2020 New Mexico NFHS Summer Study Session Defensive Schemes  Head Coach Aaron Ocampo, Centennial High School, Las Cruces, NM Defensive Coach We Hurley, La Cueva High School, Albuquerque, NM Dennis Barela (4s): All right. Good morning. Morning, Ken. So we're back first training session of 2020 summer. We ended the spring rule session last month, about four weeks ago where we did, I don't know, 24 webinars and had, and you name it. We had a festival on giving us some great training from NFL down to division two to high school, high school experts from like Bob Arknown from Gannett, right from Alabama, just giving us some, some great, great training to the New Mexico high school officials. Dennis Barela (43s): But this morning we have two gentlemen from Albuquerque and from Las Cruces, they're high school football coaches that have a great to train us in defensive schemes and how they see the, the game of football through a defensive coaches perspective. So it's going to be interesting. This is the coaches opportunity to really talk to officials and kind of get everybody on the same page. Dennis Barela (1m 18s): So with that, Ken, are you there? Ken Adent (1m 22s): Yeah. Good morning, Dennis morning, everybody. Thanks for tuning in. It's been quite the spring session that we had, and I hope you guys, if he didn't get a chance to watch these live hit behind the flag website, AFOA ref website, and you guys can pull up all these previous webcasts, but today I'm really excited for, because we'd been talking about learning defensive schemes and defensive formations to make us better officials and really excited that these two coaches jumped on the first gentlemen who's gonna is on before I introduce. Ken Adent (2m 4s): And are you there? I can't tell. Okay. If not, no, we've got coach West Hurley from the high school defensive coordinator. As you guys all know these two coaches have their teams are always powerhouses year after year, and it never happens without a strong defense. So West has been married for 11 years to his wife. I don't have her name. They have an eight year old daughter Aspen, and a seven year old son of Noah West played for Carlsbad. Ken Adent (2m 38s): I didn't know that he'd been a quaver coach for eight years. Last four years have been defensive coordinator. Liquid has been in many state championship games. West is a national board certified math teacher and the Dean of students at the Academy at APS. So quite the resume there, Wes, I personally want to you for coming on. When I reached out to the head coach there he was Brandon. He just jumped all over this. So you guys at have always been really helpful for us officials. Ken Adent (3m 12s): You guys have even showed up at some of our meetings for the Albuquerque group and given us your time there. And we appreciate that as well. So take it away West the screen jurors. Wes Hurley (3m 29s): Thank you guys. I just want to say first, thanks. Thanks for having us. It's it's a pleasure to get to do this. I was talking to Dennis and I think this is like a, just a really cool experience and a really cool thing too, to sit down and actually talk football. And like me and Aaron were talking about, you know, we talk about football all the time with kids and clinics and stuff like that, but to be able to do it with reps is it's a really cool experience and a really good idea. I think. So. I just want to say thank you for the opportunity and thank you guys for, for all that you do for the game and, and allowing us to do it. Wes Hurley (4m 4s): So let's get started here. Can you guys see that? Yeah, we can see your screen. I don't know if I can hear him. Okay. Awesome. All right. So, so our basic defensive scheme is a four to five. That's four downline men, two inside linebackers, and then five DBS. Wes Hurley (4m 37s): We have two strong safety is on either side. Those... Support this podcast

2020 Spring Study Session Recap  Dennis Barela (3s): Welcome to behind the flag podcast. We want to thank our sponsor, Get It Right Enterprises, Get It Right offers great training software to learn football rules. They can be located at www.getitrighttraining.com. Bob Arnone is the owner and founder of get it right and has truly provided some great football training to the New Mexico official association. My name is Dennis Barela. I'm a Albuquerque high school football official working line of scrimmage. And I also just finished my first year of division two last year at the line of scrimmage. Dennis Barela (35s): Cohost is Ken Adent. He has a back judge out of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and also has just completed his first year of division two college football officiating, Rhonda, thank you support. And we truly hope you enjoy our webinars that could be locate at Behind The Flag on YouTube and our podcast at Behind The Flag. Our website is www.behing-the-flag.com Ken Adent (1m 5s): Nice to be back long break too long of a break for me. But spring was amazing. I don't know about you, but Oh my gosh, the topics, the speakers, it was, it was absolutely amazing. I think I have no less than five, six pages of notes. Haven't had time to go through and organize them. But what did you think? Dennis Barela (1m 25s): And here we go. After that spring session, I think we did about 24 webinars that turned into podcast and it just made the time fly by 24, 24 webinars in about six weeks I believe, or less. And the speakers we had, which was just crazy. So we had to take a break. Ken Adent (1m 47s): Yeah. We also have to be honest, it didn't start off as that as our goal, it started off as a couple of guys missing football, talking one on one or to talk more football and just, you know, get other guys involved with that passion that we have. And it just blossomed. Dennis Barela (2m 5s): Right. And I was surprised on everybody. We re reached out to agreed to, to bring some training to New Mexico. I mean, it didn't matter who it was. They said yes. Before we could stop asking the question. Ken Adent (2m 18s): Sure. The, the reply, the response was almost immediate too. It was, I expected everybody to be on board, but not to the fashion that it was, it was every, it was infectious almost. Dennis Barela (2m 29s): Right. And so we're getting ready to start our summer study sessions and, you know, to try to follow up what we did the Springs and it'd be difficult. But I think after brainstorming for a month, I think we got some pretty good ideas of what we'll want to do for the, for the summer. But before we do that, I think we want to try something new and for the summer, and I think this will be directed towards, towards Ken. Dennis Barela (3m 3s): Thanks. Yeah. And so we're going to, we're going to call it Frank's jeopardy. We cut this little thing from a PAC 12 umpire about football jeopardy, and I think we're gonna give it a try and test Ken's football knowledge. Ken Adent (3m 19s): Great. Put me on the spot in front of everybody. Yeah. Feel free. I guess, football, football, jeopardy. And you can see, you don't have to be brilliant to be in a football official. Dennis Barela (3m 28s): So there's quite a few categories just like, just like jeopardy on TV, but let's give this a try and see what, what kind of answers can, can go ahead, Alex. Yeah. 3 (3m 40s): Okay. Dennis Barela (3m 44s): So, so the categories are, you definitely need to know these official business cross town trivia. So I'll take official business for 600 official business for 600. Well, we don't have a 600, it goes from 100, 200, 300, 400, 500. Oh, okay. About double jeopardy. Okay. Just about, there might be a double jeopardy in their summer. Dennis Barela (4m 15s): We haven't really looked at these, but you know, I don't know the rules. I'm just going for it here. So Ken Adent (4m 22s): Let's see.... Support this podcast

Airborne Receiver  Dennis Barela (4s): Alright, so today's Tuesday, and this is the first of the summer study sessions. We're doing something a little bit different this year, where, where we have get it right. That has volunteered to bring us 10 weeks of free training on high school rules and directed at, at our mechanics here in New Mexico. And like I said, my name is Dennis Barela. I'm official here in New Mexico, out of Albuquerque. Dennis Barela (37s): And I had met Barb or known last year at the front range camp out of Colorado. And he presented this software up there to the high school officials in the football camp in, and I just thought it was a great way to learn high school rules without having to get on the field and in front of players. And so here's the Bible for Bob. Dennis Barela (1m 11s): He started fishing in 2001 back. Judge had done many district and state champion ship games. He's been an instructor. He found get it right in 2012, the software's in 50 different States and 15 different countries. He's a game changer through an ASO and he is partner with Mike para and the battlefield cabal field since 2016. He also now recently a partner with the New Mexico athletics association and the MOA. Dennis Barela (1m 48s): And he's bringing us a lot of free training this summer. So what's that Bob? It's all yours. Bob Arnone (1m 57s): Okay. Thank you. I guess now need to be able to share my screen. Dennis Barela (2m 10s): Let me stop sharing. 0 (2m 13s): Okay. Dennis Barela (2m 16s): I need to pull this forward. We can see. Bob Arnone (2m 22s): All right. Tonight, we get to talk a little bit about the airborne receiver. This is an extension of the video that the Dennis in the crew published during their break, but I just need to step through a couple of things here, cause we're going to take it another couple of levels deeper than what that video had. Bob Arnone (2m 54s): So of course, by the Federation a catch, this is a player establishing possession of a light ball in flight, and then first contacting the ground inbounds while maintaining possession of the ball. So we have this animation here. We'll drop this down. Dennis Barela (3m 18s): Hey Bob, it's just showing one screen, a blank screen with Get it right on the bottom. Bob Arnone (3m 25s): Okay. Let me try to get into the, there you go. Okay. I've got the animation now. Good? Yep. Okay. So, so now we've got the animation laid up here. We'll, we'll looking at this at about field level. We're going to do a play through on this just so you can see it from start to finish as to what we need to look for, where it goes up, comes down. So the mechanics on something like this, especially in New Mexico, where you're doing four, man, you have to be pretty tough because of what you really need to watch for. Bob Arnone (4m 3s): I is making sure number one, he even has possession of the ball. And then if he does where's that first foot hit and right here, you can see it that first foot isn't bounce in that second foot very quickly lands out of bounds. So for me, and that becomes pretty tricky to catch. You may need the up higher to help you on that. But depending on how far down field that wing official can get that, that one might be a little bit of a trick for y'all on a comparison, what you're going to see on the right side. Bob Arnone (4m 41s): And I'll run this through a place through going to see that the fender pushed that received roundabouts while he's in the air. There's nothing illegal about that. As long as that contact is legal, A receiver has possession of the ball. The defender has taken a look at him. He shoves him while you're still in midair. So his first contact is on the sideline. So that makes that an incomplete pass for some of you veteran officials out there. Bob Arnone (5m 15s): I think it was maybe four or five years ago that the rule used to be in high school.... Abram Anaya, Mountain West Conference Center Judge, Film Evaluation Dana Pappas (1m 5s): I want to welcome you to our second coach's and officials webinar for the sport of football for our spring season. As we were talking about before we started recording, this is a great way for us to stay connected with sports when there are none, which is sad, but this has been a great way for all of us to kind of stay connected with officiating and with sports and interscholastic athletics as a whole. The purpose of today's webinar is actually to talk a little bit about our Film process or evaluation process for then New Mexico activities and New Mexico officials association. Dana Pappas (1m 39s): And with us today, we have one of our very trustee, a very relied upon evaluators. Abraham is from Santa Fe and he's a former high school official who works division one football now. And he's been a great asset to us as a, as an off field high school official with in regard to Evaluation. Uh, he is very fast at getting them done. So when I need something done quickly, because of that matter, I'm able to send them to him. Dana Pappas (2m 9s): And I usually get a response back same day. So it's been great having Abraham on our staff. I'm just going to give a very quick rundown about our Film process with the enemy and how that happens. And then Abram's going to do more of a deep dive into what he's looking for when he receives the Film. So one of the questions I get rather frequently from coaches is when we send in our clips, what happens, um, I think that there's a perception that they go into a black hole, never to be found again. Dana Pappas (2m 40s): And that is not the case. When we receive clips from coaches, either through huddle or other means, uh, we do send them to one of our evaluators to take a look at. Sometimes it's just clips. Sometimes it might be an entire game and the coaches will put some times comments within the context of huddle. They'll send an email that we include to our evaluator. We do have three individuals who we heavily rely upon for Film Evaluation Abraham is one of them, and then we have two other officials. Dana Pappas (3m 11s): One is a retired NCAA football and high school official. And then we have an NFL official who actually helps us as well. So you've got three very capable people who do that. They took take a look at it and then they send us a commentary and it'll talk about mechanics issues, rules, issues, anything that they saw that could be a concern at the same time. If a coach sends in what they feel is an incorrect call, the evaluator will take a look and explain to them why it either was or wasn't. Dana Pappas (3m 44s): So we do look at a lot of that. We never look at officials judgment. We're only looking at mechanics and rules misapplications if that's the case. So once we get that, that commentary back from the evaluator, we take it and send it to them that was involved on the game, as well as that a signer. So that way the assigner can use it for training Evaluation as well as to help make determinations with regard for close season assignments. So there is a lot involved with, with that Film in addition, we take that commentary and send it to the athletic director. Dana Pappas (4m 22s): Sure, cool. That sent him the clip. If we have the coach's email address, we'll actually send it to that coach directly as well. A lot of times we don't get it with the huddles, a clip, so we'll just send it into the AB and the ADSL to pass that information onto the head coach. So that's really what happens from our standpoint, just so you understand the process. So at this time I'd like to turn it over to Abraham because he can tell you what he's looking for and what our other evaluators are kind of looking at as they go through the process. So Abraham, thank you for taking time out of your afternoon and, uh, I'll turn it over completely to you. Dana Pappas (4m 58s): If Support this podcast

She usually likes to say a few words and then I'll introduce you. So Dana, Dana Pappas (1m 28s): Hey, Dean long time. No, see, how are you? Great. How are you doing? I'm doing well. Good. Well, thank you so much for spending a Wednesday night with us and giving, giving you have yourself and your time to our football officials here in New Mexico. Um, as Ken and Dennis mentioned, we're definitely going out on a high note at the end of these, the spring webinars, and, uh, it's great to have you on, and you're somebody I've always thought very highly of, and I'm, I'm excited to have you with our New Mexico family. Dana Pappas (1m 58s): So it's great seeing you again and thank you so much for your time this evening. Dean Blandino (2m 3s): No, thank you. And then, like I said, I'm honored to be a part of this. Like You've had some great speakers and, uh, and it's just, I'm excited to, uh, to just share some, share some stuff about Instant Replay and hear your questions and just, and just have a conversation. Dana Pappas (2m 19s): I appreciate it. Thank you, my friend. I'll turn it over to our, uh, our football folks. Ken Adent (2m 24s): Great. Thank you, Dana. I appreciate it. Um, I just noticed we have mr. Mike Contreras that you had of the ARMAC Mike, would you like to say hello? Do a Dean before he gets started. Mike Contrezas (2m 36s): Good evening. Dean how are you? Dean Blandino (2m 38s): I'm good, Mike, how are you? Mike Contrezas (2m 39s): I'm doing well. Thank you. I'm doing well. I'm, I've been enjoyed some of your, um, your past presentations and I'm really excited to, to hear what you have to say tonight to the, to the group here. Uh, I was going to save it for a question, but what I'll I'll ask that you, hopefully you will address, and that is how can they use Replay to improve their officiating on the field. And by that, I mean, and how they understand the Replay process and at the high school level, obviously we don't have it, how they can understand Replay what Replay is looking for and then how they can turn that around and improve their officiating on the field. Dean Blandino (3m 22s): Yeah, I'd say it's a good question. And we talked To How would you officials and NFL officials quite a bit about that it's, you know, knowing the Replay process, how does that make you a better on film official? And I think when, when Replay was first implemented, um, there was a, there was a clear separation and, and it was the on-field officials did what they do, Replay did what they do. And there really wasn't a lot of collaboration and it was almost, I think initially there was some, there was some kind of hesitancy on the, on the part of the game officials, uh, you know, in terms of... Top 10 Commissioner's Questions  Dennis Barela (0s): Alright, great. Ken Adent (1m 6s): Thank you for joining. We've got, uh, Dana Pappas and Nate, Acosta joining us this evening and talking about, uh, uh, what's happening in high school sports in the state of New Mexico. Um, welcome. Dana and Nate. Thanks for Dana. Hey, thanks for having us. Dana Pappas (1m 22s): Thank you so much. Good to be on another webinar with you guys. Ken Adent (1m 26s): Cool. Uh, it's been a pretty interesting spring with, you know, the COVID-19 and webinars and all that. Um, you guys know the story about Dennis and I just being born and decided to get things started, and it was kind of cool that, uh, this thing kind of exploded from, uh, you know, just a couple of guys talk and football, two multiple sports. You want to touch base on what your guys' opinion and how that's, how it began with the statewide. Dana Pappas (1m 60s): Sure, absolutely. So, as you mentioned, the two of you kind of started this off, and then I, I don't know if your intention, when you were getting into it was for it to become what it is, and that is now seven different sports that we've got webinars in. Um, for our state, it's received national attention now and received the local press and really it's just exploded. And the two of you started it out of, out of boredom as you stated, but it really turned into something that Nate and I realized very quickly, we needed get on board and start providing something for our Officials during this, uh, will in sports. Dana Pappas (2m 38s): So, um, you know, Hector Martinez and baseball, he was right after the football ones. And then Nate was like, we better start doing something for basketball. So we started basketball and then I've just been trying to get people on board in some of our other sports. And now we also have had softball. We've had wrestling, we have first soccer won tonight and our first volleyball next week. So it's been something that's grown rather quickly. Um, and rather unexpectedly it's been great to see how many people in the state have participated in the webinar's and then, and also people from around the country who have, and then as well. Dana Pappas (3m 19s): So we've kind of expanded The and I'm always family outside of our borders. And, and it's really just been a, kind of a fun ride and it kind of happened very quick. We, but it's been a lot of fun and a lot of learning and education and laughter and, and, uh, all of the stuff that we love about officiating kind of contained seminars. Nate Acosta (3m 40s): Yeah. You know, to, to kind of follow up on what Dana is talking about. Um, this pandemic song almost been a blessing for our Officials actually, um, you know, this is a time that, um, well with the help of YouTube, but this has been time that our Officials has probably gotten the most training that we've ever given them, you know, and that's obviously with the help of, you know, the various Officials and different sports and, and of course, you know, with the content tax it Dana has and why. Yeah. Nate Acosta (4m 10s): And, um, the relationship she's, she's built, um, it's given us the ability to bring in some of these people and, and okay. Of course, you know, um, it helps that, uh, you know, we have individuals like yourself that want to, you know, kind of facilitate these things that, that really take a lot off of mine and Dana's plate so that, um, you know, because, you know, we don't know every sport, um, you know, we know some basics, but really, you know, you guys are the ones that know what your sport or, and, and the fact that you can facilitate this is, is, is very helpful for us. Ken Adent (4m 47s): That's so cool to hear here. I know we did not expect it, but we embraced it. Let me tell him. And we were really that other sports got involved. Um, Nate have you, Dennis and I were talking, is it the newer Officials? Is it the middle... Support this podcast
