Today’s guest has spent much of his career navigating the shadowy world of hostage negotiations, where lives hang in the balance and fortunes are exchanged for freedom. Rob Phayre isn’t just an expert in the field—he’s been on the front lines, directly involved in securing the release of over 800 hostages, billions of dollars’ worth of shipping and cargo, and overseeing hundreds of millions in ransom payments. Some of those operations even hold Guinness World Records for the largest ransoms ever paid at sea. Rob also brings his expertise to the page as the award-winning author of The Response Files series, including the Amazon bestseller The Ransom Drop, Jungle Heist, and The Insurgency. His upcoming book, How to Deliver a Ransom, dives deep into the real-world mechanics of the kidnap-for-ransom business—a true crime, non-fiction guide to an industry most of us only see in movies. Today, we’re pulling back the curtain on what it really takes to negotiate with kidnappers, deliver ransoms, and bring people home. Rob Phayre, welcome to the show. After last year's Halloween Fifth Tuesday, many discussions were had about how to celebrate the occasion again in 2024 — but, ultimately, there was only one answer that everybody was definitely 100% on board about and excited for and agreed to without any trouble. Unanimously and in perfect unison, we all chose to revisit our shared childhoods with Double, Double, Toil and Trouble (1993), the made-for-TV movie starring Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. The tiny twins may have been well into building their empire by then (after all, they started as literal infants), but they were still getting used to the acting game, and it showed in their adorable performance as they kept accidentally looking into the camera. That said, they still gave a masterclass in sass, and they held their own amidst stars like Cloris Leachman, Eric McCormack, and Meshach Taylor. On our latest episode of Spooky Tuesday, we're enjoying the autumnal vibes and trying not to get too bogged down in ‘90s era problematic elements as we go on a little adventure and learn the magic words: Jacuzzi jacuzzi!

What does Sinwar's death mean for prospects of Gaza ceasefire and hostage negotiations?

Yayha Sinwar, the leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip and head of the group's political bureau was killed by Israeli forces on October 16. His death sparked contrasting reactions. While the West has largely endorsed the killing of a man Israel's considers as the ‘mastermind' of the October 7, 2023 attack, Palestinians, Arabs, and other actors in the Middle East have hailed him as a ‘martyr' and a ‘hero' who will inspire Palestinians to continue their fight for self-determination and statehood. Some commentators in the West also see in his passing an opportunity for a ceasefire, return of the Israeli hostages, and a strategic reshaping of the region in favour of Israeli and American interests. What does Sinwar's death mean for Hamas? Will it help or hinder the prospects of a ceasefire in Gaza? What does Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu mean when he said that the war is “not over” despite the killing of top Hamas leaders such as Sinwar, Ismail Haniyeh, and also much of Hezbollah's senior leadership? Guest: Dr. Andreas Krieg, Associate Professor in the School of Security, Defence Studies Department, Institute of Middle-Eastern Studies, at King's College, London. Host: G. Sampath, Social Affairs Editor, The Hindu. Edited by Jude Francis Weston

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Diplomatic reporter Lazar Berman and editor Amy Spiro join host Amanda Borschel-Dan on today's episode. Reports came out last night that the chances of a phased hostage-ceasefire agreement being achieved on the basis of Israel's May proposal are “close to zero” and there is “very broad pessimism.” The US, which had indicated it was planning to present a new bridging proposal in the next two or three days, is now regarded as unlikely to do so, it added. Berman brings an update. Amid public criticism from top Israeli officials last week, Egypt's army chief of staff Lt. Gen. Ahmed Fathy Khalifa made a surprise visit on Thursday to the country's border with the Gaza Strip to inspect the security situation. At around the same time, the Egyptian leader, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi made a first Egyptian presidential visit to Turkey in 12 years, where he discussed the Gaza war and ways to further repair the long-frozen ties between the regional powers during talks in Ankara. How is the growing daylight between Israel and Egypt affecting the region? Israel wrapped up its time at the 2024 Paris Paralympics on Sunday with 10 medals, including four gold, its best showing at the Games in 20 years. In this year's games, only three of the 28 Paralympians representing Israel this year were wounded during military service. One of the sad byproducts of the war is a sharp uptick in other potential candidates. We hear about the highlights of the games and how the organization is working towards using the 2028 games as a goal for this war's wounded warriors. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. It is day 247 of the war with Hamas. Editor David Horovitz joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. Israel celebrated yesterday after the IDF announced that it had rescued Noa Argamani, Almog Meir Jan, Andrey Kozlov, and Shlomi Ziv from eight months of Hamas captivity in Gaza. Horovitz shares his impressions of the mood of the country. Protesters at rallies in Tel Aviv and across the country on Saturday night called for new elections and the return of the hostages held in captivity in Gaza. The protests at the same time as war cabinet minister Benny Gantz was meant to give a statement at the deadline of his self-imposed ultimatum of whether or not to stay in the government. We hear what may be some of Gantz's considerations. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is set to visit the region starting tomorrow, even as Israel awaits Hamas's response to the hostage deal proposal pushed by US President Joe Biden. Could the rescue operation reframe the negotiations in any way? On Friday, Israel, Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad were added to the United Nations' so-called “list of shame,” which is attached to an annual report released by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres's office that documents alleged rights violations against children in armed conflict, sparking outrage in Jerusalem.
