In this episode, Tom and Chris discuss ongoing protesting over social injustice. This constant bombardment of negativity is taking its toll on First-Responders and they are feeling it. Some interesting questions came up during our discussion:Do you think the old mantra regarding compliance vs non-compliance is still true today? Meaning people when facing LE should automatically comply, or else that means they are going to fight/resist/escape. Is it THAT simple? Or should we consider that each person reacts based on their own experiences? Do you think either ALL cops are good/safe? Or is it possible that many are good/safe, but some are not? What about protesters? Do you think it's dangerous to paint people with such broad brushes? Doesn't that remove the human element altogether? Can you listen to someone intently while defending yourself against someone who you feel insulted you? Do you think this contributes to the polarization we see today? All of us could use a good dose of perspective once in a while to keep ourselves grounded in reality. We should treat each other with kindness, compassion, and respect. For all of the PEER Support people out there, I encourage you to attend an upcoming webinar by RESPONDER HEALTH (SAFE CALL NOW) on 9/9/20 at 10am (Central time). In this episode, Tom and Chris discuss the role of First Responders in Crisis Intervention. They discuss what it means to be in Crisis and the fact that a Crisis state is the perception of the person experiencing it. It is important to acknowledge the person's feelings and strive to understand what they are going through.Tom asked about using Police Crisis Negotiators for current issues around the country with protesters. Chris gave his opinion that based on the current climate, it may be difficult for police negotiators to be objective due to anti-police sentiment. This would make it very difficult for them to be effective.Tom and Chris discussed the idea of law enforcement as a whole shifting towards a more empathetic approach at a patrol level. In this episode, Tom and Chris talk about the emotional toll the protests (mainly the agitators) have taken on our Law Enforcement Officers. In these tough times, it's important to remember that you are appreciated for the work good work that you do on a daily basis. The anti-police sentiment that is out there today is not directed at you as individuals, but the profession you represent. The labels do not reflect upon you as a person and it is very important to remember that.Tom and Chris suggested the CHAZ leadership and the Seattle leadership sit down and figure it out! Work together to come to some sort of solution to end the camp-out.With the opening of the country, many states are seeing a rise in Corona Virus cases, and Nevada is no different. Tom and Chris discuss the economic and social impact of Corona Virus on the Las Vegas area. This also impacts the way policing is done. Recently, the Las Vegas Metropolitan PD welcomed a new class of recruits with a "virtual" graduation. It was held outside with only the new officers, the Academy Staff, and the Sheriff in attendance. No badge pinning by loved ones, no family photos, etc. The economic impact is requiring layoffs, changes in personnel allocations, and restructuring of some units in Public Safety. The act of policing is also changing to accommodate the social distancing guidelines in place. All of these things are adding to the cumulative stress of our First Responders. This, added with the stress on families and friends, makes things much more difficult. How do we deal with all of this.Experts say that you should follow these guidelines (there are lots more):Get plenty of sleepLimit Alcohol intakeKeep a journal by your bedGive yourself 10 minutes/day to do nothingBottom line, be aware of your own feelings and seek help when you need it. There is no shame in asking for help. Please reach out for it!If you know of someone interested in Crisis Negotiation training, go to www.desert.training for a list of upcoming webinars.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/facesbehindthebadge)

In this episode, Tom and Chris discuss the horrible reality that is Police Suicide. Reports state that in 2019, 228 Officers took their own lives. Some states are taking large steps to reduce if not eliminate this epidemic.Tom and Chris discuss the influence of the public perception of policing as well as the stress related to policing as a career. Some studies suggest Officers witness approximately 188 critical incidents (homicide, child abuse, automobile fatalities, etc) during their careers. There is a stigma associated with Police Suicide (and suicide in general) that makes it hard to reach out for help. Asking for help is seen as a sign of weakness. The stigma harshly judges us because we are suppose to "suck it up" and not let anything get to us. This is just not realistic! There has been a large increase in Peer Support programs and there seems to be a shift in mindset and perception of post traumatic stress.
