For this first podcast of the month, Arthur's buddy Anna (@banananna024/@formergleek) is circling back around for a review and recap of To All the Boys I've Loved Before, the 2018 Netflix rom-com whose fake-dating scheme that Lara Jean Song Covey and Peter Kavinsky cook up is based on the 2014 YA romance novel of the same name by Jenny Han. Directed by Susan Johnson, To All the Boys I've Loved Before stars Lana Condor, Noah Centineo, Israel Broussard, Madeleine Arthur, Janel Parrish, Anna Cathcart, Emilija Baranac, John Corbett, Trezzo Mahoro, and Andrew Bachelor. This week, Tommy is joined by actress Anna Cathcart, star of the #1 smash-hit series XO, Kitty on Netflix. The series has taken over the world, first appearing in Netflix’s Top 10 in over 90 countries when it debuted. Jenny Han is a literary powerhouse and New York Times bestselling author of the “To All the Boys I've Loved Before” series and “The Summer I Turned Pretty” series. She is also the creator and co-showrunner of The Summer I Turned Pretty television series. Jenny sat down with Jenna Bush Hager to chat about how she built a media empire that showcases diverse characters and young women coming into their own. She opens up about how she made the leap from writer to showrunner, what it's been like to have her books adapted and why coming of age stories resonate with audiences of all ages.
For more than a decade, a life-affirming spell seems to enchant every audience the band plays to. It's why THE STRIKE have been booked for weeks-long residencies from Dubai (at the behest of music legend Quincy Jones) to China (at the massive Qingdao Beer Festival). Back home, they have an appeal that's lured some fans to travel across continents to see them, and others to get Strike-themed tattoos. Music supervisors have followed in kind, using their songs on Dancing With the Stars, America's Got Talent, and Netflix's To All The Boys I've Loved Before. Which is to say: If the name The Strike doesn't ring a bell, there's a good chance you've actually heard their music.None of this good fortune is lost on the L.A.-based group, which also includes drummer Jay Tibbitts and singer Chris Crabb. And this is why their third album, A Dream Through Open Eyes (out October 4th, Nettwerk), was created with the goal of capturing this phenomenon of intoxicating folks wherever they go. Celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with books by AAPI authors! It's one of the prompts on the Winter-Spring 2024 Books & Bites Bingo reading challenge. Our suggestions include an action-packed adventure tale, a YA romance, and a comic but realistic immigration story. Michael's PickThe Thousand Crimes of Ming Tsu by Tom Lin begins with Ming Tsu traversing the salt flats of the Utah Territory, making his way to a Union Pacific camp to kill a man. The past couple years, Ming Tsu had been serving his sentence laboring for the railroad, all because he made the mistake of falling in love and marrying the daughter of a railroad baron. This is an action-packed, cinematic adventure tale full of brawls, gunfights, showdowns, betrayal, and ambushes. It also gives a peek at the xenophobia and racism experienced in the Old West by Chinese immigrants and marginalized folks. Pairing: Pit Beans is a hearty dish that's perfect for any cowboy.Jacqueline's PickEmergency Contact by Mary H.K. Choi is about two young people, Penny and Sam, whose awkward meeting results in them exchanging numbers and promising to be each other's emergency contacts because neither of them has a reliable parent. Their friendship grows via text as they find themselves texting one another non-stop.Fans of Jenny Han's To All the Boys I've Loved Before will enjoy this novel. Both novels have fresh Asian American voices and similar story arcs.Pairing: A flat white espresso.Carrie's PickIn The Chinese Groove by Kathryn Ma, main character Shelley is an 18 year old Chinese student eager to seek his fortune in the United States, where he plans to win back his girlfriend by becoming a famous poet. His "foolproof plan" hits some snags as soon as his flight lands in San Francisco.Though the characters, including Shelley, are all grieving, his comic and somewhat satirical voice keep the tone hopeful. Fans of The Wangs vs. the World will appreciate this character-driven and intricately plotted book.Pairing: Steamed Sea Bass with Ginger and Spring Onion, a recipe from Every Grain of Rice: Simple Chinese Home Cooking by Fuschia Dunlop.
In some other universe this description doesn't exist, or does it? Well regardless were here to talk about the movie To Every You I've Loved Before.

Join us for the pilot episode of our new podcast, "To All The Cars I've Loved Before," while Devin Henderson takes us on a trip back to rural Illinois where he first learned to drive stick shift in the parking lot of the car dealer with his dad for the purchase of his 1998 Mazda 626. This car survived many years, 250k+ miles, and a move to Northern Virginia.Devin is also kind to tell us about a few other cars of significance including his most recent purchase of a Cadillac Escalade V with a factory tuned exhaust that can set off alarms in a parking garage at will.Wait till he chats about his Backdraft Racing Cobra replica.
In episode 3 of "To All The Cars I've Loved Before," Tim Cokeley shares the stories of his first car, a 1972 Chevrolet Monte Carlo which was driven by a little lady to church on Sundays. Tim tells us how he had the fortune to acquire his second car from his sister, a 1979 Plymouth Horizon TC3, which required a new clutch to make it roadworthy. Being an early front wheel drive car required pulling the engine, so Tim resorted to Chilton's Car Repair manuals to figure it out - remember this was a time before the Internet and YouTube. He rounds out the trio with an 1991 Isuzu Trooper II, wishing he had never parted ways with and shares how he dealt with a bad ignition switch using a trick inspired by his own father.
