Amid the ongoing reckoning over America's history of anti-Black racism, scores of monuments to slaveowners and Confederate soldiers still proudly dot the country's landscape, while schools and street signs continue to bear the names of segregationists. With poignant, lyrical prose, cultural commentator Irvin Weathersby confronts the inescapable specter of white supremacy in our open spaces and contemplates what it means to bear witness to sites of lasting racial trauma.Professor Weathersby takes us from the streets of his childhood in New Orleans's Lower Ninth Ward to the Whitney Plantation; from the graffitied pedestals of Confederate statues lining Monument Avenue in Richmond, Virginia, to the location of a racist terror attack in Charlottesville; from the site of the Wounded Knee massacre in South Dakota to a Kara Walker art installation at a former sugar factory in Brooklyn, New York. Along the way, he challenges the creation myths embedded in America's landmarks and meets artists, curators, and city planners doing the same. Urgent and unflinchingly intimate, In Open Contempt (Viking, 2025) offers a hopeful reimagining of the spaces we share in order to honor our nation's true history, encouraging us to make room for love as a way to heal and treat each other more humanely. It's MIAMI art fair week - we are ready for Art Basel, Untitled, NADA and more! We meet legendary art collecting family THE RUBELL'S!!!! Mera, Don and Jason!!!Don and Mera Rubell started collecting in 1965 while living in New York, acquiring their first work after a studio visit and paying on a modest weekly installment plan. The Rubells grew their collection by looking at art, talking with artists, and trusting their instincts. Their son, Jason Rubell, joined them in 1982 in building the collection, extending the multigenerational family passion for discovering, engaging, and supporting many of today's most compelling artists. The Rubells moved to Miami in 1992, and together with Jason and their daughter, Jennifer, began developing hotels and an art foundation and museum to house and publicly exhibit their expanding art collection.Since the Rubells' first acquisition, they've amassed one of the most significant and far-ranging collections of contemporary art in the world, encompassing over 7,700 works by more than 1,000 artists—and still growing. The collection is further distinguished by the diversity and geographic distribution of artists represented within it, and the depth of its holdings of works by seminal artists. The Rubells are drawn to emerging and underrecognized artists. They were among the first to acquire work by now-renowned contemporary artists, including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Cecily Brown, Keith Haring, Rashid Johnson, Hayv Kahraman, Jeff Koons, William Kentridge, Yoshitomo Nara, Cindy Sherman, Yayoi Kusama, Kara Walker, Purvis Young, and Mickalene Thomas, among many others. They continue to vigorously collect by visiting studios, art spaces, fairs, galleries, biennials, and museums, and by talking with artists, curators, and gallerists. If the work grabs them, they dig deeper—conducting intensive research before they welcome it into their collection.Jason Rubell started collecting contemporary art in 1983 at the age of 14, acquiring the painting Immigrants from then-emerging George Condo via Pat Hearn Gallery. At first supporting his collecting habit by stringing tennis rackets, Jason's early support of artists grew into a life-defining passion. Jason's studies at Duke and experience with organizing and touring the exhibition of his collection were instrumental in the Rubell family's decision to open their collection to the public, ensuring it would serve as a broader resource for audiences to encounter contemporary art and the ideas it explores. In 1993, the Rubells' passion became their mission when they opened the Rubell Family Collection/Contemporary Art Foundation in Miami's Wynwood neighborhood. The establishment of the RFC pioneered a new model for sharing private collections with the public and spurred the development of Wynwood as one of the leading art and design districts in the U.S. After nearly 30 years, the collection relocated to the Allapattah neighborhood in December 2019 and was renamed the Rubell Museum to emphasize its public mission and expanded access for audiences. The opening of the Rubell Museum DC in October 2022 further deepened the family's commitment to sharing their collection as a public resource, providing opportunities for residents and visitors of the nation's capital to engage with today's most compelling artists.Follow: @RubellMuseum on Instagram.Vanessa Raw: This is How the Light Gets In, the Rubell's Artist in Residence for 2024 opens on December 2nd.Visit: http://rubellmuseum.org/ Hosted on Acast. After spending over a month in the "Golden State," Gus T. debriefs on his California Counter-Racist Sojourn. We hear details on Gus' November 18 visit to Evergreen Cemetery in Oakland, the mass burial cite for the Victims of the Jonestown slaughter. Gus spoke with relatives of those who were killed in Guyana and was able to ask a group of these black people if they thought Rev. Jim Jones was a Racist. Gus also details the experience of visiting the special collections libraries at Stanford University and the University of California at Berkeley. Gus did not encounter any black librarian employed with special collections at any of these California libraries he visited. White professors like Dr. Phil Zimbardo, who conducted the infamous Stanford prison study, has massive boxed of files on the Peoples Temple and Jim Jones - including years of interviews he conducted with survivors of the Guyana slaughter. Dr. Zimbardo taught his White Stanford students about Jonestown in connection to Nazi Germany. While on this massive counter-racist business venture, Gus saw Erykah Badu, visited Stanford 8 times, Cal-Berkeley 7 times, UCLA twice and USC once. He visited the beach 5 times, hiked San Francisco's Land's End Trail, visited the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art three times, heard Kara Walker discuss her amazing new exhibit, got a haul of farmer's market goodies (yellow watermelon), and looted gigabytes worth of Jonestown material. #TheCOWS15Year INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#
We're students of the creative process, and so is Adam Moss, author of The Work of Art: How something comes from nothing. Formerly the editor-in-chief of New York magazine, these days Moss is on a quest in his studio to understand painting and through it the mysteries of the act of creation. Questions about why people create—and the diversity of process across mediums—led Adam to write his book, which features interviews with a host of inspiring folks. Kara Walker, Tony Kushner, Sofia Coppola, Stephen Sondheim, Barbara Kruger, Ira Glass, Samin Nosrat, Marc Jacobs, David Simon, and many more share their approach to the work they do in the book. We talk with Adam about the red threads that run through such varied creative expressions, finding the right creative partners, how to feed creativity, and how his own work has been influenced by his investigation into how creativity unfolds. Visit our Substack for bonus content and more: https://designbetterpodcast.com/p/adam-moss Bio Adam Moss was the editor of New York magazine, The New York Times Magazine, and 7 Days. As editor of New York, he also oversaw the creation of five digital magazines: Vulture, The Cut, Daily Intelligencer, Grub Street, and The Strategist. During his tenure, New York won forty-one National Magazine Awards, including Magazine of the Year. He was an assistant managing editor of The New York Times with oversight of the Magazine, the Book Review, and the Culture, and Style sections, as well as managing editor of Esquire. This is the second instalment of a three-part episode. How many women artists do you know? Despite the work of activist groups and scholars alike, women are still troublingly absent from the history of art. Historian and broadcaster Katy Hessel wants to change that. In September 2024 she came to the Intelligence Squared stage in conversation with the journalist, author and podcaster Pandora Sykes to write women back into art history. Discussing her bestselling book The Story of Art Without Men, she paid homage to the greats such as Artemisia Gentileschi, Frida Kahlo, Hilma af Klint, Tracey Emin and Kara Walker while also shining a light on lesser known figures such as Lavinia Fontana, thought to be one of the first women in Western art to paint female nudes in 1595. On this week's episode, I'm speaking to the incredible Jamaica Kincaid, and I am absolutely thrilled! Jamaica has been writing for decades, and is often considered a classical author of our time, bringing us work that is timeless, important and emotive. Born in Antigua, Jamaica Kincaid is a Caribbean American writer whose essays, stories, and novels are evocative portrayals of family relationships and her native Antigua.Kincaid settled in New York City when she left Antigua at age 16. She first worked as an au pair in Manhattan. She later won a photography scholarship in New Hampshire but returned to New York within two years. In 1973 she changed her name to Jamaica Kincaid, from the name she was born with - Elaine Potter Richardson This was (partly because she wished the anonymity for her writing), and the following year she began regularly submitting articles to The New Yorker magazine, where she became a staff writer for twenty years. She has won multiple awards over an incredible career, including the Prix Femina Etranger, RSL International Writer and The Paris Review Hadada prize for lifetime achievement.A keen gardener, she has written several books on the subject, including My Garden (2000) and Among Flowers: A Walk in the Himalaya (2005), a memoir about a seed-gathering trek with three botanist friends. Her latest book is poetic, illuminating and surprisingly witty. An Encyclopedia of Gardening for Coloured Children is a delightful ABC of the plants that define our world and reveals the often-brutal history behind them. Jamaica's decolonial investigation of the garden world is supplemented by brilliant illustrations from the great American artist, Kara Walker, resulting in an inventive and sometimes quite practical exploration of the truths of history in our gardens – perfect for all ages. Artist Kara Walker has investigated race, gender, sexuality, and violence through her installations, paintings, silhouettes, and films. Walker's art has won awards and is collected by museums around the world. Her work with stereotypes and the history of racial violence has pushed viewers to confront the continuing violence against Black people in America. With beloved writer Jamaica Kincaid, winner of the American Book Award, Walker is publishing An Encyclopedia of Gardening for Colored Children, a brilliant collection of essays and illustrations revealing the beauty of the natural world and the terrible history of colonialism. In July 2024, SFMOMA is releasing a site-specific installation by Walker, focusing on the global loss due to COVID-19, trauma, and technology. On June 6, 2024, Kara Walker came to the Sydney Goldstein Theater in San Francisco to be interviewed on stage by New Yorker staff writer Doreen St. Félix.

Jason Jimenez is a public information officer with Elk Grove Police Department and joins Insight to discuss how the new drones will be used. Mystifying Cost of College It's an exciting time of year for high school seniors and transfer students as they look ahead to attending a UC or CSU in the Fall. But between the cost of tuition, fees, books, meals, and housing - the reality of affording it all may put a damper on all the excitement. A detailed report by CalMatters Higher Education Reporter, Mikhail Zinshteyn shines a light on the true cost of college in California and examines why some students will pay the full cost, while others pay next to nothing. We are also joined by Meredith Curry Nuñez, Executive Director of the Northern California College Promise Coalition, who can explain what students and families can try to do to lower the cost of college here in California. California Wildflower Season The weather is getting warmer and sunnier, which means wildflower season in northern California is hitting its peak. Although this year won't be a superbloom, there are still spectacular views from the valley to the foothills. Kara Walker is the Donor Relations Director for the Placer Land Trust and Kate Mawdsley is a docent at the Jepson Prairie Preserve in Solano County. They join us with tips to take in wildflowers this spring.

I can guarantee finding students between $10,000-30,000 in scholarships for college, university, grad school, law school, etc. I charge less than 1% of what I find them, depending on which tier you choose to hire me. I try to find them based on school, major, interests, and other random/general scholarships for which anyone can apply. I cannot guarantee that you will for sure receive the scholarships, as you will need to apply for them yourself, but I can at least provide the opportunities. (It would pretty much be illegal for me to apply for things in someone else's name:) Interested? Set Up A Scholarship Strategy Session w/ Kara! In today's episode, we're thrilled to welcome back Kara, a beacon of inspiration for those navigating the path to college without the burden of student loans. As a 20-something Christian entrepreneur and amateur snowboarder, Kara shares her journey from being a high school student fascinated by personal finance to becoming a pioneer in strategizing a debt-free college education. Key Takeaways: - Kara's Philosophy: Loans were never an option for Kara. Her approach to financing college was akin to solving a puzzle, using resources like CLEP tests, scholarships, grants, and internships to not only avoid debt but to graduate with savings. - A Path Less Traveled: Kara's story is a testament to the possibilities that open up when you view college financing through a lens of resourcefulness and proactive planning. Her strategies included testing out of classes, utilizing community college for lower tuition costs, and capitalizing on various scholarships and grants. - The Iceberg of Scholarships: Kara introduces us to the concept of scholarships being like an iceberg, where most opportunities lie below the surface. She emphasizes the importance of digging deeper beyond the initial financial aid award letters and exploring options through high school advisors, community colleges, and external organizations. - Scholarships for All Ages: Kara shares that there are scholarship opportunities available even for middle schoolers, highlighting the importance of starting the search early and considering non-traditional paths to funding education. - Diverse Scholarship Criteria: Not all scholarships require stellar GPAs or essays. Many are available based on interests, majors, or even the college you plan to attend. Kara's approach involves personalizing the scholarship search to match the individual's unique situation. Kara's Tips for Scholarship Success: - Explore Beyond the Obvious: Don't stop at the financial aid award letter. Look for scholarships offered by your department, local businesses, and organizations related to your field of study. - Record Keeping: Maintain detailed records of all communications and applications. This not only helps in staying organized but can also be crucial in resolving any discrepancies. - Seek Professional Guidance: Kara offers personalized scholarship strategy sessions, leveraging her expertise to find opportunities tailored to individual profiles. With her help, students and parents can navigate the scholarship landscape more effectively, potentially unlocking thousands in funding opportunities. Do you wake up worried about everything, and just want to make sure you're following God's plan for your life? In this podcast for Christian college girls, you will learn to find GOD'S path for your college journey, and graduate with no loans or debt! I get it! It is so tough doing things the world‘s way, when everybody else is doing life without God and in their own strength, making poor choices, and taking out loans. So, if you're ready to stop dreading making decisions, and find EASY solutions to help you pay for college while following His path for your life, this podcast is for you! Hey there! I'm Kara Walker, a twenty-something entrepreneur, amateur snowboarder, recovering over-achiever, and debt-free college graduate. In college, I too was a stressed college student, looking for money and mental peace. I wondered if there were other ways to pay for college besides loans, and wished for clear direction on how to make college and career decisions! Not only was I worried about drowning in debt, but also afraid I hadn't heard Jesus correctly. Was I studying the wrong thing? Was I completely off track? I felt semi-out of control and was spiraling, until I learned how to hear from God and follow His direction. He guided me and gave me the stepping stones to pay for college. Scholarships, grants, testing out of classes, and other weird school hacks got me through debt-free! And, I'm here to teach you HOW to do this, too. If you are ready to find answers about your future, have an intimate and fruitful relationship with Jesus, and have enough money to KILL it at college, this pod is for you! I am so excited to say that my guest on the GWA Podcast is one of the most brilliant writers around today, Lauren Elkin! On today's episode we speak about feminist pioneers, Carolee Schneemann and Hannah Wilke!! Elkin is an American in London who has lived and spent extensive time in Paris, Liverpool, Tokyo, Venice and New York – as outlined in one of my favourite of her books, Flaneuse, which sees her trace cities through the eyes and steps of female writers and artists as the feminine “flaneur”, one who walks aimlessly. She is excellent at making her own a term or a trait previously steeped in patriarchal meaning. The author of four books, and the translator of others – including of Simone de Beauvoir's unpublished novel, The Inseparables – Elkin has received numerous awards for her writing. She has been a cultural critic for the likes of the New York Times, Harpers, London Review of Books, TLS, Frieze, and more; holds a PhD in English; an M.Phil in French; and is currently working on biographies on the likes of avant-garde tastemaker Getrude Stein and artist Louise Bourgeois. But! One of the reasons why we are speaking with Elkin today is because she has recently published a fantastic book, Art Monsters, which looks at a variety of female artists – from Elisabeth Vigee Le Brun to Laura Knight; Betye Saar to Carolee Schneemann; Eva Hesse and Hannah Wilke; Kara Walker and Maria Lassnig – who have centred their practice around the body. Exploring those who reacted against patriarchal portrayals and ideas of the body, Art Monsters is a fascinating insight into how women have broken from the historically-weighted past and configured a language using a voice unique to them.
