow soul urges in that situation, right? 100% of the time with fitness and my body, I do what I'm told to do from within ... Not by other people. Zero percent of the time I do what I'm told to do by other people, and 100% of the time I do it even if it comes at the cost of something else that I was supposed to be doing, but it's also on the times when I don't feel like doing something. Maybe I'm like ... Oh, the other day. I didn't feel like going to the gym. Too bad. I go to the gym if I know that it's what my soul's telling me to do. But by the same token, if I go to dinner, and there's like an amazing dessert and I wanna eat it, I'm gonna fricking eat it, right? If that's what feels good for me. So, then with business and money, I noticed that there was still times, or there's still times where I'm not doing what my soul tells me to do. You know, I like to rebel even if it's against my own self, from time to time. Just to kind of prove a point, that I can do what I want, I think. But I had to kind of acknowledge this. I'm like, "Oh, I have a feeling of discontent, or dis ease sometimes in my business because there's certain things that I know I actually should, quote unquote, should be doing from a soul point of view, like my soul's directing me to do it. Could be like whatever little task, or getting back to somebody on my team, or finalising an idea, or what it is, and it's that kind of little girl inside of me that's still like if your Mom tells you to clean your room, you're like, "Well, I was gonna clean my room, and now that you've told me to clean my room there's no fucking way I will clean my room." It's exactly the same reason that I refuse to see the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings movies, because everybody was like, "You've gotta see them. They're really good." I was like, "Bitch, please." If everybody's seeing them, there's no way I'm gonna see them because clearly I'm better than that. And then eventually I saw them and I was like, "I guess they were okay." So, it's just that ... I recognise that part of myself, and so I kind of kicked my own ass around it. And so then with love, and relationship, and sex and that sort of thing, I was like ... Oh, shit. I was like, "Well, okay." I went through this phase last year after I left my marriage, which was the year before, and so last year my phase was like, trying to do the things that I thought that I should to do be successful at dating or whatever, or try and learn about it, and doing things ... But also, I was in this most ridiculous pattern, which was so stupid, I can't even believe that I did this, where if I would go on a date with a guy, and I wasn't attracted to him, like romantic, to where you're like, "Can we just have sex right now?" That I would still kind of convince myself and I would be like, "Oh, well maybe I am attracted and I just don't know it, because he's a really nice guy." And now I say it, and I'm like, "That's hilarious." How could that be a thing? You either are or you aren't, and you fucking know where you are because you're like, can we just seriously, can I just crawl into your skin immediately? In a non weird way. And so, it was kind of this phase of trying to make it work, right? And now I'm like, "Okay, it's either I'm fucking feeling it, which is relatively rare, but that's the whole point, or it's nothing", right? And either way is totally fine, but I'm not gonna keep on meeting up with somebody just in case I somehow at some point magically wake up one day and in massive lust and attraction, or whatever, right? But by the same token, it also means ... That's fun. But by the same token it also means that if I'm feeling like, "Okay, I should say this to this guy", or message this or whatever ... I do this where, it even happened last week I think it was, last weekend, where I'm like, "Oh, don't message that." I met a guy, and I'm like, "Don't message that. That's a bad idea." And then I felt like messaging it. I'm like, "My soul is telling me to message that, so I'm gonna message it." And either outcome is fine, right? And it's just that continual process of I'm gonna continually back myself, I'm gonna continue to follow what I'm directed to do inside. Whatever the outcome is actually doesn't matter because the point is that I'm proving I fricking believe in myself, right? And I'm proving I'm gonna back myself, and I'm proving that I fucking mean what I say when it comes through me from the inside. So, I'm building inner strength, I'm building self belief, I'm building resilience, I'm building tenacity, and all these areas can just be related to each other, whether it's fitness stuff, business stuff, love and romance and sex stuff, all of them just connect into each other, and I have to fricking go. I could live stream all night, but I'm gonna go and have dinner with several badass people. So, I'm sure I'll have many more things to share with you tomorrow. I would really encourage you to watch the replay of this live stream. I feel like I brought the message and the preaching tonight, this afternoon, whatever it is. So, go watch the replay, leave me a comment, send me a message, let me know what you thought, and seriously, what if you just fully decided to back yourself? I've built a multi million dollar per year business where every day I just wake up, and sit around and talk to cool people on the internet like I'm doing now. I only do what I want, I have the best time ever. I travel the world continually. You guys see this, and I just want you to really know that's available for you. I didn't have all that. I built it up, and I built it from backing myself, right? And I literally used to write in my journal, all I really wanna do is inspire, educate and motivate people, and talk to cool badass people on the internet, and now here we are. So, I know that this is available for all of us in all areas. Don't forget that if you wanna spend a day with me in person in a VIP private event, on Tuesday in New York, that that's happening. There's several places left, I think three maybe for New York. Send me a message on my personal page, and then there's a couple of places left for San Diego the week after as well. So, it's gonna be April, sorry. March 27 in New York City, and April 3 over in San Diego. Message me on my Katrina Ruth personal page, or you can message on this profile if you're confused about how to find it, but maybe someone can tag in my personal page right now, or I'll do it in a moment when I jump off, and send me a message there because it's just easier for me to PM over on my personal one. I prefer it. And I'll get you all the details of exactly what we're covering, and the cost, and all that good stuff. Have an amazing day. Go take massive action, from your soul. And do not forget, life is now. Press fucking play.

A blog reader made a fairly strong and impassioned comment that sometimes asking the patient to examine ways she or he may be contributing to the problem may be a mistake when the patient really IS a victim, and cautioned against blaming the victim. David’s goal is never to blame patients, but rather to empower you. David and Fabrice begin by discussing the fact that sometimes people vacillate between other-blame (it’s all his/her fault) and self-blame (it’s all my fault), and emphasize that neither approach is helpful. If you blame the other person, the problem escalates and may turn to violence, but if, instead, you blame yourself, you’ll probably end up feeling worthless, guilty, unlovable, and depressed. So what’s the solution to this dilemma? Dr. Burns encourages patients to use the Five Secrets of Effective Communication and make a radical change in the way they communicate with others, along the lines of EAR. E stands for Empathy, A stands for Assertiveness, and R stands for Respect. You can examine each of the Five Secrets if you CLICK HERE. David gives five compelling examples of how to deal with people who REALLY ARE violent and abuse, including a raging psychiatric patient who was threatening the staff and on the verge of exploding, a serial killer who kidnapped a social worker who had attended one of David’s communication workshops, some drunken, abusive teenagers in a huge jeep who threatened David, an insulting, demoralizing, critical boss who put down everyone who worked with him. He includes with the story of a Lutheran minister,  Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who was imprisoned and mistreated by the Nazis during world war two. This is a controversial topic that David included in the podcasts somewhat reluctantly, so give a listen and tell us what you think! Right now the world seems to be spiraling into greater and greater hostilities. Does David have a point? Or is he way off base?

The Huffington Post ran an article last year on "11 Things We Fake in Our Social Media Lives" and I love it. As part of my business (and my inherently nosy personality) I love the peeking in on other people's lives aspect of social media. I love the stories they tell. I love connecting with people over similar interests. But what I don't love is the fakery and insincerity of some accounts on behalf of businesses. I just want to shake them and say, "Really? Are you sure about that?". I thought it was just me. Then I read Unmarketing by Scott Stratten and felt a huge sense of relief. I was not alone in my frustration on the fake factor. I've had Unmarketing on my shelf for a bit. I'm not sure why I held out but am so glad I got over whatever was holding me back. This book confirmed that the fake route, autotweeting, push marketing and all the other things that drive me crazy were in fact dumb. And bad for your business. And annoying. Thanks to reading this book I now have a deeper confidence in the slow but steady growth of my social media audience and the recommendation to my clients that they too embrace the WYSIWYG way. One of the many things I love about this book is how each section is a manageable length for marketing newbies and filled with enough insight and actionable items for those more long in the marketing tooth. The fact that it made me laugh out loud several times and managed to teach me so many great things? Well, that's a bonus worth passing on to others. If you're more of a video learner, then do yourself a favor and check out one of many of Scott's keynotes, the unmarketing podcast and other videos of amazeballs via: https://www.youtube.com/user/stratola/featured. Careful if you have a drink in your hand while you watch it. It's either coming out your nose or ending up in your lap at some point. Laughing or a forehead palm for the aha moments you'll have - keep it cold. You're welcome ;)

It's Monday morning here in Australia, and I'm getting into my week. Today, I want to talk about something that I think has the potential to transform your blogging and not only that it can transform many areas of your life. I want to tell you a little bit about my own personal journey for the last nine months. Before I do, I want to encourage you to check out today's show notes at problogger.com/podcast/38, where I’ll give you some further reading, and also, you have the opportunity to leave a comment and let us know what you think about today's show. If you do enjoy today's show, we'd love you to leave a review on iTunes. Also, there's been some fantastic reviews coming in over the last couple of days. Quite a long one came in from Get Fit Now with Cheryl, who wrote in part—I'll just read the first part—"I've watched my email and podcast list every day for the next episode of ProBlogger. If there's a new episode, no matter what else I'm currently listening to, I switch to ProBlogger." I really appreciate that Cheryl. I got this one from Sharon, which I really enjoyed as well. This is from Sharon Bogan. "Darren Rowse's strength is that he can take massive complex information and break it down into small actionable pieces of advice. None of it is rocket science, but it's all doable and useful.” I love that comment because I think it actually illustrates a point that I try and get across in my teaching all the time. None of what I teach is rocket science. Most of it is quite logical, but the reality is, most people don't apply the simple truth that is behind most successful blogs. Most successful bloggers that I've come across don't do amazingly cutting-edge things. They consistently produce useful content on a day-by-day basis. They interact with their readers. They get off their blogs and interact in other places on the web. Those three things build the foundations for a profitable blog. None of it is rocket science but it is all so important. That leads me to today's topic. Today, I want to pick up a theme that I talked about at the ProBlogger event just over a week ago. My opening keynote, my topic was Three Ways to Make Your Blog Shine. We had a party on Friday night and the theme was shine. Everyone was encouraged to come wearing something a little glittery or shimmery. I myself wore a Michael Jackson glove. That was my touch of shine, but I picked up the theme of shining in my opening keynote because really, that's what the point of the conference but also ProBlogger is about. We want to help bloggers to shine, their blogs to shine,

Recorded at the Reg's Place (San Antonio, TX) on April 5, 2012. This week, we brought in our good friend Jay Whitecotton in for a home recording in our continued efforts to "grip the format". And here we go: With The Hunger Games making a big splash, Jess takes time to pimp the US release of Japanese cult favorite Battle Royale in this weeks "Yeah, Imma Look Into Dat!". Then we reveal who'd kill first in a game of death...or any game for that matter. "Wah, why are they remaking *blank*? They're just going to ruin it and buttfuck my childhood!" Really? Are they that bad or have they been rehashing shit longer than you think? Word on the street is that Russia is developing a "zombie gun", a gun that turns people into zombies. Somehow, this leads into talks of the future of pornography (which is robots watching humans have sex) and how the Richest Man in the World gets off. Fascinating. In Larry's "Dad's Corner(ed)", we mow over the phenomenon of "bullying". Is this something that society needs to work together to dissipate or are we just creating a soft world full of soft people? Personal experiences are shared and Regan reveals he hates Star Trek literature. Club Comics vs. Alternative Comics. As Larry puts it so well, "[They're] the same, just doing different things." Eh. We think there's more to it than that. Let us know what you think, folks. Any improvements, suggestions? Comment, yo!
