A ton of cars, trucks and vehicles were washed away in the flooding this past Sunday. Chaz and AJ wanted to know who is in charge of getting these vehicles out of buildings, wooded areas and more. John Weid is that man, who also was part of the viral rescue efforts by Beacon Hose at Brookside. (0:00) WFSB's Scot Haney was on the phone with Chaz and AJ this morning, to hear about last night's thank you party to first responders, and announced the dinner auction, to benefit residents. Chaz, AJ and Scot will all be attedning the dinner with the winning bidder. (10:49) WFSB'd Dylan Fearon was in Oxford last night for the first responder party at Quarry Walk, and was on with Chaz and AJ this morning to talk about the incredible event, and sympathized with AJ over getting lost on Oxford roads. Plus, David Morgan from TEAM Inc. called in share more information about the money needed to make "Community Rising" work, and how it will directly help the communities in need. (27:05) Some big time donors lined up immediately after hearing David Morgan, including Mike Burton from Sandy Hook Fire, Joe, who saw his nephew Luca helped by generous donations this past winter by a fundraiser at the Hamden ice rink, Jonathan Carbutti, Rick from K&J Tree Service, Amy Stefanowski, and Don Shubert from the CCIA. Only 10% of domestic violence victims report their abuser, and of those who do file for orders of protection, only 20-25% are granted the order. Mike Burton knows the real-life implications of these statistics well. As a retired St. Louis County Circuit Judge, he oversaw countless domestic violence cases — and in doing so, he became aware of the many flaws in the system that lead to abusers not being held accountable. Alongside domestic abuse survivor Monique Green, Burton launched St. Louis Survivors Legal Support to secure adequate legal representation for victims of domestic violence.
Mike Burton is not only the creator and host of Genuine Chit-Chat and Star Wars Comics In Canon podcasts, a great friend and supporter of the show, but he's picked our movie to review for this week, Trainspotting from 1996. Trainspotting, directed by Danny Boyle, was a bold and innovative endeavor that brought Irvine Welsh's acclaimed novel to the screen. Boyle, known for his dynamic filmmaking style, collaborated with screenwriter John Hodge to adapt Welsh's darkly comedic yet harrowing exploration of heroin addiction. The film's production faced challenges in translating the novel's intense and visceral narrative to the screen, particularly in depicting the gritty and hallucinatory aspects of addiction. The casting of a talented ensemble, including Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller, and Robert Carlyle, contributed to the authenticity of the characters and the film's overall impact. Boyle's kinetic direction, combined with the pulsating soundtrack featuring tracks from iconic bands like Underworld and Iggy Pop, added an electrifying energy to the film. The production team skillfully captured the gritty urban landscapes of Edinburgh, enhancing the raw and immersive quality of the storytelling. "Trainspotting" achieved critical acclaim for its uncompromising portrayal of addiction, its dark humor, and its visual inventiveness. The film's success marked a turning point in British cinema, and its cultural impact endures, solidifying its place as a seminal work of the 1990s and a defining film of the British new wave. Mark's attempts to break free from the heroin lifestyle are marked by relapses, withdrawal struggles, and surreal hallucinations. The narrative weaves a darkly humorous and visually stylized tapestry, capturing the desperation and nihilism of a generation in the throes of addiction. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

This week brings yet another Star Wars conversation, where Dave, Maff & Mike bring you their thoughts on Attack Of The Clones! Three episodes serve as a soft lead into the Clone Wars animated series; this, the Phantom Menace chat and the upcoming Clone Wars movie review! The debate continues on the quality of the prequels as we draw nearer to the animated series that changed Star Wars forever! In more detail, the trio discuss their first impressions of Attack Of The Clones and if their views have changed. They then discuss Anakin & Padmé's somewhat questionable romance, Mike explains the mystery surrounding Sifo Dias & the clone army, the Geonosis battle, the finale lightsaber duel, what could be improved and how the film compares to The Phantom Menace. This summer, Paris will become the second city to host three summer Olympics. This week, we're merging history and the Olympics on the "Dying to Ask" podcast. Bill George is the author of a new book called "Victory in the Pool." Decades before Team USA celebrated names like Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky, Sacramento was the center of U.S. swimming, and its aquatic leader was a guy named Sherm Chavoor. Chavoor coached athletes, including Debbie Meyer, Mark Spitz and Mike Burton, to win Olympic gold medals between 1968 and 1972. Chavoor coached at the Arden Hills Swim and Tennis Club. But he wasn't a swimmer himself. And Sherm Chavoor wasn't even his real name. "He didn't publicize it. His real name was Izikiel Correa and he was a poor kid from the Oakland area. He came to Sacramento as a swim coach and became famous as Sherm Chavoor. Everybody knew him as Sherm Chavoor. I think even his swimmers never really realized his real name," George said. On this Dying to Ask: How Sherm Chavoor became Sherm Chavoor. How he started a swimming dynasty that defied race, religion and social status. And how a natural knack for marketing led underdog swimmers and a green coach to greatness.

Mike Burton is a fullback in the NFL with the Denver Broncos. He came to the NFL as a fifth round selection by the Detroit Lions in 2015 after a successful college career at Rutgers. After two seasons with the Lions, Burton would spend the next four seasons with Chicago, New Orleans and Washington. In 2021, he signed with Kansas City and last season, he played in Super Bowl LVII and won a championship with the Chiefs. In March of 2023, he signed a one-year deal with the Denver Broncos. Today on the podcast, we talk to Burton about winning a Super Bowl, signing a contract to play with Denver and why his faith in Jesus has sustained him in the ups and downs of his NFL journey.
