Chapter 126: The Final Call-The Murder of Robbie Doerr

What happens when the danger isn't on the job, but waiting at home? Robbie Doerr was a veteran firefighter who never imagined the greatest threat would come from someone he trusted. When Evansville, Indiana, is rocked by the murder of a beloved member of their community, the police have very few clues to go on to find the killer. With no murder weapon, witnesses who saw nothing, and no known enemies to look into, the case should have hit a wall. However, the clue they needed to propel the case forward was in the form of one deleted phone call that the killer never thought would see the light of day.  Connect with us on Social Media! You can find us at:Instagram: @bookofthedeadpodX: @bkofthedeadpodFacebook: The Book of the Dead PodcastTikTok: BookofthedeadpodOr visit our website at www.botdpod.comFeaturing a promo for True Crime Connections Podcast:True Crime Connections is a survivor-led podcast where stories of abuse, trauma, and resilience are shared with raw honesty and purpose. Writer-artist Joe Sacco created a new kind of journalism when he combined on-the-ground reportage with painstaking hand-drawn illustration. His award-winning books including Palestine and Safe Area Gorazde brought under-reported stories to new audiences. In his absorbing new book The Once And Future Riot he travels to Uttar Pradesh, India, to explore the causes and consequences of the bitter religious and political violence that consumed the area in the 2010s. He talks to Andrew Harrison about life as a conflict cartoonist, creativity vs A.I., and how “comics journalism” can do things the TV news never can.  • Buy The Once And Future Riot through our affiliate bookshop and you'll help fund The Bunker by earning us a small commission for every sale. Text a Message to the ShowIn the summer of 2025, one of my patrol officers, Hunter Simoncic, was struck by a car and killed in the line of duty. As part of the grieving process, we are sharing our experiences with you that you might be better prepared for the impossible tasks that immediately follow a line of duty death. One of the most difficult is that of family liaison officer.  A family liaison is assigned to the family of a fallen officer, to advocate for the family's needs, to communicate to them about police traditions and the departments needs, and be the point of contact for the countless questions that arise when everyone has just had their worst possible day.Our guest for this interview is friend of the show Captain Gregg Dorsett.  Captain Dorsett was asked to be a family liaison officer for the Simoncic family and he agreed to let me debrief him and share his experience with you.  To go from police commander and decision maker to family advocate in the midst of strongest possible emotions… well, that's a journey I think everyone can gain from hearing about.Concerns of Police Survivors can help families and coworkers.  Their website is https://www.concernsofpolicesurvivors.orgMusic is by the WesterliesHey Chaplain Podcast Episode 126 Part 2Tags:Family Liaison, Coroner, Family, Funeral Homes, Hospital, Memorials, Morgue, Murder, Paperwork, Planning, Police, Post-Mortem, Processions, Sympathy, Kansas City, KansasSupport the showThanks for Listening! Text a Message to the ShowIn the summer of 2025 my hometown of Kansas City, Kansas, lost two officers murdered in the line of duty: Deputy Elijah Ming and Officer Hunter Simoncic.  Because they were killed just 30 days apart, we had two large, complex, line of duty death funerals at the local major league soccer stadium, one funeral just a few weeks after the other.  We are still grieving and trying to process these losses, and as part of that process I wanted to offer our experiences as a resource to other agencies. The guest for this interview Captain Shenee Davis-Kross from the police department.  She was involved in the logistics and planning for both funerals, starting with the motorcycle escorts for the fallen and extending to an almost endless list of other responsibilities in the Op Plan.  Though Captain Davis was just one part of a much larger team, I felt she represented the group's experience really well and I think you'll learn a lot from what she went through.Music is by the WesterliesHey Chaplain Podcast Episode 126Tags:Line of Duty Death, Ceremonies, Family, Funeral, Helicopters, Liaisons, Logistics, Motorcycles, Murder, Police, Sheriff, Snipers, Sporting KC, SWAT, Taps, Kansas City, KansasSupport the showThanks for Listening! Officials revealed a remarkable twist: the car that stopped the fleeing motorcycle suspect was driven by an off-duty deputy who put himself on duty and performed a legal intervention, ending the dangerous pursuit. The focus briefly turned to Dodgers vs. Toronto, Game #3 at Dodger Stadium. The tragic news deepened — Deputy Andrew Nunez was confirmed killed in the line of duty. Meanwhile, LAX faced a ground stop amid Day 27 of the government shutdown, and SNAP funds were nearing depletion. More details emerged: the off-duty deputy's intervention caused a major traffic jam on the 210 East in Upland, as the region mourned the fallen San Bernardino hero.

Ep. 72 Tessa Melville has been with the Kent Police Department for eight years, though her introduction to law enforcement began much earlier through her stepfather, a police officer, and her mother, a dispatcher. The realities of the job were made very clear before she even started. At just 16 years old, Tessa joined her parents in attending the memorial service for the devastating ambush murders of four Lakewood Police Department officers – known as the Lakewood Four – all of them gunned down as they sat in a coffee shop on a Sunday morning in 2009.With only three months on with Kent PD, Tessa would face her own critical incidents including responding to the scene of the line of duty death of Kent Police Officer Diego Moreno during which she rendered aid to both him and another officer seriously wounded in a crash at the scene. We discuss the lasting impact of this incident on her and how it helped shape her career and her outlook. After three years in patrol, Tessa became a field training officer, a role which she says has been one of her most challenging. A few years later, Tessa joined the Detective Unit to work Special Assault, cases which include sexual assault, domestic violence, internet crimes against children, and elder abuse. Tessa decided to join this unit in part because of her personal experience as a sexual assault survivor. She wanted to bring her learnings and a trauma-informed approach to the work. However, after nearly two years as a detective on this unit, Tessa decided to return to patrol while continuing to investigate some of her cases, the reasons for which we will discuss. We also talk about how she didn't really consider law enforcement as a profession even with her family affiliation. She chose first to go into the military, where she spent five years in the Navy as a Green Side hospital corpsman where she received specialized training in traumatic field care, training she has put to use as a police officer.Thank you, Tessa. In The Line Of Duty"-Episode. Killed in the Line Of Duty Oregon Reserve Deputy's Father. Special Episode. The loss of a loved one is always devastating, but when that loss comes in the line of duty, it leaves an enduring impact on families, colleagues, and communities. This is the story of Reserve Deputy Mark Alan Whitehead, who was killed in the line of duty while serving with the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office in Oregon. His father, Jim Whitehead, shares his journey of grief, resilience, and commitment to honoring his son’s legacy. I just received word on 02/25/2025 that Jim Whitehead passed away just a few days before this was released. The Tragic Night On February 26, 1993, Reserve Deputy Mark Alan Whitehead and Reserve Sergeant Scott Collins were on patrol when tragedy struck. A drunk driver, traveling at an estimated speed of 105 mph, lost control of his vehicle on I-84 just east of 181st Street. The car went airborne, crossed the center divider, and crashed into their patrol car, shearing off the roof. Both deputies, along with the intoxicated driver, who had a blood alcohol content three times the legal limit, were killed instantly. Read the supporting stories about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium, Newsbreak and Blogspot. Mark had served as a Reserve Deputy for just a year and a half, while Scott had dedicated five years to the force. Their deaths marked the first time Reserve Deputies from the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office had been killed in the line of duty. Killed in the Line Of Duty Oregon Reserve Deputy's Father. Special Episode. The interview is available as a free podcast on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast website, also available on platforms like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and most major podcast outlets. A Father’s Grief and Mission Jim Whitehead, Mark’s father, still vividly remembers the moment he received the heartbreaking news. The loss of his son turned his world upside down. Over time, Jim channeled his pain into purpose. Today, he dedicates his time to helping other families who have suffered similar tragedies through his volunteer work with Oregon Concerns Of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.). Through this organization, Jim supports families of fallen officers, offering guidance, comfort, and resources to those coping with loss. He understands the deep sorrow that comes with losing a loved one in the line of duty, and he strives to ensure that no family grieves alone. Follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Newsbreak, Medium and most all social media platforms. Honoring Their Sacrifice In 2014, 21 years after Mark and Scott’s deaths, a roadside memorial was erected along I-84 near the Fairview Parkway exit. This tribute, made possible through the efforts of the Sheriff’s Office, the Collins and Whitehead families, and state legislators, stands as a solemn reminder of their sacrifice. Killed in the Line Of Duty Oregon Reserve Deputy's Father. Each year during National Police Week, the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office holds a memorial service to honor those killed in the line of duty. With bagpipes, gun salutes, and heartfelt speeches, officers and families gather to remember the fallen, ensuring their legacy is never forgotten. The names of 11 officers, including Mark and Scott, are permanently engraved on a plaque outside the Sheriff's Office, a lasting tribute to their service. Check out the show on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Newsbreak, Medium and most all social media platforms Sheriff Daniel Staton, who worked alongside both men, emphasized the irreplaceable loss suffered by their colleagues and loved ones. “You never move past it,” he said. “Collins and Whitehead, I worked with them; I was working the night they died, you don’t forget.” A Nationwide Issue Mark and Scott’s deaths were part of a much larger issue: drunk driving. Every year, nearly 10,000 Americans lose their lives in alcohol-related crashes. Fortunately, thanks to stricter laws, increased awareness, and law enforcement efforts, drunk driving fatalities have decreased by more than a third over the past three decades. In Oregon, DUI citations have significantly dropped since the mid-1990s, a testament to ongoing efforts to prevent similar tragedies. The constant exposure to trauma and moral challenges pushed him to question his faith and himself. Through prayer, scripture, and the support of a brotherhood like Men's Alliance, he found the strength to endure and grow. With his wife's faith journey eventually aligning with his own, he learned to lead with humility, relying on God and his community to navigate life's darkest moments, like trauma that comes with being an officer, miscarriage and issues in the home, and much more. Surviving the Unthinkable: A Law Enforcement Officer's Story of Courage and Recovery In this week's Team Never Quit episode, Marcus and Melanie meet with Julie Werhnyak, a former Tempe, Arizona police officer whose life changed forever on March 3, 2015. Julie shares her harrowing experience, the split-second decisions she had to make, and how she drew upon her training and resilience to survive being stabbed in the neck. Julie had a routine before starting her shift. But on that fateful Tuesday morning, she sensed something was amiss. A premonition led her to alter her routine and mentally prepare for what lay ahead. Responding to a call for a welfare check, Julie and a colleague encountered a situation that quickly escalated. As they attempted to gain entry to the residence, Julie's worst fears were realized. A violent suspect emerged, armed and dangerous. In a split-second decision, Julie confronted the assailant, risking her life to protect others. Julie's bravery came at a cost. She sustained severe injuries during the confrontation, but her training and resolve kept her focused on survival. With the support of her colleagues and medical personnel, Julie began her journey towards recovery. Despite the physical and emotional toll of her ordeal, Julie returned to duty, driven by a sense of duty and resilience. However, the challenges didn't end there. Julie reflects on the importance of proper psychological support for law enforcement officers facing trauma. After two decades of service, Julie recently retired from the force. With her company, Artemis Self-Defense, Julie continues to empower others through tactical and self-defense education. Her story serves as a testament to the power of training, resilience, and community support. Julie Werhnyak's journey is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers and the strength it takes to overcome adversity. In this episode you will hear: • My best never quit story would've been during my martial arts training and because of those never quit moments, that's how I was able to survive the stabbing that I incurred. (5:50) • Every day I put on my Tempe Police uniform I spoke some version of mantra which is “I accept and expect I will be involved in a lethal encounter today, and I will do everything I can to insure my survival.” (8:36) • As soon as the muzzle of my gun touches his body, and I fire my first round, the knife penetrates my neck, just above the left clavicle. (19:24) • I started on my tactical breathing to slow everything down, so that hopefully I would bleed out. (21:31) • My first thought was, “Oh shit”, not because I was scared but because I knew I couldn't get out of the way and I was gonna be stabbed. (28:32) • The trauma doctor attributed not only my survival but her [the victim's] survival to physical conditioning. (29:35) • It missed my carotid [artery] by less than an inch. (33:05) • [The perpetrator] was a 26 year old guy with his whole life ahead of him. He had a family who loved him. (35:07) • I survived because I was prepared. (39:16) • I wasn't thinking I was gonna die, I was too focused on living. (39:47) • I knew that if I was in a knife fight I would probably be cut, but it would be what I did next that mattered.
