Since Labour returned to power in the 2024 UK General Election, announcing their landslide victory with a speech at the Tate Modern, little has been made of their cultural policy. In this free episode, Juliet talks to Dr David Hesmondhalgh – Professor of Media, Music and Culture at the University of Leeds, and the author of Culture, Economy and Politics: The Case of New Labour (2015) and five editions of The Cultural Industries – about Labour's approach to art and culture, looking at their policies and the ideology behind them. Looking primarily at England as cultural policy is devolved in the rest of the UK, Juliet and David discussed the move away from Jeremy Corbyn's arts policies; Labour's Plan for the Arts, Culture and Creative Industries and the 2024 manifesto; the centrality of local government and education to cultural policy; Margaret Hodge's review of Arts Council England; the timidity of Labour's approach and the limits of their idea of ‘creative industries'; how this has differed (or not) from the Conservative and New Labour governments before them; and the need to shift the emphasis from financial returns to the intrinsic social and cultural importance of the arts. What exactly is a biennale, and why do they matter in the art world? An empirical research of creative intermediaries in Accra's contemporary art sector from 2025, by Jack D. This article advocates for a regenerative cultural policy that treats arts as a holistic tool for achieving sustainability rather than just a source of financial growth.Find the article through this link.Abstract: The Creative Economy (CE) has emerged as a significant cultural policy agenda, offering promising pathways to promote Sustainable Development (SD) in African countries. However, growth-focused CE paradigms often fail to reflect the empirical realities faced by cultural stakeholders in Africa, which may hinder the effective use of culture in advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Addressing this requires holistic, regenerative approaches to CEs that prioritise the system-enhancing qualities of culture and focus on how cultural workers collaborate and navigate dysfunctional cultural policy infrastructures. This article, therefore, examines the role of creative intermediaries in rethinking the conditions that may enable meaningful contributions toward the SDGs through CEs. Based on 14 days of fieldwork conducted in the visual arts community of Accra, Ghana, in July 2022, the empirical research identifies creative intermediaries as pivotal actors in Ghana's CE, contributing in ways that align with the interconnected dimensions of the SDGs. This article proposes that cultural enabling is an intrinsic working practice of these creative intermediaries and a fundamental function of CEs. The Great Art Fraud: Performance, Pretty Privilege & an $86 Million ScandalThis week's episode of All About Art dives into one of the biggest recent scandals in contemporary art. It's based on my recent experience watching the BBC's The Great Art Fraud, which chronicles Inigo Philbrick's spectacular $86 million fraud that shook the art world to its core.I discuss a range of factors that led to this happening, from the halo effect and “pretty privilege” to the culture of opacity that still defines high-value art deals. I explore how Philbrick sold a lifestyle as much as he sold art - and how the BBC's documentary, perhaps unintentionally, keeps that performance of glamor alive.We discuss the gaps in regulation, the role of symbolic capital in luxury markets, and why the documentary's hero's journey framing (I explain why I think its framed like this) feels kind of uncomfortably forgiving. The Mind Control of Mount Making with Alex Abbott, Director of DauphinIn this episode, I sat down with Alex Abbott, Art Consultant and Director of Dauphin, a company that specializes in displays and mounts.I speak to Alex about what his company does - which a lot of you have certainly come into contact with but not been fully aware of. Alex does the unseen work of ensuring the objects we view and love in museums, galleries, and homes are mounted with safety and care. That ancient jug you saw last week at the Museum of Natural History? That was mounted and tilted at a 40 degree angle by Alex and his team, but his main objectives are not to impress the viewer with his skills of mounting a work of art or history - his objective is that his work remains as invisible as possible while keeping whatever it is he is working with, safe. I speak to Alex about the artworks he has worked with in the past, including Barbara Heptworth sculptures and suits of armor. I ask him what sort of things need to be considered when consulting on how works of art or objects should be displayed, and also what its like to be director of a company at quite a young age - he took the helm of Dauphin at just 25 years old. In this episode of Glowing Older, host Nancy Griffin interviews Paul Nagle, Executive Director of Stonewall Community Development Corporation. They discuss the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ seniors, including discrimination in housing and the need for innovative community-driven solutions. Paul shares his personal journey as a survivor of AIDS and his activism in creating supportive housing and care systems for LGBTQ older adults. The conversation highlights the importance of resilience, community, and advocacy in addressing the needs of this marginalized population as traditional long-term care systems face collapse.About Paul Paul has over 30 years in both nonprofit administration and LGBTQ+ activism and currently serves as the Founding Executive Director of Stonewall Community Development Corporation (Stonewall CDC) since 2015.  Before joining Stonewall CDC, Paul was the Executive Director of Cultural Strategies Initiative Inc. (CSI), a program of Demos, established with a major grant from the Rockefeller Cultural Innovation Fund.  The mission of this project was to strengthen art's central role in civic life, to enhance cultural, community, and environmental sustainability.   Before that, as Director of Communications & Cultural Policy for NYC Councilmember Alan Gerson (2002-2010), Paul organized the hard-hit cultural community in District 1 and engaged them in crafting strategies to help preserve and revitalize the arts in Lower Manhattan in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. His community-generated plan, Campuses & Corridors, served as the blueprint for a partnership between the Mayor, the Council Speaker and the Councilmember that was very successful in providing targeted capital and programmatic investments to restore the sector and convince the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation to grant $70 million to small to mid-sized arts organizations.   Paul earned both of his degrees from the Gallatin School at New York University, graduating summa cum laudefrom the bachelor's program.  He earned his masters' degree at age 49 in 2007. An abridged version of his master's thesis, Room for Creativity – the Role of Artists' Live/work Space in the New Economy, was published in The International Journal of the Arts in Society.Key Takeaways Stonewall Community Development Corporation focuses on housing and care for LGBTQ older adults. Episode 69 of ‘All About Art': The White Pube: Discussing ‘Poor Artists' & Why The Art World Needs To Change - with Gabrielle de la Puente and Zarina Muhammad  In this episode, I sat down with Gabrielle de la Puente and Zarina Muhammad, the co-founders of The White Pube, a platform launched in 2015 where they share reviews, essays, social media posts and memes critiquing the elitism and inaccessibility of the art world. The name the duo chose, The White Pube, is a play on the White Cube, a globally successful mega contemporary art gallery. It is also a tongue-in-cheek reference to the display format in which contemporary works of art are generally shown. Pristine white walls, wood or concrete floors, high ceilings… space of veneration or quiet contemplation, sterile where nothing other than “the art experience” can happen. The provocative name has even deeper layers when considering the references to white supremacy and ageism within the arts, as well - so listen on to hear me speak to Gabrielle and Zarina more about that later in the episode.  We chat about how they got started as an art critic duo, and how they have been working together and successfully collaborating for nearly a decade - having never had ONE fight (well, in this interview you will hear Zarina say that they did have a fight once… but it was about art). I also got the pleasure of speaking to Gabrielle and Zarina about their recently published debut book called ‘Poor Artists', in which an aspiring artist has to navigate money and power, and is faced with the decision of whether she cares more about success or staying true to herself.
