(5:42) • Sexually violent predators are people who have committed some type of sex crime. They have been deemed to have some type of mental illness or defect, and there's a belief that they will commit another sex crime. (15:59) • Whenever we sleep – if you're a normal, average healthy sleeper, you should go through various sleep cycles. You should be cycling through light sleep, deep sleep, REM sleep and you're gonna be cycling through these several times a night. (23:18) • REM sleep (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, is most famous for having dreams. (23:44) • Folks who have problems sleeping – there are so many things you can to help yourself. (38:12) • Going to bed at the same time every night and waking up at the same time every morning. This is key. (39:4) • We are inducing our own jet lag when we go from 6am Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, then go down to 9am on Saturday and Sunday. The brain gets very confused.  (43:11) • I have been a psychologist for the FBI for 5 years now, and that entire time I will be helping people with trauma. I'm certified with EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and brain spotting. I love those, but I also help people with sleep. (45:10) • In my work, folks experience things and see things that we should not be asking normal human beings to see. (47:04) • [Marcus] When you're doing your job and you're runnin' and gunnin' - no matter what it is - and it tarts creeping into your dreams, that means your database is full. (50:25) • Taking time to reflect either alone or with someone you trust: How is this impacting me? What's happening? (51:36) • I have a book coming out on sleep coming out on sleep. It's called The Sleep Advantage. (56:02) • If you're really getting good sleep, it can impact your decision-making, and your reaction time. It can make you the best of the best; it can impact your performance. Join Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton as they explore the profound impact law enforcement has on family dynamics and community relationships. Discover the various ways in which officers contribute positively to families, enhancing safety and facilitating healing during and after critical incidents. Learn about the benefits of these interactions and how they extend beyond immediate crisis response to foster long-term community well-being. What You'll Learn: Promoting Safety Education: Officers often provide families with crucial safety education, teaching parents and children how to prevent and respond to emergencies. This proactive approach not only helps prevent accidents and incidents but also fosters a sense of security and preparedness within the family. Crisis Intervention (Affiliate Link): During times of crisis, officers play a key role in stabilizing situations, thereby protecting physical safety and emotional well-being. Their intervention can prevent trauma from escalating, providing a critical buffer that helps families begin the healing process more swiftly. Community Policing Initiatives: Through community policing, officers build trust and foster relationships within neighborhoods. These initiatives often lead to stronger community bonds and a heightened sense of collective responsibility, which can reduce crime and enhance quality of life for families. Supporting Victim Assistance Programs: Law enforcement agencies often connect families to victim assistance programs, which provide essential resources such as counseling, financial aid, and legal assistance. This support is crucial for recovery and can significantly ease the emotional and financial burdens faced by families after a crime. Facilitating Restorative Justice: When appropriate, officers help facilitate restorative justice meetings, which can be profoundly healing for victims, offenders, and the community. These meetings allow for a constructive dialogue, fostering understanding, accountability, and often, a sense of closure that can help families move forward. Join Us: Tune in to "The Thin Blue Line's Family Ties" to understand the critical role law enforcement plays in shaping and supporting family dynamics. Whether you are part of a law enforcement family, involved in community safety, or interested in the social impacts of policing, this episode offers deep insights into the positive transformations that can arise from thoughtful police interaction with communities. In 2013, the 5th edition of the Diagnostic & Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) was released, and for the first time it included Nonsuicidal Self-Injury Disorder as a Condition for Further Study. The behavior is not socially sanctioned (e.g., body piercing, tattooing, part of a religious or cultural ritual) and is not restricted to picking a scab or nail biting. E. The behavior or its consequences cause clinically significant distress or interference in interpersonal, academic, or other important areas of functioning. F. The behavior does not occur exclusively during psychotic episodes, delirium, substance intoxication, or substance withdrawal. In individuals with a neurodevelopmental disorder, the behavior is not part of a pattern of repetitive stereotypies. The behavior is not better explained by another mental disorder or medical condition (e.g., psychotic disorder, autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, Lesch-Nyhan syndrome, stereotypic movement disorder with self-injury, trichotillomania [hair-pulling disorder], excoriation [skin-picking] disorder).

All of my roles: “What services do RCCs provide? Today, there are approximately 1,200 RCCs in our country, each tasked with serving their local communities by providing survivor support services and community education. These centers offer different resources based on community needs and financial resources, but the overarching goals remain the same. For those impacted by sexual violence, RCCs oftentimes offer crisis intervention hotlines, support groups, counseling, legal and medical aids (to accompany survivors to medical exams or law enforcement interactions), as well as referrals to other local or virtual resources. In terms of community outreach, some RCCs provide a form of prevention education, advocacy, and/or prevention training. Crisis Intervention/24 Hour Hotline Perhaps the most uniform service across RCCs, crisis intervention hotlines are intended to provide immediate support in the wake of a crisis. In the aftermath of harm, these hotlines serve as a resource for survivors to talk or learn about legal, medical, or counseling options. These hotlines are typically staffed by victim advocates who have undergone trauma-informed training and who are prepared to listen and assist the caller in a time of crisis. Centers offer free crisis and advocacy services since they are typically funded with federal and/or state dollars. Referral Services RCCs may not always provide all of the services someone may need, but they often have a plethora of resources they can direct people toward. For instance, not all RCCs offer therapy or legal resources, but they may know the best options for people who are searching for these services. Sexual assault coalitions also provide great referral services. Education: Training Employees, Volunteers, and the Community Although the required hours of training for staff varies across states, RCCs often provide the training necessary for their staff and volunteers to equip them to effectively serve survivors of sexual assault. Furthermore, most RCCs conduct outreach to the community and provide trainings such as workshops to local schools or organizations on topics such as consent, workplace sexual harassment, or stalking. Accompaniment Some RCCs have staff available to accompany victims to medical exams or legal consultations such as police interviews or court proceedings. These staffers sometimes accompany victims as a form of support, and sometimes they can serve as an advocate for the victim in helping them navigate appointments or meetings. Short-Term Counseling/Therapy/Group Therapy Forms of counseling and therapy services vary broadly across RCCs nationally. These services may also vary in price: Some RCCs will offer a certain number of free sessions after which payment may be required, while others may not be able to offer therapy at all. Regardless of whether or not therapy is a service provided by your local RCC, they will likely be able to point you in the direction of counseling options to fit your needs.” https://www.nsvrc.org/blogs/what-are-rape-crisis-centers-and-how-have-they-changed-over-years. “I would have to work with abuse of all types and contexts prevention coalitions like sexual assault coalitions and domestic violence coalitions.” -Antonio Myers. “Depending on the goal, the licensed therapist and client work with the surrogate to design therapeutic experiences. According to the International Professional Surrogates Association, these experiences include “partner work in relaxation, effective communication, sensual and sexual touching, and social skills.” The sex therapist maintains an active role throughout the process. In the most common arrangement, the therapist meets with both the client and the surrogate, independently, each week. After these meetings, the client will meet with the surrogate. Police vs The Mob, Deep Undercover Truths. Special Digitally Remastered Episode. Disregard any ideas you may have about the realities of undercover police work, especially those shaped by Hollywood's depictions. Meet Lieutenant Ray Hassett, a retired police officer with 25 years of experience. His journey traversed the ranks from patrol officer to detective, sergeant, lieutenant, and even district commander in one of Connecticut's busiest police districts. Ray's experience goes far beyond the silver screen. He delves into the gritty world of deep undercover operations, facing the unvarnished truths of combating violent organized crime. During a three-year covert assignment, he infiltrated and dismantled a menacing organized crime syndicate. This wasn't just about going undercover; it entailed assuming a new identity, severing all ties with the police department, and confronting the very real skills, threats, and dangers lurking in the criminal underworld. Hassett's expertise extends to hostage negotiation, having received FBI training and serving as the Officer in Charge of the NHPD's Hostage Negotiation Unit since 2003. He's Crisis Intervention trained (CIT) and leads CIT officers in Connecticut, recognized as CIT Officer of the Year by the Connecticut Alliance to Benefit Law Enforcement (CABLE). Today, he continues to instruct police officers in de-escalation techniques, fostering improved interactions with the public and individuals in the mental health community. In addition to his local impact, Lt. Hassett's influence spans the globe. As a contractor for the U.S. State Department's Bureau of Diplomatic Security, he imparts his wisdom on hostage negotiation and behavioral observation development to foreign police agencies in various countries, from the Middle East to the Philippines, India, Colombia, Tajikistan, Jamaica, and North Africa. But Ray's journey into law enforcement wasn't conventional. He began as a patrol officer in 1987, only to officially leave the force in 1990, adopting a new identity to work undercover in organized crime. In 1993, he rose to the rank of detective, tackling cases in the Narcotics Division, the Major Crimes Unit, and the Arson Squad. His dedication to community service led him to collaborate with The Yale Child Studies Program. This initiative brought together child psychologists and first responders, helping children affected by homicide and domestic violence. As a Fellow with the Yale Child Studies Center, Hassett spread this program to other police agencies in the region. In 1996, he ascended to the rank of Sergeant, serving as Acting District Commander of the Chapel/Dwight Police District after a brief stint as a street supervisor in Patrol. By 1999, he achieved the rank of Lieutenant and became the permanent District Commander of the Chapel/Dwight Neighborhood, one of the busiest police districts in New Haven. It was in this role that he excelled, implementing innovative problem-solving strategies and nurturing close collaborations within diverse and ever-changing neighborhoods, significantly enhancing the quality of life. Before his entry into law enforcement, Ray's life took an interesting turn. He was once a professional actor who toured Europe with his improv partner John Ratzenberger. His film credits include iconic titles like "Superman: The Movie," "Ragtime," "The Spy Who Loved Me," "The Empire Strikes Back," and "Body Double." Interestingly, he often employs professional actors to simulate real-life incidents, aiding negotiators in better preparation for unit callouts. In essence, Lt. Hassett's career exemplifies the stark realities and multifaceted nature of law enforcement, particularly when confronting organized crime and the challenges faced by deep undercover officers. His valuable skills, combined with a commitment to community engagement and crisis intervention, have made a lasting impact on the law enforcement landscape. Jared Auten, LMSW, is the Crisis Line Director at HeadQuarters Kansas in Lawrence, KS. His work currently focuses on crisis center operations and 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline implementation and integration in Kansas. I view people who answer calls on the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline as the Navy Seals of communication. Their ability to listen, ask questions, help search through intense emotion, and collaboratively bring someone to a safer place is incredible. Due to this - I spent a lot of this episode asking about ways to employ these conversational and social skills in our everyday relationships and how to communicate crises. I also ask about how to navigate the topic of suicide with a loved one. When Jared was a teenager, he lost his father to suicide, so his perspective covers both a suicide prevention professional and a suicide loss survivor. Expect to hear about: the phenomenon of over-identifying with a narrativehow anonymity affects digital social situationswhy you should be direct when talking about suicidewhy it can be easy to struggle with the one-sided nature of therapynavigating the pressure of vulnerabilitywhy some people have FOMO when it comes to peoplea useful tip to navigate how many questions to askhow to talk to a loved one about suicide active listening tips (minimal encouragers, reflections, prompts)and the common mistake people make when someone tells them they're considering taking their own life. If you have recently had thoughts of taking your own life, call 988.
