On this episode I'm joined by Zadie Xa as we discuss her newly commissioned works presented for 16 edition of the Sharjah Biennial, elucidated through the curatorial theme, to carry. Asking questions such as what does it mean to carry a home, a history, a language, a legacy, and a lineage.Zadie Xa was born in Vancouver, Canada on unceded, ancestral and continually asserted territories of several tribes of First Nations Peoples and is now based in London, UK. Her practice focuses on familial legacies, interspecies communication and diasporic worlding. Throughout her practice, Xa uses water and marine ecologies as metaphors for exploring the unknown whilst also alluding to abstract notions of homeland. She explores these themes through immersive installations that appeal to the sensory experience of the viewer, often incorporating painting, sculpture, textile, sound and performance elements. Zadie earned an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art in 2014 and a BFA at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 2007.In the episode Xa, describes one of the key influences on her work being Korean shamanism, which she discovered accidentally through the 1977 film 'Ido Island.' She explains how this discovery has profoundly impacted her artistic exploration of marginalized perspectives and the supernatural, and the importance of collaboration in her practice, notably with her longtime collaborator and life partner Benito Mayor Vallejo. -------------------------------------------------------------------- WHERE YOU CAN FOLLOW ME AND SUBSCRIBE Website - Sign up for my newsletter https://lightworkco.com/ Instagram - Follow me on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/sadeolo/https://www.instagram.com/lightworkcompany/ YouTube - Subscribe to my YouTube Channel www.youtube.com/@lightworkco

In this week's episode I am joined by a few different people. First we hear from Jimmy Weaver and Anthony Landreth, two of the men responsible for putting on this event. Jimmy has done numerous coon hunting events to get youth involved over the years and this year decided he wanted to expand things. He enlisted Anthony and a host of others to do just that. Then we hear from 3 of the youth hunters that won coon hound puppies, Branch, Zadie, and Drake. This was such an awesome event and if you are in the vicinity of West TN I would highly recommend taking any youth in your life to this event! Welcome to Episode 16 of Pattern Portraits!Lauren Godfrey chats with artist Zadie Xa, about alchemy and conjuring through pattern, oddness over evenness and Korean Folklore.Zadie Xa is an artist working across painting, sculpture and performance with recent presentations at Thaddeus Ropac in Paris, Hauser and Wirth in LA and The Whitechapel Gallery in London. Originally from Vancouver, Canada, Zadie explores notions of homeland and diaspora through the metaphor of water and interspecies communication. Zadie has an MA in painting from The Royal College of Art and a BFA from The Emily Carr Institute of Design in Vancouver. Her work often takes the form of textile constructions resembling garments or kimonos, heavily worked with quilting, appliqué and complex structural elements featuring recurring motifs such as the conch shell, the Yin Yang symbol, knives and kimchi. Performances have featured huge Orca whales and costumes sewn from bleach dyed denim in aqueous patterns of undulating water.I am totally entranced by Zadie's work and the way that pattern weaves its way into every element whether it's a vast patchwork shelter, housing delicately rendered paintings or a gown hanging from the ceiling, poised with a pair of platform shoes resembling cabbages.Zadie has chosen a vibrant patchwork of patterns including a Korean Bojagi wrapping (date unknown), Sonia Delaunay's ‘Simultaneous Dress' from 1913, a pattern of her own - Kimchi Rites and Kitchen Rituals, 2022, a Christopher Kane flower stamped dress from Spring/Summer 2012 and a Mori Yuzan wave drawing circa 1903.You can see all of Zadie's patterns and more on instagram @patternportraitspodcast‘Magic Motif' - The PATTERN PORTRAIT print artwork to accompany Zadie's interview and featuring the patterns we discuss is available to buy now at www.laurengodfrey.co.ukImage of Zadie Xa by Benedict JohnsonReferences:Gee's Bend Quilt MakersLegacy Russell The New Bend Exhibition at Hauser and Wirth Hosted on Acast. Zadie Smith grew up in north west London and studied English at Cambridge University. After a publisher's bidding war when she was just 21, her debut novel White Teeth became a huge critical and commercial hit on publication in 2000 and won several awards including the Orange Prize, now known as the Women's Prize for Fiction, and the Whitbread first novel award. Since then, with books including On Beauty, NW and Swing Time, Zadie Smith has established herself as one of the world's most successful and popular living novelists, renowned for her witty dialogue and explorations of cultural identity, class and sexuality. Her most recent book The Fraud is her first historical novel. Zadie Smith talks to John Wilson about her upbringing in Willesden, North West London, with her Jamaican born mother and white English father. She chooses C S Lewis' The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe as an early formative influence and remembers how its themes of danger, power and betrayal were intoxicating to her as a young reader. Zadie talks about the creative influence of her husband, the poet Nick Laird, and of the cultural impact of a trip she made to west Africa in 2007 which inspired much of her 2016 novel Swing Time. She also reflects on her role as an essayist who in recent years, has increasingly written about global political and social issues.Producer: Edwina Pitman

On this episode, we were joined by one of the most acclaimed writers of her generation, Zadie Smith, who's latest novel, The Fraud, tells the story of the most notorious English trial of the 19th century, and rightfully places slavery at the invisible centre of the traditional Victorian novel. In our conversation, Zadie explains how she brought this vivid world of real-life characters to being; among them a famous British novelist and a freed slave from a sugar plantation in Jamaica; and why the lives of these Victorians connect so deeply to the concerns of the present day.Far from a typical interview, we also spoke about a range of interesting topics, including, but not limited to: Donald Trump; OJ Simpson; David Foster Wallace and the 90s literati; the attention economy and its effects on modern reading; and why she believes you can love things like English country houses and classic Hollywood movies and still acknowledge the dark histories that gave them their power.
Welcome to season 4 of Art from the Outside! This episode we are thrilled to kick off the season with the artist Zadie Xa. Born in Vancouver in 1983 and now based in London, Zadie has developed an expansive practice that addresses the nature of diasporic identities, global histories, familial legacies and interspecies communication. Working across painting, sculpture, textile production, and performance, she draws upon her Korean heritage as she seeks to elevate narratives that have been erased or repressed by the West and occupying powers. Her work has been presented at venues around the world, such as the Whitechapel Gallery in London, Remai Modern, Saskatoon, Canada and Tramway, Glasgow, Scotland. In 2019, Zadie was invited to contribute to the performance program at the 58th Venice Biennale, which was also curated by Ralph Rugoff and Aaron Cezar - another Art from the Outside guest. In July Zadie opened the exhibition Nine Tailed Tall Tales: Trickster, Mongrel, Beast at Space K Seoul, South Korea. Novelist Zadie Smith is one of the most acclaimed and beloved writers of her generation. Editor David Remnick has called her “a blessing not merely to The New Yorker but to language itself.” Author George Saunders has praised Smith's work for its “heart and moral ambition.” I, too, think she's quite good. And so today we're joined by Smith to discuss her prescient historical novel The Fraud (8:20), her instinctive writing process (14:06), and the role of projection in her work (20:30). Then, Zadie reflects on her upbringing in North West London (24:12), the art that influenced her growing up (27:15), and the media circus that followed the publication of her debut novel, White Teeth (33:45). On the back-half, we discuss her desire to frequently reinvent herself as an artist as a writer (41:55), why she prioritized pleasure after her book On Beauty (45:17), the nuanced politics of her work (49:04), her evolving relationship to humanism (48:15), a striking passage from Intimations (54:00), and what she sees in this next generation of novelists (1:04:45). On July 4, 2016, 911 is called to respond to a 4 year old girl in Athens, Alabama, who's not breathing. At the hospital, the youngster is placed on life support while her family hope and pray she regains consciousness. But three days later, with no hope of recovery, the little girl's distraught parents make the heartbreaking decision to turn off her life support. A cause of death can't be determined and there's no obvious sign of injury. But those close to the family, as well as police, are starting to become suspicious. Nine months later, with the case still open, there's a shocking development. When the killer makes themselves known and the circumstances behind the tragedy become clear, there's answers, but the pain is not lessened. In episode 252, Jac and Alexis detail the devastating murder of Zadie Cooper, at the hands of one person who loved her more than anything in the world.

In part two of our conversation with Zadie, Jonathan does his very best to encourage her to persevere with her second play and she explains how a thought that seems relatively tame to her in prose form has the potential to be thrillingly animated on stage. We learn which Shakespearean revivals infuriate her, how she and her husband Nick Laird can tell from the opening line of a play whether they'll be leaving at the interval or not and get a sneak preview of her new literary creation, Mrs Touché. All this and a guinea pig-related theatrical scoop. Stage Door Jonny breaks the big stories… Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Molly talks with thriller author Mazey Eddings about her book, "A Brush With Love". Order "A Brush With Love" from an independent bookseller at this link: https://bookshop.org/a/10588/9781250805980 or at Amazon right here https://amzn.to/3sYpVvX ABOUT "A BRUSH WITH LOVE" Harper is anxiously awaiting placement into a top oral surgery residency program when she crashes (literally) into Dan. Harper would rather endure a Novocaine-free root canal than face any distractions, even one this adorable. A first-year dental student with a family legacy to contend with, Dan doesn't have the same passion for pulling teeth that Harper does. Though he finds himself falling for her, he is willing to play by Harper's rules. So with the greatest of intentions and the poorest of follow-throughs, the two set out to be “just friends.” But as they get to know each other better, Harper fears that trading fillings for feelings may make her lose control and can't risk her carefully ordered life coming undone, no matter how drool-worthy Dan is. Blood, gore, and extra-long roots? No problem. The idea of falling in love? Torture.
