In this mini-episode, Mike and Dan talk about Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) and why it doesn't really work--despite Dan's being revved up and ready for raucous, ravaging reptiles. They also raise an old, off-the-air argument about Baby's Day Out and why good actors appear in bad movies. Caution: Dan sings several times. Noot Noot and Shalom. Discussing a monster movie in a substantive manner is not a task to be treated lightly. It is a difficult task, indeed. What is there to make from Big Monkey fighting Big Lizard with Fire Breath? Well, as it turns out, there is a lot to talk about. For instance: What does Big Monkey mean? What does Big Lizard mean? What does it mean that they're fighting? Now, of course, you have to concede that there is a meaning at all to argue that any variation of meaning can arise (and you cannot simultaneously argue that the lack of meaning is meaning, for the absence of something cannot be a definition; at least, not as defined as a presence). So, for meaning to exist there must be agreed-upon interpretive factors set against agreed-upon objective facts, even if the latter is difficult to define or even observe. If there are these elements of existence, then you can extrapolate from the fact and the speculative into "meaning". So what do these giants battling symbolize and what can that tell us about our present? How do we use that information for how to act in the future? All that and more is discussed in this week's episode; an episode of mighty proportions; an episode of tales and tails; an episode with more fire-breathing dragons than any other episode not involving fire-breathing dragons; THE Godzilla V Kong episode. NOTES To start off Frank and John do a little housekeeping and discuss the current release schedule of the podcast. Then we talk about the Monsterverse and cinematic universes and their potential future. Frank then runs down the plot of the film, and John and he discusses their thoughts on certain plot elements used in the movie. Up next they dive into the characters, and their relationships to each other, and to the monster. Then they discuss the fights between Godzilla and Kong and how that creates the drama and tension for the film. John and Frank then go over the expectations of the film and how it failed to live up to them and completely fulfill them. Finally, they discuss their problems with the film and their favorite moments. QUOTES "It's not fucking Faulkner." I know it's been awhile since this one came out, but maybe that mean you've had plenty of time to sit down and watch this movie that really lives up to the title, Godzilla vs. Kong. In the past, this franchise has really divided the four of us, so this monster mash up really had a tough audience at COtR. There are some complaints, but maybe not from the person you're thinking of. Enjoy!
In this episode, I review Warner Bros. Godzilla vs. Kong. I will discuss the film in full detail so this is a spoiler review. Enjoy!
Recorded April 7, 2021 Once again we break from our format and discuss a new movie months after its release. We talk Godzilla vs Kong, the newest edition of the (hopefully) expanding Warner Bros Monsterverse. Along the way, we discuss all the movies leading up to this clash of Titans, including Godzilla (2014), Kong: Skull Island, and Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Being the big fans of the G-Man that we are, there is much to discuss. Have we been topped as the preeminent pod of big monsters? Has Marvelfication gone too far? Will the Monsterverse continue? How to Survive is now on Patreon! Support us at Patreon.com/HowtoSurvivePod It's episode 238...and these are dangerous times. Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) tells the story of...well you can probably guess. There's about 40 minutes of story and 40 minutes of fighting and somehow the film is still 2 hours long. Make of that what you will. It's time for titans, punch-ups on battleships, Hollow Earth (theory and practice), anti-gravity helicopters and building-sized ancient axes. What more could you ask for? A hastily put together quiz? You got it! All of which leads to one important question: How would you survive? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: there can't be two alpha Titans.
