On the morning of May 5th, 1979, four residents of Estevan, Saskatchewan boarded a small Cessna bound for Boise, Idaho on what was supposed to be a day trip. By that afternoon, the plane was down in a remote canyon in the Salmon River Mountains, two of the four passengers were dead, and two badly injured survivors were completely alone. No gear. Los Hermanos Gutiérrez aparecieron como una dupla misteriosa de hombres que apareció en la lejanía del desierto pospandémico, como pistoleros en una película del oeste. Estevan y Alejandro, de origen ecuatoriano y crianza suiza, traían consigo una sensibilidad necesaria para una época revoltosa y atribulada. No fue sino hasta que su cuarto álbum 'Hijos del Sol' capturara la atención de figuras importantes del rock latinoamericano como Robi Draco Rosa que yo llegué a los Hermanos Gutiérrez. Y al parecer lo mismo sucedió con Dan Auerbach, el famoso guitarrista, compositor y cantante de los Black Keys. Auerbach, cuyo trabajo como productor incluye álbumes de Lana Del Rey y Cage The Elephant, quedó cautivado con esta sensibilidad que mezcla la bohemia de Julio Jaramillo, la sensibilidad de la salsa y la cinematografía de Ennio Moriccone y Alejandro González Iñárritu. Auerbach comenzó a trabajar con Hermanos Gutiérrez en su álbum 'El Bueno Y El Malo', de 2022. Dr. Estevan Rael-Gálvez is the executive director of Native Bound Unbound: Archive of Indigenous Slavery, an initiative funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, leading a global team in the goal to document Indigenous/Native slavery across the Western Hemisphere. Trained as an anthropologist, historian, and Indigenous slavery scholar, Dr. Rael-Gálvez has served as the former Senior Vice President of Historic Sites at the National Trust for Historic Preservation, executive director of the National Hispanic Cultural Center, and as the state historian of New Mexico. A native son of New Mexico, Estevan was raised on a farm and ranch stewarded by his family for multiple generations. He received his BA in English Literature and Ethnic Studies from the University of California, Berkeley, and his MA and Ph.D. in American Cultures from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where he completed an award-winning doctoral dissertation, the basis of a current book project.

Estevan was caught in a life of darkness bound by crime and addiction.  His choices led to liver failure and a critical turning point. In his surrender, Estevan gave his life to Jesus and God gave him a new liver and a renewed mind. Today, we hear from Estevan's wife, Lisa.   Lisa opens up about her childhood, her marriage to Estevan, and the painful season of watching her husband's health decline. Through every trial, Estevan and Lisa have walked with the Lord side by side for 16 years.

A life once filled in gang life and addiction brought years of turmoil and brokenness. Darkness led to prison sentences, each one a step further from peace. At his lowest point, liver failure threatened to bring everything to an end. A transplant became the physical salvation but something even greater happened. Welcome back to Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions, this week on the show, we're joined by three guests—though, not all at once.  In the first half of the show: Mark “Frosty” McNeill of dublab and the LA Phil to discuss a new compilation he helped produce, Even the Forest Hums: Ukrainian Sonic Archives 1971​-​1996; in the second-half of the show, Estevan and Alejandro Gutierrez, better known as Hermanos Gutiérrez just us to discuss their latest album of spacey guitar instrumentals, Sonido Cosmico. Assembled by Light in the Attic Records in partnership with the Kyiv-based archival label, Shukai, Even the Forest Hums offers music rarely heard outside of its homeland—a genre diverse compilation of Ukrainian music recorded under the USSR's reign and in the aftermath of its collapse, from post-punk to folk, from jazz rock to early electronic music, from downtempo hip-hop to oddball pop.  “Music has always pulled Ukrainians out of the abyss,” writes Vitalii “Bard” Bardetskyi in the liner notes. “When there is no hope for the future, there is still music. At such moments, the whole nation resonates under a groove. Music, breaking through the concrete of various colonial systems, is an incredible, often illogical, way to preserve dignity.” Mark “Frosty” McNeill takes us behind the scenes. Brothers Estevan and Alejandro Gutiérrez grew up in two words, splitting time between their father's native Switzerland and Ecuador, where their mother's family hailed from. On past records, they've evoked the imaginal expanses of Spaghetti Westerns through a pan Latin/surf/psychedelic sound for guitar and lap steel.  Their latest is called Sonido Cósmico. Joined by producer Dan Auerbach, they flesh the surroundings out even more this go-round, dialing in a song that's as suited for the desert expanses of Mars or the moon as much as any Sergio Leone film.  Estevan and Alejandro joined us to discuss setting their sights on the stars, channeling feminine energy via their abuela, and the intent that fueled committing their earliest musical efforts to vinyl. Hermanos Gutiérrez may be an instrumental guitar band, but they have zero interest in shredding. Instead the Swiss-Ecuadorian brothers, Estevan and Alejandro Gutiérrez, take a minimalist approach to playing. They create hypnotic, sweeping compositions inspired by classical Latin guitar and film scores from old Spaghetti Westerns. In 2022, after releasing three albums independently, Hermanos Gutiérrez signed to Easy Eye Sound, a label owned and operated by Dan Auerbach, guitarist and vocalist of The Black Keys. Last October they released the album, El Bueno Y El Malo to critical acclaim. The album features the song “Tres Hermanos,” where Auerbach joins the brothers on guitar. Today we'll hear Estevan and Alejandro play that song, along with a couple other songs live from Auerbach's studio in Nashville, TN. Justin Richmond also talks to Hermanos Gutiérrez about how their brotherly spats sometimes fuel their playing. Then they recall a recent performance in Mexico City where they played during a volcanic eruption. And how Dan Auerbach knew he wanted to meet with Hermanos Gutiérrez after seeing them play for just 15 seconds.
