A biotech company in the United States made headlines last month by revealing photos of genetically modified gray wolves, calling them “dire wolves,” a species that hasn't existed for more than 10,000 years. Colossal Biosciences edited 14 genes among millions of base pairs in gray wolf DNA to arrive at the pups that were shown, leaving millions of genetic differences between these wolves and real dire wolves. This hasn't stopped some observers from asserting to the public that “de-extinction” is real. But it's not, says podcast guest Dieter Hochuli, a professor at the Integrative Ecology Lab at the University of Sydney. Hochuli explains why ecologists like him say de-extinction isn't just a misleading term, but a dangerous one that promotes false hope and perverse incentives at the expense of existing conservation efforts that are proven to work. "The problem with the word de-extinction for many ecologists is that we see extinction [as] being an irreversible event that has finality about it, a bit like death. The idea that you can reverse those sorts of things is anathema, I think, biologically, but also philosophically and ethically," Hochuli says. In their 4th straight crushing loss to the Chiefs in the Playoffs, what was the top reason Josh Allen's Bills experienced that painful feeling again: Mahomes magic or the refs? Plus, the Ravens fans return the favor to Bills fans over Dalton Kincaid's drop. After crushing the Cinderella supported Commanders, will Jalen Hurts finally get respect from some on this show? Frankie Luvu made us all laugh. And the tributes to DJ Unk's great impact. It's a HUGE lineup on this Championship Sunday recap show, with Andrew, with Vince Saiz, Josh B, JXSports, JR, Tate, Mentru Nagbe, Brando, Ralph Mentor, Betting Monster, Larry, Eric and Brandon Jones!

Could the millennial left's political failures be traced back to a misalignment with historical Marxist frameworks? Join us on VarmVlog as we unpack this and more in an eye-opening conversation with Alex Hochuli, author of Omelets with Eggshells: On the Failure of the Millennial Left and co-host of Aufbungabunga Podcast. We dive into the heart of millennial left politics, pulling apart the complexity of its evolution and examining the personal experiences and organizational challenges faced by key figures and societies. From the importance of understanding local contexts to the critical need for clear demands and structured organization, this episode is packed with insights for anyone wondering where the millennial left went wrong. The rise and fall of leftist movements like Podemos and the institutionalization of BLM and Me Too are central to our discussion. We'll contrast the short-term gains and long-term struggles of these movements, and how they intersect with the entrenched political systems in Anglophone countries. We touch on the nuanced role of media and social media in shaping these movements, and the constraints that have stifled their potential within the American political landscape. This episode also delves into the speculative nature of political investments and the discomfort with radical change that has plagued recent leftist efforts. In reflecting on the broader political landscape, we explore the crisis of contemporary political progress and the decline in labor organization. Alex O'Chilly shares his thoughts on the generational gaps within the left and how historical amnesia affects current movements. From the fragmentation of elite-driven politics to the nostalgia for mid-20th century frameworks, we question the left's readiness to embrace uncertainty and ambition. Tune in to understand why the left needs to move beyond nostalgia and face the unique challenges of the 21st century head-on. Support the showCrew:Host: C. Lula da Silva's return to office in Brazil marks a critical attempt to undo the conservative rollback of his party's previous progressive reforms. Under Michel Temer and Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil saw an erosion of social programs, environmental protections, and Indigenous rights that the Workers' Party (PT) had championed in the 2000s. Lula's reinstatement of programs like *Bolsa Família*, designed to address food insecurity for over 33 million Brazilians, and his commitment to halting environmental destruction in the Amazon are core components of his platform. However, the Brazil Lula governs today is far different than the one he left in 2010. The ideological landscape, both domestically and globally, has shifted dramatically. After Dilma Rousseff's ouster, Brazil became more polarized, with Bolsonaro's right-wing populism galvanizing large swaths of the electorate through nationalist and anti-left rhetoric. This new political environment reflects broader global trends: a backlash against what is often derisively called "wokeness" or "globalism." Right-wing populists, sovereigntists, and national-conservatives have risen in opposition to the neoliberal policies of the past few decades, creating a more fractured political order. Our guest today, Alex, argues that this shift mirrors larger geopolitical tensions that he terms the "new Cold War." In an upcoming essay, he draws upon thinkers like Frederic Jameson and Slavoj Žižek to examine how these cultural and ideological battles are unfolding. As Alex writes: "A succession of 'cultural logics' have been identified since Frederic Jameson first wrote about postmodernism as the logic of late capitalism in 1984. In 1997, Slavoj Žižek discoursed about multiculturalism as the cultural logic of multinational capitalism. And if you were so inclined, you could write essays arguing that the past decade has seen wokeness emerge as the cultural logic of late neoliberalism." This notion of "wokeness" — encompassing progressive values, neoliberal economics, and the curtailment of freedoms by corporate and political interests — serves as the ideological backdrop for much of today's political polarization. Alex posits that unlike the original Cold War, which was a genuine ideological clash between capitalism and socialism, this "new Cold War" is less about systems of governance and more about capitalist competition dressed in thin ideological coatings. Whether framed as "authoritarianism versus democracy" or "stability versus chaos," the deeper struggle appears to be between nationalist forces that reject the perceived excesses of globalization and neoliberalism, and a fragmented liberal order grappling with its own contradictions. In Brazil, Lula faces these challenges head-on. His efforts to restore progressive policies and repair the damage done by Bolsonaro are emblematic of a broader struggle against right-wing populism and anti-globalist sentiment. How Lula navigates this new political terrain will be a crucial test of whether left-wing governance can effectively counter the growing influence of right-populism and restore faith in a more egalitarian, internationalist approach to governance. We discuss Lula da Silva's return to office in Brazil as part of a broader global context where progressive reforms face significant pushback and political landscapes have shifted. Predigt vom 12.03.23
… Von Stephan Wolting

In 1991, the Soviet Union dissolved in chaos ending the twentieth century's first self-proclaimed worker's state. For many in the West, the fact that the USSR collapsed under its own internal contradictions was evidence of the superiority of the liberal capitalist system over any potential rivals. In the heady years that followed, Francis Fukuyama declared that the fall of communism signaled “the end of history as such: that is, the end point of mankind's ideological evolution and the universalization of Western liberal democracy as the final form of human government.” Viewed from 2021, such pontifications appear to be hubris of the highest order. Beginning with the 2008 economic crisis, through Brexit, Trump and now COVID, talk of the end of history has ended as the liberal democratic consensus evaporates. But what does the end of the end of history mean for the future? Alex Hochuli is a Brazil based researcher and writer. For this episode of SPS, Sophia and Pamela take up Dave Chappelle's latest Netflix special, "The Closer," and the blowback following its release. For the main segment, Sophia catches up with the makers behind the Aufhebunga Bunga pod, Alex Hochuli and George Hoare, to discuss their new book, The End of the End of History: Politics in the Twenty-First Century. She asks about their characterization of "anti-politics," how they understood the Trump & Brexit moment, and the importance of Hegel for the Left today. Hochuli is a writer and translator living in Sao Paolo, Brazil, and Hoare is a researcher and political consultant in London. Emma hosts writer Alex Hochuli, co-host of the Aufhebunga Bunga podcast, to discuss his recent book The End of the End of History: Politics in the Twenty-First Century that he co-authored with George Hoare and Phillip Cunliffe, taking on the establishment and breakdown of complete neoliberal hegemony over the last three decades. Alex and Emma situate our current moment at the end of decades of neoliberal consensus that have failed to give us the tools to comprehend actual contestation over what society should look like. Jumping back to the ‘90s and George H.W. Bush, they explore the birth of the neoliberal world order in the shadow of the end of the Cold War, built on complete hegemony in the West, and complete submission to hegemony for the rest. They take on this view of neoliberal politics and globalization as a “force of nature,” rather than policy choices, with the few forms of counterculture focused on carving out their own spaces in society rather than genuine social change. Hochuli then looks at the 2008 financial crisis as the breaking point of a building lack of confidence and disillusionment of neoliberalism and capitalism, and the response of Occupy as an important movement of the left from taking on a minoritarian approach to speaking for and with the 99%. However, the return of politics came without the tools to understand and analyze our moment as it built towards the victories of Trump and Brexit (among other right populist wins), resulting in a complete breakdown of the neoliberal media and elites, focusing on conspiracy theories about Russia rather than actually dealing with the rejection of neoliberal hegemony. Next, they touch on cultures of anti-politics (“oh they're all corrupt”) and how the neoliberal hegemony and supposed “end of history” gave political disgruntlement no place to go, before Alex dives into the case study of Brazil over the last decade or so, with their 2013 uprisings for social policies actively being detached from party politics, and giving rise to a complete distrust of democracy and politics in favor of judicial and technocratic rule, ultimately seeing the election of Bolsonaro. He and Emma jump from this back to the US and our handling of COVID, looking at Biden's presidency as a form of technopopulism, giving Trump's agenda a professional sheen while actual policy discussion is drowned out by culture war. Emma also takes on Manchin's hypocritical “entitlement society” objections, as well as Bernie's pitch-perfect response. And in the Fun Half: Brandon runs through his official review of the “comedy” (term used loosely) of cultural miscommunication that is CBS's “the United States of Al,” and he, Emma, Matt, and Matt discuss the passing of the “spectre of dickishness” from AZ Senator to AZ Senator as Sinema finally responds to questioning by only correcting her designation as a “Congresswoman.” Antoine from LA calls in about the difficulties of discussing leftism with a close victim of the Khmer Rouge, Yang and Tucker bond over their exploit-hate relationship with the immigrant workforces, and Zach from Missouri calls in regarding his unsuccessful attempts at converting his anti-vax mother. They also discuss Ben Shapiro, from his “cultural” race science to his inconsistent bowel policies, Hamish from Tahoe takes on Emma “Veganland” (not a vegan) and her vegan-superiority-complex, plus, your calls and IMs! We live in strange times. Politics around the world seem to be transforming into something new and often frightening. But this process has a history. In 1989, the bi-polar certainties of the Cold War gave way to a neo-liberal consensus, what Francis Fukuyama termed “the End of History”. Yet with BREXIT and Trump in 2016, the End of History seemed to be coming to an end itself. The current COVID crisis has only accelerated this process. To make sense of this Gramscian interregnum and its great variety of morbid symptoms, Alex Hochuli, George Hoare, and Philip Cunliffe started the Aufhebunga Bunga podcast in April 2017. Billing itself as the “global political podcast at the end of the end of history”, the podcast offers theoretically informed and often provocative analysis and commentary. The podcast has led to a book, The End of the End of History: Politics in the Twenty-First Century, out with Zero Books in 2021. In our discussion, these three scholars lay out their defense of the concept of the End of History, discuss post-politics and anti-politics, and explain how politics are back. They also diagnose the pandemic of Neoliberal Order Breakdown Syndrome and explain which demographic groups are most susceptible to NOBS. Drawing from the recent history of the USA and UK, as well as Italy and Brazil, Hochuli, Hoare, and Cunliffe offer an analysis of our world and make some bleak predictions for what is to come in terms of future ideological formations. Alex Hochuli is a writer and translator living in Sao Paolo, Brazil, George Hoare is a political consultant in London, and Philip Cunliffe is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Kent. Michael G. Vann is a professor of world history at California State University, Sacramento. A specialist in imperialism and the Cold War in Southeast Asia, he is the author of The Great Hanoi Rat Hunt: Empires, Disease, and Modernity in French Colonial Vietnam (Oxford University Press, 2018).
This flashback episode takes us back to episode 60 where we chat with Dieter Hochuli, an invertebrate biologist and urban ecologist from the University of Sydney who studies how nature survives in towns and cities. His research investigates the ecological, economical and psychological benefits of nature in cities, and how our modern way of life affects the plants and animals around us. In an interview with In Situ Science Dieter chats with us about how connecting with nature is being shown to have significant impacts on people’s health and well being, and that this connection can still happen even when you live in a big city. We also chat about the creative side of science and science communication, and how taking ourselves a little less seriously can be a great technique for approaching science and scientific careers. Joining us this week to talk about the election of far right Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil is Alex Hochuli, who lives in São Paulo and hosts the Aufhebungabunga podcast. We discuss the ruling class conspiracy that led to the fall of both Lula and Dilma of the Worker's Party (PT) and the failures of the neoliberal centrists in containing the crisis that they, themselves, created. Finally, we develop "neoliberal authoritarianism" as the neo-fascism of the 21st century. We often think of cities as concrete jungles, dominated by humans and their structures, but a surprising number of animals and plants share our cities with us. Some even thrive, seemingly better off here than in their natural habitats. With 80 percent of humans predicted to live in urban areas by the year 2050, it is vital that we learn how urban ecosystems can persist and flourish. Dieter will discuss ways in which nature adapts to city life, how we can help to conserve it, and why living alongside nature is better for us all.

In Sankt Gallen we had a talk with none other than Jost Hochuli, the legendary Swiss graphic designer and typographer. He is an expert in book design and also well known for his writing. In his long and exceptional career he got the opportunity to study and work with a lot of design legends, such as Adrian Frutiger. We want to know all about it! He explains how he sees book design as a ‘Gesammt Kunstwerk’ and what he thinks about badly designed books. He shares his remarkable career with us, including how he cofounded the VGS, the Sankt Gallen publishing house. And how he (being almost 80 years old) only recently got the opportunity to actually teach in his own field. Recorded at Tÿpo St.Gallen 2011, Switzerland.
