This week, Ellen and Alona are joined by journalist Nicola Kelly, whose new book Anywhere But Here investigates the UK's broken asylum system. Nicola used to work for the Home Office as a press officer on the immigration desk. But why did she leave? On the podcast, she unpacks Labour's controversial new immigration white paper and why the party is embracing tough rhetoric. She exposes the relationship between the Home Office and client journalists, and shares some shocking findings from her reporting. Will third-country “return hubs”—similar to the Conservatives' Rwanda scheme—actually happen under Starmer? And what would that mean for the people affected?Plus, Ellen and Alona discuss whether AI-generated writing is a “banger” or a “dud”.Nicola's book Anywhere But Here: How Britain's Broken Asylum System Fails Us All is out now. She also writes on Substack at ‘Not Another Snowflake'. To read more, head to prospectmagazine.co.uk, or watch our best interviews on YouTube (@prospect_magazine). Hosted on Acast. Greg interviews Anthony and Chris from Long Island, NY's Overthrow on episode 169 of the Hardcore Archive Podcast. Overthrow were first active in the Long Island and NYHC scene in the mid-1990s and played shows throughout the northeast with bands like E-Town Concrete, Indecision, Kid Dynamite, Shutdown, and Madball. The guys in @overthrow_lihc were all friends before starting the band, and discovered hardcore together while they were in high school. We hear about their experience playing shows in the New York area and how the band came to be affiliated with Triple Crown Records. Anthony and Chris discuss the reunion shows over the past decade that ultimately lead to the band reforming and writing new music. The conversation shifts to discuss growing older while still maintaining connections to the hardcore music community, how hardcore has provided an outlet for grief over the loss of friends and family, and how hardcore influenced them as fathers. We hear about the new songs Overthrow has recently recorded, two of which can be found on the popular music streaming platforms, and the forthcoming record due out this fall. We wrap up the interview by hearing about a few of the shows Overthrow has coming up with @gridironhardcore and @e.townconcrete on August 9th and @extinctionad and @swornenemynyc on September 8th. Be sure to check out Overthrow's new songs "The Calling" and "Anywhere But Here" on all the major streaming platforms. For updates on the band follow @overthrow_lihc. In 2007, I spent six weeks in a hostel in the middle of Guatemala just “because”.Truly, I'd never felt so free. The two years prior had been spent working like a donkey, with good people but in a field I hated. The endgame? Admission to the Supreme Course of Queensland as a lawyer. It was an accolade I spent 7 years working towards..Only to quit, 6-weeks to the day later. And so, there I found myself in a computer shop in Puerto Escondido, Mexico, on a steaming April afternoon checking my emails when my brothers friend messaged us on Facebook.“Wanna come visit?” – he wrote, “I'm just down the road in Guatemala!”We looked at each other.Of course we would. It wasn't even a QUESTION.We were free. The world was our oyster. And we could do anything, be anyone, go anywhere! And so it came to be that I ended up spending the best, most carefree, most FUN 6-weeks of my life living out of a backpack in a dingy hostel dorm room in Antigua.Acutely aware that I had opted out of life for a little minute, and feeling grateful as heck for it.Five years later, I started my online business chasing that kind of freedom again. And on the surface, the promise of it all felt.. intoxicating.Time freedom – to work when I wanted!Location freedom – to go back to Central America, or London, or ANYWHERE BUT HERE!Financial freedom – to make more than a doctors wages working on the goddamn INTERNET!I wanted it.The sense of adventure. The possibility. The wonder that came from not knowing what would come next. The Tuesday afternoons spent outside (and not in an air-conditioned cubicle)ALL OF IT.
Our exit today has us packing up to Beverly Hills to begin our new lives. No we aren't talking about the Beverly Hillbillies. This week, we are discussing Anywhere But Here, written Alvin Sargent, based on Mona Simpson's book and directed by Wayne Wang. And there is lots of talk of the two stars, 90s favorites Susan Sarandon and Natalie Portman. Plus, Tripp and Ross talk about the long career of the great Alvin Sargent, other parent-child movies, the rough history of this movie, Mona Simpson's surprising family connections, 90s weepy movies, CSI, and, of course, some great character actors. Tripp's recent episode of The Great American Pop Culture Quiz Show. Powered by RiversideFM. Theme Music by Jonworthymusic.
Mona Simpson is the bestselling author of seven novels including Anywhere But Here, The Lost Father, A Regular Guy, Off Keck Road, My Hollywood, Casebook and, most recently, Commitment. Mona studied poetry at Berkley. She got her MFA from Columbia. During grad school, she published her first short stories in Ploughshares, The Iowa Review and Mademoiselle. She worked as an editor at The Paris Review for five years. She also teaches at UCLA. She knows the industry from several angles and has worked in it for decades. She joins Marrie Stone to talk about Commitment and writing multiple point-of-view novels. They talk about maintaining momentum in a novel's middle, bringing bygone eras back to life, breathing life into your characters, playing the role of psychologist as writer, the role of research and much more. In many ways, Commitment might be considered a “what-if” novel. Some aspects bear resemblance to Mona's life and other aspects are very different. Mona and Marrie also discuss the generative idea of “what-if” novels, how writing one novel sometimes begets another, and other ways to generate ideas for your fiction. Get ready for an episode featuring UK indie rock band, Sorry. This genre-blending band burst onto the music scene with their remarkable debut album ‘925', which was a musical kaleidoscope and garnered praise from influential outlets like Stereogum and The Guardian. Last year, they returned with ‘Anywhere But Here', an album that, while more traditionally structured, still delves into multiple sonic realms. As they prepare for their upcoming Australian tour, we sit down with vocalist and guitarist Asha Lorenz to discuss their expectations for the shows, the band's origins, the creative influence of distance in their songwriting, and the inspiration behind the brilliant "Anywhere But Here" record. Welcome back to the 'Dating Myself Series' here at Anywhere But Here! Where this week we are looking into codependent qualities as a single person.
On this week's episode of Anywhere But Here, we are welcomed with the presence of four of my closest friends!! The girls are visiting Denver to celebrate my birthday and Aryelle's...so why not make a podcast out of it?? Since we are all "girls girls", we are reflecting on female friendships and what value they hold to each of us. ***WARNINING*** Very poor audio due only having a single microphone, so sorry in advance!!
on this week's episode of Anywhere But Here, I wanted a change of scenery and just had something to get off my chest… at times we find ourselves so immersed in the race of life, always fighting to reach some goal and we don't allow room to just slow down and accept where we are in the moment so today i am inviting you all to appreciate where you are and to slow down with me! (and get really distracted haha)

On this weeks episode of Anywhere But Here, ya girl is wrapping up her first full semester of classes and feeling really great about herself...so cheers! To start the episode off I talk about summer plans, visiting Atlanta, and checking off therapy on my vision board list! With therapy on the brain, I wanted to reflect on my first experience of therapy from middle school and why I think I am ready to try it out again. And to conclude the episode I felt like it was right to talk about when you make it through the "storm" and come out on the other side of things! This is one of the coolest episodes I've ever done. One of the most nostalgic episodes Ive done. A place I have been going to since I was a young kid. I love Cowtown skateboards because they represent Az so hard and every time Ive ever walked into one of their shops ive felt comfortable and welcome. Thats why it was so easy to do an episode there cus Alex, the manager at the central and cambelback location, is so down to earth and such a nice guy. I have been having so much positivity coming my way with cowtown cus I also won a free complete cowtown skateboard at "first friday" in downtown phx a few days before we did this podcast. Make sure you go check out the new cowtown skateboarding video "Anywhere But Here"! Thanks to cowtown and Alex! enjoy the episode! It's the end of an era and so on brand. Rather than wait until a big round number, or until our 10th anniversary in January, this is the last episode of the Anywhere But Here podcast. Ant and Tom explain all the reasons that have gone into this decision on the episode, but rest-assured that this is by mutual consent and is a decision that came about quickly and with no bad blood. In fact, this is a decision that will probably make our friendship better. On our way out of the door we talk about all the movies and TV we've been watching in the last few month, just like normal, so it's not all bad news! We've had a blast over the last nine and a half years and we sincerely thank each and every person that has listened, befriended us, sent us messages and especially become Supporters or Patreons. We may be back here and there when the mood takes us, so stay subscribed just in case. So, for one last time: Enjoy, and thank you! On this episode of the Anywhere But Here podcast Tom and Ant catch up on what they've been doing in the last two weeks including a lot of TV watching for Tom and joining a Dungeons and Dragons group for Ant. They discuss the TV Shows they've been watching and vaguely talking around the new Dr Strange In The Multiverse of Madness film because Ant hasn't seen it yet. (A Spoilercast will be recorded and put on Patreon this week.) The Amber Heard vs Johnny Depp Trial was also discussed, but mainly from the point of view from how it's been represented on social media. Who should we believe, if either of them? Finally, the Tories got a kicking in the local elections in the UK, which is always a nice thing to see and talk about, but who are their main rivals and will this be the way a general election goes? Many of us spent years saying, “I can't wait to get out of Greensboro.” Now, years later, we've surrendered to our accidental love for and even pride in this city. In this podcast, we'll explore the various things that have kept us here. We'll invite local guests, keep you posted on upcoming events, and we'll provide opportunities for you to continue to explore your connection to Greensboro - all while laughing at each other and having fun. Welcome to Anywhere But Here - join us!
On this episode of the Anywhere But Here podcast, Tom stages an intervention on Ant who took his family to see Wicked again... for either the seventh or eighth time. But the conversation turns to Ant's meds and the Marvel TV show Moonknight, but eventually gets onto the main topic about how Netflix seems to be shooting itself in the foot, not just from raising prices during a global cost of living crisis, or even locking down the number of people who use each password, but also the fact they're adding adverts. Do people care enough to cancel their subscriptions? Is everyone unhappy about the changes? What's the best streaming service out there? All these questions and more are discussed, but feel free to pile in on the socials. There's some good news too: Sir David Attenborough has been made Champion of Earth, which sounds like something from a comic book. Find out how we think he would have stopped Thanos. Enjoy! We're back!! Welcome to season two of ANYWHERE BUT HERE! Where two girls are simply talking out of their ass and trekking through their 20s! If you're new here, we are Nalah and Miah...best of buds who weirdly decided to create a podcast in the midst of the end of the world. And we are loving every second of it. We talk along the lines of personal developments, life goals and aspirations, the feminine urge to want a man while also hating all men... you just never know what you will hear when you listen to our podcast. You'll also meet some of our amazing friends along the way who are also finding their way! This season we are making a bigger splash, as we have created a Youtube channel to post vlogs as well as video-versions of our podcast episodes! WHO'S THE DADDY? It's the unknown-parentage episode with Charles & Camilla, Ted Bundy, Liv Tyler, Steve Jobs, Eric Clapton, Jack Nicholson and more… ‘Ello guv! You ready to Eavesdrop? Get ready for high tales of royal lineage, because this week, Geordie & Michelle look at people who've been lied to about their parentage… But first, Michelle's robe is back in the studio, now in grubby winter fleece, while over at Geordie's place, the guinea pigs are gone but definitely not forgotten and Tameera the modern mystic gets a lovin' shout out for steering us towards this week's first case study: the man who claims to be the secret love child of Charles and Camilla… Who is Simon Durante-Day? Did Camilla really abandon him at 8 months old? Did the Royals file his teeth down and change his eye colour? Why is he putting all these crazy pictures on the internet comparing his family to the Royals? How are Holly and Phil wrapped up in all of this? And will Charles and Camilla ever agree to take DNA tests? Why would you want those two as your parents anyway? And why does Geordie sound like she's from Spitting Image? Could Michelle's theory actually be true??? Listen to find out! Geordie then moves on to talk about Abdulfattah "John" Jandali and Joanne Simpson and the child they gave up for adoption. Why are we interested in this adoption story? Did Jandali know who his son grew up to be? Why are we talking about the movie Anywhere But Here? Can you guess which tech giant is Geordie talking about? She then moves on to the secrets and lies in Eric Clapton's family… Why did he think his nan was his mum? And what happened to his mummy? Was that the reason he grew up to be a bit of a d*ck? Why does Geordie mention Jamie Foxx? And who is Jack Nicholson's REAL mother? Michelle then talks about Liv Tyler's origin story, Geordie sings ‘Can We Still Be Friends' and ‘I Saw The Light', the pair discuss the video for Aerosmith's Crazy and Alicia Silverstone is named the most beautiful girl of the 90s.
