Ben can't do pull-ups anymore, so it's a great time to talk to Admiral William McRaven. The guys talk about the fine line between swagger and arrogance, the importance of clear communication, and the way McRaven built his teams of Navy Seals. Lots of conversation about failure as a teacher and McRaven's top-5 must-read book […]

It's our annual Memorial Day tradition, as we're once again re-airing an interview we did back in 2017 with retired Admiral William “Bill” McRaven. If Bill's name sounds familiar, it's because he presided over the 2011 Navy SEAL raid that resulted in the killing of Osama bin Laden in Pakistan. A few years later in 2014, the four-star admiral and 37-year Navy SEAL veteran delivered the commencement speech at his alma mater, the University of Texas at Austin. Little did McRaven know that his address, which spoke to how students could overcome challenges and change themselves, would become a viral hit with 20 million views online. McRaven was eventually encouraged to expand his commencement speech into a book, Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life…And Maybe the World. Have a money question? Michael revisits his powerful CNN interview with Admiral William McRaven, the former Navy SEAL commander behind Operation Neptune Spear and author of "Duty, Honor, Country and Life." After asking McRaven to read from his poem “I Remember,” a tribute to fallen service members and Gold Star families, the moment turned unexpectedly emotional. Michael reflects on the silence, the sacrifice, and why listeners say America needs more leaders like McRaven. Original air date 4 May 2026. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Retired four-star Admiral and former commander of US Special Operations Command William McRaven oversaw the 2011 Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden. Beyond his military career, McRaven became widely known for his “Make Your Bed” commencement speech which has been viewed more than 150 million times. Now he's out with a new book, Duty, Honor, Country, and Life, a collection of speeches and essays rooted in the West Point motto he's spent a lifetime trying to embody. Admiral McRaven speaks, at times necessarily diplomatically (as we’re at war), at times candidly, about the state of the US military under the Trump administration, the war with Iran, and his growing concern that the president may not fully understand the limits of military power. He reflects on what it means to maintain integrity in an institution under pressure, why he believes the next generation of Americans gives him reason for optimism, and what he wants readers to take away from a book he says is as much for civilians as it is for soldiers.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

At McRaven House in Vicksburg, Mississippi, history wasn't built all at once—it was layered. A highwayman's hideout. A childbirth that ended in tragedy. A Civil War siege that turned a home into a hospital. And decades of isolation that froze the house in time. Each generation left something behind. And according to those who've walked its halls… none of it ever left. A bandit's bolthole, a sheriff's showcase, a wartime hospital—McRaven House compresses centuries into a single haunted address, and it doesn't whisper so much as answer back. We dive into the Pioneer roots of 1797, where highwayman Andrew Glass built a one-story hideout on the Natchez Trace, then follow the 1836 Empire-style expansion by Sheriff Stephen Howard and the 1849 Greek Revival polish from brickmaker John H. Bob. Architecture becomes a timeline you can walk, and every room has a reason to remember. The Civil War carved those memories deep. During the 43-day Siege of Vicksburg, McRaven served as a Confederate hospital and took cannon fire while casualties mounted. Locals believe hundreds were interred in a mass grave on the property—close enough that visitors still feel the ground pulling at their thoughts. That context lights up modern investigations: footsteps on empty floors, a balcony figure locking eyes, and sudden bursts of equipment hits when the questions turn to parties in the parlor. When a femur surfaced during utility work, guides say the house bristled for days, as if the soil itself had something to say. What lingers most are the people. Mary Elizabeth, married at twelve and gone by sixteen during childbirth, is the house's gentlest presence—seen in a wedding dress or mourning black, opening an antique armoire and playing with visiting children. Andrew Glass feels closer to the rough Pioneer rooms, where women report tugs and whispers. The name Ida appears on spirit boxes with eerie timing, matching a death recorded in 1946. Even a self-proclaimed skeptic from CNN Travel walked away unsettled, pulled from laughter to goosebumps as the gear flashed in sync with sharp, relevant answers. We bring curiosity and care to the hunt—cross-checking stories, watching for relevance, and letting the location set the pace. McRaven isn't a jump-scare factory; it's a living archive where verifiable history and personal hauntings intersect. If you love paranormal investigation, Southern architecture, or Civil War history, you'll find a rare convergence here that rewards open minds and good questions. Press play, then tell us: did the armoire convincing you tip the scale, or did the balcony woman do it?If you enjoyed this deep dive, follow the show, share it with a curious friend, and leave a review telling us what moment hooked you most.Thank you for listening to the Paranormal Peeps Podcast. Today we had the honor of welcoming three powerhouse guests from Lazard for an engaging discussion at the intersection of geopolitics, global security, and energy markets. Joining us were Admiral Bill McRaven, Retired Four-Star Admiral in the U.S. Navy and Senior Advisor at Lazard, Theodore Bunzel, Head of Lazard Geopolitical Advisory, and George Bilicic, Vice Chairman and Global Head of Power, Energy and Infrastructure. Bill is a Professor of National Security at the University of Texas Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs and previously served as Chancellor of the University of Texas System. During his military career, he commanded special operations forces at every level and led U.S. Special Operations Command. He oversaw the missions to capture both Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein. He joined Lazard as a Senior Advisor in 2021. Teddy has spent his career at the intersection of international political and economic affairs and financial services. He joined Lazard from BlackRock and also serves as a Non-Resident Fellow at the Center on Global Energy Policy. George Bilicic previously led Lazard's Midwest Advisory Business and has over 20 years of experience at Lazard in the investment banking business. His prior roles include senior positions at Cravath, Merrill Lynch, KKR, and Sempra Energy. Our conversation began with Bill's insights into the situation in Iran and the broader Middle East, including what we are learning four days in, the difference between a more “surgical” campaign and a broader strike strategy, and the ways Tehran may try to expand the conflict and prolong it. Bill shares his assessment of the military operation so far, why Iran's missile and drone response was expected, what surprised him tactically, how decentralizing command and control complicates targeting, and why regime change is far more complex than simply removing leadership. We explore the risks around the Strait of Hormuz, the realities of stockpiles and logistics, the strain of sustained deployments, and what seamless U.S.-Israel military coordination signals to China and Russia as they assess this new geopolitical map. George outlines what this volatility is doing in boardrooms around the world, from capital allocation and cost of capital to supply chain realignment, tariff sensitivity, and the growing premium on reliable 24/7 power. Teddy explains how Lazard integrates real-time geopolitical analysis into client strategy, why regulatory decision-making is becoming more discretionary, how European leaders are grappling with structural energy vulnerability and higher costs, how allies and European boardrooms are reassessing U.S. reliability, and why “trusted supply” is becoming central to LNG contracting and long-term energy security. We end by looking at the uncertain path forward, including the limits of prediction, the sustainability of current operations, and how geopolitics is increasingly embedded in corporate decision-making. Thank you to Bill, Teddy, and George for the insightful and timely discussion. Mike Bradley started off by noting that this week's macro conversation has been dominated by U.S. military strikes against Iran and the potential short- and intermediate-term market fallout. In rates, the 10-year Treasury yield moved up to 4.06% (up 12 bps), while some perceived safe havens like gold and silver were ironically lower on the week. In crude, WTI spiked Tuesday to roughly $78/bbl before pulling back to around $74/bbl, amid reports that the Strait of Hormuz was effectively shut—halting approximately 15 mmbpd of oil shipments. Oil retraced from intraday highs as markets focused on President Trump proposing financial security and military escorts for tankers in and out of the Gulf, rather than an SPR release. Refined products moved sharply higher, with wholesale diesel, gasoline, and heating oil up roughly 20% this week. Globally, Qatari LNG was shut down for the first time in 30+ years, help

Work–life balance sounds responsible. Admiral William (Bill) McRaven thinks it's misleading at best—and often harmful. In our special 500th episode of The Leadership Podcast, McRaven strips away the language leaders hide behind and replaces it with judgment, clarity, and responsibility. Instead of chasing balance, he offers a far more useful distinction: knowing which commitments are crystal balls and which are rubber balls. Some things can be dropped and recovered. Others, once broken, are gone for good. Leadership starts with knowing the difference. He's equally direct about what hasn't changed. Despite endless debate about generations, McRaven argues that the fundamentals remain stubbornly constant. People still respond to integrity. They still want leaders who work hard, stay humble, and put service ahead of ego—whether they're wearing a uniform, sitting in a classroom, or working in a corporate office. McRaven also calls out one of the most common leadership evasions: "empowerment" without clarity. Trusting people doesn't mean leaving them guessing. When expectations are vague, accountability collapses. He explains the real difference between micromanaging and leading—making sure everyone understands what good actually looks like. One of the most enduring lessons in the conversation comes from a command master chief who gave him a four-part standard that guided his entire career: Learn the business Be a good teammate Be a good person Work harder than everyone else No slogans. No shortcuts. He also reflects on the quiet dangers of overconfidence—how believing your plan is airtight can blind you to obvious risks—and why experienced advisors matter more than raw intelligence. This episode is a reminder that leadership isn't about trends or terminology. It's about judgment, responsibility, and doing the hard, unglamorous things well—consistently, and without excuses. Watch this Episode on YouTube | Admiral Bill McRaven on The Leadership Myths We Keep Getting Wrong https://bit.ly/TLP-500 Key Takeaways [04:11] McRaven reveals he's a journalism major who writes poetry. [05:00] McRaven explains pressure reveals who leaders really are versus who they thought they'd be. [07:06] McRaven discusses how perfectionist leaders struggle when plans fail while adaptable "C students" often outperform. [09:06] McRaven emphasizes humility and surrounding yourself with people who'll tell you when your plan is stupid. [12:43] McRaven explains you never have perfect clarity, so rely on experienced team members who've seen similar situations. [14:44] McRaven explains why every great flag officer he knows is steeped in history and human context. [18:30] McRaven shares the command master chief's formula: learn the business, be a good teammate, be a good person, work hard. [21:58] McRaven dismantles the myth that millennials need different leadership—timeless fundamentals work across all generations. [24:11] McRaven emphasizes universal principles: be polite, be gracious, don't be the center of attention. [27:18] McRaven admits his Iraq failures with sleep and Red Bulls, then shares the lesson: six hours sleep, eat right, never look stressed. [31:33] McRaven explains combat tours leave little reading time, but staff tours are when leaders prepare by studying. [34:05] McRaven shares his biggest reversal: he preached "no work-life balance" until learning the crystal ball analogy. [41:07] McRaven explains technology always changes but leadership fundamentals stay constant: understand people and resources. [44:11] McRaven dismantles "empowerment"—leaders must first set clear expectations before backing off. [49:21] And remember..."Let no one ever say we dream too small" - Father John Jenkins Quotable Quotes "Pressure is what really shows who we are. When you do it repeatedly, you begin to overcome a lot of those shortfalls and you become a better leader." "You better have a little swagger... But don't ever mistake swagger and confidence. If you aren't humble again, that swagger will turn into hubris, and that will get you into trouble." "Hard work makes up for a lot of shortfalls. You don't have to be talented, you don't have to be overly smart, you don't have to do anything. You just have to work hard." "Some of those balls are crystal balls. And if you drop the crystal balls, they're going to shatter and you're never going to be able to pick them up again. You need to know the difference between the rubber balls and the crystal balls." "Micromanagement is not a dirty word. You don't want to spend your whole time micromanaging, but you have to make sure the rank and file that are working for you know what your expectations are." "If you think that you are the smartest man or woman in the room, if you think that your plan is going to outpace the enemies, or if you just think as a corporate leader that you have figured out all the ins and outs of the issue you're dealing with, you're going to be humbled pretty quickly." "The fundamentals of leadership did not change. The faculty, the students, the university presidents, the people I worked for, they expected me to be a good leader. I knew how to lead." "If you want to be good at what you do, there is no work-life balance. The fact of the matter is, something's going to have to be sacrificed because if you want to be good at what you do, you are going to have to come in early, you are going to have to work hard, you're going to miss anniversaries." "Your responsibility as a leader is to make sure the men and women working for you are the best they can be... You have to have trained them well, you provided them the resources." "Leadership is rarely a solo effort. It's a team sport. And you better have a good team surrounding you so you can find out where your shortfalls are and make sure, again, you don't walk into a minefield." Welcome to a brand new series here on the podcast I'm calling "On Becoming: The Art and Craft of Personal Storytelling." In this series, we'll dig deep into college essays from past students, talking about why we love them and how they came to be.  For me, this title "On Becoming" speaks not just to the craft of writing (how a story came to be), but to what I believe the personal statement is at its best: a record of becoming… the beautiful, sometimes messy process of witnessing someone learn to better understand themselves, articulate their values, and claim their voice in the world. Whether you're a student, parent, educator, or just someone who loves great stories, we hope there's something here for you. In our first episode, I sit down with Amanda McRaven, a dear friend and one of my first hires at College Essay Guy. In this episode, we dig into: Two of our favorite essays from former students A little behind the scenes of how they came to be, and The techniques that helped these stories reveal truths about the students who wrote them.  Amanda McRaven is an artist, teacher, theater director, and storyteller living in the Pacific Northwest. She's a veteran educator and writer with over 15 years of experience coaching students through the college essay process. But what really sets Amanda apart is her approach. She helps students mine their lives for meaning—to find the gold in seemingly ordinary moments, and to connect the dots between experiences in ways that feel alive, honest, and deeply human.  We hope you enjoy!   Play-by-Play: 3:20 – Something these two essays have in common 4:32 – How does Amanda help students find creative ways to tell their stories?  5:50 – What did early drafts of the "My Desk" essay look like?  6:45 – Amanda and Ethan analyze the intro paragraph of the "My Desk" essay   13:24 – Analysis of paragraph 2 – Laptop 19:30 – Analysis of paragraph 3 – Stack of books 26:11 – Analysis of paragraph 4 – Bead Bracelet 31:59 – Analysis of the final paragraph – Conclusion  34:49 – Ethan introduces the "Magic" essay 41:30 – What did the student's writing process look like for the "Magic" essay?  47:55 – How does the author incorporate values and extracurricular activities together with the topic?  51:22 – How can students find more uncommon connections or topics to write about in their essays? 56:20 – What can students take away from the "Magic" essay?  58:34 – What does Amanda enjoy most about working with students on essays?  1:00:13 – Closing thoughts    Resources: "My Desk" Essay "Magic" Essay College Essay Essentials  College Essay Guy's Personal Statement Resources College Essay Guy's College Application Hub

Newsletter Marketing Radical: https://marketingradical.substack.com/welcomeNewsletter Negocios con IA: https://negociosconia.substack.com/welcomeLibro "Libertad Financiera" Gratis: https://borjagiron.com/libertadMis Libros: https://borjagiron.com/librosSysteme Gratis: https://borjagiron.com/systemeSysteme 30% dto: https://borjagiron.com/systeme30Manychat Gratis: https://borjagiron.com/manychatMetricool 30 días Gratis Plan Premium (Usa cupón BORJA30): https://borjagiron.com/metricoolNoticias Redes Sociales: https://redessocialeshoy.comNoticias IA: https://inteligenciaartificialhoy.comClub: https://triunfers.comThis content is under Fair Use: Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act in 1976; Allowance is made for "Fair Use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship and research.

In honor of the Memorial Day holiday, we're once again re-airing an interview we did back in 2017 with retired Admiral William “Bill” McRaven. President Donald Trump's multi-front attempt to remake America and the world is meeting with mixed success. His administration has ended the crisis at the border and is aggressively moving against illegal migrants. But elsewhere the picture is murky. The war in Ukraine rages on, the Middle East continues unsettled and above all, his restless back-and-forth on tariffs and international economics is causing profound damage to faith in U.S. economic stability. And some of his actions suggest an authoritarian style inimical to American values.   On this episode of Free Expression, Gerry Baker sits down with Admiral William McRaven, former head of US special operations, to discuss Trump's leadership. McRaven draws on the themes of his new book, "Conquering Crisis: 10 Lessons to Learn Before You Need Them," to assess the first 100 days of Trump's second term, but also the wider challenges of leadership in crisis. He’s known as the military man whose commencement speech about making your bed every day got 100 million views online. But retired Navy Seal Admiral William McRaven shares another lesson just as compelling. During a military operation in the Middle East, McRaven has sadly acknowledged that several members of an innocent family were mistakenly killed. Believing the family was owed a sincere apology, McRaven dared to ask the heartbroken father for forgiveness. “I’m a soldier,” McRaven told him, “but I also have children. I know how difficult this would be for me if this tragedy happened to my children.” The man’s response? He granted McRaven the generous gift of forgiveness. As the man’s surviving son told him, “We accept your apology, and we will have no more hatred in our hearts for you.” The apostle Paul wrote of such generous grace: “As God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience” (Colossians 3:12). He knew that life would test us in various ways, so he instructed believers in the church at Colossae: “Forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you” (v. 13). What enables us to have such compassionate, forgiving hearts? God’s generous love. As Paul concluded, “Over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity” (v. 14).

In honor of the Memorial Day holiday, we're once again re-airing an interview we did back in 2017 with retired Admiral William “Bill” McRaven. Little did McRaven know that his address, which spoke to how students could overcome challenges and change themselves, would become a viral hit with 17 million views online. McRaven was eventually encouraged to expand his commencement speech into a book, Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life…And Maybe the World. Have a money question?
