Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company from 1995–2001. She founded Alexandra Beller/Dances in 2002, creating more than forty dance-theater works across the U.S., Europe, and Asia. Her theater credits include Off-Broadway productions of Sense and Sensibility (Folger Shakespeare, A.R.T., Portland Center Stage; Helen Hayes Award, Lortel nomination), How to Transcend a Happy Marriage (Lincoln Center Theater), and The Mad Ones, as well as regional work with Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, La MaMa, La Jolla Playhouse, Milwaukee Rep, and The Goodman Theatre. Everyone talks about what it takes to win. Nobody talks about what comes the morning after. In this episode, Jake and Damian go deep into the HPP archive to explore one of the most uncomfortable truths in high performance: why the moment of victory so often leaves elite performers feeling empty, lost, and at a total loss for what comes next.Featuring conversations with Yaya Touré on the strange emptiness of retirement, Ben Ainslie on the post-Olympic blues that hit 24 hours after winning gold, Ian Thorpe on walking away from a sport that stopped feeling like his own, Héctor Bellerín on why your value should burn like a candle - steady, never spiking - and Billy Monger on finding purpose after having it stripped away entirely.Jake and Damian also get into the psychology of why we delay our happiness, what self-determination theory tells us about intrinsic motivation, and why the people who handle the end of peak achievement best are the ones who were never only defined by it.The question isn't really 'what do you do the day after you win?' It's 'who are you when the goal is gone?'Listen to the full episodes: Yaya Touré https://pod.fo/e/3f55a1Ben Ainslie https://pod.fo/e/661e6Ian Thorpe https://pod.fo/e/d9a3aHéctor Bellerín https://pod.fo/e/d3369Billy Monger https://pod.fo/e/a8d2c Hosted on Acast. Send us Fan MailIn my book The Christian Past That Wasn't (Broadleaf Books), I spend two chapters on the factors that make Christian nationalism attractive. In this segment, I interview Dean of Oklahoma Christian University's College of Bible, Jeremie Beller on the subject of terror management. This theory provides a powerful, research-based account of what makes nationalism attractive to people. Jeremie's theological expertise provides a novel perspective on the application of terror management to Christian nationalism. I go into this topic in depth in chapter one of the new book. Chapter two discusses the role of deception by Christian organizations and how ingroup bias keeps people loyal to the overall group goals despite the deception. To order the book go to www.christianpast.com.Written, produced, and hosted by Warren Throckmorton

On Your World of Creativity, we travel around the world talking with creative practitioners who turn ideas into impact. Today we're stepping into the studio with a guest to explore what it really means to trust yourself, dismantle habits, and make braver, more embodied art. Welcome choreographer, director, educator and author … Alexandra Beller.Alexandra's Website@alexandrabellerdances on InstagramAlexandra on YouTubeAlexandra's Facebook pageLinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/alexandra-beller-0a56a57A former member of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, she is now the Artistic Director of Alexandra Beller/Dances, having created more than 40 dance theater works internationally. Her teaching spans Princeton University, the Laban Institute, and residencies around the globe. In theater, she's worked Off-Broadway and regionally, with credits including Lincoln Center and A.R.T.Alexandra is currently writing two books:The Embodied Conductor (Meredith Music, 2025) andThe Anatomy of Art (Bloomsbury, 2026).Her work blends somatic practice, rigorous inquiry, and creative freedom to help artists deepen their process and unlock new possibilities.1 — The Creative Process as a Living PracticeAlexandra, you've spent decades inside the creative process — as performer, choreographer, director, and educator. What inspired you to write a book about the creative process now, and what do you hope artists take away from it?Follow-up:The Anatomy of Art reads like a field guide for creative life — part poetic meditation, part practical workbook — with chapters on Time, Space, Meaning, Relationship, Process, Material, and more. Each section offers inquiry prompts, embodiment exercises, and devising practices that help artists reconnect to their sensory intelligence and personal voice. You also weave in contributions from seminal voices like Anne Bogart and Deborah Hay, folding perspectives from across disciplines and generations into the book. Can you share how you designed The Anatomy of Art to live at that intersection of instinct and analysis — and why it felt important to create something that offers rigorous tools while still honoring the mystery of making?2 — Trust, Doubt, and Creative CourageYou speak often about trusting yourself in the creative process. That sounds simple — but it's incredibly difficult in practice. What does it really mean to trust yourself as an artist — and how do creatives actually begin to do that?Optional follow-up:What role does doubt play? Is it something to eliminate — or something to work with?3 — Structure and FreedomYou work with systems like Laban and Bartenieff — which are rigorous, structured methodologies — yet your approach is also deeply poetic and personal. How do you balance structure and freedom in your work? And more broadly, how can artists use structure without becoming constrained by it?4 — Dismantling Habits & Artistic ReinventionYou talk about dismantling habits — creatively and personally. Why is breaking creative habits so essential for growth? What happens if we don't?Follow-up:Is there a connection between the parts of ourselves we hide and the habits we form in our art?5 — Joy, Burnout & Staying PorousArtists often struggle with burnout, pressure, comparison, and the fear of not being “enough.”How can artists stay porous and brave without becoming overwhelmed? And how do we create conditions for joy — especially in careers that can feel filled with struggle?Key themes:• The body as intelligence• Trust as a practice, not a personality trait• Structure as a container for freedom• Dismantling habits to create braver work• Joy as a discipline

In this reflective episode of 5 Minutes of Peace, choreographer and educator Alexandra Beller guides us through a simple yet profound breathing practice rooted in awareness, not control.Rather than “holding” the breath, Alexandra invites us to pause at the top of the inhale and the bottom of the exhale, waiting until the body naturally asks for the next breath. In these quiet, in-between spaces, something deeper begins to emerge — sensation, awareness, even insight. This practice highlights breath as a bridge between the conscious and unconscious mind, offering an embodied way to access creativity, release habitual patterns, and reconnect with inner rhythm.Listeners are encouraged to explore these pauses as portals — places where inspiration (literally, “inhalation”) can arise when we soften effort and begin to listen.Key Takeaways• Pause, don't force — allow the body to guide the rhythm of breath• The spaces between breaths are powerful — moments of insight and awareness often arise there• Breath connects mind and body — linking conscious choice with unconscious processes• Creativity is natural — our first form of creativity is problem-solving• Notice and release habits — breath can help us interrupt patterns that no longer serve usMemorable Moment“It's less about control and more about listening for the body to say, I need something… or I am ready to let go of something.”About our GuestAlexandra Beller (MFA, CMA) is a choreographer, director, and educator, and a former member of the Bill T. In this episode of The Filmumentaries Podcast, I'm joined by filmmaker John Campopiano and producer Jim Beller to talk about their new documentary, The Farmer and the Shark. The film centres on Craig Kingsbury, a farmer from Martha's Vineyard who appeared in Jaws (1975), playing Ben Gardner, the local fisherman whose abandoned boat is discovered by Chief Brody early in the film. From that small but unforgettable role, the documentary explores Craig's life, his connection to the island, and how his story intersects with the legacy of Jaws. John Campopiano is the director of the film and is known for documentaries including Unearthed & Untold: The Path to Pet Sematary and Pennywise: The Story of IT. Jim Beller is one of the producers of The Farmer and the Shark - former producer of my Inside Jaws - A Filmumentary and all round Jaws expert.I should note that I haven't seen the finished film yet, so this conversation focuses on the making of the documentary, how the project came together, why Craig Kingsbury's story stood out, earning trust, and shaping a film around a real person whose life briefly intersected with a cinematic landmark. If you're looking for a calm, thoughtful conversation about film history, storytelling, and the people behind the scenes, I hope this episode provides a welcome distraction. Welcome to the DMF! I'm Justin Younts, and in this episode I sit down with Alexandra Beller to dive deep into the role of movement in theater and performance.Alexandra breaks down how movement evolves organically through collaboration between actors, directors, and designers. She explains how the actor's body, the director's vision, and the text itself all interact to create a fully realized performance. Rather than treating movement as something added on, Alexandra emphasizes how it emerges naturally when those elements are truly in dialogue with one another. She shares insight into analyzing character dynamics and highlights the importance of timing in dialogue. Using examples from television, Alexandra contrasts the rapid-fire rhythm of shows like Gilmore Girls with the more spacious, emotionally driven pacing of This Is Us, illustrating how tempo and rhythm shape audience response.Alexandra also discusses the significance of space onstage—how proximity, distance, and physical orientation can deeply influence emotional stakes and storytelling. Her approach offers practical tools for actors to make clearer, more grounded choices that resonate with audiences.Whether you're an aspiring actor or a seasoned performer, this conversation is packed with valuable techniques to deepen your craft. Welcome to the DMF! I'm Justin Younts, and in this episode, Alexandra Beller takes us deep into the role of movement in acting and how it naturally evolves through collaboration between actors, directors, and designers.Alexandra explains that movement isn't something imposed on a performance—it emerges from the relationship between body language, text, and the energetic exchange between characters. She talks about recognizing when something feels “off” in a scene and how that friction can actually be used as a creative tool to strengthen performance rather than something to avoid.Drawing from examples in television, Alexandra discusses how shows like Gilmore Girls and This Is Us use timing, rhythm, and dialogue to generate emotional impact. She emphasizes the importance of authenticity and stakes, noting how a director's guidance around movement can deepen narrative clarity and emotional truth.Throughout the conversation, Alexandra highlights how physical choices can reveal character intention and elevate storytelling. She also introduces her upcoming book, The Anatomy of Art, which explores the artistic process and includes practical exercises designed to help creatives grow through embodied practice. If you're interested in how movement, energy, and intention intersect in performance, this episode offers valuable insight into how physicality can transform acting from the inside out.00:00:00 - Introduction00:00:18 - Collaboration in Art00:01:05 - Analyzing and Understanding Actors00:01:37 - Interpreting and Directing Dialogues00:02:51 - Stylization and Context in Film00:04:39 - Reading Characters and Predicting Outcomes00:06:12 - Understanding Body Language in Acting00:09:14 - Interpreting Non-Verbal Communication00:11:21 - Experiencing Film and Theater00:11:50 - Engagement and Authenticity in Performance00:12:54 - Influence of Global Theater on Work00:13:07 - Working with Directors00:13:55 - Constellatory Thinking in Directing00:15:45 - The Role of Embodiment in Directing00:17:30 - The Art of Choreography00:18:58 - Influence of Global Theater Styles00:21:21 - Praxis Space: An Artistic Community00:21:22 - The Anatomy of Art: A New Book00:21:22 - The Anatomy of Art: A Deeper Dive00:25:47 - The Role of Directing in Acting00:30:00 - Inside the Actor's Studio: Quick Answers00:31:29 - Reading Habits and Preferences00:32:04 - Listening Preferences00:32:04 - Watching Preferences00:33:16 - Discussion on Recent Movies00:33:22 - In-depth Analysis of Superman Reboot00:36:24 - Contact Information and Course Offerings00:37:24 - Closing RemarksCheck out her website: https://www.alexandrabellerdances.org/

Welcome to the DMF. I'm Justin Younts, and in this episode, Alexandra Beller dives deep into the four categories of energy: weight, space, time, and flow—and how understanding these elements can radically transform an actor's process.Alexandra explains that each category exists on a spectrum, and learning to work with them gives actors practical, embodied tools instead of vague direction. She addresses a common frustration performers face: when a director asks for something like “more aggressive” without explaining what that actually means. Alexandra breaks down how to translate those abstract notes into clear, physical choices that live in the body. She emphasizes that the body often understands things language can't articulate, and that tapping into physical instinct leads to more truthful, grounded performances. Alexandra also shares her approach to directing, which prioritizes physicality, intuition, and energetic awareness over rigid intellectual analysis.Throughout the conversation, she explores how actors can use energy dynamics to deepen their work—whether in rehearsal, performance, or character preparation. Alexandra also discusses the balance between instinct and analysis, showing how both can coexist to elevate an actor's craft rather than compete with each other. If you're an actor looking to unlock new levels of creativity, presence, and expression, this episode offers powerful tools to rethink how you approach performance. Writer and editor Thomas Beller joins me to discuss his new essay collection Degas at the Gas Station. The essays trace his experience of fatherhood through the landscapes of his own childhood, including the early death of his psychoanalyst father and Tom's later return—wife and children in tow—to the very Manhattan apartment where he was raised. We talk about some of the fundamental conflicts of personal writing, including the ethics of writing about your children and even your ambivalence about parenthood. We also discuss why some writers feel trapped inside the genres that come most naturally to them, how the literary sensibility of The New Yorker shaped the styles of generations of writers, and how Tom is feeling about New York City these days. The episode was recorded on the morning of November 4, Election Day, and Tom talks about why he's voting for Zohran Mamdani—and why he thinks some of my early writing relates directly to Mamdani's platform. Guest Bio: Thomas Beller is a long time contributor to the New Yorker and the author of several books including Lost in the Game: A Book about Basketball, also published by Duke University Press; J.D. Salinger: The Escape Artist; and The Sleep-Over Artist. A 2024-25 Guggenheim fellow, he is a founding editor of Open City Magazine and Books and Mrbellersneighborhood.com, and  Professor and Director of creative writing at Tulane University.

Between the release of the two versions, Dweezil Zappa fired longtime Zappa bassist Scott Thunes due to inter-band conflicts; subsequently, the band hired bassist Bryan Beller, a Berklee honors graduate based on the recommendation of drummer Joe Travers (who had played extensively with Beller at Berklee) and an exhausting 5-day audition. After this change, the band continued to record. As a result, the European version of the album differs from the American version, which replaces "What Went Wrong In The Real World?", and "Bellybutton" with "In My Mind" and "My Beef Mailbox", both featuring Beller on bass. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:31 UTC on Tuesday, 25 November 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Shampoohorn on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Ayanda.
