Shaun also talks about how the band really put an emphasis on trying to get out of their normal writing mode and how that has allowed them to really make the songs be the best they can be. We also talk about how it is to watch kids become their own person, how it's been for Shaun to have his kids see him perform, and if thinks his kids will chase their own passions since they see their dad doing a creative outlet as a profession and more in this chat with the Taking Back Sunday bassist. In this episode, I have my first guest! My buddy Adam and I chat about the second album "Where You Want to Be" from Emo virtuosos Taking Back Sunday. Where You Want to Be is the second studio album by American rock band Taking Back Sunday. While touring to promote Tell All Your Friends (2002), guitarist John Nolan and bassist Shaun Cooper left the group and were replaced by Fred Mascherino and Matt Rubano, respectively. After a co-headlining tour with Saves the Day in fall 2003, the band began working on Where You Want to Be. Dismissive of several early songs, they wanted to "grow musically with this [new album]." In March 2004 recording of Where You Want to Be began, with Lou Giordano as producer. The band recorded at Mission Sound in Brooklyn, New York for two weeks before moving to Water Music in Hoboken, New Jersey, finishing recording by April. Where You Want to Be has received mixed-to-positive reviews, selling 163,000 copies in its first week. The album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 chart, remaining there for an additional 19 weeks. It topped the Independent Albums chart and remained on that chart for 50 weeks. "A Decade Under the Influence" reached number 16 on the Alternative Songs chart and the UK Top 75 chart. Where You Want to Be is Victory's highest-charting album; in July 2005 it was certified gold in the U.S. for sales of 500,000 copies, and sales have since exceeded 700,000. Shaun joins us to sort of talk about Straylight Runs upcoming live album that was recorded back in 2000. We also get into talking about our thoughts on how schooling has changed since we went through it and if we were really taught or prepared for life at all versus how Shaun's kids are learning now. We get into this rabbit hole of Internet culture and how technology has allowed us to learn so much, but has created an environment of people looking for instant gratification and how entertainers and people as a whole are effected by this. We had the pleasure of interviewing John Nolan of Straylight Run over Zoom video! Craft Recordings is thrilled to announce Straylight Run's Live at the Patchogue Theatre — the band's only live album, captured at the height of their success in 2005…and then shelved for 15 years. While a handful of tracks from the performance were shared in 2020 as a Bandcamp exclusive, the forthcoming release will now include the full 16-song set and will be available for fans to enjoy on CD, vinyl, and across all digital platforms. A special edition of the 2-LP set —pressed on red marble vinyl and limited to 500 units — will also be sold exclusively on the band's webstore. All formats can be pre-ordered today, while the advance single "Existentialism on Prom Night (Live At The Patchogue Theatre, Long Island, NY/2005)" is available to stream or download now. Originally formed in 2003 by Taking Back Sunday's John Nolan (vocals, piano, guitar) and Shaun Cooper (bass), Straylight Run marked a sonic departure for the artists, who opted for reflective, indie rock songs over the heavier material that they were known for. Nolan and Cooper were soon joined by drummer Will Noon (formerly of Breaking Pangaea) and singer, guitarist, and pianist Michelle DaRosa. Straylight Run released their self-titled debut in 2004 through Victory Records, earning critical acclaim and a Top 5 spot on Billboard's Independent Albums chart. A year later, they followed with their EP, Prepare to Be Wrong. During this time, the band stayed busy on the road, supporting acts like Coheed and Cambria, The Used, and Motion City Soundtrack, as well as headlining the Vans Warped Tour. In 2005, the band booked a hometown concert at Long Island's Patchogue Theatre to raise funds for a friend in need. Aiming to release a live DVD, they filmed and recorded the show. In a statement, Nolan recalled that "the feeling in the room and on stage that night was incredible… Unfortunately, the [video] footage ended up being unusable, so plans for the DVD were scrapped. The audio from the show sounded great, but at the time we were getting ready to release our first EP, so putting out a live album at the same time didn't make sense." He continued, "We didn't know what to do with the recording, so it stayed on the shelf with the idea in the back of our minds that we'd release it someday." In April 2020, the band shared ten of those songs on Bandcamp — donating 100% of proceeds to Feeding America — and reunited for a one-off livestream performance. Now, with the full release of Live at the Patchogue Theatre, fans can enjoy the only live recordings of songs from Straylight Run and Prepare to Be Wrong, including such favorites as "Existentialism on Prom Night," "The Tension and the Terror," and "Hands in the Sky (Big Shot)." After that evening, Straylight Run went on to release one more album (2007's The Needles the Space) as well as three more EPs before announcing an indefinite hiatus in 2010. That same year, Nolan and Cooper resumed their work with Taking Back Sunday. Today, they continue to record and tour with the best-selling alt-rock band. DaRosa, meanwhile, went on to form the band Destry with Cooper, along with members of The Format and Cassino. Will Noon played drums with the best-selling group, fun., and is currently one half of the Los Angeles-based duo Mourners. In this episode you will be hearing me as a guest of 'The Hustle & Flow Podcast' hosted by Leslie Lau & Shaun Cooper. In one of my earlier episodes I referred to life like a game of poker saying "You are dealt a hand to play with & it's out of your control. If you choose to fold early & throw in your chips your game is finished. But, if you choose to hold on, keep the faith & wait for the river, your life might just get a whole lot richer". Les & Shaun used this piece as the framework of the episode as we dived in deep on a chat that I really enjoyed & I hope you do too! SisterFriends take a listen to this great interview with our first two male guest!
We had the opportunity to interview Taking Back Sunday! "If you can't believe that Taking Back Sunday have been around for 20 years, you're not alone, because they can't either. Although the pride of Long Island have had a handful of member changes over the years, the current lineup of the band – vocalist Adam Lazzara, guitarist John Nolan, drummer Mark O'Connell and bassist Shaun Cooper – have all been there since the beginning. From the band's landmark 2002 debut Tell All Your Friends to their most recent full-length, 2016's Tidal Wave, Taking Back Sunday have evolved from a key player in the early 2000s emo scene to a genre-defying rock band who have three gold albums without ever ceasing to push the limitations of their sound. This fact is evidenced on Twenty, a 21-song collection set for release on January 11, 2019 via Craft Recordings that spans all seven of their full-lengths and solidifies them as an act with a catalog that will undoubtedly outlive them. By now you know the basic history of the band, so we thought it'd be apt to look back at the fact that almost none of it happened... “When I joined Taking Back Sunday in 1999, it was the first real band that I had ever been a part of, but it never crossed my mind that I would be doing this twenty years later. When I came in to audition it was just [original vocalist] Antonio [Longo] and [founding TBS guitarist and former Movielife member] Eddie Reyes. Eddie had started enough bands that he was like, 'I know how to do this, I can just call one guy.' But it was a crazy thing. When it started out, there was a lot more likelihood that it would fizzle out in a few months than it would last a few years. I tried out, and basically after we jammed for a couple of hours Eddie was like, 'All right, you're in. You have to get some different equipment though... and I'll sell it to you.' I think he sold me a head and cabinet for $200 [that] had to be worth at least $600.” -John Nolan “My entry into the band is pretty interesting. One day my brother said, 'Hey, my friend is looking for a drummer and he wanted to know if you wanted to try out.' But once I realized he was talking about Eddie, I had second thoughts. I remembered Eddie was the jerk who would yell at me and Shaun and all of our friends in front of Shaun's house when we would hang out there because he would be going to Movielife practice. So I said, 'No, I don't want to play in a band with that guy.' Then maybe two months later Shaun and I were hanging out [with] my mutual friend at a restaurant where Antonio worked and our friend said, 'Yo, my boy needs a drummer for his band if you want to try out.' The first song I heard was 'Go On' and I was like, 'Wow, this definitely has a lot of potential,' so I agreed. On my first tryout I remember walking in and seeing John, Antonio and then guess who's there? Eddie Reyes. I was like, 'Oh, what's up, man? How are you doing?' That was it.” -Mark O'Connell “I didn't know anyone in Taking Back Sunday initially; I just knew who Eddie was because some of the bands from Long Island would play in North Carolina. I had just moved back to Greensboro from Wilmington and I didn't really have anything going on aside from delivering Chinese food, so I really wanted to be playing music. I ended up in a booth with Eddie and Antonio at the after show hangout spot, Waffle House, after an ill-fated Sons Of Abraham show and heard they needed a bass player for their new project. They said, 'Yeah, you should come up.' A couple of weeks later me and my friend Chris drove his 1988 Honda Accord up to New York, I tried out and then drove back. A few weeks later I got a call from Eddie [who] said, 'If you want to do this, we have some shows coming up.' So I flew to Long Island and never came back. Looking back now it's funny because I was like, 'I'm moving to New York, it's going to be so sick.' Then I moved to Long Island and it was kind of a bummer. It was just like North Carolina... only way more crowded.” -Adam Lazzara “Mark and I have played in bands together as long as we’ve known each other, which is over 30 years. When he joined Taking Back Sunday, I begged him to get me a bass audition. At first Mark told me that since I was so unreliable in our previous bands that he couldn’t vouch for me, so I got serious, enrolled in night classes at a local college and tried to get my act together. About a month later, Mark noticed a change but sadly some kid from North Carolina was ditching everything he knew to move to New York to play bass in the band. Adam was a good bass player but he had a manic, magnetic energy on stage that everyone in the crowd was captivated by. Suddenly Antonio was out and Eddie made Adam put down the bass and grab a microphone. Mark got me a tryout for the band December 26, 2000. I played along to the demo day and night, made myself fall in love with those songs and played my first show at our friend's house a few days later on New Year’s Eve.” -Shaun Cooper The rest is history. Taking Back Sunday may have started out like most of their peers by playing local shows and recording demos; however, unlike most of those peers they went on to sign to a major label, tour alongside Linkin Park and become international superstars. That said, they still speak of the band's early days as if they just happened yesterday. “I'll never forget, we played Ground Zero in Long Island in 2001 and it was the first show we played where people were singing along and going crazy. It was a tiny place that held 100 people but you could sense something had changed,” Lazzara recalls. “After the show I remember we carried some equipment back to John's car and we were sitting in it just not saying anything. We were just thinking, 'that was the best thing ever.' I was starry-eyed and staring into space; I couldn't believe that just happened.” Nolan concurs, adding, “Even after the band got a lot bigger and did things that were a lot more impressive, that moment was really huge because you could tell something was happening. Everyone was going nuts and that really stands out to me as being one of the defining moments of Taking Back Sunday.” Twenty is a celebration not only of those career-defining moments but of the landmark albums that chronicle the band's story: 2002's Tell All Your Friends, 2004's Where You Want To Be, 2006's Louder Now, 2009's New Again, 2011's Taking Back Sunday, 2014's Happiness Is and 2016's Tidal Wave, all of which are represented on this collection. Whether your introduction to the band was singing along to “A Decade Under The Influence” in a sweaty club or hearing “MakeDamnSure” or “Sink Into Me” on the radio, Twenty is a look back at some of the highlights from this unlikely group of musical misfits. Additionally, fans will be able to hear two newly recorded songs, “All Ready To Go” and “A Song For Dan,” which hint at the direction that Taking Back Sunday are heading in the coming years. Musical legacy aside, ultimately what's most impressive is the fact that after two decades and countless successes, Taking Back Sunday have managed to preserve that initial spark that excited them as teenagers. That fact alone is one worth celebrating, so turn it up and listen loud." For more info, visit TakingBackSunday.com We want to hear from you! Cold Iron from 'Rewards and Fairies' by Rudyard Kipling Rudyard Kipling was an English journalist, short-story writer, poet, and novelist. Kipling's works of fiction include The Jungle Book (1894), Kim (1901), Puck of Pook's Hill (1906) and many short stories, including "The Man Who Would Be King" (1888). His poems include "Mandalay" (1890), "Gunga Din" (1890), "The Gods of the Copybook Headings" (1919), "The White Man's Burden" (1899), and "If—" (1910). He is regarded as a major innovator in the art of the short story; his children's books are classics of children's literature, and one critic described his work as exhibiting "a versatile and luminous narrative gift". Rewards and Fairies is a historical fantasy book by Rudyard Kipling published in 1910. The book consists of a series of short stories set in historical times with a linking contemporary narrative. Dan and Una are two children, living in the Weald of Sussex in the area of Kipling's own home Bateman's. Bateman's, Sussex They have encountered Puck and he magically conjures up real and fictional individuals from Sussex's past to tell the children some aspect of its history and prehistory, though the episodes are not always historically accurate. Another recurring character is Old Hobden who represents the continuity of the inhabitants of the land. His ancestors sometimes appear in the stories and seem very much like him. The full text of Rewards & Fairies can be found on Project Gutenberg. For more details about Rudyard Kipling visit the Wiki Page or Kipling Societ's website. Shakespeare's Puck & Sussex Pharisees We discuss how Shakespeare may have heard the folklore of Puck on his travels with the Elizabethan court. The local Sussex word for Fairies, Pharisees, comes from the double plural found in the dialect - 'fairies-ies' or 'pharisees'. "Then we have 'Puck' or 'Pook', which is derived from the Saxon word 'Puca', meaning a Goblin (Smith 1956 p.74). Both modern forms are common in placenames as will be seen later in this article, but also occurs as dialect description of fairies, but not just Goblins, which are seen as mischievous or nasty fairies (Simpson & Roud 2000 p.286). 'Dobbs' or 'Master Dobbs' is a name used for a house fairy that helps with the housework. If someone has been working harder than expected, it was often said of them that 'Master Dobbs has been helping you' (Parish & Hall 1957 p.31)." [Sussexarch.org] Iron from Stone by Damh the Bard This song, Iron from Stone, is inspired by the earlier song, Scarborough Faire. Damh tells us: "Scarborough Faire is an amazing song. Such a wonderful melody and lyric that tells of all of the impossible tasks a human woman would need to achieve to be with a man from Elfland. But I began to wonder… "These wonderful folk songs have been left us by anonymous writers from years ago and have been sung ever since. But is there another story behind Scarborough Faire? What about that songwriter from years ago? What inspired them to write such a song? So I thought I would tell that story." Damh the Bard You can find his music on iTunes, or from his website, Pagan Music. He is also the voice behind Druidcast, the official podcast of the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids (OBOD, for short) - modern day Druids. You can find Druidcast here and find out more about OBOD here. You can find out more details about Damh on his Contributor page on our website. Cold Iron by Rudyard Kipling Puck, Dan & Una "Cold Iron" is a poem written by Rudyard Kipling published as the introduction to Rewards and Fairies in 1910. In 1983, Leslie Fish set the poem to music and recorded it as the title track on her fifth cassette-tape album. Song of the Travelling Fairies by Kate Fletcher & Corwen Broch Song of the Travelling Fairies is a Manx lullaby collected in 1930 by Mona Douglas from Caesar Cashin who said that after each verse there used to be a little dance imitating the movements of the particular bird named. It comes from Fishe or Fowle - Kate and Corwen's new duo CD. It is a double CD with 25 tracks. Available now, as a physical CD from their website or to download from Bandcamp. Cameron recently sat down with Shaun Cooper and John Nolan of Taking Back Sunday to discuss the Taste of Chaos tour, their new album, internet criticism, Billy Joel, and much more.
Taking Back Sunday is truly a band that needs little introduction. The Long Island quintet changed the emo and contemporary punk games forever back in 2002 with the release of Tell All Your Friends, and they went on to enjoy mainstream success thanks to hits like "MakeDamnSure." Of course, none of this was without turmoil; guitarist/vocalist John Nolan and bassist Shaun Cooper unceremoniously departed the band in 2003, later going on to form Straylight Run before returning to TBS in 2010. I caught up with Cooper and drummer Mark O'Connell in Silver Spring, Maryland to chat about their new album, Happiness Is, and major-label horror stories. If you like what you hear, be sure to subscribe to the podcast on iTunes or Stitcher so you don’t miss a single episode of the stories behind your favorite songs.
