I don't appreciate how you are exploiting my sister's death for politics—hurtful & disrespectful to the important changes she made for service members. President Donald Trump did nothing but show respect to my family & Vanessa. In fact, I voted for President Trump today.” During a CNN townhall event, Kamala Harris explicitly stated that she believes Trump is a “fascist.” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre echoed identical sentiments on behalf of the Biden-Harris Administration. On Friday, an Auschwitz survivor named Jerry Wartski appeared in a social media video demanding that Harris apologize for the outlandish comparison: “I know more about Hitler than Kamala will ever know in a thousand lifetimes. Here's Episode 108 of Michigan's Premier Progressive Podcast! Visit MichiganVoting.org for voting information. 00:00-19:07: Trump's Fascism/Rick Snyder's Sad Pat Johnston begins the episode talking about how Dear Leader Trump's former Chief Of Staff, John Kelly, called his former boss a fascist. And even though Trump has praised Hitler, the MAGA Republican Party continue to rush to his defense. That's why the story of Trump calling deceased U.S. Army soldier Vanessa Guillen an "F-ing Mexican," is celebrated within MAGA circles rather than reviled. Pat also talks about former Michigan Republican Governor Rick Snyder's crusade to help MAGA Republicans take control of the state house. Snyder, who spent years painting himself as a moderate "nerd," is proving there's no difference between he and MAGA. That's what Pat's always been saying! 19:08-36:55: Sam Inglot of Progress Michigan Sam Inglot, Executive Director of Progress Michigan, joins the show to talk about the importance of getting people to the polls this election. Pat and Sam talk about that while the presidential race is important, the down-ballot races are just as vital. Elections for who takes over Congress, the state House, and the State Supreme Court are important to Michigan's future when it comes to the economy, social justice rights, union rights, LGBTQ+ rights, environmental justice, clean energy economy, and more. Plus, Sam also shares how the ultra-right wing Heritage Foundation's "Project 2025" will attack Michigan's rural and farming communities, as well as the more populated areas across the state. Please, make sure people get to the polls! Visit MichiganVoting.org for voting information. 36:56-42:41: Last Call--Democrats Losing Gen Z Men? This week's "Last Call" deals with a post declaring that the Democratic Party is losing male Gen Z voters, and they've got to do more to reach them. Pat wonders how, exactly, are Democrats supposed to reach this voting bloc, which is supposedly voting more MAGA. 42:42-45:29: Ending/UM-MSU Prediction Please, subscribe to the podcast, download each episode, and give it a good review if you can! leftoflansing@gmail.com Left of Lansing is now on YouTube as well! leftoflansing.com

SERIES 3 EPISODE 55: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: The obvious problem with John Kelly going on the record and saying yes, I heard Trump say quote “I need the kind of generals that Hitler had” is that a huge number of his supporters will applaud it. And the obvious problem with Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic quoting those who were there as Trump was told the cost of the funeral he'd offered to pay for, for a murdered U-S soldier named Vanessa Guillen, and Trump screamed “It doesn't cost 60-thousand bucks to bury an effing Mexican!” is that even MORE of Trump's supporters will applaud THAT. Because the real, disgusting, nauseating truth behind the revelations in the Goldberg Atlantic piece is that it touches the third and FOURTH rails of Donald Trump's America: many of his people believe whoever is in charge SHOULD be supported by and in fact kept in power by “the kind of generals Hitler had.” The antisemites in the Trump cult love it. And the ones who aren't antisemites just authoritarians love it even if they're queasy about the antisemitism. And the ones who aren't antisemites or authoritarians but have always secretly believed the word “Democracy” was just another brand name or FLAVOR love it because it posits a kind of America not just where MIGHT makes RIGHT, but where ONLY might makes right. And if there is anybody missing from the Trump Coalition of Evil, anybody who ISN'T inspired by “I need the kind of generals that Hitler had” they are certainly covered by “It doesn't cost 60,000 bucks to bury an effing Mexican” because if violence and militarism are the Trumpian third rail, racism and specifically anti-Hispanic racism are the FOURTH rail. MEANWHILE:19% of Republicans think if Trump loses he should just seize power (28% of Mormon Americans). The latest great polling numbers for Kamala Harris? In July she was getting less than half of voters under 35. She's now getting 60% And it sounds ridiculous: Ex-Flamenco Correspondent and Trump concierge judge Aileen Cannon as Attorney General? Honestly - how much more could she do for Trump than Merrick Garland has? B-Block (26:29) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Jeremy Peters of The New York Times says on MSNBC (with help from Katy Tur) that Kamala Harris is not as clear in her speaking as is Trump. Newsweek Magazine isn't certain if that photo of Trump in a Pittsburgh Steelers 100 pounds lighter and 40 years younger MIGHT BE A FAKE. And Trump's own campaign can't spell "Steelers" - and in a very Freudian way. C-Block (36:05) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: More of my atypical World Series previews: Why I'm adopting ex-Yankees manager Ralph Houk's attitude towards the team he, like I, grew up with: "Piss on the Yankees."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When a parent sends their child off to join the army, to defend their country, the enemy they envision is a far off one. The danger is never supposed to be in the soldier's home base. Tragically, for the Guillen family, that is exactly where the deadly threat lurked. Vanessa Guillen was murdered by the dirtbag, Aaron Robinson, who then hid her body. Finding Vanessa sparked a nationwide search that led to shameful military behavior being brought to light, and change that still sparks debate. On April 22, 2020 a female soldier, PFC Vanessa Guillen, went missing from Fort Hood in Texas. It was soon discovered that PFC Guillen had suffered sexual harassment and abuse at the hands of fellow soldiers and was on the verge of reporting the incidents when she went missing. Her family and the general public were very vocal about the lack of action on the part of the Army in regards to curbing these behaviors and the outcry brought a lot of attention to the case. On June 30th, PFC Guillen's body was located in a clandestine grave 20 miles outside the base. A fellow soldier was identified as the main suspect but he killed himself when investigators attempted to take him into custody. Listen along as we wrap out our 3 part series on Fort Hood with the tragic case of Vanessa Guillen. Music by Gioele Fazzeri from Pixabay,

During late 2019 and halfway through 2020, the old Fort Hood (now Fort Cavazos) in Texas was the most dangerous military installation inside the United States. In 2020 alone 39 deaths were associated with soldiers from the base, with the most famous case being that of Vanessa Guillen. But the base had a reputation for being dangerous well before 2020, thanks to the 2009 mass shooting, a thwarted 2011 mass shooting, and a 2014 mass shooting. Other crimes that were somewhat swept under the rug were all part of what some say was a "look the other way" policy that was pervasive on the base. We will cover some of those crimes this episode in part 2 of this 3 part series about crimes at Fort Hood. Music by Gioele Fazzeri from Pixabay,

In 2019, a DOD report stated that sexual assault reports in the military are on the rise, every year, it's higher than the last. That could be due the number of reports just rising because more people are coming forward, but it is a fact that sexual assault happens at high numbers in the Military. A different report from 2010 stated that 120 female military service members stationed in Iraq died there. 60 of those 120 deaths were reported to be non-combat related. Of those half, non-combat deaths, 30 were ruled suicides, but there was evidence to suggest many of them may have actually been murders. Many families reported that the army had given them conflicting information, failed to give any information or asked families to remain silent about their daughters death. On today's episode, Cristina tells guest co-host Carmen about the death of LaVena Lynn Johnson, Kamisha Block, Amanda Gonzalez, Vanessa Guillen and the recent death of Ana Basaldua Ruiz in Fort Hood. In this last of our special holiday episodes, Esther and Lorena discuss the Netflix documentary “I Am Vanessa Guillen" with Margot, host of the podcast Military Murder. Vanessa Guillen was a United States Army soldier who went missing from a Texas military base in 2020. Her family would face an uphill battle trying to get answers when Vanessa's superiors closed ranks and did little to investigate her disappearance. But the efforts of her family through protests and social media posts that went viral sparked a movement that shone a spotlight on abuses that had, up to that point, gone unchecked. Margot's podcast, Military Murder, is a true crime podcast that covers cases where the victims or the perpetrators are members of the military.. Margot has served in the military and her knowledge and experience provided additional insights and information regarding this case and the documentary. She covered Vanessa Guillen's case on her podcast. You can listen to Military Murder on all your favorite podcast apps or at www.militarymurderpodcast.com. Soldier Vanessa Guillen was brutally murdered at a Texas military base by fellow soldier Spc. Aaron Robinson. A document from the Texas Department of Public Safety reveals that Robinson killed Guilllen was because she saw a photo of a woman on Robinson's phone. That photo was of Cecily Aguilar, the wife of another soldier, with whom Robinson was having an affair. According to Aguilar, who is also charged in Guillen's death, Robinson was worried about getting in trouble for violating the Army's fraternization rules. A $35 million dollar lawsuit against the Army has been filed in Guillen's death by her family. The lawsuit is seeking damages for wrongful death but that's not all. The family is suing on the basis of sexual harassment, abuse, assault, rape, sodomy as well. A military investigation found that 20-year-old Guillen was also sexually harassed and that leaders failed to take appropriate action. The lawsuit describes two instances in which Guillén was harassed. Guillen told family that she did not report the harrassment for fear of retaliation.
