By 1986, the Phil Collins machine was in full gear. After coming off big solo success with the diamond selling No Jacket Required and having played on both sides of the Atlantic for Live Aid, the public (and the record company) couldn't seem to get enough of the Genesis drummer turned lead singer. The band sought to capitalize on that momentum by sharing music writing credits (each of them wrote lyrics solo) and starting from scratch in the studio at The Farm. The result would be their greatest popular success including their first #1 in the US and 5 total Top 5 Billboard hits. But it being the mid-80s, the music wasn't always the only story. They had already had some turns on MTV in the previous 5 years (especially Collins solo work) but videos for their big hits were in regular rotation for over a year, including Land of Confusion which used caricatured masks and puppets from the British show Spitting Image. The unflattering rubber dopplegangers of the band followed the exploits of Ronald Reagan fighting the bad guys as Superman and was nominated for video of the year by MTV (former Genesis frontman Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer won instead). It allowed Genesis the opportunity to sell out arenas and stadiums in the US which anchored over 100 tour dates to support the album. But does this standout from Phil Collins solo material? While Collins penned tracks like Tonight, Tonight, Tonight and In Too Deep did have eerily similar hallmarks of Phil's solo stuff, Mike Rutherford's Throwing It All Away is right out of Phil's playbook. While the Tony Bank's written Domino shows they didn't completely abandon their prog rock roots, Anything She Does is a flacid attempt at 80s pop with a video that inexplicably featured Benny Hill. The musicianship is high quality as always but the technology of the day can sound dated and does anyone want to hear Phil play electric drums? Hugh Padgham had the magic touch in the 80s and with Phil but maybe that contributes to the songs sounding generic in some places. We like the album but do we hold it in as high regard as Selling England By The Pound? We try to figure that out... His guest is impressionist, comedian and podcaster Matt Forde. They talk about Rich's Mastermind failure (again?), working on Spitting Image and how weird it is that out of all the characters that show has done, it's the puppet of Paddington that has got them into the most trouble, working with the divine genius Alice Levine, interviewing the Prime Minister and other dodgy political figures, why there's a better option than going back in time to kill baby Hitler, plus a long chat about the negatives and surprising positives of having had spinal cancer, why it's helpful to talk about this and why cancer isn't as bad as the possibility of Nottingham Forest getting demoted. Extraordinary Creatives
Disaster as a Gift: The Long Game of Creativity with John Lloyd

Extraordinary Creatives

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 20, 2026 96:35

Welcome to the 200th episode of Extraordinary Creatives: two hundred conversations with artists, thinkers, makers and cultural leaders about the strange, beautiful, often messy reality of building a creative life. And I couldn't imagine a better guest to mark this moment than the brilliant John Lloyd CBE. One of the great creative architects behind some of the most loved comedy formats of the past fifty years. He began at the BBC in the 1970s and helped create programmes that have become cultural landmarks: The News Quiz, Not the Nine O'Clock News, Blackadder, Spitting Image, and the long-running curiosity engine that is QI.  Along the way he co-wrote the original Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy radio series with Douglas Adams, directed the iconic Genesis “Land of Confusion” video, and has won more BAFTAs than almost anyone alive. But what struck me most, isn't just the scale of his career, it's the way he thinks about creativity itself. John talks openly about the difficult things that shaped him and the strange truth that some of the most uncomfortable moments in life later reveal themselves as gifts.  He reminds us that every creative life includes adversity, and that the ability to transform those experiences into fuel - into insight, humour, empathy or invention – is what stops artists giving up. John is a powerful reminder that great ideas take time. Some of his shows took years to get made. Whether you're a writer, artist, musician - or simply someone trying to make meaningful work  - there is wisdom in this conversation. KEY TAKEAWAYS When we stay with an idea long enough - clearing away the sand, listening more deeply than we speak - what looks ordinary begins to reveal its own quiet, astonishing shape. There are two selves. There's the little yaky person in your head - then there's the true self, which only arrives when you're in the zone, when you're in the state of flow. The heartbreaks, the projects that fall apart - those “disasters” become compost, feeding the work we were actually meant to make. BEST MOMENTS “Creativity is like archaeology. You shovel mountains of sand… and eventually you uncover the sphinx.” “Ideas appear. The difference with creative people is they notice them.” “Deep listening means you're paying attention with not just your ears, with your whole body.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://www.instagram.com/johnlloydqi https://www.qi.com HOST BIO With over 35 years in the art world, Ceri has worked closely with leading artists and arts professionals, managed public and private galleries and charities, and curated more than 250 exhibitions and events. Dr Rachel Knightley is joined at the Writers' Gym by Emmy award winning script-writer, novelist and director Doug Naylor. He co-created the long running hugely successful sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf, has written or co-written every episode across thirteen series and has directed over twenty episodes. Doug also co-founded Grant Naylor Productions in 1991 which made series IV to X of Red Dwarf. Doug has also written three best selling novels, and a few non-best selling ones too. He co-wrote a number one single which shall remain nameless, but has the words Song and Chicken in the title. Doug also co-created the Carlton TV series The 10 Percenters, for which his script Table 11 won a British Comedy award. Formerly he was Head writer and Script editor on the original run of the hugely popular satirical puppet show Spitting Image and he has also written a number of award winning radio shows. His alma mater was Liverpool University where he claims he was thrown out, at the end of his second year, for drinking too slowly. In September 2025, Doug's children's novel Sin Bin Island was published by David Fickling Books and he is currently working on the second in the series. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doug_Naylor   https://www.pbjmanagement.co.uk/artists/doug-naylor

They discuss not knowing how to wear trousers or shake hands, his inappropriately named dance group, challenging your childhood religion through comedy and why that was potentially more perilous for Eshaan, than Richard, whether it was right that Eshaan ended up doing the brown voices on Spitting Image, not wanting to be the spokesperson for any community or being forced to challenge inequality, when you believe yourself to be everyone's equal. The show included an erudite and interesting alternate point of view from an Asian member of the audience, which sadly was not picked up by the microphones, but which we hopefully discussed fairly nonetheless. After abandoning his university studies in psychology in Manchester, Doug spent the better part of a year visiting Manchester Central Library, reading film and TV scripts and teaching himself the mechanics of comedy writing; unbeknownst to his parents, who thought he was still pursuing his degree. After breaking into radio comedy, he became the head writer and script editor on the 1980s satirical puppet show "Spitting Image". It is rare on a resurection episode to feature a guest whose life itself features a resurrection of sorts, but nevertheless, here is where we find Matt Forde this time... You will hear all about it (and by way of trigger / sensitivity warning, there is some cancer talk and health conversation just so you are aware), but of course as with any guest on here, any such matters are handled with care and humour and you know how things go on here - it's all love and safety so just know that going in. But for real, this is a genuinely fun and very funny episode, containing so many goodies and gems throughout, including how Matt became friends with Brick Top off Snatch! The Writing Community Chat Show is back for 2026, and we are kicking off Season 17 with a masterclass in humor. Whether you're writing a laugh-out-loud sitcom or looking to inject a bit of levity into a dark thriller, this guest is the person who quite literally “wrote the book” on the subject. We were joined by the legendary Dave Cohen. a founding member of the Comedy Store Players, a BAFTA-winning songwriter for Horrible Histories, and a writer for iconic shows like Spitting Image and Not Going Out.Dave shared his incredible journey from Leeds to the heart of the UK comedy scene, offering invaluable advice for writers at every level.Key Takeaways from the Interview.* Comedy is Character: Dave emphasizes that the best jokes aren't just one-liners; they are born from character. In comedy, the obstacle isn't just an external “baddie”—it's often the character themselves looking in the mirror.* The “Momentary Removal of Sympathy”: Referencing comedy guru Dennis Norden, Dave explains that we laugh at characters like Stan and Ollie or Basil Fawlty because of a brief break in our sympathy, only to reconnect with their humanity moments later.* Humor in Genre: You don't have to be writing a “funny novel” to use comedy. Dave discusses how writers like Mark Billingham use humor to provide a necessary change of pace and relieve tension in even the grimmest thrillers.* The Shakespeare Mindset: Dave gave us a sneak peek into his brand new project, The Shakespeare Mindsetpodcast. He explores how Shakespeare was essentially writing “sitcom” elements into his deepest tragedies and why the Bard is the ultimate guide for navigating the complexities of modern life.* Finish the First Draft: A vital tip for all writers: use a different “brain” for each draft. The first draft is for getting it down without judgment; the third or fourth draft is where you start “punching up” the jokes.Connect with Dave Cohen.Dave is passionate about building a community for comedy writers. Episode Description: "Project Thaw" exposed—alleged plot to bring Harry back involves educating Archie/Lilibet in UK schools. Deep Crown destroys the premise: "Does anyone seriously believe Harry would place an ocean between his children and their mother? He's constructed his entire post-royal identity around not repeating Diana's experience." Kate vs Camilla explodes—Queen "astounded" Kate entertaining Harry reconciliation, source claims "poisonous showdown at palace" where Camilla called Kate "naive and reckless." TIARA WARS: Kate wears Oriental Circlet with 2,600 diamonds/rubies at State Banquet, deliberately overshadowing Camilla. Source: "Camilla was hopping mad, said it was another blatant attempt to hog the limelight." Deep Crown: "Catherine isn't preparing to be Queen—she's already performing the role. That tiara was making the subtext text. Camilla faces uncomfortable reality that if Charles recedes, her relevance recedes with him.Catherine represents everything Camilla never managed: youth, public adoration, unassailable position." Meghan DELETES Thomas Markle's phone number—no plans to visit dying father in Philippines. Swedish Princess Sofia confirmed introduced to Epstein 2005—declined Caribbean trip invitation. Andrew stripped of final military rank, demoted Vice Admiral to Commander. Spitting Image mocks Meghan's "woke marmalade"—Paddington puppet warns "she needs to watch her back." Andrew moving to Sandringham "shoebox," sources describe "clutter turning move into months-long room-by-room excavation." Kate/Pippa rift speculation—Pippa missed carol service, was "diving off yacht when Kate had surgery." Sarah Ferguson's alleged spending: $1.1M annually including $32.5K in ONE HOUR at Bloomingdale's.Harry denies calling Archie "African child," accuses Tina Brown of "inventing words." New Epstein WhatsApp messages released: "$1000 per girl," "18-year-old from Russia." Kate pledges support to William for 2026 monarchy overhaul. From the early days of radio comedy and Spitting Image to building one of Britain's most enduring cult TV shows, Doug brings thoughtful, funny stories from a lifetime in entertainment. They explore Doug's path through sketch shows, number one singles, and the moment Red Dwarf finally became the show he'd imagined. Doug spills the beans on why the American remake went sideways, and how he'll never get used to the strange feeling of meeting fans who say the show helped them through tough times. They also touch on the big one: the ambitious new Red Dwarf project that was suddenly cancelled — and what Doug plans to do with it next.

Meghan Markle is back in the satirical firing line as Spitting Image mocks her As Ever marmalade as “woke,” with a Paddington-style bear warning she is “on my turf now.” Meanwhile, mixed reporting fuels the usual “are they going back” drama: one set of sources claims Meghan would only consider a UK return “for the right price,” while Rob Shuter insists she has “zero intention” of moving the children back across the Atlantic. Megyn Kelly piles on with fresh criticism of the Sussexes' post-royal branding, as commentators debate whether their Hollywood clout is fading. After the break, Queen Camilla faces a Christmas without both of her children this year, continues her long-running Buckingham Palace tree-decorating tradition for seriously ill children, and admits binge-watching Rivals helped her recover from pneumonia. Plus, new photos from Clarence House offer a rare look at the King's private world, including a prominently placed picture of Charles holding Prince George at his christening—and a reminder of how distant he remains from Archie and Lilibet.Hear our new show "Crown and Controversy: Prince Andrew" here.Check out "Palace Intrigue Presents: King WIlliam" here.

Jan Ravens, the acclaimed impressionist at the heart of Dead Ringers, grew up learning to change the mood of a room long before she ever changed her voice on stage. In this conversation with James O Brien, she reflects on a childhood shaped by humour, instability and her father's illness, and how those early pressures sharpened the instincts that later defined her career. She traces the journey from school impressions to Cambridge Footlights, becoming the first woman to direct its revue, and the leap from Carrott's Lib to Spitting Image and beyond. Jan talks candidly about ambition, class, resilience and the unexpected power of comedy to steady you when life feels uncertain. It is an honest, warm and often very funny look at how she found her place in British satire.Find out more about Dead Ringers 25th Anniversary tour here

Alongside the triumphs came struggle- including a midlife breakdown that forced him to re-examine success, purpose and the art of living.Blending humour, honesty and philosophy, Lloyd explores the connection between curiosity and creativity, why he believes comedy can change how we see the world, and how even life's disasters can turn out to be gifts.Find out more about The 42nd anniversary edition of The Meaning of Liff here

Court filings and witness testimony revealed one of the most grotesque and surreal details of the Jeffrey Epstein saga: a caricature puppet of Prince Andrew allegedly used during an encounter at Epstein's Manhattan townhouse in 2001. Both Virginia Giuffre and Johanna Sjoberg testified that the puppet, resembling Andrew's likeness from the satirical TV show Spitting Image, was brought out by Ghislaine Maxwell as a prop while Andrew sat with them on a couch. According to Sjoberg's sworn deposition, Maxwell placed the puppet's hand on Giuffre's breast while Andrew simultaneously touched Sjoberg's. Maxwell, when later questioned under oath, admitted to recalling the puppet but denied gifting it or participating in any sexual act. The bizarre nature of the claim—royalty, puppetry, and sexual humiliation—made it one of the most unsettling anecdotes to surface from the trove of unsealed Epstein documents.Prince Andrew's continued status as a Counsellor of State—a constitutional role allowing him to act on behalf of the monarch—remains one of the most glaring contradictions within the modern British monarchy. Despite being forced to step back from public life after his disastrous Newsnight interview and subsequent settlement in Virginia Giuffre's civil suit, Andrew legally retains the ability to perform official duties if King Charles III were incapacitated or abroad. That includes signing state documents and receiving new ambassadors. The arrangement exists because the law automatically grants Counsellor status to the sovereign's spouse and the next four adults in the line of succession over the age of 21, meaning Andrew's position persists by statute, not choice. Critics across the political spectrum have called it a constitutional embarrassment—one that symbolically undermines the monarchy's moral authority by keeping a figure tainted by scandal in a position of potential power.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com

Critics across the political spectrum have called it a constitutional embarrassment—one that symbolically undermines the monarchy's moral authority by keeping a figure tainted by scandal in a position of potential power.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.

Victoria Beckham is no stranger to headlines. And now she's revealed that intense media scrutiny led to her developing an eating disorder. Cue more headlines. One particular article stood out, which asked why those around Victoria - including her PR team - didn't seem to address the problem at the time. This week, David Yelland and Simon Lewis look at what this tells us, not just about Victoria Beckham's story, but the delicate line that people in the world of PR must tread when they are dealing with a client facing a highly sensitive and personal issue. How do you discuss the elephant in the room?On the extended edition on BBC Sounds, we're on the comeback trail. Three-time Olympic dressage gold medallist Charlotte Dujardin has begun a very low-key return to her sport after serving a ban for 'excessively' whipping a horse. So far, she's not given any interviews. But is that sustainable - and what are the PR options for trying to return to the spotlight after a scandal? Also, it's never a good idea to wind up a bear. Especially one from Darkest Peru with a serious marmalade habit. But that's what the makers of Spitting Image have done. The Michael Bond estate and Studio Canal - who make the Paddington films - are taking legal action after the much-loved bear was depicted as a drug-taking, foul-mouthed beast in a YouTube series. Time for David and Simon to sit down with Paddington and offer some reputational repair work.Producer: Duncan Middleton Editor: Sarah Teasdale Executive Producer: Eve Streeter Music by Eclectic Sounds A Raconteur Studios production for BBC Radio 4

Palace Intrigue delivers the most shocking royal revelation yet as Prince Harry secretly registers six-year-old Archie for Eton College—the same elite boarding school attended by Prince William, Harry himself, and future king Prince George. This explosive move suggests Harry plans to bring his son back to the UK despite the devastating family feud, with Archie potentially sharing classrooms with his royal cousins.Insiders reveal Harry feels his children are "missing out on the extensive family network" enjoyed by William's kids, though Meghan may need convincing about the plan. The security-heavy school would reunite the next generation of royals, with friends noting "statistically, Eton would be safer than an American school thanks to their gun laws."Meanwhile, royal biographer Ingrid Seward decodes Meghan's carefully chosen Harry birthday photo, suggesting she selected his "hunkiest" pre-marriage military image for strategic reasons. Plus, Harry's secret condolence visit to the Duke of Kent reveals his continued royal connections, while Spitting Image brutally satirizes the Sussex brand with puppet parodies of their Netflix ventures. From secret school plans to puppet mockery, this episode exposes Harry's desperate attempts to bridge two worlds while the royal war rages on.
