Is Las Vegas safe? Las Vegans are certainly concerned about public safety — and if you listen to local town halls, what voters are telling their elected officials, and our local media's crime beat, you might begin to wonder, how much violent crime is really taking place here? Today, co-host Dayvid Figler sits down with Dr. Joshua Donnelly, professor of criminal justice at UNLV, to discuss what the stats actually tell us, and what shapes public perception of safety in our city. Shoot us a Text.As the month nears its close, we're talking about Senator Bernie Moreno going to bat for the auto industry with a new bill. Plus, GM is raising its stock dividends while doing a new buy back and the Las Vegas PD debuts a fleet of Cybertrucks given to them by an anonymous donor.Show Notes with links:Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-OH), a former auto dealer, is introducing the “Transportation Freedom Act”, a bill aimed at repealing federal emissions rules, reducing regulations, and providing tax breaks for U.S. automakers. The bill seeks to eliminate EPA tailpipe emissions rules and block California's zero-emission vehicle mandate. It offers a 200% tax deduction on wages paid to U.S. auto workers for automakers that keep at least 75% of production domestic, up to $150,000 per worker, and blocks companies from using the money they save for stock buybacks.Moreno's bill would end “arbitrary” CAFE fuel standards and replace them within six months with new, achievable regulations that align with consumer demand.GM, Stellantis, Toyota, NADA, the Alliance for Automotive Innovation and American Trucking Associations back the legislation.Moreno: “Thanks to liberal bureaucrats who want to mandate what cars Americans can drive, states like mine are riddled with car lots filled with expensive EVs people simply don't want and dormant factories that once employed millions of American workers. The only winner is China.”GM is doubling down on returning value to shareholders, announcing a 25% dividend increase and a new $6 billion share buyback program. This move, which sent shares up 6%, comes as the automaker looks to balance investor returns with EV investments.GM will repurchase $2B in shares by mid-2025, with the remaining $4B at its discretion and the quarterly dividend will rise from 12 to 15 cents per share, effective April 2025.GM repurchased 87M shares in Q4 2023, completing a previous $10B buyback.GM projects a net income of $11.2B to $12.5B for 2025, with $10B-$11B in capital spending as it works to narrow EV operating losses by $2B.The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) is bringing some futuristic flair to law enforcement, announcing the addition of 10 Tesla Cybertrucks to its patrol and SWAT fleets. But the real mystery? The trucks were entirely donated by an anonymous supporter.Sheriff Kevin McMahill made the announcement during the 2025 State of the Department event, saying on X, “These are badass”The Cybertrucks will be customized for patrol and SWAT operations and LVMPD will integrate them with semi-autonomous drones and shot-spotting technology.Speculation surrounds the anonymous donor, with some suspecting Tesla or Elon Musk, considering poor Cybertruck sales numbers.Others have proposed Anthony Horowitz of VC firm Andreessen Horowitz, as he has made large donations to the LVMPD in tHosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

In this special episode, a16z co-founders Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz sit down with Chief Mike Gennaro and Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Metro Police Department (LVMPD) to discuss how their organization is using advanced technology to become the safest city in America.  In a wide-randing conversation, Chief Gennaro and Sheriff McMahill share how their department is tackling modern policing challenges -- from crime prevention to building trust in the community -- in new ways. They also explain how new technology, such as drones and automatic license plate recognition, has helped their team to reduce crime, improve efficiency, and strengthen relationships with residents.  The discussion also covers efforts to break the cycle of recidivism, address addiction and mental health issues, and the innovative "Hope for Prisoners" program that helps former offenders rebuild their lives in productive ways. This episode offers a unique look at how LVMPD is using data and technology to transform policing and public safety, and fast becoming the blueprint for effective and community focused policing in America. The trial of Robert Telles, the former Clark County public administrator accused of murdering Las Vegas journalist Jeff German, entered a critical phase as the prosecution neared the end of its case. This week's testimony focused on evidence collected during the investigation, particularly the steps taken by law enforcement to tie Telles to the crime. One of the key pieces of evidence presented was a series of text messages exchanged between Telles and his colleague, Roberta Lee-Kennett, after German's death. The messages highlighted Telles' concern about the similarities between his vehicle and the one identified as the suspect vehicle. “I am. Very worried,” Lee-Kennett texted, to which Telles responded, “My car has all matching wheel patterns.” The exchange concluded with Lee-Kennett noting, “[Expletive] … your car is identical.” The prosecution then called Christie Baxter, a crime scene analyst supervisor for LVMPD. Baxter described the evidence collection process at the scene of German's murder, including the handling of DNA swabs and blood samples.  She also recounted photographing Telles' office during the investigation, with these images shown to the jury. A significant portion of the day's testimony came from Matthew Hovanec , a digital forensics expert, who discussed the extraction of data from Telles' Google Pixel smartphone. Hovanec revealed that Telles had repeatedly searched for information related to Jeff German, including viewing his residence on Google Maps and Google Street View. He presented evidence showing that Telles' phone stored 132 Street View images of German's home, viewed approximately 20 days before the murder.   During cross-examination, Draskovich questioned the possibility of Telles' phone being hacked, a theory that Hovanec dismissed due to a lack of supporting evidence. The prosecution emphasized that the search for German's residence occurred on Telles' work computer during office hours, indicating a preoccupation with the journalist. The court then heard from LVMPD homicide detective Justine Gatus, who provided a comprehensive account of the investigation into German's death.  Gatus detailed how her team followed up on tips, including ones that suggested Telles as a suspect.   She also described the discovery of foreign DNA under German's fingernails, which eventually led to Telles being stopped for a sample.   The defense sought to undermine the prosecution's case by pointing out the deletion of a body camera video from Telles' traffic stop. Draskovich argued that this deletion was significant, but Gatus clarified that it was an automated system process and not a deliberate act by investigators. After several hours of cross-examination, the prosecution rested its case. The defense is set to begin calling witnesses when the trial resumes on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. The trial's outcome now rests on the jury's interpretation of the extensive evidence presented over the past week. Lena Nozizwe Reporting: Tupac's Murder Was His Case

Where was retired LVMPD homicide detective Brent Becker when he first heard about the arrest of Keffe D? How does he know Cliff Mogg, the now retired LVMPD homicide detective who somehow brought the case of Tupac Shakur's murder to the Clark County DA? And just how familiar is Brent with those gathered to announce the indictment of Keffe D? (Hint: He knows them all.) Brent, one of the original investigators of the murder of Tupac, breaks it down  when he speaks to Lena Nozizwe exclusively in this bonus episode of Lena Nozizwe Reporting: Tupac's Murder Was His Case

Lena Nozizwe Reporting: Tupac's Murder Was His Case

Twenty-seven years ago Brent Becker was a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department homicide detective and he got an unusual call in the middle of the night. No, it's not unusual to get a call any time if your job is to investigate murders. But in this case no one had died. On September 7, 1996, it was just a shooting. The difference was, says Becker, that a high-profile victim was involved. Becker left the homicide department in 2001 without solving the murder of Tupac Shakur. In the years that have followed the investigation of Tupac's death has been cloaked in controversy, conspiracies and plenty of outright lies. But no arrest.  Until now. This episode was recorded in the early afternoon of October 2, 2023 before the arraignment of Keffe D.      #tupacmurderpodcast #tupac #keffed #keefed #lenanozizwe www.tupacmurderpodcast.com                 He was directed to go to the scene of a shooting just off the strip. That's just not normal when your job is to investigate murders. He says he was sent to the scene because LVMPD understood that the case involved a high-profile victim--namely Tupac Shakur.

When we think about the LGBTQ community and Law Enforcement, we often times think that the groups are opposed and that there is only room for conflict. Her body was found a month later, sexually assaulted, beaten and murdered. A notorious serial killer was the only real suspect – he was executed in Texas, but he didn't kill her. When a tip came in in 2019, new testing was conducted on the biological evidence in Kim's case that isolated a male DNA profile. Forensic genealogy led to the name of a suspect, and further testing of his living relatives revealed that he was the killer of Kim Bryant. But naming him also allowed the LVMPD to close another cold case – the 1983 abduction, rape and murder of 22 year old Diana Hanson.
