We ponder the reasons behind this decline, such as changing tastes, health consciousness, and supply chain issues during the pandemic. The craft beer industry is facing several challenges, including increased competition from other beverages like hard seltzers and non-alcoholic beers. However, despite these challenges, the craft beer community remains strong and continues to produce innovative and delicious beers for fans to enjoy.More news in this episode- Mikkeller's Final US Location Closes- Heineken Cuts Draft Sales Due to Supply Chain IssuesCelebrating Craft Beer FriendshipsAs we wrap up this chapter of Beer Guys Radio, we want to take a moment to celebrate the friendships and connections that we have made in the craft beer world. Craft Collaborations inspire Nappy Roots to open Atlantucky Brewing If you're a regular listener of the show then you've heard us talking with the Nappy Roots crew a few times before.  We met the guys back in 2017 as they brewed a collaboration with Monday Night Brewing, Front Porch Pale Ale, to go along with the album of the same name.  We were a young show at the time and thrilled to land an interview with the Grammy-nominated quartet.  Fish Scales, admittedly the most passionate craft drinker of the group, had a thirst for more beer knowledge.  We started chatted regularly about beer, attending festivals, and brewing in Scales' garage.  We may not be the typical friends for a couple of rappers, but never underestimate the power of beer. Originally, the plan was to brew collaboration beers to help promote the group.  Find a brewery near one of their upcoming shows and brew a beer with them.  Through these collaborations they discovered they really loved to brew beer and found many similarities with the music industry in pursuing your creative side.  The idea shifted from promotion to a business plan for Atlantucky Brewing.  Just like any brewer, the guys learned a lot through process and Skinny shares some tips and pitfalls for those that are looking to start a brewery.  Daily operations are handled by Skinny and Scales as they're in Atlanta, but B. Stille and Ron Clutch are behind the project as well, just from their old Kentucky home.  You'll see them at the brewery for special events and occasional concerts. Nappy Roots hasn't left the rap game to pursue brewing.  They balance a full schedule with studio time early in the week and they're back in the brewhouse later in the week.  They have had to cut back on their shows some, performing about two a month compared to 6ish prior to opening the brewery.  If you're only familiar with their old stuff, make sure to check out some of their newer music as well. The Atlantucky Brewing Taproom For the most part, taprooms are generally the same.  Atlantucky brings a special twist to their space adding an art gallery, event space and, of course, concert venue.  They're located just a stone's throw from Mercedes Benz stadium so if you're in town for a game or concert you've got a great spot to pre-game.  The location also attracts other artists to work at the brewery.  As Skinny says, the space allows them to be around other creatives and continue their passions while having a job.  Atlantucky Brewing 170 Northside Dr SW Suite 96 Atlanta, GA 30313 https://atlantucky.com/ The Beer List Atlantucky / Pontoon Maple Barrel-Aged Blondie Brownie  Atlantucky / Monday Night The Humdinger 2018 Wren House Valley House (American Lager) Good Word / Green Bench No Direction Home (French-Style Pilsner) Follow, Subscribe, Share! The craft beer scene in Atlanta has exploded in recent years, yet there are few breweries in town that have the distinction of being Black-owned. Nappy Roots members Fish Scales and Skinny DeVille are hoping to shake that up. Earlier this month the duo opened Atlantucky Brewing, a brand new brewery situated in the heart of Castleberry Hill – and very aptly in a building owned by Atlanta icon Herman J. Russell's family. Check out our latest Bounce Back episode to hear how they're hoping to continue the legacy of the historic neighborhood and bring craft beer to hip-hop. You can find the video feature here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0zpLInbnQw&t=123s Be sure to follow @atlantucky on social media and let us know if you visit the brewery. This is Britt and you're listening to Radical Wellness's segment Fun Fact Friday. Did you know that using certain fish scales could help heal severe burns? In Brazil, doctors are testing this theory on patients who have suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns. They've been using the skin of tilapia, a widely farmed fish in the area. Scientists were shocked when they found collagen proteins, type 1 and 2 in the skin. It had more collagen protein than human skin. These collagen proteins are necessary for proper healing. Using tilapia skin as treatment has cut down treatment time and pain medication use.    This Fun Fact Friday has been brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas. Diversity in craft beer is improving, but we still have a lot to do Leaders of the Brew School (LOBS) is an Atlanta-based organization celebrating people of color in craft beer.  The industry has a fairly accurate stereotype of being dominated by bearded white guys, but people of all races and colors love craft beer, and LOBS wants to encourages others to drink, brew, and enjoy. We're ahead of the curve in Atlanta.  There are at least half a dozen black-owned breweries opened or opening in the city.  Speaking with members of LOBS they mention that they have new ideas and new flavors to bring to craft.  Just like we enjoy foods from many cultures, black brewers want to express their culture through beer. Even with the boom of black breweries in Atlanta there are still many challenges ahead.  Business education, funding resources, and other core needs are lacking in the community.  LOBS wants to spread the word on what is needed for true acceptance and growth of black brewers in Atlanta and across the country.  The group is actively seeking allies for idea generation, education, and brewing opportunities. One of the group's most well-known breweries is Atlantucky Brewing, founded by members of Nappy Roots.  Fish Scales and Skinny Deville joined us this week to talk about their brewery and their vision.  Through various collaborations as part of their Great American Beer Run tour (paused due to Covid-19) they've introduced many new people to craft beer.  Their brick and mortar brewery will be opening in Atlanta very soon. Hip-GRAMMY-nominated Nappy Roots dropped their latest song, “Blind Faith,” that happens to speak directly to the current turmoil that America is facing. This is the first song from the group's forthcoming album, “40RTY,” which is set to be released on Sept. 18. In addition to sharing new music monthly, Nappy Roots will also debut beer collaborations with a variety of breweries across the country each month this summer. “Blind Faith” is a soulful southern perspective about perseverance during these trying and uncertain times. The song addresses that even though people may be doing “everything right” based on their ‘blind faith,' nothing is going to improve without a major change. Even though the song was written last year, it seems especially relevant in the current climate. Produced by 808 Blake, the song also features the vocals from newcomer Lando Ameen, as well as original group members Ron Clutch, Skinny Deville, Fish Scales and B. Stille. “We were amazed at the timing of the country's current events and the release of our song, but we think that speaks to the importance and timelessness of the movement and our message,” said Fish Scales, one of the founding members of Nappy Roots. “We are excited to share our two passions all summer long: new music and new craft beer.” The band began experimenting several years ago with their home brewery, Atlantucky, which fermented their passion for microbrewing. The group has now mass-produced numerous beers across the country. This summer's craft brew collaborations include: Good Day IPA - released by Full Circle Brewing (CA) in June On My Way to GA - released by Cherry Street (GA) in July Watermelon Chiken & Gritz - released by Against the Grain Brewery (KY) in August Nappy Goat - released by Scofflaw Brewing Co. (GA) in September In addition, the group is in the initial stages of developing a reality show that will follow the band as they visit craft breweries in markets they perform to hold “real” conversations and sample regional flavors. Nappy Roots has been a best-selling hip-hop group since 2002. They have been nominated for two GRAMMY Awards and multiple American Music Award (AMA) and Soul Train Awards. Currently, the band tours 150 days annually and owns a Nappy Roots clothing line. For more information, please visit www.nappyroots.com. No stranger to challenges, this four-man collective from Kentucky tackled their obstacles and, in the process, their self-honest work emerged in form of 5 studio albums and 10 mix-tapes. As usual, Nappy Roots examine our alienable rights, reason, and truth through lyrical originality and voyage. Since Nappy Roots entered the music scene in 1998, they have remained real, humble, talented guys with inherent, undeniable southern swagger. After the international success of Watermelon, Chicken, & Grits, selling over 3 million albums, the members of Nappy Roots were flying high while still acutely aware of how far it could be to the bottom should they fall. It is that practical and genuine presence of mind that helped them sustain touring as a group these last ten years. Building a vastly loyal fan-base nationwide, fans and friends can be used interchangeably when referring to their army of followers. For most people, it is normal to only share intimate moments with friends, but for the members of Nappy, it is no different when in their living room, studio, or on stage, as they possess the gift of honesty and deliver that message with charisma. That truthfulness is especially reflected in this compilation inspired and written for this moment in time. After severing ties with Atlantic Record and going independent, it was inevitable change was his own for solo efforts. Nappy Roots had no choice but to keep it moving and did so as smoothly as possible. As the saying goes, “the show must go on,” and so it has, obstacles included. With a heavy heart and no major label record deal, Nappy Roots knew they had to remain in pursuit of their destiny and, thus, Nappy Roots Entertainment Group was formed. The members of Nappy Roots were facing foreclosures and a mountain of stress in the jobless economy, but still they remained positive and pushed on, while never forgetting where they came from and what they had accomplished. With fans constantly communicating with the members online and at shows, the guys realized they weren't the only ones having trouble. With the release of their tenth mix-tape "SH!T'S BEAUTIFUL" and the departure of Big V from the group, as he left to pursue a solo career, Nappy Roots forges forward. Between touring and recording, the four-man group focuses on consistently putting out quality hip-hop. A weak man with no vision, no diligence behind the vision, and no faith behind the diligence would have given up, but Skinny Deville, Fishscales, B. I wanted to take a look at some ways that other industries, brands, and celebrities are collaborating in the beer industry to reach new customers. Jordan Hoffart is a professional skater that co-founded Black Plague Brewing. Hoffart and Black Plague created a collab. beer with Tony Hawk, cleverly named Tony Hawps - Birdhouse IPA.  Fish Scales comes from the music world and the successful group Nappy Roots. Fish Scales, being a brewer himself, has collaborated with a number of breweries and has come up with some great ways to promote those beers and brands.

At this point in the American beer scene, a love for IPAs, Wheat Ales, Stouts, and Saisons comes from all over. Our friends and parents. Our neighbors and celebrities. When we learn that someone has an adoration for craft beer, there’s not a lot of surprise left to be had, except what kind of beer we can share as part of this fun bond. This spring, I had that debate—between a Wheat Ale and IPA—with the musician and rapper, Fish Scales of Nappy Roots. Scales, whose real name is Melvin Adams Jr., isn’t just accomplished in the world of music, but he and others in the Grammy-nominated group see beer as a next step in their creative journey. They’ve already made collaboration beers with Atlanta’s Monday Night Brewing and Louisville’s Against the Grain Brewery, and I sat down with Scales this spring in Boise, Idaho, where Nappy Roots was performing and releasing a new beer with the city’s Woodland Empire Ale Craft. In recent years, there have been a variety of musicians, groups, actors, and athletes who have gotten into the world of beer. Scales and Nappy Roots are among that growing number, and his appreciation for the history, process, and what he sees beer to be culturally is what’s propelling him toward this love while still performing about 100 times a year. As many conversations have circled around in beer lately, there is a component to this effort to bring craft beer to audiences that were long neglected. We talk about that, the cross-section of music and beer, and so much more, during the course of this conversation.  So, what’s the perspective on beer from one of the most successful musicians in America? This is Fish Scales, beer lover and rapper, of Nappy Roots. Listen in.

Year: 2018 Location: Covent Garden Tube Station, London Directions: Start at the entrance of Covent Garden Tube Station and continue your travels by Underground for the duration of the piece Duration: 31 min A Sojourn Through Saturn and Across the Southern Sea by Zadie Xa combines spoken-word narration with traditional Korean percussions and abstract compositions to create an otherworldly soundscape to be experienced on London’s Underground. Starting at the top of Covent Garden Tube Station stairwell, the piece accompanies our descent and travel into the subterranean environment. As we enter the underground tunnels, a journey through time and memory begins. The work is inspired by one of the trips Xa takes most frequently in London – that to her studio in Bromley by Bow on the Central Line. The hot temperature and harsh noises of the tube evoke an imagery of banshees and ghosts in the artist’s imagination, echoed in the work by ghostly wails and hisses. A Sojourn Through Saturn and Across the Southern Sea also includes excerpts from shaman songs and percussionist rhythms, acting as a supernatural force giving motion to the journey. Credits: Words by Zadie Xa including excerpts from ‘Fish Scales’ by Taylor Le Melle Musical contributions from Jihye Kim feat. ‘vILLIANs tHEMe’, produced by Siege the Beat Bully Zadie Xa is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice spans across painting, sculpture, textile, video, sound and performance. Her work explores and interrogates the spaces created through the overlapping and conflation of cultures that inform notions of self and hybridity. Xa frequently references personal experiences as a subject within the Asian diaspora, creating new and alternative Asian identity narratives often fantastical and within the realm of the supernatural. What's luck if you ain't from Kentucky? The founders of Louisville, Kentucky's Against the Grain Brewery got their start because they weren't satisfied with the way beer was being represented in their town.  After a disappointing visit to a local brewpub, whose brewhouse sat unused in a dark and dusty corner, they hunted down the owner and offered to buy the place.  Today, Against the Grain Brewery and Smokehouse is nestled in that spot at Louisville Slugger Field, home to baseball's minor league Louisville Bats. This week, co-owner Sam Cruz joins us to talk about their journey to opening the brewery, how beer names drive recipe creation, and how Japan and Europe are just small steps in their plan for world domination because "Everyone deserves Against the Grain beer." We're also joined by Fish Scales and Skinny Deville of Nappy Roots and Atlantucky Brewing.  If you're a regular listener of Beer Guys Radio you've likely heard us talk beer with the Nappy Roots crew before.  We discuss their collaboration with Against the Grain, Water-Melon Chiquen & Gritz, and how that collaboration is launching new beer adventures for them. Our featured beers this week were all about Against the Grain: Pome and Grabbit | Tart Wheat Ale with ginger and pomegranate London Balling | English-style Barleywine aged in Angel's Envy bourbon barrels (A Beer Guys favorite) Stave it for Later: Maple Bockin’ Pastries | Doppelbock with West Virginia maple syrup Kamen Knuddeln | Kentucky Common In the news this week we discuss a 'raid" on a Georgia homebrew club meeting, additional evidence of the world's oldest beer, and improved brewery laws in Illinois. Make sure to tune in next week as we talk with Athens, Georgia's Monk's Mead.
