Summer in Madison is always sweet, but this year we have even more to look forward to as “Top Chef” star and Ho-Chunk chef Elena Terry's new restaurant, Tall Grass, will *hopefully* open at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art just in time for the Art Fair in the Square. Host Bianca Martin spoke with Terry on the podcast to talk about what to expect from the menu, why she chose to open a restaurant in MMOCA, and how she plans on serving both her customers and her community.
In this episode, we sit down with Margaux Huille during the latest edition of 1-54 Art Fair in Marrakech.Having previously worked on the fair in Marrakech, Margaux shares her decision to transition from the fast-paced environment of an international art fair to a new chapter in Madagascar, where she is now working with Fondation H.Our conversation traces this geographic and professional shift, reflecting on what it means to move from producing a major art event to engaging with a foundation context rooted in a different local landscape.A grounded discussion on mobility within the art world, evolving roles behind the scenes, and the personal and professional recalibrations that come with choosing a new terrain.Useful links:Website: https://www.diptykmag.com/Newsletter: Sign-up formInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/diptykmagazine/

Art fairs can completely change the trajectory of your art career, but most artists apply in a way that lowers their chances before a juror even looks twice. In this episode, I'm breaking down exactly how to apply to art fairs with a stronger, more professional application package that gets noticed. From choosing the right fair for your style and price point, to submitting a cohesive body of work, to creating clean, high-quality photos and a booth shot that looks elevated and premium. For more than a decade, conceptual artists Jennifer Dalton and William Powhida have collaborated on sharp, often darkly funny critiques of the art world's economic and political machinery. One of their earliest projects together, a satirical telethon staged during the Great Recession, planted a seed they later returned to: What would happen if you ran an art fair where every work of art was free? That question eventually evolved into Zero Art Fair, a real, fully functioning event that uses a radically different contract to redistribute both artworks and power within the art market.Zero Art Fair invites participating artists to place selected works into a five-year “store-to-own” agreement with collectors who take the work home at no cost. During those five years, ownership vests gradually; if a collector later decides to sell the work, the artist receives half of the sale price as well as a 10 percent resale royalty. The result is a system that clears storage, builds new relationships across class lines, and asserts one of the Fair's core beliefs, namely that price does not equal value. So far, Dalton and Powhida have staged two editions — the first in a barn in the Hudson Valley as part of Upstate Art Weekend, the second this fall at the FLAG Art Foundation in Manhattan — together seeding more than 400 works of contemporary art into new homes. In this interview, Dalton and Powhida explain how the Fair's unconventional contract works, why prioritizing access for people who “need help to live with art” reshaped their second New York edition, and what kinds of unexpected relationships and ripple effects have emerged along the way.https://www.zeroartfair.com/Hosted on Ausha. Today, Wendy answers a question from one of her members that is likely to benefit every artist that sends their work to or attends art fairs. The question is - how to make the most of participating in an art fair? Some of the tips Ceri shares may surprise you. KEY TAKEAWAYS Prepare your work – it needs to be robust, stable, easy to handle, pack and ship. Fragile works, sharp edges, or delicate surfaces are not your friend in an art fair environment. When you're choosing what to show, think about what will hold attention. Large or bold works might attract people in, but quiet, subtle works can still hold them, if there's something intriguing that rewards a second look. Collectors love stories, they don't just buy what they see. They buy what they understand and feel. Give your gallerist what they need to do their job well. A short blurb about the work - the inspiration, the materials, why it matters. Art fairs aren't just about shifting work; they're about building community and champions for your practice. BEST MOMENTS “People at art fairs can be unpredictable. They touch things they shouldn't. They bring buggies into booths. They lean in close and forget their elbows exist.. make sure it is fair-ready.” “Follow up within 24 hours, send PDF images or thank yous while the spark is still warm, people make decisions emotionally and quickly.” “Don't just post “Delighted to show at X Fair.” Share the journey. The packing. The travel. The install. The booth. The moment the work goes up. Invite people into the process.” “If you're celebrating, maybe stop at one glass of Prosecco instead of three. I've done plenty of hungover fares, and it's not my top recommendation.” PODCAST HOST BIO With over 35 years in the art world, Ceri has worked closely with leading artists and arts professionals, managed public and private galleries and charities, and curated more than 250 exhibitions and events. She sold artworks to major museums and private collectors and commissioned thousands of works across diverse media, from renowned artists such as John Akomfrah, Pipilotti Rist, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer and Vito Acconci. “I wanted the ofrenda to rise, to move the way glaciers move—slow, unstoppable, reshaping everything in their path. From the street to the top floor, it became a kind of queer pilgrimage. Each piece—stone, plastic, fabric—was a record of transformation, a reminder that what we build together can shift, melt, and still carry beauty. The installation was never meant to be static. From Art in Hotel Rooms to Global Galleries: How Minor Attractions Is Changing the London Scene + exclusive interviewsOn this week's episode of All About Art, I take you behind the scenes of London's vibrant art scene during Frieze Week to one of the most popular alternative art fairs in town: I visit Minor Attractions art fair, launched three years ago with a mission to make contemporary art more accessible and community-focused. In the episode, I chat with a gallerist, an artist, and one of the fair's co-founders about how the fair creates a dynamic space for art, performance, and nightlife - all housed within the unique setting of the Mandrake Hotel. I explore how Minor Attractions stands out from larger fairs with its affordable participation fees, free-form exhibitions, and lively, nightclub-like atmosphere. Plus, I share my thoughts on the fair's role in reimagining what an art fair can be and why it's capturing the attention of the London art scene.Check it out here: https://minorattractions.com/Featuring interviews with Jacob Barnes, co-founder of Minor Attractions, Yarran Gatsby, co-founder of LAILA Gallery, and artist Isabella Benshimol ToroYOU CAN SUPPORT ALL ABOUT ART ON PATREON HERE: https://www.patreon.com/allaboutartFOLLOW ALL ABOUT ART ON INSTAGRAM HERE: https://www.instagram.com/allaboutartpodcast/ ABOUT THE HOST:I am an Austrian-American art historian, curator, and writer. Send us a textMany makers struggle with the tension between creating work we love vs making work that we think will sell, especially when traditional academic instruction is often focused on concepts and what I call “Capital A Art” over the practical skills needed to make a living. What if the key isn't choosing between artistic integrity and commercial viability, but rather learning to work efficiently?Olivia Avery's experience reveals how rigorous craftsmanship training—throwing 40-80 pots daily until she could self-evaluate and create consistent work—became the foundation that allows her to pursue intricate surface decoration while maintaining a viable business. Despite the unpredictability of markets where she might sell out of teapots one weekend and mugs the next, her willingness to price her labor-intensive, highly decorated functional work appropriately demonstrates how technical excellence and clear pricing boundaries can create space for both creative fulfillment and financial sustainability, even when it means accepting a smaller but more committed customer base.⭐️ Looking for more support? ⭐️Whether you're trying to figure out your pricing, navigate the art fair circuit, get out of the art fair circuit, or just want support while you experiment with new creative directions, you'll find fellow makers who truly get it (and a ton of ever growing, practical educationl resources to support you along the way) inside of our Community. VVrkshop founder Paddy Johnson and artist William Powhida dive into their impressions of the 2025 Armory Art Fair in New York. In this episode, we explore how Frieze's new ownership has changed the fair's feel, from stricter security to the notable absence of mega galleries like Hauser & Wirth and Gagosian. We break down the numbers - more than half of 2024's exhibitors didn't return, LA galleries dropped by 26%, and smaller works dominated booths as galleries adapted to market realities. The conversation covers standout pieces that caught our attention, from Nick Farhi's provocative glory hole installation at Europa to Nikita Gale's politically charged "Interceptor" barricade at 56 Henry. We also dig into emerging art trends, including the rise of "art history textbook painting" where artists render historical styles in abstract brushstrokes, and discuss the troubling vacuum in art criticism. The episode touches on the political climate's impact on art-making and whether we're seeing the end of an era for large-scale art fair presentations. In this episode, our host Roland-Philippe Kretzschmar turns the spotlight on two art fairs that have each shaped the mid-tier ecosystem in distinct ways. The Affordable Art Fair, founded in London in 1999 by Will Ramsay, has grown into a global franchise with editions in over a dozen cities — from Hong Kong to Hamburg, New York to Stockholm. With its price cap of around €10,000, the fair has opened the art market to tens of thousands of new collectors and offered emerging artists a platform to reach international audiences. Representing AAF in this conversation is Carl-Wilhelm Hirsch, who has helped steward its mission of accessibility and growth. The Volta Art Fairs, launched in Basel in 2005, are known as the “discovery fair,” championing solo presentations and younger galleries that bring experimental voices to the fore. Active today in both Basel and New York, Volta has built a reputation as the place where collectors often encounter artists just before they break through. Here, we hear from Francesca Starling, who has been instrumental in shaping Volta's evolving vision.Together, these two fairs embody a vital counterpoint to the mega-fairs that dominate headlines. They prioritize intimacy, accessibility, and discovery — serving as laboratories where new collector generations are nurtured and where artistic risk-taking remains possible. As always, I'm fascinated by how the future of the art market unfolds, and conversations like this reveal how fairs at this scale — human, innovative, and open — might shape the next chapter of global collecting. Jen Dalton + William Powhida are the founders of the Zero Art Fair. The basic concept that drives the fair is to get great art that artists have in storage—out of storage and into people's lives, irregardless of their financial situation to purchase art. They started the fair upstate last year and this year, they were invited to present it at a highly respected institution in Chelsea, The Flag Art Foundation. Bill and Jen explore and illuminate their ideas and innovations with Dr. Lisa. They discuss their various projects and processes, (their first project together was in 2008), leading up to this fair and where they are now—getting work into art lovers hands, especially if those folks don't have the disposable income to buy art. Such a fun talk to hear how Jen and Bill have really honed their thinking and process, keeping in mind the desire to make these fairs and interventions scaleable and sustainable simply so the plans can be implemented anywhere. I encourage you to listen to this episode as Bill and Jen describe this important project which seeks to go beyond an art fair and open a dialogue about so much more—such as what is the value of art and what is the social purpose of it? Margo and Abby catch up on emerging art fairs, AI-fueled creativity, and an unexpected Spotify collab in the latest episode of Creative Current Events, a special segment of Windowsill Chats. This round of curious and creative conversation touches on everything from practical tips for artists and makers to heartwarming stories and pop culture fun. In this week's episode of the ArtTactic Podcast, host Adam Green is joined by Maximilíano Durón, Senior Editor at ARTnews, to break down one of the busiest New York Art Weeks in recent memory. This year, TEFAF and Independent moved up their schedules, landing in the same week as Frieze, NADA, Future, and several other fairs, creating a packed and fast-paced calendar across the city. Adam and Max discuss how this scheduling shift impacted the overall experience for galleries, collectors, and visitors. They take a close look at the current state of Frieze New York, the rising visibility of Independent and NADA in a softer market, and TEFAF's unique role with its blend of antiquities, design, and fine art. They also assess the market sentiment coming out of the week.

Last weekend, the US President Donald Trump signed executive orders placing 25 percent tariffs on Mexico and Canada, which were due to take effect on Tuesday. But at the last minute, the tariffs were postponed, at least for a month. Inevitably, though, the talk of a trade war set nerves jangling at Zona Maco, the art fair in Mexico City, which opened on Wednesday. Ben Luke speaks to Ben Sutton, The Art Newspaper's editor, Americas, who is in the Mexican capital, about the prevailing mood, and about the effect on the art world more generally of some of Trump's executive orders. It is also the India Art Fair in Delhi this week. Our art market editor, Kabir Jhala, is there and tells us more about the fair amid the wider social and political climate in India. And this episode's Work of the Week is Henry Fitz Jr's self-portrait, a daguerreotype, made in January or February 1840. It is thought to be the first photograph of a person made in the United States. It features in a major show at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, American Photography. We speak to Mattie Boom, Rijksmuseum's curator of Photography, about the work, and the wider show.Zona Maco, Mexico City, until 9 February. The India Art Fair, Delhi, until 9 February.American Photography, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, until 9 June.
