Frank Murphy is joined by Kathryn Frady of Marble City Opera. Frank bought rechargeable batteries at the suggestion of Erik Dobell. He got some no-name batteries that came in a plain wrapper from Amazon. Frank, his wife Jere, and Dr. Frank Jr. PhD went to the Dexter Cider Mill in Michigan. They bought some McIntosh apples, ginger snap cookie mix, apple cider doughnuts, fresh cider, and hard cider. The doughnuts are made with apple cider syrup. The taste reminded Frank and Jere of Crutchley Crullers, which used to be sold in the Hamptons. Frank and Dr. Frank Jr. PhD opened two different flavors of hard cider but were surprised how much was in the bottle. Frank brought back two 500ml bottles of hard cider to share with Kathryn. They will drink the traditional hard cider today and save the bourbon barrel cider for another day. Frank and Jere bought new vitamin organizers for the trip. His friend Kumi urged him to take vitamin C, vitamin D, melatonin, and zinc every day. Frank got concerned because he forgot to take his nightly vitamins and zinc one night. He got a scratchy throat the next day but now thinks it was an allergy to mold. Frank also takes some immunity boosting gummies each day. Water leaked into the container with his Airborne and elderberry gummies, partly dissolving them. Kathryn accurately guessed that Frank drank the melted gummies. Speaking of gummies, Jere bought some “Michi-gummies” as a gift for the Rocket Brothers. Kathryn thinks the Michigan-shaped gummies look like slightly misfored animal shapes. Kathryn and her husband James once went apple-picking in Michigan. There were picnic tables overlooking the Huron River behind the cider mill. There were a lot of wasps trying to get to the cider and doughnuts. Frank ate his doughnut while standing on a picnic table to be near the huge kitchen exhaust fan. The exhaust blew the wasps away from Frank. Frank arranged to meet his friend Bean at a Cracker Barrel halfway between Crossville and Knoxville. Frank told the hostess that he was there to meet a tall guy. When Bean walked in, she asked if he was there to meet the short guy. Bean has been doing his podcast from his wife's bathroom. Frank wonders why he didn't use his own bathroom. Frank has an idea for fake Airpods. They would allow you to ignore people because you're pretending to be listening to something important. Kathryn and her husband had an encounter with a woman at Jason's Deli who accused James of stealing her free ice cream. Kathryn saw her again a few days later at the church where Opéra Louisiane has its offices. This episode is sponsored by Audible. We are nearly at the end of our talk with CFO Tracy Curley when she mentions her two adult children. “I'm really blessed that they knew how important my career was to me when I was raising them,” remarks Curley, who recalls that during their younger years, it was not unusual for the children to find their mother in bed late at night answering emails on her laptop. Suddenly, the questions populating the margins of our handwritten notes no longer seem to nag at us. Why did she work for KPMG as long as she did (6 years)? Why did she move to Honolulu? Why did she not arrive in the CFO office sooner? Certainly, Curley is not the only finance leader and parent who has confessed to us a woeful email habit. However, she may be the first to allow us to witness the habit through the eyes of children. With one stray comment, the career path that we've been discussing for 40 minutes comes more sharply into view. Like many of the women finance leaders with whom we've spoken, Curley has taken longer to reach the CFO office than our average CFO guest (21 years), and indeed her path has clearly been punctuated by more than her own professional priorities. During the early years of her career, Curley was married to a military officer—a match that she says placed her in a life where “the spouse followed along.” At once, her stints with KPMG in Kansas City, Honolulu, and Boston make better sense to us. Still, it's worth mentioning that marriage was not Curley's only experience with the military. It turns out that she was among the third class of women admitted to the U.S. Military Academy and attended West Point from 1979 to 1981. When she left West Point without graduating, she was not alone. The high attrition rate for West Point's female cadets among its early classes—particularly their 3rd year—was alarmingly high. Besides the rigors of a military educational program, women cadets often faced the wrath of certain male cadets who wanted to see the women fail. “They now have more than 100 women who have graduated from Ranger School—to me, this is just phenomenal,” says Curley, referencing The Airborne and Ranger training program at Fort Benning, Georgia, known to be one of the most grueling courses in the Army. As is the case with most women finance leaders, it's not always what appears on their CFO resume that's most important, but what doesn't. Comments Curley: “My son decided to become a CPA and is now a partner at KPMG, and my daughter is now an elementary art teacher.” –Jack Sweeney

This week in the studio a graduate of the Military Academy at WestPoint and a member of units such as the 82nd Airborne, the 101st Airborne, and the White House with the Presidential Contingency Programs office. This guest even did a little clandestine work for an unnamed agency. That's not all this guest did, he also ran 9 100 mile and 7 50 mile ultra marathons, and when he could not run he raced an ultra endurance mountain bike from Canada all the way to Mexico. After receiving a third torn meniscus injury, 52 injections on his knees, and a heavy dose of nightmares, this guest wondered if a small machine called an NX PRO, which was used in his rehabilitation, could cause a passive stress reduction and give stressed out operators and first responders a Performance Reboot. Fast forward through the last two years, 250 people, 2 of the 3 Tier 1 units, a few Police Departments, SWAT teams, and EMS have been able to increase 20% in speed and accuracy of shooting in only about 45 minutes of training with my guest. I would like to introduce you to the man who is leveling the playing field for accuracy, precision, and speed on target please welcome Vance McMurry.

Summary Bill Parquette (LinkedIn; Website) joins Andrew (Twitter; LinkedIn) to discuss Denial and Deception. They discuss examples such as D-Day, the Yom Kippur War, and the Persian Gulf War. What You'll Learn Intelligence Denial and deception – what it is and why it matters Key examples of denial and deception Detecting denial and deception operations How to avoid seeing monsters everywhere Reflections How to counter denial and deception in everyday life (children, salespeople, etc.) Stumbling into new roles in new fields And much, much more… Episode Notes Sun Tzu said, “all warfare is based on deception” and so much of the natural world is also based on denial and deception: camouflage, feigning, mimicry, distraction. It is also a feature of our daily 21st century lives: spyware, trojan horses, catfishing, and spear phishing. With this week's guest we look at the Denial and Deception Committee, which aimed to discover and mitigate foreign denial and deception operations against the U.S. by coordinating efforts throughout the IC. Bill Parquette was a former Chair of the Committee. He joined the Committee in 2002 and left in 2015. He was formerly a Lt. Col. In the U.S. Army, starting his career with 10 years in the 82nd Airborne, and is currently Professor of Practice at Penn State University. And… The episode looks at deceiving others but the human capacity for self-deception and denial is VAST – from head in the sand, plugging your ears, living in denial, willful ignorance, and cognitive dissonance through to doublethink. Quote of the Week "If I have an audience of one or 100, I ask does anyone have children? And the hands get raised. And then I said, okay, did you teach your child deception or denial? And of course not. Do they conduct denial or deception? And they all said yeah, it's throughout nature, it's throughout society…it's a natural thing to deny. I didn't mom I didn't take that cookie." – Bill Parquette Resources Headline Resources “Countering Foreign Denial & Deception – Rise of Fall of a Discipline” – J. The “Old and the Bold” in the Special Forces are the military men who had a “Can Do” attitude yet lived to talk about it! 00:00 – Sam's introduction for WEDNESDAY AUGUST 10, 2022. 00:32 – Paris Dennard – RNC National Spokesman – 7 min – Paris told Sam that to read the list of things taken into evidence, like napkins, makes it clear that this is a political search for evidence with a search for a crime to follow. He said the Democrats are desperately trying to hold power, but they will lose if Republicans stay focused on grassroots political activism through the 2022 election. He said, “2024 is irrelevant if we don't do something in 2022 to take back the majority.” 07:25 – Sam, Chuck & Tom – the SM Players – 14 min – Sam, Chuck & Tom discuss the disappearance of the word ‘raid' from the reportage of the Mar-A-Lago raid story. The story is now a story of an armed 30 man search of the home of ex-president to help him locate some papers he might have mishandled. Sam said they are changing the narrative to retain the portrayal of the FBI as law enforcement instead of American Stasi, and Trump as the Bully instead of the Victim. 21:50 – Col. Steve Bucci – Heritage Foundation – 14 min – Col Bucci revealed what a “leg” is in the vernacular of the 82nd Airborne. Then he talked about the induction of a chaplain into the Ranger Hall of Fame. He said the chaplains are just as tough as the rest of the Special Forces, but they provide what the rest of the Special Forces can't. Then he talked about some of the founders of the Special Forces. He said they were a breed apart. 36:05 – Close See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
