Bird feeders full of seeds or suet can spark nonstop action. Chickadees flitter in and out. Finches expertly crack one seed after another, while jays, doves, woodpeckers and sparrows all join the flurry. This might bring to mind a neighborly picnic — but it's not quite as friendly. At any given moment, there's a distinct hierarchy in effect. More dominant birds are usually able to displace lower-ranking birds. But not always! The next time you're watching a bird feeder, try to figure out who's in charge.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org.Want more BirdNote? Subscribe to our weekly newsletter. Looking for a faster, lighter way to vacuum pools without hauling a cart? We break down the new Shrimp kit and stack it against the trusted Bottom Feeder to help you decide what actually fits your route, your pools, and your budget. From first impressions to field use, we get specific about size, throat diameter, runtime, handling, and durability—so you can choose based on results, not hype.We start with why compact vacuums are trending and where plastic mini units fall short for pros: limited lifespans, hard-to-find parts, and hidden replacement costs. Then we dig into the Shrimp's pro-grade build—LiFePO4 battery rated for 1,500 to 2,000 cycles, about 2.5 hours of runtime, a sealed magnetic switch designed to beat water intrusion, stainless threaded parts, and brass-plated connectors. You'll hear how a five-inch throat keeps suction feeling strong, why the smaller footprint is a win on steps, spas, fountains, and water features, and what changes when you pull backward with a lighter head.If you've relied on the Bottom Feeder, you'll appreciate the context. Its wider head covers more with each pass and stays planted, making it a great match for routes with moderate to heavy debris. The Shrimp trims size without losing effectiveness, trading coverage for agility and making quick spot vacs painless. We also cover runtime versus charge time, the included 120-micron bag, the carry handle and 20-foot pole extension, and the current $1,199 price point—plus when that investment beats a cycle of disposable plastic vacs.By the end, you'll have a clear framework: Bottom Feeder for broader coverage and heavier leaf loads; Shrimp for precision, light-debris routes, and tight spaces. Many techs will benefit from carrying both, using the Shrimp as the compact, go-anywhere solution and the Bottom Feeder as the primary workhorse. Ready to upgrade your setup and save time on every stop? Slow Beef Cattle Herd Rebuilding In 2025 The Slow Cattle Cycle Of 2025 Cattle producers, consumers, and policymakers are all asking the same questions: How high will cattle prices go, when will they peak, and what happens next? The reality is that the cattle cycle remains uncertain, with no clear sign yet of a bottom in herd inventories or a timeline for rebuilding. Through the first three quarters of 2025, there's been no strong evidence of heifer retention. The mid-year Cattle Report showed the lowest beef replacement heifer inventory on record, and the 2025 U.S. calf crop is projected to be the smallest since 1941. Feeder cattle supplies outside of feedlots are also at historic lows. While beef cow slaughter is down roughly 40% since 2022, stabilizing the herd, limited replacement heifers — down about 27% from the 2017 peak — mean herd growth in 2026–2027 will be slow. Experts project cattle prices to keep climbing into 2026 and possibly beyond, with a gradual peak and sustained strength through the decade. A sharp drop appears unlikely, but the pace of herd rebuilding and heifer retention will determine how the market unfolds. Bottom line: The U.S. beef industry is on a slow rebuild, and cattle prices are expected to remain historically high for years to come. The Balancer® Edge program, developed by the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA), is designed to add value for cattle producers by verifying Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics in their herds. To qualify, at least 75% of sires must be registered Gelbvieh or Balancer bulls, with each bull carrying a minimum of 25% Gelbvieh genetics. Verification Requirements for Producers Participation in Balancer® Edge requires simple but essential documentation, including: First and last calf born dates Headcount support Registration papers of sires to confirm Gelbvieh genetics This verification process ensures genetic accuracy and builds buyer confidence in Gelbvieh and Balancer-influenced cattle. Cattle Industry News Cattlemen's Beef Board Approves $38 Million Budget The Cattlemen's Beef Board (CBB) will invest approximately $38.1 million into programs of beef promotion, research, consumer information, industry information, foreign marketing, and producer communications during fiscal 2026, subject to USDA approval. In action at the end of its September 3-4 meeting in Denver, Colorado, the Beef Promotion Operating Committee (BPOC) approved Checkoff funding for a total of 14 "Authorization Requests" - or grant proposals - for the fiscal year beginning October 1, 2025. The committee, which includes 10 producers and importers from the Cattlemen's Beef Board and 10 producers from the Federation of State Beef Councils, also recommended full Cattlemen's Beef Board approval of a budget amendment to reflect the split of funding between budget categories affected by their decisions. AMS approved the use of new technologies that produce marbling scores for Prime, Choice and Select grades for beef, according to a statement announcing the tech updates. The three new vision grading instruments also will assist in the application of Yield Grades and measuring of the ribeye area that often is used in scores of Certified Beef Programs. These certifications are issued by a range of organizations and companies, including Certified Angus Beef, National Beef Certified Premium, Tyson's Chairman's Reserve Certified Premium Beef and Nolan Ryan's Tender Aged Beef, for example. The technology allows for consistent, uniform application of USDA beef grades, which drive payments for producers, help value determinations for packers and communicate quality to U.S. consumers. China was the fourth largest destination for U.S. beef last year but President Donald Trump's tariffs on China starting in February soured trade relations. In March, China revoked export licenses for U.S. producers, leaving the beef industry with only a few eligible exporters. Compared to the first seven months of 2024, exports to China are down 46% and down 47% by value at $481 million. Among the top six destinations for U.S. beef, only South Korea booked a volume increase through July — up 9% by both volume and value. All the others, including Japan, Mexico, Canada and Taiwan, are off so far this year. However, according to a recent Rabo Research Report, global cattle prices continue to rise as global volumes are contracting. Although, for example, beef imports from Brazil into the U.S. rose 25% compared to last year in the first half of 2025, higher tariffs will have a material impact on the trade between Brazil and the US, analysts assured. In Europe, the tight market is also attracting higher imports. The latest round of U.S. tariffs included an additional 40% on the already existing 10% global rate and 26.4% non-quota duty on Brazilian beef imports. Brazil supplied a record volume of beef into the U.S. in the first half of 2025, and RaboResearch believes this additional tariff will have a material impact on the trade between Brazil and the U.S. Nearly a month after the U.S. began applying further import tariffs on Brazilian beef, shipments remain strong in a year-over-year comparison, and shipments to the U.S. have remained relatively stable even after the tariffs have taken effect.
