In this episode of Healthy Waves, host Sana speaks with Clara Schroeder, ecotherapist, resilience trainer, and author of the upcoming book Re-Nature. Clara shares her journey of healing after a traumatic brain injury and how nature became her greatest teacher. Together, they explore how reconnecting with the natural world fosters emotional balance, builds resilience, and offers accessible practices—even for city dwellers with limited green space. From the power of visualization and sensory rituals to the importance of community climate conversations, this episode invites you to rediscover your place in the larger web of life. About the Guest : Clara Schroeder holds a master's degree in psychology from Columbia University and certifications in ecotherapy and resilience training. She has worked with leaders, first responders, and global communities at the intersection of mental health and climate well-being. Her upcoming book Re-Nature blends science, storytelling, and practical tools to help individuals and communities thrive by reconnecting with the earth. Key Takeaways : Resilience is not about force but about flow, regeneration, and adaptability—just like nature. Simple daily practices, such as noticing five things with your senses or creating a “good morning ritual,” reconnect us with nature even in urban settings. Guided visualization can shift our mood and regulate the nervous system, offering a sense of belonging to the natural world. Community support, including spaces like climate cafés, plays a crucial role in processing climate grief and building collective resilience. Reconnecting with nature is not a privilege reserved for those in the wilderness—small, mindful acts of awareness bring us closer to our environment and ourselves. Schroeder, Carina; Golab, Shahrzad; Ziegler, Meral www.deutschlandfunkkultur.de, Das Podcastmagazin
✦ The band DEVO has been holding up a funhouse mirror to America for nearly fifty years. They broke out of Akron, Ohio, in the late '70s with a sound that was part punk, part art experiment, and all warning signs. Their concept of 'de-evolution'—that instead of progressing, society was actually regressing—felt satirical back then. But looking around today, it feels eerily predictive. As we face cuts to public radio funding and political attacks on the arts, DEVO's vision of a culture slipping backward suddenly feels less like a metaphor and more like the nightly news. When the band was in town for Shaky Knees on Sunday, City Lights Collective co-host Kim Drobes caught up with founding members Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale to discuss the stakes for artists today, how this moment connects to their work, and what survival—and maybe even resistance—looks like in 2025. ✦ Two of Oakland Cemetery's beloved programs are coming together for a full day of music and community. WABE arts reporter Summer Evans has more on the makeup/mashup they're calling Sunday in the Park featuring Tunes from the Tombs. ✦ As summer winds down and Atlanta weather moves from merely "tolerable" and increasingly towards "pleasant," you might be compelled to engage in some outdoor festivities, and you're in luck because the East Atlanta Strut is this Saturday! City Lights Collective Engineer Matt McWilliams has more on how this neighborhood likes to let loose, throw down, and let its freak flag fly. ✦ We love visiting with our artistic community "In Their Own Words." This is where they tell us who they are, what they do, what they love, and a few things you might not see coming. What things? Who knows, there's only one way to find out. Today, we shone a light on Atlanta artist Cyrus Nelson and Atlanta comedian Dante Quitman. ✦ You can see how dancers become one with nature in the new Flux Project film "Braiding Time, Memory and Water." Created by Core Dance artistic director Sue Schroeder, the film was a collaboration with conceptual artist Jonathon Keats and composer Felipe Pérez Santiago. The dances took place along the Chattahoochee River, and the film will be screened on Core Dance's storefront each evening through October 12. WABE arts reporter Summer Evans recently spoke with Schroeder about the project. ✦ Atlanta has a rich and lasting tradition of amazing poetry open mics. In venues, grottos, parks, and cafes all over the city, people speak their loudest truths, deepest hurts, and immeasurable joys to finger-snapping audiences. Some poetry open mics come and go, and some stick and stay. The Thursday night open mic at Urban Grind is the latter. Every Thursday night for the last nineteen years, people have taken the floor and taken the invitation to speak, even if their voices tremble. City Light's Collective Co-Host Jon Goode sat down with the Owner of Urban Grind, Cassandra Ingram, and longtime host B Rock to discuss the legacy and future of the iconic event. In 1855, an American named John Swanson Jacobs walked into the offices of the Empire newspaper in Sydney, Australia. The conversation that ensued between the editors and Jacobs, a fugitive slave, opened a path for both Jacobs and the Empire, a path for the newspaper to publish his story. Two weeks later, Jacobs brought them a manuscript titled The United States Governed by 600,000 Despots. This was not a typical slave narrative, and they published it.rnrnIn 2016, in the midst of other research, historian Jonathan D.S. Schroeder came across Jacobs' autobiography, which had been all but lost to time. An extraordinary work, more sociopolitical critique than life story, Despots offers a first hand account of how the enslaved truly viewed the institution of slavery, unmediated by white editors and writers as so many other slave narratives of the time were.rnrnIn celebration of the 90th Anisfield Wolf Book Awards and Cleveland Book Fest, Schroeder will discuss Jacobs' narrative and Schroeder's own scholarship with author, historian, and 2021 Anisfield Wolf Book Award winner Vincent Brown.

I haven't done a how much I love New York City episode in a couple weeks, so the indie smash, OR SOMETHING (2024), and the film's director, Jeffrey Scotti Schroeder, makes for the absolute perfect guest. Why is the film being extended at Quad Cinemas? What does it say for indie filmmakers that the Substack crowd got so behind this film? Is it repeatable? Let's hope so. And if you haven't seen it at the time this airs, go see it through September 4th. Or later, if we keep talking about it.In this episode, Jeffrey and I talk about:The word of mouth success of OR SOMETHING (2024), whose theatrical run was extended through September 4th;His origin story — a true OG throwback to William Morris mailrooms; What makes a great agent? What to expect when you watch OR SOMETHING;How he wound up attached to the film, written by comedy stars Kareem Rahma and Mary Neely; What the six day, ultra-low filmmaking process was like and how filmmakers get the knowledge of avoiding dudes in golf carts in New York City; How the film blew up on blogs + NYC social media and whether it's repeatable in cities with a clear sense of place (warning: some Los Angeles indie film bashing in this answer);Whether there's infrastructure to make more of these films in NYC; How much it matters making investors whole to make your next film;Whether local government could get behind a gritty NYC film like this; What's next for him — it involves surfing and Rio. Jeffrey's Indie Film Highlight: THE SWEET EAST (2023) dir. Sean Price Williams Memorable Quotes:“The good agents would have a really hard and fast rule that they'd return everybody's call at least the same day.”“If you like your classic New York City walk and talk film and if you don't mind two people talking the entire movie….then you'll like it. If you don't like that type of movie, you're not gonna like this film.”“Hey, do you wanna do this ultra low budget feature? They were, what's the rate? And I told them…like..nothing.”“Whereas New York people are just mind your fucking business on both ends, like we're filming. And then we're in their space, excuse me, can you, they're like, mind your business. It's New York City.”“If you're leading with the idea of profitability, it might not come to fruition.”“Word of mouth is definitely the only way because we have a $0 marketing budget.”Links:Follow Jeffrey On InstagramFollow OR SOMETHING On InstagramSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/first-time-go/exclusive-content

Our two hosts sit down for a stimulating (yes, intended) conversation with Kwesi Kwofie from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada, who gets down and dirty about needle nerve contact and nerve injury. Where exactly should we put the needle when performing a supraclavicular brachial plexus block? Or...is the supraclav dead?!! Why is periplexus preferred over intraplexus when doing interscalene brachial plexus blocks? Oh, and Kwesi might just win the joke contest. But wait, not to outdone, we follow up with Kristopher Schroeder from the University of Wisconsin, who educates us about raaaaaanch dressing, cheese curds, and gets us thinking about artificial intelligence and anesthesiology--is it ok to use generative AI to write a reference letter for a colleague? What is 'sentiment analysis' and do we have to read the whole paper anymore? Can AI help in decision-making surrounding transfusion practices? For all this and much much more, tune in to this fascinating episode. Join us each month for another sassy conversation about anesthesiology, emergency medicine, critical care, POCUS, pain medicine, ultrasound guided nerve blocks, acute pain, and perioperative care!

I hope you're ready for a deep dive on Team Music because Manny Schvartzman is here! Manny is the music director, conductor, and keyboard one player on Hamilton's Angelica Tour. In his first episode, Manny walks us through the early stages of his career, which started at around eight years old, when he started teaching himself to play piano and read music with the goal of being a classical pianist. By the time he was a freshman in high school, the word was out in Miami about kid from Buenos Aires who could play piano like nobody's business. Manny was like Schroeder - all about the classical music - and he couldn't be bothered with musicals like Fiddler on the Roof. But once he got a taste of the collaboration and storytelling involved in the theatre world, he never looked back. Being his high school's music director at 14 years old was a formative experience and then you combine it with Manny's inherent curiosity, kindness, and relentless work ethic? He's unstoppable. Manny was summoned to New York to work on On Your Feet (with the legendary Gloria Estefan) and was simultaneously making history in 2014 when he was part of the team that brought Cuba its first Broadway musical in 50 years: RENT.
