On this episode I'm joined by Zadie Xa as we discuss her newly commissioned works presented for 16 edition of the Sharjah Biennial, elucidated through the curatorial theme, to carry. Asking questions such as what does it mean to carry a home, a history, a language, a legacy, and a lineage.Zadie Xa was born in Vancouver, Canada on unceded, ancestral and continually asserted territories of several tribes of First Nations Peoples and is now based in London, UK. Her practice focuses on familial legacies, interspecies communication and diasporic worlding. Throughout her practice, Xa uses water and marine ecologies as metaphors for exploring the unknown whilst also alluding to abstract notions of homeland. She explores these themes through immersive installations that appeal to the sensory experience of the viewer, often incorporating painting, sculpture, textile, sound and performance elements. Zadie earned an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art in 2014 and a BFA at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 2007.In the episode Xa, describes one of the key influences on her work being Korean shamanism, which she discovered accidentally through the 1977 film 'Ido Island.' Welcome to Episode 16 of Pattern Portraits!Lauren Godfrey chats with artist Zadie Xa, about alchemy and conjuring through pattern, oddness over evenness and Korean Folklore.Zadie Xa is an artist working across painting, sculpture and performance with recent presentations at Thaddeus Ropac in Paris, Hauser and Wirth in LA and The Whitechapel Gallery in London. Originally from Vancouver, Canada, Zadie explores notions of homeland and diaspora through the metaphor of water and interspecies communication. Zadie has an MA in painting from The Royal College of Art and a BFA from The Emily Carr Institute of Design in Vancouver.Her work often takes the form of textile constructions resembling garments or kimonos, heavily worked with quilting, appliqué and complex structural elements featuring recurring motifs such as the conch shell, the Yin Yang symbol, knives and kimchi. Welcome to the Dior Talks podcast series dedicated to the eighth edition of Dior Lady Art, hosted by Paris-based journalist Katya Foreman. For this highly-anticipated edition, 12 artists from around the world were invited to transform the iconic Lady Dior handbag into a unique work of art.In this episode, we enter the universe of London-based Canadian-Korean artist Zadie Xa, a transporting, enigmatic world informed by notions of self and Xa's experiences within the Korean diaspora. Influences range from folklore, speculative fiction and systems of power to the supernatural, ancient religions and the climate crisis. For her multi-media installations, the artist often incorporates richly patterned garments, mixing streetwear codes with nods to ceremonial wear and ancestral traditions.For Dior Lady Art, Xa dreamed up four bags featuring vibrant geometric patchworks inspired by pojagi, a traditional Korean wrapping cloth, as well as ornate mother-of-pearl applications that pay tribute to the ancient Korean handicraft of najeonchilgi. Welcome to season 4 of Art from the Outside! This episode we are thrilled to kick off the season with the artist Zadie Xa. Born in Vancouver in 1983 and now based in London, Zadie has developed an expansive practice that addresses the nature of diasporic identities, global histories, familial legacies and interspecies communication. Working across painting, sculpture, textile production, and performance, she draws upon her Korean heritage as she seeks to elevate narratives that have been erased or repressed by the West and occupying powers. Her work has been presented at venues around the world, such as the Whitechapel Gallery in London, Remai Modern, Saskatoon, Canada and Tramway, Glasgow, Scotland. In 2019, Zadie was invited to contribute to the performance program at the 58th Venice Biennale, which was also curated by Ralph Rugoff and Aaron Cezar - another Art from the Outside guest. In July Zadie opened the exhibition Nine Tailed Tall Tales: Trickster, Mongrel, Beast at Space K Seoul, South Korea. In the wake of the coronavirus epidemic and shutting down of much of the UK's cultural life, we have decided to bring you a series of interviews with contemporary artists, writers, filmmakers and other cultural figures, conducted via Skype (so apologies for the diminished audio quality), about their practices, the political issues that inspire them and the socio-economic conditions that have shaped their work. In the sixteenth of these Sessions, Juliet talks to Korean-Canadian artist Zadie Xa. Born in 1983 and based in London since studying at the Royal College of Art, Xa works in painting, textiles, film and performance, examining her own identity and her lived experience within the Korean diaspora, using water and marine ecologies as metaphors for exploring the unknown. Juliet spoke to Xa about her recent work responding to the Black Lives Matter protests; how she has experienced the Covid-19 lockdown (including a spike in racist attitudes towards east Asians; her performances at the Venice Biennale and Art Night in 2019; and how her work engages with matrilineal heritage, Korean culture and Oriental imagery in western pop culture. Year: 2018 Location: Covent Garden Tube Station, London Directions: Start at the entrance of Covent Garden Tube Station and continue your travels by Underground for the duration of the piece Duration: 31 min A Sojourn Through Saturn and Across the Southern Sea by Zadie Xa combines spoken-word narration with traditional Korean percussions and abstract compositions to create an otherworldly soundscape to be experienced on London’s Underground. Starting at the top of Covent Garden Tube Station stairwell, the piece accompanies our descent and travel into the subterranean environment. As we enter the underground tunnels, a journey through time and memory begins. The work is inspired by one of the trips Xa takes most frequently in London – that to her studio in Bromley by Bow on the Central Line. The hot temperature and harsh noises of the tube evoke an imagery of banshees and ghosts in the artist’s imagination, echoed in the work by ghostly wails and hisses. A Sojourn Through Saturn and Across the Southern Sea also includes excerpts from shaman songs and percussionist rhythms, acting as a supernatural force giving motion to the journey.
