For this episode, Danny Hurst is joined by comedian, writer and broadcaster, Susan Murray She won the 1st Jongleurs New Act award and has been wowing audiences since the mid-90s. Susan has written for and appeared on many radio shows including Jeremy Hardy Talks to the Nation and Stephen K. Amos´ Life: An Idiot´s Guide and is one of the Huffington Post´s funniest women tweeters and stalwart of the British comedy circuit and the Edinburgh Fringe and has performed across the world. Susan and Danny discuss the UK comedy revolution that happened in the 80s/90s, including The Comic Strip and The Young Ones. Susan shares some great stories and trivia about some of the UK`s biggest comedians. If you can´t get enough of these podcasts, head to https://www.patreon.com/DannyHurst to access my exclusive, member-only, fun-filled and fact-packed history-related videos. KEY TAKEAWAYS Susan Murray runs the Red Imp comedy club in Walthamstow. Working on Spitting Image and one of the UK´s first adult animation shows was her path into comedy. Susan is the person behind the current comedian’s Christmas party. Held in January because everyone is working at Xmas. 95% of comics get their gigs from the Facebook page Susan started. It's still quite hard being a woman in comedy, but things are improving. Some rooms are terrible for comedy. Gigs in low ceiling rooms are easier, but ones with mirrors or round tables are hell. You can´t second guess a room, some of the gigs Susan thought would be dreadful e.g. A room full of stag parties were great. When Susan makes bread it always looks like John Merrick´s head. Comedians who do the Edinburgh Fringe end up losing money. BEST MOMENTS “I'm Scottish, manufactured, Black Country raised.” “Then The Young Ones burst on the screen, and it literally blew my mind.” “Barry Cryer was an anecdote machine.” “Gigs are a bit nicer than they used to be.” “Why would you heckle a deaf comic?” “I had people ringing me up going, can you never stop baking your s**t bread.” “You get to be really rude to people in the audience, they love it, and then you get paid for it…. What more could you want from life?” “Comedy is a delicate flower you can´t shove it anywhere and expect it to thrive.” EPISODE RESOURCES http://susan-murray.co.uk/up-coming-gigs http://www.redimpcomedy.com Find a gig FB page - https://www.facebook.com/groups/284118201700872 HOST BIO Historian, performer, and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. Thomas Ruff talks to Ben Luke about his influences—from writers to musicians, film-makers and, of course, other artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped his life and work.Ruff was born in 1958 in Zell am Harmersbach, in what was then West Germany, and has, over five decades, extensively probed the forms and possibilities of photography. Though he is a key figure in the international generation of artists that emerged in the 1980s and experimented with the very nature of the photographic medium and discipline, Ruff has carved out a singular practice. He works in distinct series whose formal characteristics vary enormously, but are underpinned by experimental unorthodoxy, technical curiosity and conceptual rigour. Each new group contributes to a profound philosophical exploration of the photographic image and what it means to make a picture. But while the intellectual underpinning of his work is unwavering, Thomas makes prints that are remarkably beautiful objects. Operating in a medium that remains associated with the factual record and documentary, he has relentlessly made the case for a photographic practice in which imagination is a primary agent. He discusses his interest in “the puzzle of photography”, the distinctive geneses of his various series of work, and his conviction that while seeking an “intellectually high-end product… of course I want to have fun”. He reflects on the early influence of the photographer Ernst Haas, how Piero della Francesca influenced his early Portraits series, how he chose to study art over astronomy, yet outer space has remained a core concern in his work, and how the satirical television show Spitting Image proved an unlikely influence. Of course, he reflects on the work of numerous photographers, from Eugène Atget and Walker Evans to Lou Landauer and his teachers in Düsseldorf, Bernd and Hilla Becher. Plus, he answers our usual questions, including the ultimate, “What is art for?”Thomas Ruff: expériences lumineuses, David Zwirner, London, until 22 March; his work features in Typologien, a survey of 20th-century German photography at Fondazione Prada, Milan, 3 April-14 July. Today, Danny speaks to actor, writer, voice artist, comedian and impressionist, Steve Nallon. In this lively episode, Steve shares some great stories about his time working on Spitting Image and with Janet Brown, Mike Yarwood, Rory Bremner, Rik Mayall and scores of other stars. He explains how he developed his iconic Margaret Thatcher impersonation. Steve shares why, despite being such a prolific performer he actually prefers anonymity over fame. They also discuss the personal and professional adjustments those involved in the entertainment industry make as they age. If you can´t get enough of these podcasts, head to https://www.patreon.com/DannyHurst to access my exclusive, member-only, fun-filled and fact-packed history-related videos. KEY TAKEAWAYS As a kid Steve had a vivid imagination and loved acting out the characters he made up, but he was so shy he couldn´t perform in front of others. Even well-known comedians like Les Dawson worried about “dying on their arse”. There are comedians that say funny things, those that do funny things and those that simply are funny. Steve explains the difference. When an audience does not laugh, it feels incredibly personal. Spitting Image became so culturally significant that the FT used photos of the show's puppet versions instead of real politicians. The Spitting Image puppets were powerful. Some stars even found themselves becoming more like the puppet version. Most `politicians develop a persona that they use in public. Impressions are a caricature, just the essence of a person. As you get older doing impressions of certain people becomes harder. Writing about things that catch your attention and things you have experience of works well e.g. Steve using Maggie Thatcher in a ghost story. From a certain angle the statue of Nelson looks like he is pleasuring himself. Steve explains why he has always resisted appearing on TV as himself. BEST MOMENTS “I always was a performer. As a kid .. I would become all these different people.” “What didn't come naturally was performing in front of an audience.” “You die on your arse.” “Be open to anything, and everybody…that was the BBC training in 1975.” “I did attempt Trump, but it was so bad they cut it.” “I was walking down Brewer St a couple of days ago and there was only one sex shop.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://www.nallon.com HOST BIO Historian, performer, and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. STUFF FROM THE LOFT - Dave Dye

Whatever happened to funny ads?Have clients stopped buying them?Or have agencies stopped writing them? They used to dominate the ad breaks.Humour was the first tool you reached for after being handed a brief. Why? Well, as that Poppins women says ‘A spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down'.Actually…did they dominate ad breaks?Maybe I've slipped on my rose-tinted specs again?I reach for an old D&AD Annual.Randomly, I pick up 1991's.34 tv and cinema ads featured; 28 were funny.Of the 28, the most awarded were for Barclaycard and Red Rock Cider. They feel slightly odd today. They aren't ‘advertising funny', they're actually funny. In a way that I can't imagine them popping up between Bake Off?I don't know whether it's because they don't take the product very seriously? Some even make fun of it. (Imagine; making fun of the very people who pay the bills?)Or maybe getting bigger laughs than the programmes that surround you feels like bad form?Like you have aspirations above your station.I decided to do a bit of rudimentary desk research, discovering that humour is still surprisingly popular. The public love it, apparently.Much preferring it to being lectured to or bullshitted. So why the lack of funny ads?Even ad testing companies are urging us to produce more.(Yes System 1, I'm talking about you.)In an effort to better understand this humour thing, I went straight to the Chairman of the Board, the Grand Fromage, the Capo di Tutti Frutti – John Lloyd. Not only did he shoot both the campaigns above, he'd spent two decades beforehand producing the funniest stuff on tv, including Not The Nine O'clock News, Blackadder and Spitting Image. We had a lovely chat, hope you enjoy it.

On today's podcast I chatted with the comedy actor Jon Culshaw who is known to us all for his many roles and TV appearances.  From an early age Jon discovered he had the ability to make people laugh with his impersonations of big characters in his life such as his grandmother's housekeeper, Mrs Jump.  From hospital radio to Spitting Image, from Deadringers to the Royal Variety Show, Jon has made us laugh for decades.  There is also the serious side with the narration of David Bowie in The Final Take for the BBC World Service and playing the role of Boris Johnson in the Channel 4 docudrama, Partygate. Most of all Jon is a super nice man who is a great listener and has a lovely positive outlook on life. Enjoy the show.!   Podcast Production by Greg Canty Greg's blog Greg on Twitter  Greg on LinkedIn Email Greg with feedback or suggested guests: greg@fuzion.ie

BEN BAKER on that fateful night ALF turned up on the UK TV schedules. First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on June 23rd 2024. I've been trying to get BEN BAKER back onto VISION ON SOUND for quite some time now, but various obstacles kept on getting in our way, which meant that our long-planned look at SPITTING IMAGE had to remain in the shadows as its anniversary sped by in a sea of cough linctus, paracetamol, and Lem-sip. Never mind, we'll probably get round to it one day. In the meanwhile, as he recuperated, for another project he's been working on, BEN had been researching the 1980s US science-fiction sitcom ALF. ALF was a series which was all about the adventures of the moggy-munching Alien Life Form who chose to live with the Tanner Family in the San Fernando Valley area of California, and BEN suggested that we might be able to have a chat about the TV schedules for the very night ALF first appeared on UK television screens on April the 25th 1987, and that sounded like a pretty good idea to me, and so he sent me a copy of that night's TV listings which might even pop up on the social media feeds, for you to read along with at home, if I remember to post it. So, over the course of this hour, as well as discussing ALF, we also consider other US imported TV of the era, and the bizarre nature of the Saturday evening schedules of the late 1980s. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

British social etiquette might be famed for its liberal use of please and thank you, but civility is very much a European import, according to John Gallagher, professor of Early Modern History at the University of Leeds. As courtiers visited the French and Italian courts in the 16th century they not only learnt new languages but new rules of behaviour too. As the century progressed civility began to be weaponised as travellers sought to distinguish themselves from the ‘barbarous' foreigners. The lexicographer and Countdown regular Susie Dent explains the etymology of terms like civilised, polite and barbarous. And she explores changing tastes in what is deemed impolite: in the Middle Ages the biggest taboo was any profanity that used the Lord's name in vain, whilst the words we consider the most offensive today were commonplace. For years Professor Louise Mullany has been studying the prevalence and power of politeness in our everyday speech and actions. In her book, Polite: The Art of Communication at Home, at Work and in Public she uncovers the unwritten rules of behaviour, exploring the gender and generational differences, the art of the political apology, and whether politeness standards really are declining. The comedian and impressionist Matt Forde unpicks the argument that satirical shows like Spitting Image have contributed to the perceived lack of civility in politics. For his latest podcast, The Political Party, he is aiming to behave impeccably as he interviews a candidate from all 650 constituencies before the general election. Producer: Katy Hickman

Although James rarely cries in movies, he was exceptionally moved by the film and loved it. He was also impressed by #2 Civil War, a dystopian USA-set thriller that is realistic and timely. An amazing and riveting film which is a great piece of cinema, he feels writer/director Alex Garland is one of our greatest filmmakers. We went to the Spitting Image musical in the West End. It was worse than we'd ever imagined. It's the closest we've ever come to re-enacting the scary parts of Event Horizon. It's the least funny thing a human can create. And we did it all... for you.   Get the full episode on Patreon here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/86768274   *SCOTLAND ALERT* Get tickets to our live show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival on 4th August here! https://www.trashfuture.co.uk/event-details/trashfuture-live-at-the-edinburgh-fringe *STREAM ALERT* Check out our Twitch stream, which airs 9-11 pm UK time every Monday and Thursday, at the following link: https://www.twitch.tv/trashfuturepodcast *WEB DESIGN ALERT* Tom Allen is a friend of the show (and the designer behind our website). #435 Glisten With Mother - Richard has had to deal with a persistent heckler (aka his son) and surprised himself with the cliche that he responded with. His guest is banker turned comedian Eshaan Akbar. They discuss not knowing how to wear trousers or shake hands, his inappropriately named dance group, challenging your childhood religion through comedy and why that was potentially more perilous for Eshaan, than Richard, whether it was right that Eshaan ended up doing the brown voices on Spitting Image, not wanting to be the spokesperson for any community or being forced to challenge inequality, when you believe yourself to be everyone's equal. The show included an erudite and interesting alternate point of view from an Asian member of the audience, which sadly was not picked up by the microphones, but which we hopefully discussed fairly nonetheless. Plus the story of a twisted testicle with a happy ending PS Eshaan and Richard successfully shook hands as they left the stage.Come and see us live http://richardherring.com/rhlstpSUPPORT THE SHOW!Watch our TWITCH CHANNELSee extra content at our WEBSITE Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/rhlstp.
