On our latest episode of First Chapter Friday, Mr. Chambers reads the first chapter (and change) of Caraval by Stephanie Garber. Caraval follows sisters Scarlett and Tella as they embark on a journey to the yearly Caraval - a mysterious invitation-only performance in which the audience participates. After Tella is captured and revealed to be part of this year's game, Scarlett must do whatever it takes to find her.

Originally recorded back in 2020, for this week's Select, Mr. Chambers will be reading a short story called, "The Bet" by Anton Chekhov. This short story attempts to answer whether it is worse to be put to death or live the rest of your life in prison.

In our first installment of Short Story Tuesday, Mr. Chambers reads "Old Glory" by Bruce Coville. "Old Glory" focuses on a grandson who is struggling to come to terms with some of the outdated ideas of his grandfather and deals with themes about freedom of speech and what to do when the government becomes too powerful.

On our latest episode of First Chapter Friday, Mr. Chambers reads the first chapter of Thieves' Gambit by Kayvion Lewis. Thieves' Gambit follows Rossalyn 'Ross' Quest, a third generation thief who spends her days plotting and executing elaborate heists. But after her mother is kidnapped, Ross needs a plan to get her back. This book is featured on the 2023-24 Texas Lone Star Reading list and is available in our Library.

In this week's bonus second episode of First Chapter Friday, Mr. Chambers reads the first two chapters of The Tenth Mistake of Hank Hooperman by Gennifer Choldenko. The Tenth Mistake of Hank Hooperman follows Hank Hooperman and his little sister Boo as they attempt to survive on their own after their mother suddenly disappears after a night out. This book is a new addition to our library; come check it out sometime!

In this week's episode of First Chapter Friday, Mr. Chambers reads the first few chapters of The Probability of Everything by Sarah Everett. The Probability of Everything follows eleven-year-old Kemi Carter, a kid obsessed with probability and statistics, as she and her family react to the news that an asteroid now has a 84.7% chance of colliding directly with Earth. This book is another title on the Texas Lone Star list for this year.

In our newest episode of First Chapter Friday, Mr. Chambers reads the first few chapters of A Duet for Home by Karina Yan Glaser. A Duet for Home follows June and Tyrell, two children living in Huey House - a homeless shelter - in alternating POV chapters. This book is another title on the Texas Lone Star list for this year.

In our second episode of the new school year, Mr. Chambers reads the first few chapters of A Rover's Story by Jasmine Warga. A Rover's Story follows Resilience (or Res), a newly created Mars rover, as he embarks on a new journey on a new planet and discovers what it truly means to be human. A Rover's Story is another one of the titles of the Texas Lone Star List this year.

In the first episode of the new school year, Mr. Chambers reads the first few pages of Dinged by author Tommy Greenwald. Dinged centers around freshman star quarterback, Caleb Springer, as he tries to determine whether the game he has made his entire life is worth risking it all for. Dinged is one of the books on this year's Texas Lone Star Reading List.

In our most recent episode, Mr. Chambers reads the first few pages of Good Different by author Meg Eden Kuyatt. Good Different centers around Selah, an individual on the autism spectrum, as she tries to navigate new changes around her school and an unlikely incident that leaves her in jeopardy of being expelled.

In our first episode of the New Year, Mr. Chambers reads the prologue of Are You Afraid of the Dark: The Tale of the Gravemother by author Rin Chupeco. Are You Afraid of the Show was a former television series on Nickelodeon that has been recently converted into a series of horror novels. The Tale of the Gravemother is the first book of the series.

This is the full audio version of The Summer with the Blues written by Ed FitzGerald. In the summer of 1950 some extraordinary events transpired in the life of an ordinary 14-year old boy. Through a series of totally unexpected occurrences the protagonist played catch with future Hall of Fame baseball players and former famous All American athletes while working for the Kansas City Blues Baseball Club. With humor and poignancy the life of a Catholic boy living in the 1950s is recalled by the 85 year old author.
