Another Pixar movie was changed to be "less gay" by the powers that be at Disney. Elio was reportedly an obviously gay kid who made himself a pink tanktop and had a "trash-ion show" on the beach. The original director "got gone" and they spent a TON of money to effectively REMAKE a good portion of the movie. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the budget was FAR north of $200 million. Elio crashed and burned at the box office this weekend, and now mainstream media is questioning why they can't seem to have any big hits outside of sequels. Maybe they should ask John Lasseter? Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of June 2o, 2025. The latest animated movie from Disney/Pixar, called "Elio," is our Big Movie of the Week, and it has some fun, imaginative elements that your kids will likely enjoy a little more than you. Producer KellieAnn Halvorsen even offers her own review of the non-sequel and non-boot film “Elio,” after Andy finishes his “What to watch?” segment. If you're into the (non) zombies of "28 Days Later," then you'll check out "28 Years Later" and watch Jodie Comer and her son try to avoid infected folks while searching for a supposedly non-infected doctor living on the mainland. On streaming, "Frozen: The Broadway Musical" gets the "Hamilton" treatment on Disney+, with a filmed version of the live show. And if you read the YA novel "We Were Liars," then you can check out the dramatized series adaptation on Prime Video. The brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing nerdy with a goal to publish a weekly "What to Watch on the Weekend" minisode taken from KSL-TV's Friday segment, and two deep-dives a month on shows, creative works, artists, local events, and other fandom topics. Based in the beautiful beehive state, Fan Effect celebrates Utah's unique fan culture as it has been declared The Nerdiest State in America by TIME, and is hosted by KSL Movie Show's Andy Farnsworth and KSL Podcasts' KellieAnn Halvorsen. Listen regularly on your favorite platform, at kslnewsradio.com, or on the KSLNewsRadio App. Join the conversation on Facebook @FanEffectShow, or Instagram @FanEffectShow. Fan Effect is sponsored by Megaplex Theatres, Utah's premier movie entertainment company.

Disney-Pixar's Elio opened to a record low of only $20-22 million, which is significantly less than Elemental. And this movie reportedly cost upwards of $300 million to make. This makes Lightyear's box office look GREAT by comparison... Watch this podcast episode on YouTube and all major podcast hosts including Spotify. We've got more zombies than you can shake a stick at this week on Breakfast All Day. First off, we review "28 Years Later," the long-awaited reunion of Danny Boyle and Alex Garland in a Britain plagued by rage virus. This is a non-spoiler review, but we're doing a live spoiler chat at our YouTube channel on Wednesday, June 25 at Noon Pacific, so check back with us then and share your thoughts. In theaters now. Then we catch up with the two films that preceded it: "28 Days Later" (2002) and "28 Weeks Later" (2007). We realized in retrospect that you don't need to have seen either of these movies to get into the new one, but we were glad to have the conversations. If you're looking for something a little more lighthearted for the whole family, there's "Elio," the latest animated adventure from Disney Pixar. It's a sweet, gentle film for these stressful times about a misfit kid who dreams of having aliens abduct him. This is minor Pixar, but it's beautiful. In theaters. Finally, we wrap up with a lengthy Movie News LIVE! Among the topics we discuss are the "Jaws" 50th anniversary, the "Brokeback Mountain" 20th anniversary, the trailer for the new Bruce Springsteen biopic "Deliver Me From Nowhere," and Francis Ford Coppola taking "Megalopolis" on the road. Disney's Elio is available to watch in cinemas now.
The Oscar-winning Canadian animator and director Domee Shi (Bao, Turning Red) is back with a new Disney-Pixar movie, “Elio.” It's about an 11-year-old who's obsessed with getting abducted by aliens. How to Train Your Dragon is only the latest piece in a cultural puzzle that dates back thousands of years. How realistic are dragons, anyway?“While other places have ponies or parrots, we have…dragons.”When you think of modern day animated classics, the first projects that people tend to think of are the titans of Disney/Pixar. But under no circumstances should you sleep on the brilliant people at Dreamworks Animation who have their own share of legitimate masterpieces in the form of the Shrek franchise, last year's brilliant The Wild Robot, and the endlessly impressive How to Train Your Dragon franchise. And when it comes to the central concept of that franchise, dragons, well…the folks at Dreamworks have done it about as well as anybody ever has!Think about it. The use of dragons in storytelling far transcends the “pop culture” label. Forget movies, TV, and animation, there's literature, mythology, and something in our collective unconscious that compels us to keep returning to the familiar imagery associated with them. While we usually associate dragons with a particularly European flavor of fantasy, if you pick any culture or society, you'll probably find a dragon myth or story. That's how pervasive they are.Not only that, but they're timeless! Some of the biggest franchises of not just the last century, but this century, prominently feature dragons. Lord of the Rings, Dungeons & Dragons, Game of Thrones, and yes, How to Train Your Dragon are proof that some old-fashioned concepts never really go out of style. Is it possible that with a slight evolutionary shift we could have ended up with dragons crowding our skies? And why IS the dragon concept so universal, anyway? All this and more in the latest episode of Does it Fly? right here…https://youtu.be/Ww84E8udLrASUGGESTED VIEWING We based much of our discussion in this episode on the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, specifically How to Train Your Dragon, How to Train Your Dragon 2, and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. We hadn't seen the live action remake that's currently in theaters at the time of recording. But while we have your attention, we'd like to direct you to a nearly forgotten piece of dragon-related media. 1981's Dragonslayer is a remarkably dark piece of fantasy from a forgotten period where Disney was experimenting with more adult themes in its work. It's not quite Game of Thrones but there's plenty of gore and some sexy themes that you wouldn't expect. It's also the rare dragon flick that's genuinely scary at times!FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! Flying Reptiles?!?While it's natural to think in terms of the pterodactyl when thinking of real world parallels to dragons, those weren't the only flying reptiles of that long ago age. But you might also want to consider a reptile that is still flying around today, the Draco lizard, when you wonder how dragons might eventually evolve. As long as they have hollow bones….Convergent Evolution and Evolutionary BottlenecksHakeem takes us on quite a journey as he tries to explain the processes by which dragons could have evolved. But two fo the key concepts involve evolutionary bottlenecks (which likely influenced human development) and the concept of convergent evolution, which would help explain why dragons were to develop very specific and distinctive traits (check out a bunch of real world examples right here). But What About Fire-Breathing?You might think that a fire-breathing dragon is far-fetched, but we'd like to remind you of the existence of the electric eel, the bombardier beetle, and the spitting cobra, all of which have distinctive self defense mechanisms that are pretty alien to humans. So the idea that a dragon could contain methanogens in its gut that provide the fuel for a fire might not be that far-fetched after all!Read the Books!A quick reminder that the How to Train Your Dragon movies were based on a book series by Cressida Cowell. Check ‘em out!“We have wonder…”That lovely quote from Dean Deblois that Tamara found comes from the documentary special feature, Where No One Goes: The Making of How to Train Your Dragon 2, which covers a lot more ground than just that second movie! The Hero's JourneyAs Tamara points out, if you haven't read Joseph Campbell's The Hero's Journey, that will unlock so many touchpoints in the stories you love that you won't look at your favorite franchise the same way again!WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?For some of our other takes on excellent modern animation, check out our episodes on The Incredibles and Big Hero 6!Need more Does it Fly? fantasy deep dives in your life? Episode SummaryErin and Rachel travel 700 years into the future to discuss WALL-E (2008), Pixar's robot romance with an unintentionally anti-capitalist message. Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that's just a big vault full of gay thoughts locked deep in your brain. This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) hangs out with returning guest, stand-up comedian Kia Barnes (@kiacomedy), to talk about why Disney Pixar's Inside Out 2 Should've Been Gay. Ellie (@elliebrigida) couldn't make the recording, and she's devastated to have missed it, especially since Inside Out 2 was the movie she and Bailey saw on their very first date. From the second Val glides onto the screen, it's instant gay panic, from Riley and every emotion in her head. Whether it's Anxiety (voiced by queer queen Maya Hawke), Envy (played by none other than Ayo Edebiri!), or Ennui (channeling the energy of a deeply disaffected gay French man), Riley's internal world is working overtime. Add a suspiciously queer-coded coach to the mix (we're pretty sure her wife is hidden in the background somewhere) and the gay subtext is basically screaming at us in every scene. Kia shares how deeply she related to Riley, as a baby gay who just wanted to impress the older, cooler butch girls. She even smoked a cigarette (as an asthmatic!!) to get a girl's attention. Riley trying to fit in with the butch boys club? Been there. We also talk about how hard Disney tried to scrub the gay out… and failed spectacularly. From the queer-coded coach to the LGBTQ+ cast to the metaphorical coming-out arc hidden inside a vault, Inside Out 2 practically demands a rainbow overlay. And let's not forget “Beardville”, Riley's imaginary Mount Crushmore of forced heterosexuality, where she literally has to carve boys into stone so she doesn't forget them. Subtle? Absolutely not. Accurate? Tragically, yes. Then there's the “big dark secret” locked deep in Riley's mental vault. It's glowing purple, heavily guarded, and very clearly not ready to come out yet. We all know what it is (spoiler: it's lesbianism), but we'd genuinely love to know what straight people think it is. We also break down the tension between Riley and Grace, whose jealous-ex energy is off the charts. Whether Riley's feelings are mutual is still TBD, but that tension? So real. From baby gay chaos to closet metaphors and a whole lot of repressed sapphic energy, we know one thing for sure: Inside Out 2 Should've Been Gay. Levi Lusko knows what it's like to spiral, and he knows how disorienting transition and change can be to a person - emotionally, physically, spiritually, and mentally. After a mid-life crisis that started a cycle of questioning his purpose, peace, and future, Levi realized that he was actually in a perfect position for God to lead him into greater faith. In this episode, we laugh, we go deep, and we unpack Scripture to help us biblically deal with anxiety, pause in Jesus' presence when life is chaotic, handle transitions and seasons you don't want to be in, and so much more. "You have to push through that first fear barrier because it's one of those universal themes in storytelling, the fear of failure." The spark of a great story can come from the most unexpected places. In my recent conversation with Matthew Luhn, an accomplished storyteller and former Disney/Pixar creative, we talk about the magic of universal themes in storytelling, whether for film or business. "Inside Out 2" premiered earlier last summer to enormous success for Disney Pixar as the long-awaited animated sequel to 2015's "Inside Out" went on to gross over $1.699 billion worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing animated film of all time in the process. The film has been nominated for the Critics Choice and Golden Globe for Best Animated Film and is shortlisted for Best Original Score at the 97th Academy Awards. Two-time Emmy and Three-time NAACP Image Award-winning, television Executive Producer Rushion McDonald interviewed Dawnn Lewis. For decades, my guest has used her celebrity platform for mentoring, lecturing, giving concerts, and donating her time and talents to causes across America and abroad on behalf of Organizations such as UNICEF, UNCF, Congressional Black Caucus Against HIV AIDS, and American Heart Assoc. She is amazing. In addition to acting, she does voice work on Star Trek Lower Decks, and she currently lends her voice to recurring characters on The Simpsons and Futurama. Dr. Dawnn Lewis is the proud daughter of Guyanese parents and is a force of talent and compassion who seamlessly navigates the realms of entertainment and philanthropy with grace. As a Trumpet Award and Grammy Award-winning singer, she has left an indelible mark on the music world, earning multiple NAACP Image Awards, BMI Awards, and ASCAP Awards for her songwriting prowess. Her music has been used in several other Film and TV soundtracks for Disney, ABC, NBC, HBO, and WIGS Films. Her talents extend beyond music, with a diverse portfolio of work as a film, television, and stage actor, series TV creator/producer, and esteemed inductee into the Women Songwriters Hall of Fame. She returned to Broadway in the original cast (2019-2022) of the exhilarating TINA: THE TINA TURNER MUSICAL (12 TONY Nominations), co-starring as ZELMA BULLOCK, Ms. Turner's mother. Dr. Lewis can be seen in a variety of projects, including “Young Rock” alongside Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and the NETFLIX animated series “Karma's World,” created by Chris “Ludacris” Bridges. Her versatility continued to shine in her role of “Captain Carol Freeman” in “Star Trek: Lower Decks” even as she prepared for the release of her holiday film “Black Jack Christmas” on BET+, half of which was filmed in Jamaica. She has lent her voice to iconic characters in beloved franchises like “The Simpsons,” “Curious George,” and Disney/Pixar's Academy Award-winning films “Inside Out” and “Monsters University.” Dr. Lewis is dedicated to advocacy and leadership in the entertainment industry, holding positions on various boards, including the National Center for Civil and Human Rights and the SAG-AFTRA National Board of Directors, and serving as a Trustee for the SAG Pension Plan and chairing the SAG-AFTRA Singers Committee.
