On this episode of the Anywhere But Here Podcast, Tom is back and tells the story of why he wasn't here last time including tales of family bereavement and recording music, both of which were incredibly stressful in different ways. There's also more music chat, film and TV shows are discussed in non-spoilery forms ahead of the inevitable Spoilercast episodes. But a surprising amount of time is taken up discussing the recent football European Championships during which England's men got to a final of a major competition for the first time for 55 years. But of course we couldn't let it end there, so there's also the story about the musician who has made a fully-working electric guitar from the skeleton of his dead uncle. Enjoy! On this episode of the Anywhere But Here podcast Ant and Tom are marking an entire year since the beginning of lockdown in the UK. An entire year of podcasting over Zoom. An entire year of the two of them not really going out all that much. How staying indoor and away from people has become normalised and how the forthcoming easing of lockdown is beginning to make them feel a bit anxious about reintegrating with society again as well as possible strategies about getting back out there again. If you've got worries about returning to some form of normality and/or have strategies that you've been forming about how to fight of an possible anxiety about the easing of lockdown, please do reach out so we can all share some 'best practices' and help each other through this transition. Ant and Tom were supposed to be joined by a viral superstar on todays episode, but things conspired against us, as they have the occasional tendency to do. So, we talk about the TV shows we've been watching, the way special effects in movies and TV have changed over time and then look back over the last 8 years of making the podcast and reflecting on how we can both draw a line from the mission statement in Episode 1 to where e are now and how podcasting has actually changed our lives for the better. On the episode of the Anywhere But Here Podcast, Ant and Tom look back on the past year as, even though two months have gone by without really covering what's going on in the news or our lives, nothing has changed. We're still in lockdown and people are still suffering. We're in a reflective mood looking back at what's happened in the last year, but also all the positives that have come out of it like changing careers and jobs, how they're going and how we're all adapting to working and schooling from home. There's also some music talk, both about us starting to practice again with a really desire to get into a room together as well as the new Foo Fighters album and whether or not certain bands evolving their sound over time works or doesn't. This episode was recorded on the 20th December 2020, the day after London and the South East of England - where we live - was put into a severe lockdown over Christmas meaning we won't be able to see anyone over Christmas except those in our support bubbles. As such, this is a bit of a therapy session where Ant and Tom are coming to grips with what this all means and how we got here in the first place. On a different note, our friend Greg, from The All Seeing Guys Podcast - and his brother-in-law Gianni managed to hit their Kickstarter goal for producing their book full of images and info on the original Kenner line of Star Wars toys. On this episode Ant and Tom talk about the roll out of the coronavirus vaccine and how it came to be that the UK got it first is probably much more influenced by the impending no deal situation with Europe than a genuine world-leading philosophy from our government, or that it even cares for its citizens. Things do chill out a bit when the topic of the Zodiac Killer and that some amateur code breakers have deciphered a message send to the San Francisco Chronicle 51 years ago. On this episode of the Anywhere But Here Podcast And and Tom try to make sense of the new 'Rule of Six' Coronavirus restrictions that come into play tomorrow as well as how they could be interpreted. Brexit's back in the news: Hooray! It seems the the UK government are prepared to break international trading laws and get sued by the EU but, will this be because they desperately want a hard Brexit at all costs, or is it because they really want to out themselves in the position of having Brexit reversed in light of everything that's gone on this year making it irrelevant. Ant and Tom tackle the thorny subject of institutionalised racism and ingrained racist societal structures following on from the murder of George Floyd by police in the US and the violence and protests that have happened around the world since. As this is a period of time that we want to remain positive, things are discussed around what good could come out of the situation. Of course, we're two white men talking about a sensitive subject. We like to think of this as a safe space to discuss things that concern us and as so we very much hope that listeners know when we're playing devil's advocate, when we're talking with some knowledge and when we're talking with very little knowledge! Still in isolation, Ant and Tom are back, but apart. Ant in his house and Tom from his garden which adds a little bit of birdsong, creaking sun loungers and flushing toilets. Obviously a lot has happened in the world, but not a lot has gone on in our lives, so the topics discussed remain a little similar to the last episode. The overarching theme is of positivity in uncertain times and allowing yourself to let go of the things that you can't control. We do hope that you enjoy this hour and a bit of essentially mindfulness coaching and self-help with a tiny bit of cynicism creeping in around the edges as well, of course, with some complete guesswork thrown on for good measure. The first episode in the post-lockdown world sees Ant and Tom talk about the benefits of the time a lot of us are being afforded due to the coronavirus pandemic. Ant's not feeling well this week, so he's staying at home. He assures me it's not coronavirus, but there's not much else to talk about right now. Tom is joined by Jo and makes the case that there really are - or were - worse things to die of after a list of diseases was shard online recently showing the death rates for England in 1632. Tom's ill again, so a warning to those of you who don't like wheezing, coughing and mucus-y sounds this might not be the episode for you. Apart from Tom's illness and his attempts to cure it Ant and Tom talk about the recent split in the royal family with Harry And Megan stepping away from the firm and going it alone. This draws comparison with event sin the Netflix series The Crown, which Tom has seen all of and Ant has started watching. The first episode of 2020 is a much more upbeat affair than the last one of 2019. But world events are really conspiring against this positive feeling. However, are we really on the verge of World War III? Ant went to see Cats, the film, and the stage shows Waitress and Dear Evan Hansen and reports back. Tom took Jo to see Sir Ian McKellen on stage talking about his life and reports back. In the absence of the expected guest this episode Ant and Tom have a chat about the various Christmas parties they've been to which range from the sublime to the absurd. Lots of computer game chat sees them get onto the historical accuracy of games like the Assassin's Creed franchise and the fact neither of them have time for long-form games any more despite loving stories and continuing to buy and download games like the Halo series, Metal Gear Solid, Assassin's Creed and others. Their lack of Christmas cheer is also dissected and it comes down to somewhere between the ridiculous amount of rain we've been having and not working in retail, listening to the radio or going into town to shop anymore. Despite this, we wish you a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year. See you in 2020. Enjoy! Ant went to watch McFly which leads to a conversation about best venues and Tom went back to Las Vegas with work, which led to a lot of talk about films - most notably Fighting With My Family, and wrestling in general. Also covered is Sasha Baron Cohen criticising social media censorship by stating that if Facebook had been around in the 1930s it would have allowed Hitler to spread his beliefs unfiltered, the Conservatives setting up a fake fact check account and the Prince Andrew interview over the Epstein allegations. Ant and Tom are back together for the first time in what feels like ages. Films include Charlie Chaplin's City Lights and The Great Dictator, Terminator: Dark Fate and Joker. The video game Detroit: Become Human is also discussed. The news articles that relate to these titles include Brexit not going anywhere, the US justice system being broken, whether automation is really helping people at work or with their mental and physical health and the founder of Boston Dynamics pushing his one-year-old daughter over to learn how she balanced so he could program his robots to act more like humans. In this episode Ant and Tom have a catch up for the first time in a month, so there's loads to discuss. Topics on this episode include Spider-Man being taken away from and rejoining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, thoughts (and hopes) for the upcoming Joker film, Tom and Jo went to an escape room last night with Ande and his other half, Heather - they beat the room, but there was a casualty. Ant has continued his new hobby of bouldering. Politics makes an (un)welcome return on this episode as it hasn't been covered for a long time. There's a low energy feel to this episode as both Ant and Tom were a bit tired after different kinds of weekends. Ant went to London to see Book Of Mormon and Tom's been playing music and getting accidentally drunk. Ex-footballer Eric Cantona gave a truly baffling speech while picking up an award this week. A Nigerian banker sold a non-existent airport to an unsuspecting Brazilian businessman. This is a positive-ish episode where Ant and Tom take on a grown up journalist taking a shot at 15-year-old climate protester, Greta Thurnberg.
