In his latest book, Armed Citizens: The Road from Ancient Rome to the Second Amendment​,  Dr. Noah Shusterman posits how the question isn't the existence of the right to bear arms, but rather, about determining the specific individuals or groups entitled to bear arms. The Judicial Overhaul seemed to be vague about some issues that Israel was and still is facing, such as the Palestinian conflict. Some would say that the time when Israeli society was so divided between Judicial overhaul protestors and Judicial Reform supporters was the right time for Palestinians to try and gain leverage in the International arena. Even though the past few months were the bloodiest in a long time, with 34 Israelis and more than 100 Palestinians dead since January 1st, 2023, the West Bank has been mostly quiet. Is that so? Unwind by Neal Shusterman was one of the first dystopian books I ever read. However, unlike a lot of other books of the genre I've read since, it has stuck with me. Every once in a while, one particular line of dialogue, or scene, or subject, comes to my mind, and leaves me thinking. That's what I look for in my dystopian science fiction; something to ponder when I'm done with it. Unwind takes place years after a war in America between pro-life, and pro-choice, and thus being a dystopian, science fiction, book targeted at teenagers, the compromise they come to is the Bill of Life. It reads as follows:  “that human life may not be touched from the moment of conception until a child reaches the age of thirteen. However, between the ages of thirteen and eighteen, a parent may choose to retroactively ‘abort' a child .. on the condition that the child's life doesn't ‘technically' end. The process by which a child is both terminated and yet kept alive is called ‘unwinding.' Unwinding is now a common, and accepted practice in society”.” (Shusterman, N. Unwind. pg, 1. 2007). The story follows three teens designated for unwinding: Connor, who gets into fights at school and with his parents, Risa, a ward of the state who has been declared not talented enough to keep alive, and Levi, a Tithe, someone born and praised to be unwound in the name of religion. At the beginning of the books, they cross paths, managing to escape their fate, and become AWALs. However, if they are caught before they turn 18, they will be unwound. Shusterman writes in the third-person limited perspective, transitioning primarily between the three main characters, though there are chapters that follow different characters every once in a while, when the story calls for it. Though there is a lot of jumping around, Neal does a great job of putting the reader in the mindset of the character that is currently being followed, and making use of their point of view. All three of the main characters bring a unique perspective on the story, as they all have  backgrounds, and thus different perspectives on life as well as skills and knowledge. It is very entertaining and interesting having all of them interact with one another. Along with the character writing, I haven't forgotten so world that he built here. Though most Sci-fi material take place in the very distant future, with the environment possibly much more advanced than our own, Unwind does something a little different.  Wht I love about the world building in the Unwind series, is that, because society has concentrated more on medical advancement, rather than technological, most of society is pretty much as in real life. There are mentions of old music devices and movies in an antique shop, to show that, even though it is the future, it is not far enough where society doesn't know what the technology of today is. One of my favorite descriptions of the environment that adds to the  slight futuristic time period, takes place in an antique shop.'“The shop has things from perhaps every point in American history. A display of iPods and other little gadgets from his grandfather's time cover an old chrome-rimmed dinner table. An old movie plays on an antique plasma-screen TV. The movie shows a crazy vision of a future that never came, with flying cars and a white-haired scientist" (Shusterman, N. Unwind. pg, 91. 2007). This description has stuck with me since I read the book years ago. I love how Neal manages to describe a new place, build on the world, and make a joke all in one paragraph. I also appreciate that, again, you get a vague idea of how far in the future the book takes place, without it actually giving a specific year, which makes it easier to suspend your disbelief. However, with how well the world is built up, that would be difficult not to do. It's not something I believe a reader should be consciously aware of when reading, but, as I've read this book more than once, I did.

Season five of our podcast continues with another presentation from our 2020 annual conference: ‘Engaged Phenomenology' Online. This episode features a presentation from Maria-Nefeli Panetsos, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.   ABSTRACT: When talking about Phenomenology we usually think about only the traditional studies of the subject's perception of its surrounding phenomena. However, when turning the point of view towards the body, except the first steps done by Merleau-Ponty, Philosophy remains under some limitations of the orthological perception of reality. I found interesting the fact that in the history of Philosophy there is a clear absence towards the art of Dance, as the main corporeal - and for Hegel ‘primitive' and ‘uncivilized' - form of art which has no place in the fine art hierarchy. Looking for the reasons why this may have happened, I see that there always have been the fear of the body as a source of knowledge, as it has been always seen as unreliable filter of the human perception. However dance helps to see how the process of sensing and understanding one's subjectivity and may enrich and change the perspective of one's identity. I would like to merge the concept of the dancer with the phenomenological existential subject, as an example of conscious and aware subject that actively experiences its existence, transcendental self and its physicality into the intersubjective space where it lives. Through dance, borders and ‘merleaupontian' fleshes can be managed in a conscious way, essentially focusing on one's subjectivity and its relationship with time, space, other objects and subjects. As Prof. Shusterman already proposes in his Somaesthetics, the philosophical research can be amplified in the embodied experience of other corporeal activities that usually are not taken into consideration as explanatory for the human existence. An involved, inclusive phenomenological process, will definitely find further ways to sense and understand the aspects of the subject's condition, as the self and identity are always related and influenced by the corporeal dimension of the human.   BIO: My name is Maria-Nefeli Panetsos, born in Madrid (Spain), student of the Italian School of Madrid, and recent graduate student of the faculty of Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, where I specialised in Philosophy and my main fields of interest have been Phenomenology, Existentialism and Aesthetics. Since 2016 I started personal research focusing on the Identity of Dance and its Aesthetics, and later I continue finding connections with Philosophy of the Body and other applied phenomenological and existentialist perspective of Philosophy. Neal Shusterman deals in dark fictional visions — but he never forgets to give readers a reason to hope. His Unwind dystology centered on a dystopia in which children can be retroactively aborted, or "unwound," and harvested for their organs. In his ongoing Scythe series, death by disease or accident have been rendered obsolete, and mortality is in the hands of an elite group of professional killers known as scythes. He won the 2015 National Book Award for Challenger Deep, in which a young man's descent into mental illness is rendered as a surreal sea journey into the depths of the Marianas Trench. Now in his latest novel, Dry, Neal has paired up with son Jarrod Shusterman to tell the story of a California drought turned deadly. The two of them joined us to talk about water zombies, what to do when a great idea comes to you when you're driving, and why great writing is best done on a boat.  And yep, there's a lightning round.

We are joined by the philosopher Richard Shusterman, the professor of philosophy at Florida Atlantic University. He's the author of several books including Practicing Philosophy: Pragmatism and the Philosophical Life, Body Consciousness and Thinking through the Body. He's also travelled widely and is arguably something of a polymath having held appointments in other disciplines in the humanities. For example, he taught comparative literature in Israel , he's been the Visiting Research Professor in Aesthetics in Hiroshima, Japan and he was an associate of the École des Hautes Études in Sciences Sociales in Paris. He's also a professional practitioner of the Feldenkrais method and he's perhaps most known for his contributions to aesthetics and the emerging field of somaesthetics and this is what we're going to be talking about today.
