What are the 3 factors highly increasing your teen's risk of suicide? Is my child at risk?Do I really know my child? Do I know how my child sees themselves?Does my child really feel seen and like they belong here? In this episode, Dr. Skinner shares how suicidal thoughts are actually much more common than we might believe, noting that most people have momentarily entertained the thought. However, those at risk are typically individuals who align with these 3 factors:1. I'm impulsive, 2. I feel I am in a crisis, 3. I have access.Hence, the unusually high risk of teen suicide.Studies show access to a gun or a form of poisoning likely through medical pills or substances, HIGHLY increases chances of a teen attempting suicide. Also, most teens attempt suicide under an hour of deciding. Our discussion also highlights the role we have as parents of creating and sustaining a warm home environment, drawing on the Grant Study to show how loving, deeply communicative relationships in childhood lead to longterm resilience, safety and belonging. The concept of "accompaniment" is introduced, illustrating how attuned parenting help children feel known and safe along their years of tender growth. Send us a textlove doves, i was driving on the highway on the way to tamale night when a large rock out of nowhere smashed thru my windshield, shattered the glass, and impacted the passenger side seat, which was thankfully empty. it was so amazingly sudden and loud omg. this felt like a message from Spirit for me to remember always how precious and delicate Life is. Obviously I'm so very thankful nobody was hurt and I'm okay, no glass wounds or anything, I feel very lucky honestly. a close call. so, i just felt compelled to jump on the mic and put some words out about never taking any moment for granted during this sacred gift of Life, as hard and stressful and unfair and frustrating and crazy-making as it is. We always have reasons to keep doing our best and being our best for the people around us, and especially to the people who are good to us and just with us. little acts of kindness and generosity go a long way. if you struggle with feelings of hopelessness sometimes, you are not alone. Make a habit of writing a list of things - anything - you're thankful for at the end of each day. these are the sacred jewels of meaning that propel us out of bed each morning, and which launch us into the day with zest, presence, purpose and readiness: to be, to enjoy, to experience, to see, to feel, to taste, to touch and to love, and importantly, to allow ourselves to be loved in turn.un amor,lr kerkaww   TRACKLISTChill&Go - Mexican Vibes | Lofi Latino, MexicanoKali Uchis - Hasta Cuando (FAIR USE: Slowed & Verbed)Support the showSupport My Sponsor:Magic Mind Adaptogenic & Nootropic Elixir 20% off at Checkout! This show will never shy away from having the difficult conversations. Thriving mental and physical health is paramount and crucial to survival and sadly, if not addressed, it could lead to a life ending. First responders are three times more likely to die by suicide than the from the job that they do. These numbers don't include the suicide attempts or suicidal ideation of first responders that are suffering and struggling in silence. There are a lot of descriptors that officers apply to themselves such as Fearful, Shame, Unworthy, Useless, Despair and Apathy to Life to name a few. These are all symptoms of depression, which is the ultimate liar. It will tell you that you are a failure when you have actually succeeded. It will make you feel like a burden to others. It will make you feel that others will be better off without you in life. It will tell you that you are alone. Reality: People do count on you. Others do love and respect you. These people will no longer have you there to help them, make them laugh, call you when they are struggling, and no longer to tell you they love you. You are worth so much to so many. Today's episode will pull back the curtain on a first responder that was enveloped by the darkness and lost all hope and wished to leave this world and the people that call him a husband, a father, a sibling, a colleague, and a friend. This is someone who went to the edge of the cliff and had one foot off and then was rescued by a voice to pull him back into this world and remind him that it was not his time and he had much more to give this world. This guest could be your husband, wife, child, friend, coworker, partner on a call or your boss. The darkness is real and can come for us all at any time in our life and sadly there are many who do not hear that voice that calls them from that cliff.   If are struggling, there is help!: Suicide Awareness (smore.com) Call 988 suicide hotline COPLINE: 1-800-COPLINE #suicideawareness #suicideprevention #mentalhealthmatters #reachout #mentalhealth #trauma

RACHEL ZIMMERMAN, an award-winning journalist, is the author of Us, After: A Memoir of Love and Suicide. Her book examines domestic devastation and resurgence, the struggle between public and private selves, life's shifting perspectives, the work of motherhood, and the secrets we keep. She will share how she confronted the unimaginable and discovered the good in what remains. When a state trooper appeared at Rachel Zimmerman's door to report that her husband had jumped to his death off a nearby bridge, she fell to her knees, unable to fully absorb the news. How could the man she'd married, a devoted father and robotics professor at MIT with no history of mental illness, have committed such an act? How would she explain this to her young daughters? And could she have stopped him? A longtime journalist, she probed obsessively, believing answers would help her survive. She interviewed doctors and suicide researchers. She spoke with a man who jumped off the same bridge and lived. She got answers, but not the answer—the answer to the question of why her husband killed himself. And so began years of learning to make peace with not knowing.

In this episode, host Janet Michael sits with Winter Brooks, co-chair of the Stephens City Out of the Darkness Community Walk, a significant event aimed at raising awareness about suicide and supporting affected individuals and communities. Janet highlights that Winter Brooks has been organizing the community walk for 10 years, marking a decade of dedicated efforts. Winter explains the walk's inclusion of various communities, emphasizing that the event brings together people from different areas such as Strasburg, Warren County, and beyond. This year, the focus is on reinforcing the walk as a community event. Throughout the episode, Janet and Winter detail the history and growth of the walk, which initially began with Winter's attendance at the Washington, DC walk and has evolved into a significant local event for Northwestern Virginia. Winter mentions their mission of honoring lost loved ones, providing support, and raising awareness to reduce the stigma surrounding suicide. They also discuss the various symbolic elements of the walk, such as the Honor Beads, each color representing different connections to suicide, and how these elements help participants recognize they are not alone in their grief or struggle. The walk, scheduled for October 12th at Sherando High School, promises an engaging day for attendees. Winter outlines numerous features such as tables with information and resources, a glimmer station, and family-friendly activities including balloon animals and face painting. Teams play a vital role in the event, with many already formed and more welcome to join. Winter explains how forming or joining teams can add to the sense of community and support, highlighting the competitive aspect through recognition of top fundraisers. As a fundraising event, the conversation touches on how donations and sponsorships contribute to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, supporting education and advocacy work locally and nationally. Janet and Winter wrap up discussing logistics and activities planned for the day, including speakers, a choir performance by the Sherando choir, a National Anthem rendition, and an engaging closing ceremony. They emphasize the supportive and uplifting nature of the event, which mixes serious awareness with positive communal engagement. Ep. 63 National Law Enforcement Suicide Awareness Day 9/26 – revisiting my interview from Sept. 2021 with Inspector Steve Hough co-creator of Blue H.E.L.P.To mark the four-year anniversary of my podcast I'm taking a look back and reposting a few episodes from the early days with content and issues that remain relevant today. This is about the tragedy of officer suicide, not just the loss of life, but how that loss of life is regarded. We are all keenly aware of the devastating frequency with which we see reports of yet another officer who has taken his or her own life. For many of you, these losses are not news reports – they are personal and painful. As I said when I aired this interview in 2021, I want to draw attention to this issue and the support that does exist to prevent suicide and do what small part I can to honor those we have lost. So, for National Law Enforcement Suicide Awareness Day on Sept. 26, I'm reposting this interview with Inspector Steve Hough who along with Karen Solomon and Dr. Jeffrey McGill founded Blue H.E.L.P., a non-profit organization committed to honoring the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers who have been lost to suicide and to supporting their families and loved ones. It is the only organization in the country that collects LE suicide data. Blue H.E.L.P. also works to de-stigmatize mental health and job stress issues and connects officers to wellness and treatment programs. Blue H.E.L.P. is the organization that in 2020 designated Sept. 26 as National Law Enforcement Suicide Awareness Day. At Blue H.E.L.P.'s website https://bluehelp.org/ you can find important information on services; stories of family members who have lost their LEO to suicide; the Honor Wall recognizing the service of those officers; and information on what you can do for National Law Enforcement Suicide Awareness Day.Blue Help is part of First Help which extends the same honor and services to all first responders and military veterans lost to suicide. This month, First Help unveiled Heroes Memorial Park in Rockwall, Texas which features the monument they are creating on which the names of all first responders and military veterans lost to suicide will be etched. Here is a link with more information:https://1sthelp.org/memorial-park/And one programming note, this originally aired as I said in 2021 when we were in the midst of the pandemic; Covid for that period was taking more lives than we were losing to suicide.
