Similar to the astrological chart, in that energy types are defined according to birth date, time and place (only three months before your actual birth occurs). “Human Design offers a map of your unique genetic design, with detailed information on both conscious and unconscious aspects of yourself.”In this episode, we discussed Ena's forthcoming workshops - one on Human Design and the other about Full Body Orgasms (where you are fully clothed!).These will be taking place on the Union Canal, London, from 23rd February - 1st March and are entirely FREE, funded by the London Borough of Kensington & Chelsea.Chapters00:00 Introduction to Human Design and Workshops03:04 Exploring Human Design Energy Types06:11 Understanding Relationships through Human Design09:01 The Role of Energy in Relationships11:55 Full Body Orgasm Workshop Overview14:50 Navigating Sexual Energy and Confidence17:53 The Importance of Communication in Relationships21:02 Normalising Conversations about Sexuality23:46 Conclusion and Workshop DetailsThousands of people are finally talking about intimacy, desire and pleasure without shame. This episode addresses the question: should embedding creative enterprise models be a fundamental approach to sustaining the future of Socially Engaged Art? Hannah Kemp-Welch & Sophie Hope talk with Kathrin Böhm from Company Drinks, a community space and cultural enterprise based in Barking and Dagenham; and Dan Edelstyn and Hilary Powell from Bank Job and Power Station, based in the London Borough of Walthamstow. All three of them participated in Social Making iteration 5. Company Drinks works as a long term project in which each step of the production, distribution, and planning operates as a public space. They have produced drinks from handpicked ingredients for ten years now, and use social enterprise models as part of their arts practice. Power Station grew out of a previous project called Bank Job that took over a high street bank and attempted to create an equitable local economy. Power Station works towards making a street in Waltham Forest into a collective power station, with long term plans to create a borough wide, communally owned solar power company. Note: Social Making iteration 5 took place on October 10 and 11, with support from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

It's a powerful episode this week as we talk about housing and in particular what can be done to accelerate construction of the vital homes that are needed to support our society across the UK.Now the need for housing – in particular affordable housing - has become one of THE most pressing social issues of our time. The current New Homes in New Ways project being hosted at the Building Centre in London makes that point abundantly clear – too many people are still living in temporary or substandard accommodation and it's something that, for a developed nation like the UK, is simply unacceptable.Yet despite widespread acknowledgment of the problem, progress towards change has been slow, and systemic barriers continue to stall meaningful solutions. The Government's new target of building 1.5 million new homes in the next five years is ambitious and welcome, but it still raises fundamental questions about feasibility, funding, and strategic planning. So what to do? My guest today is Jez Sweetland, founder of the Housing Festival think-tank and a passionate advocate for changing the way we deliver housing in the UK. As he pointed out very powerfully in his opening address to the launch of the New Homes in New Ways, the fact that one in nine children is homeless in the London Borough of Newham is something that should cause us an industry and as a society to bow our heads with shame.Because building affordable homes is doable – YES it requires financial resources and land and YES, it needs innovative thinking, new materials, new techniques and effective collaboration across the huge number of stakeholders that make housing possible. But all of this is available and possible – so why is it so difficult - let's hear more. Productivity Pitches #4: Local Government

Productivity in public services has never been more important. Most services are struggling to return to pre-pandemic performance levels, and the new Labour government have indicated that spending will remain tight. Improvements in performance will likely come from frontline workers finding new, innovative ways of delivering services. So what can be done to improve productivity? By highlighting outstanding examples of innovation across public services, Productivity Pitches, a series of events hosted by the IfG, aims to share and support ways to improve performance levels. This event was the fourth in the series and focused on local government. Each speaker had 10 minutes to present their innovation, followed by 10 minutes of audience questions. The chair and a guest from the Productivity Institute – who are kindly supporting this event series – then brought together the common themes from the pitches and discussed the lessons for improving productivity. The speakers for this edition of Productivity Pitches were: Gill Wilson and Tim Pearse, London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, on joining up previously disparate datasets across the local authority to better understand the needs of their residents and forecast demand for their services. This allows them to support residents at an earlier stage and making the best use of scarce council resources. Vicky Schofield and Cheryl Whitehouse, Wakefield Council children's services, on the council providing residential care and improving outcomes for care leavers. With the cost of commissioning children's residential care with private providers increasing rapidly, Wakefield decided to operate and run its own children's homes, with more stable staffing and fewer restrictions than traditional children's homes. As a result, the cost of providing care has dropped dramatically and children have far better outcomes. Cllr Bridget Smith, South Cambridgeshire Council, on the outcomes of shifting to a four-day working week. The Covid-19 pandemic led to the council changing the way that it worked, making better use of technology, flexible and home working. As a result, council employees now complete 100% of their work in 80% of the time. An independent evaluation of the reforms found that the council was performing better on 22 of 24 metrics, including a large drop in turnover and reduced use of expensive agency staff. The event was chaired by Nick Davies, Programme Director at the Institute for Government. Andy Westwood, Professor of Public Policy, Government and Business at The University of Manchester joined the discussion of common themes. Together with Finn Partners, WTTC is launching in October a community for the global SME market called Together in Travel. As the voice of the global travel private sector WTTC wants to make sure the voice of the SME is heard loud and clear. Together in Travel Pre-registration form: https://form.typeform.com/to/eVF3u89X KEY TAKEAWAYS Resilience is crucial in both government and corporate sectors, as leaders often face numerous challenges and setbacks. Embracing failures and learning from them can lead to stronger leadership. Understanding the dynamics between government and the private sector is essential for effective advocacy in travel and tourism. Leaders must navigate the differing timeframes and priorities of both sectors to create meaningful partnerships. The travel and tourism industry must leverage data and AI to enhance operations and customer experiences. Leaders should take ownership of AI initiatives to drive innovation and efficiency within their organisations. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are vital to the travel and tourism sector, representing 80% of the industry. Initiatives like "Together in Travel" aim to amplify their voices and provide resources for growth and resilience. As the travel and tourism sector grows, it is essential to prioritise sustainability and responsible growth. Leaders should advocate for practices that protect the environment and support local communities, ensuring a positive impact on society. The 50 Shades of Planning Podcast

"‘The moment has come': pro-building Labour YIMBYs are set to raise the roof" was the title of a piece in the Observer ahead of the Labour Party Conference (link below). For many of the most ambitious of the new cohort of Labour MPs, this is the fashionable campaign of the moment, not for economic growth but as a social justice movement – and one that many of the new millennials entering parliament hope to stake their careers on. Inside Labour it is not a left-right divide, but some of its champions are prepared for it to mean internal party conflict between those who are radicalised on the housing crisis, and more nervous colleagues in rural or suburban seats won for the first time by Labour who might be tempted to retreat into nimbyism on local issues as a way of trying to keep their seats. The point about first time Labour MPs retreating into NIMBYism is interesting in the context of the proposed changes to the standard method that is currently being consulted upon, but it was the point about YIMBYism not being a left-right divide inside Labour that Sam Stafford found most interesting because of a piece in the New Statesman back in April called ‘Not all YIMBYs are your friends - the pro-housing coalition is less united than it seems' (link also below). As it so happens, Sam approached the people quoted in the New Statesmen piece about recording a chat about the politics of housing and met four of them recently to do just that. The four are John Myers, co-founder of the YIMBY Alliance; Robert Colville, columnist and Director of the Centre for Policy Studies; Jonn Elledge, journalist, author and fan of local government reorganisation; and Aydin Dikerdem, Cabinet Member for housing on the London Borough of Wandsworth. They were going to talk about whether Kier Starmer's self-declaration as a YIMBY marks the movements arrival into the political mainstream; whether the ends, more housing, is more important than the means; and who should get a say over what goes where and why. Some of that they did, but the remainder of the conversation, as Listeners will hear, goes off in all kinds of directions. Some accompanying reading. ‘The moment has come': pro-building Labour YIMBYs are set to raise the roof https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2024/sep/15/the-moment-has-come-pro-building-labour-yimbys-are-set-to-raise-the-roof Not all YIMBYs are your friends https://www.newstatesman.com/comment/2024/04/no-not-every-yimby-your-mate-housing All hail the ‘MIMBYs': the open-minded voters who might just save Labour's housing plans https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/apr/05/labour-housing-plans-keir-starmer-houses By Sam: YIMBYs and NIMBYs. In this episode, my guest, Hayley Cameron and I talked about how a tragedy could lead you to purpose in life. Meet my guest: Hayley Cameron is an Education Safeguarding Manager at Cognus Limited, London Borough of Sutton Her story: "How I came to work in safeguarding - my why - 10 years old lost an aunt to domestic abuse - she was 26.  She had 2 children and we brought them up as our own - they struggled at school - little understanding of the impact of trauma and undiagnosed need - I went into teaching because I wanted to fix that. Involved in a serious case review in 2013 where a pupil that I worked with was murdered by her parent - impacted on everything and led to what I do today and highlights the need for supervision - safe space to share how you are feeling.  Following this we also developed https://www.childsafeguardingtoolkit.org.uk/ which is a resource free to anyone working in safeguarding." Much has changed in England's capital during the last decade. Breweries have come and gone as have countless beer styles, too. But in 2024, Hammerton Brewery - based moments from Caledonian Road & Barnsbury railway station in the London Borough of Islington - proudly celebrates its 10th anniversary. The business, founded by Lee Hammerton and his girlfriend - now wife - Karina has produced a wealth of beers during those 10 years, picking up a raft of awards along the way. And brewing is something that runs in the blood for the Hammerton's, with Lee being a distant relative of the family that founded the original Hammerton Brewery, a substantial site situated at the bottom of Lingham Street in Stockwell, and one acquired by Charles Hammerton in the late 19th century. While the modern Hammerton produces a number of decorated dark beers, that original brewery was also known for being the first in the UK, and probably Europe, to use oysters as part of the process of brewing stout in 1938. In this podcast episode, which is also available to watch on our YouTube channel we chart the last decade through some of the brewery's most important beers. From N7 IPA and Panama Extra Pale Ale to the alcohol-free Zed and from nitro stout Tint to City of Cake, which just picked up Gold in the Cask competition at the recent SIBA Independent Beer Awards 2024, we discuss how these beers have shaped the first 10 years of one of London's finest breweries.

We kick off our new Club Development Consultancy podcast with a fascinating interview with Andy MacRae, General Secretary of Bealonians FC who are currently petitioning Redbridge Council to keep their club at Oakfields Playing Fields. Bealonians FC have been in the London Borough of Redbridge since 1936 and are the largest grassroots football club in the borough. At the request of Redbridge council, Bealonians FC have been caretakers of Oakfields Playing Fields since 2020. Looking after it in the absence of a lease, they have invested in its maintenance and provided a vital lifeline to the community. The club have since learned that the council is planning on granting the lease to Premier League club West Ham United, which would leave Bealonians FC and its 29 youth teams (including two girls teams) and ten adult men's teams, without a place big enough in the borough to relocate to. The club claims that if they were to lose the site, it would have a dramatic impact on the health and wellbeing of the community - counter intuitive to a number of priorities stated in Redbridge Council strategy. It would also mean the potential privatisation of what is currently a public green space enjoyed by thousands in the community.

Each speaker had eight minutes, followed by eight minutes of questions from the audience. This months speakers were: Sandrine Balley, Geographic Information Lead at the London Borough of Hackney, on how Hackney developed a webmap template to open up spatial data (and how you can use it too) Kathleen Caper, Head of Data Maturity and Governance at the Central Digital and Data Office, on Data Maturity Assessment for Government - more than a tool for the data function Dan Jeffery, Chief Information Security Officer and Deputy Chief Information Officer at NHS Blood and Transplant, on how NHSBT secure the supply of Blood, Organs, and Tissues services to the NHS from cyber threats Clara Clark Nevola, Group Manager (Technology) at the Information Commissioner's Office, on Privacy Enhancing Technologies, how they relate to data protection requirements and how they can be used in practice The event was chaired by Gavin Freeguard, Associate at the Institute for Government.

She saw a young man sitting up against the cemetery wall amidst the ruins of the old abbey. As Ms. Denham approached, the young man never reacted or indicated that he heard her or the collie. Hesitantly, she walked over and found that twenty-one-year-old Daniel Whitworth was dead. Ms. Denham immediately phoned the police saying, “I was the same woman that found the other body a few weeks ago. I found another young boy.”Join Jen and Cam as they talk about how the murderous and lascivious behavior of Stephen Port would go unchecked by authorities. Based on five years of archival research, Britain's Informal Empire in Spain, 1830-1950: Free Trade, Protectionism and Military Power offers a radical reinterpretation of Britain and Spain's relationship during the growth, apogee and decline of the British Empire. It shows that from the early nineteenth century Britain turned Spain into an ‘informal' colony, using its economic and military dominance to achieve its strategic and economic ends. Britain's free trade campaign, which aimed to tear down the legal barriers to its explosive trade and investment expansion, undermined Spain's attempts to achieve industrial take-off, demonstrating that the relationship between the two countries was imperial in nature, and not simply one of unequal national power. Exploring five key moments of crisis in their relations, from the First Carlist War in the 1830s to the Second World War, the author analyses Britain's use of military force in achieving its goals, and the consequences that this had for economic and political policy-making in Spain. Ultimately, the Anglo-Spanish relationship was an early example of the interaction between industrial power and colonies, formal and informal, that characterised the post-World War Two period. An insightful read for anyone researching the British Empire and its colonies, this book offers an innovative perspective by closely examining the volatile relationship between two European powers. Dr Nick Sharman is a Research Fellow at the University of Nottingham, Department of Modern Languages and Cultures. His subject is the economic and political relationship between Britain and Spain in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. He has had a career in business and local and regional government and is currently a Councillor in the London Borough of Hackney, where he chairs the Audit Committee. Nick has a PhD from the University of Nottingham, an honours degree in economics and politics from Trinity College, Dublin, an MPhil in town planning from University College London, an MBA from Henley Management College and an MA in history from Royal Holloway University of London. He has written widely on strategic and regeneration issues in local and regional Government and, more recently, on the history of the Anglo-Spanish relationship. His book, Britain's Informal Empire in Spain, 1830-1950: Free Trade, Protectionism and Military Power, was published by Palgrave Macmillan in late 2021. “I think humans really need to feel valued and loved. The question is where do you get your value from? And I try to get my value from–faith plays a big part of my life, but not everyone has that way of thinking about the world, so I'm not going to major on that, but that's only part of it, the sense that I believe there's a God who thinks I'm of worth, but it's more than that. I believe that my closest friends and my family think I'm of worth. That's it. That will do. And if 100 or 1,000 people think I'm an idiot, that's a bit annoying, but it's not totally the end of the world. And they're not going to think about it after a week because they're going to have other things to think about. And so I think that's probably made me more comfortable in saying that if I do stand up and it's a disaster, it doesn't matter that much. If I start a charity and it fails, and I have started things that fell apart, it's not the end of the world.”Jon Yates is Executive Director of the Youth Endowment Fund, a £200 million charitable fund focused on integrating young people into society.
