Perry for a deep dive into the opening chapter of the first Crescent City book, House of Earth and Blood, to find out how and why it works. We analyze this first chapter from both a macro and micro perspective to see what kind of promise it makes to the reader, how the author introduces us to the story world, and to figure out why we care so much about these fictional characters. In the episode, you'll hear us talk about:[03:08] A quick summary of the first chapter of House of Earth and Blood, including our thoughts on why the author started the story here[05:05] A big-picture analysis of the first chapter to see what kind of promise it makes to the reader (this part's really fun because Abigail has NOT read the books, so tune in and hear what she picked up on!)[25:50] What it means to write a story with a steep learning curve—and why understanding your target audience makes a big difference when it comes to creating a fictional world for your story[38:50] A deep-dive into the scene structure within the opening chapter (spoiler alert: the scene continues into chapter two—tune in to hear how we landed here)[47:26] Why it's so important to have “on the surface” excitement and action when planting clues and setting things up in your opening chaptersWhether you're writing fantasy, romantasy, or any kind of story that requires world-building, this episode will change how you look at your opening chapter. Plus, you'll get a fantastic peek at how Sarah J. Maas wrote another bestselling fantasy series (so you can do the same when writing your own novel).
Do you love historical romance? Do you want to learn what makes a first chapter capture a reader's (and literary agent's!) attention? Then you need today's episode. In today's episode, book coach and developmental editor Savannah Gilbo returns for a deep dive into the uber-popular, time-traveling romance, OUTLANDER by Diana Gabaldon. This conversation is jam-packed with insightful tips on how to pull readers into your story with world-building, set ups, and memorable, interesting characters without slowing the pace. Some other topics Savannah and I explore include: How to write an intriguing opening (and scenes) with what can sometimes feel like less intense stakes How many scenes are in this first chapter, and why each models a well-structured scene How to plant set ups and share meaningful backstory without dragging down the pace Plus, more! By the time you finish this episode, you'll know how to identify and answer some important questions that first chapters need in order to set up reader expectations. You'll also take away a handful of tools that you can use to tighten and polish well-structured scenes. So pick up a notebook and get ready to learn! P.S. Happy Valentine's Day! Romance, historical fiction & fantasy writers—tune in to learn how the opening pages of Outlander hook readers into the story. In this listener-voted episode, I team up with developmental editor and book coach Abigail K. Perry to analyze the opening chapter of Diana Gabaldon's genre-defying masterpiece, Outlander, on a macro and micro level. And truth be told, this might be one of our most challenging chapter analyses yet, but you'll learn exactly what makes these opening pages super engaging so you can apply it to your own writing. Here's what we cover:[07:13] An Outlander chapter summary that reveals how Gabaldon masterfully sets up relationship tension and an interesting open loop that becomes hugely important later.[13:05] A chapter one macro analysis using the seven questions from Paula Munier's book, The Writer's Guide To Beginnings, to break down what makes this opening so spot-on (from genre to character to stakes).[39:50] How Gabaldon built Outlander's plot around three major story peaks to keep readers glued to the page. (I found this gem on her website and had to share it with you.)[43:01] A microanalysis of the two scenes within the first chapter using the "5 Commandments of Storytelling" from Shawn Coyn's book, The Story Grid—to learn how to make your quiet moments as compelling as the action-packed ones.[56:33] A discussion on how to write tricky relationship moments and emotional turning points in a way that feels natural and not forced. Whether you're writing historical fantasy, time travel romance, historical romance, or any genre-bending story, you'll get a fantastic overview of how Diana Gabaldon crafted an opening chapter that launched a global phenomenon (so you can do the same for your own novel). Tune in now.

In this special, in between seasons, compilation, we mash together our previous four episodes about the last book of the New Testament. The finest final chapter. The most metal maelstrom of mayhem and madness. The epilogue to end all epilogues. The volume of vengeful violence that is, the Book of Revelation! Volume 1 contains the previously released episodes,Book of Revelation 00 Prologue of the EpilogueBook of Revelation 01 First Chapter of the Final ChapterBook of Revelation 02 Where Satan DwellsBook of Revelation 03 I Will Come In To Him Many apologists, theologians, academics, historians and scholars have pondered the inclusion of this Lovecraftian hallucination in the final draft of the Chri$tian Bible. We will look at the various theories as they come up. The prologue includes cameo appearances from, The Bible, the Rapture, John of Patmos, Roman Emperors Domitian, Vespasian, Titus, Nero and Caligula. We'll also meet Epaphroditus, Eusebius, Josephus and D.H. Lawrence. Did you know you are blessed just to read it or hear it read? Did you now this book is a cornerstone of conspiracy theories like Flat Earth Theory and the Holy Trinity? Does it allude to the Holy Ghost or the Archangels? What's the deal with John and the number seven? Will we see the saviour coming in the clouds? Will he or won't he have a two edged sword in his mouth? Will he sound like a fart or diarrhoea? Did you know it gives you a description including but not limited to Christ's breasts? And why does John mansplain away his poetic metaphors? I chapter two, John will explain to the church of Ephesus just how much the ultimate creator god of the entire universe is upset about a wife swapping cult of Nicolaitanes. John explains quantum physics to the church in Smyrna and proves once and for all Jesus is Schrodinger's Cat.John doxes Satan's home in Pergamon. And among the church in Thyatira, we finally meet, Jezebel! And she does not disappoint. She repented not!Is this book prophecy of a future still to come?Is this book a coded message of rebellion for the early Chri$tian freedom fighters in their struggle with the Roman Empire? Is this book xenophobic propaganda to stop Hellenising?Who cares? The other day, I heard Mark Hurwitz say that "the beginning of the book (exposition is the literary term) is a bit like a social contract between the reader and the writer. This got me thinking about the different critique groups and contests that we have that focus solely on the beginning phrases of our books. Are they helpful? I'm of the opinion that they aren't.So today we are going through a pile of books to see how the beginnings stand up to being social contracts between the writer and the reader.Books I read from today:Caraval by Stephanie GarberThe Violin Conspiracy by Brendan SlocumbThe Fault in Our Stars by John Green99 Percent Mine by Sally ThorneAnxious People by Fredrick BackmanShadow of the Dragon by Tom ClancyThe Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins ReidThe Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather MorrisBended Loyalty is up for PREORDER! https://books.katcaldwell.com/loyaltyGet Bended Dream here: https://books.katcaldwell.com/bended-prequel Like Substack? Unveiling the First Chapter of James Gunn's DCU: "Creature Commandos" As the DC Universe (DCU) embarks on a new era under the visionary leadership of James Gunn, fans are eagerly anticipating the release of "Creature Commandos," the first project in this exciting new chapter. Set to stream on HBO Max in December 2024, this animated series promises to deliver a unique blend of action, adventure, and supernatural elements that will captivate audiences. "Creature Commandos" follows a black ops team of monsters assembled by Amanda Waller, featuring a diverse cast of characters including a werewolf, a vampire, Frankenstein's monster, and a gorgon . This eclectic group of military superhumans is tasked with taking on dangerous missions that no ordinary team could handle. The series is based on the comic book series first introduced in "Weird War Tales" #93 in November 1980 . One of the standout aspects of "Creature Commandos" is the involvement of Sean Gunn, the talented brother of James Gunn. Sean lends his voice to multiple characters in the show, including G.I. Robot, a military android with a mission to eliminate Nazis . His performance adds depth and personality to the animated series, bringing these unique characters to life in a way that only he can. We were fortunate enough to have Sean Gunn join us on our podcast, where he shared some fascinating behind-the-scenes details about the making of "Creature Commandos." During the interview, Sean discussed the creative process, the challenges of voicing multiple characters, and the excitement of being part of his brother's groundbreaking project. His insights provided a deeper understanding of the show's development and the passion that drives the Gunn brothers' work. James Gunn, who serves as the showrunner and writer for "Creature Commandos," has crafted a narrative that is both thrilling and thought-provoking . The series is part of the DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, setting the stage for future projects that will expand this new universe. With a star-studded cast that includes Steve Agee, Maria Bakalova, Anya Chalotra, Zoë Chao, Frank Grillo, David Harbour, Alan Tudyk, Indira Varma, and Viola Davis, "Creature Commandos" is poised to be a must-watch series for fans of the DCU . It's my birthday! I know I'm incredibly blessed… and that the abundance I have today is the result of some hard lessons I learned a few birthdays ago. Today, I want to share the most important gift I ever received — the lesson that took me from struggling artist to thriving business owner. In this episode, I share the story of how my life and business transformed into the incredible reality I have today. If I could give every jewelry designer a gift, this lesson would be it. So tune in to hear me read the first chapter of my book, The Desired Brand Effect, to hear about: …The moment in my first business when I realized I had NO money left over after delivering a $100,000 order (and what happened next)... …The book that blew my mind about the problems in my business and helped me see how to transform my maker mindset to become the leader of my business… …Why becoming the chief visionary officer (CVO) of your business can help you get great at turning your dreams into reality instead of continuing as a maker struggling to bring your vision to life… …And how I went from being a broke designer to having my work stocked in over 350 stores around the world (with celebrities like Halle Berry and Charlize Theron loving on my work). If you've been struggling to make a sustainable living from your jewelry designs, if you're burned out, scared of your numbers or just know it's time to take your business to the next level, this one's for you. And if you can find the courage to act on what you hear, by the time your own birthday rolls around next year, maybe you'll be telling an incredible transformation story of your own. Listen to episode #474 of Thrive by Design to get your all-access pass to It's My Birthday! A Dramatic Reading of the First Chapter of My Book. The greatest birthday gift you could give me today is to go and listen to this episode. My life's purpose is to help creatives like you to start thriving in their art, and it truly lights me up to hear it when someone starts making a change after hearing this story. xo, Tracy Here are the resources mentioned in the show: The E-Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber Buy My Book: The Desired Brand Effect Are you enjoying the podcast?
